Extractions: 19th Century Women: Onstage and Off List of Inchbald Plays Elizabeth Inchbald, a self-educated country girl from Suffolk, ran away to London, at 18, to become an actress. She married an actor, Joseph Inchbald, then 36. Following the wedding, the Inchbalds signed on with a theatrical company managed by West Digg's (1772-76), touring Scotland and Wales. Elizabeth played leading roles in Shakespeare, Rowe, Goldsmith and Sheridan. In 1776, the Inchbalds were engaged to join a company managed by Joseph Younger, a company which performed in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. It was here that Elizabeth Inchbald met and became close friends with Sarah Siddons and her younger brother, John Philip Kemble. The Inchbalds next joined the northern provincial company managed by Tate Wilkinson. (1777-80) At this time, Elizabeth had begun writing her novel, A Simple Story Chronology of Important Dates Elizabeth Inchbald's London debut, as actress, at Covent Garden.
