Z FARRAR, John, educator, born in Lincoln, Massachusetts, 1 July 1779; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 8 May 1853. He was graduated at Harvard in 1803, studied theology at Andover, and in 1805 was appointed Greek tutor at Harvard. He was chosen Hollis professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in the same institution in 1807, and retained the chair till 1836, when he resigned in consequence of a painful illness that finally caused his death. He published for the use of his pupils a translation of Lacroix's " Elements of Algebra" (1818), which he followed by selections from Legendre, Blot, Bezant, and others. Harvard, the U. S. military academy, and other institutions at once adopted these works as Textbooks.

John Farrar He started to play guitar at the age of 12 and at 16 joined a local pop group called The Strangers. The band had a string of hit records, was a regular guest on TV and became heavily involved in the recording industry as session players and arrangers for many major Australian acts. In June 1997 'The Best of the Strangers' was released on CD (CD -014) by Canetoad records, Australia. In 1969, John met Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch of The Shadows Faithful in February 1972. Bruce Welch left the band in 1972 due to personal reasons, but a year later the band reformed and Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett and John Farrar took the original band name The Shadows and in 1975 represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest getting to the second place. John Farrar's contribution to the sound of the Shadows in the early 1970s was huge. Brian Bennett once described him as "the most professional musician I have ever worked with." In 1975, John Farrar left the UK and relocated to the States to become the musical director and record producer for Olivia Newton-John.

Though he has angled from Alaska to Argentina, on waters salt and fresh, he's always drawn home to the Pacific Northwest where he flyfishes for sea-run steelhead and resident trout. "I never tire of wading rivers," says John. "Being there is reward enough." Coming from the Black Hills of South Dakota to study at the University of Washington, John soon discovered the Northwest's great rivers and its fishery.     Extractions: Two years after the Bruce left the Shadows, he and Hank made plans to work together again but in a different context than 'the Shadows'. They invited John Farrar to join them. John is a very talented singer and guitarist they had met whilst he was playing with a group called 'The Strangers' in Melbourne. He had a tremendous talent for arranging vocal harmonies and they did a lot of West Coast harmonies in the style of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Marvin Welch and Farrar made their first appearance on the Cliff Richard TV series in January 1971, releasing their first album and a single 'Faithful' the following month. A European tour followed in March for which they were augmented by Brian Bennett on the drums so 75% of the group had joined up again (John Rostill being unavailable because he was contracted to play in Tom Jones' backing band). Not suprisingly, tour promoters wanted to bill the group as 'the Shadows' but they insisted that they were doing a new act comprising all acoustic/vocal numbers. Despite getting good reviews from critics, their second album 'Second Opinion' was not a commercial success and none of their singles 'Faithful' and 'Marmaduke' made the charts. Fans at concerts were always yelling for 'Apache' and 'FBI'. It seemed impossible to shake off 'the Shadows tag' and eventually, they had to bow to public opinion and include Shadows numbers such as 'Dance On'.
