His nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876) is, in essence, more of the same but at sea and has since been turned into a moderately successful musical. The later children's work, Sylvie and Bruno (1889, vol. 2 1893) was expanded from "Bruno's Revenge", a short story published in Aunt Judy's Magazine in 1867. Besides mathematics and children's stories, Carroll was also a keen photography enthusiast. His particular penchant for photographing young girls is now viewed with some amount of probably quite unfounded suspicion. Also, he was an unbelievably fussy man who wrote no less than forty-eight letters of complaint to the steward at Christ Church while he taught there about everything from odours in rooms to the choice of meant for dinner. Nonetheless, his books are still popular amongst adults and children alike and have been translated into many languages - including Latin! Lewis Carroll, or to give him his real name, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832- 1898), is best remembered for his two Alice books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Many people do not know that he was a mathematician by profession. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics, he remained at Christ Church as Mathematical Lecturer for the 47 years until his death.

They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. Ripon comes into the Dodgson story in 1852 when as a young man his father, also Charles, was appointed a canon of Ripon Cathedral, requiring thirteen weeks residence in Ripon each year which lasted for sixteen years. During vacations from Oxford young Charles joined the family in Ripon, where he worked not only on his mathematics but also wrote letters, poems and stories such as Ye Carpette Knyghte, and Legend of Scotland (for the Bishop 's children) as well as parts of Alice Through the Looking-Glass. His The Hunting of the Snark, the longest and arguably the most important humorous poem in the English language, has amongst its principal characters not only a Boots but also a Bellman, both well-known Ripon characters. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.

His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. According to the terms of the studentship, Carroll was to remain unmarried and proceed to holy orders. Several years later he was ordained a deacon, but he never proceeded to priest's orders. Throughout his education, Carroll consistantly distinguished himself with honors, congradulations, and respect from his peers and mentors alike. He wrote, "I am getting tired of being congratulated on various subjects; there seems to be no end of it."

    Extractions: This quiet little village, situated in lush Cheshire countryside, is probably most famous as the birthplace of the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson born in Daresbury in 1832, whose work has brought happiness to thousands of children throughout the world. Today his birthplace is marked by a series of interpretation plaques. Daresbury is located a few miles east of Runcorn and south-west of Warrington, in the borough of Halton. It is located 1 mile North of Junction 11, M56 motorway. There is a bypass in place around the village, thus ensuring its quiet, tranquil atmosphere. Like many villages today, Daresbury's local shops have all closed down but the village pub and smithy remain, (the smithy is now run by an agricultural and horticultural engineer).     Extractions: Performances About the Collection The Alice 100 Collection celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the first publication of Alice in 1865. Over a seven year period, a well known rare book dealer in Victoria, R.D.Hilton Smith gathered almost 500 books for the collection. The collection includes more than 200 editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland usually accompanied by Through the Looking Glass and displays the work of more than 80 illustrators. The collection includes the 1866 official first edition to a calf-bound set that bears Alice Hargreaves' (Alice's married name) signature. The collection also includes parodies and imitations, musical and stage productions, film stills, translations, as well as other works by and about Carroll. In 1965, the collection was donated to the University of British Columbia by the graduating class of 1925 in celebration of their 40th anniversary. Today, this delightful collection can be found in the Special Collections Division.
