Extractions: The next transformation for Victoria is that of the somber, matronly widow we see in this portrait. The buffeting of political reform contributed to her anxiety and isolation as well. LEFT : The monument is the Albert Memorial, ordered by the queen in 1863 following the prince consort's death but not completed until 1872. Standing 175 feet (53 meters) tall, the memorial is a grand but melancholy expression of the Victorian gothic style made popular by its architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. 125 years of weather left the memorial in a sad state. After several years, and millions of pounds, restoration was completed and the shimmering memorial was finally unvieled in 1999. RIGHT : The "Australian" or secret ballot was introduced into English parliamentary elections by the Ballot Act of 1872. Not Disraeli, but his arch rival William Gladstone was responsible for this achievement, which might be seen as the culmination of a number of reform bills put through parliament during Victoria's reign. CENTRE : It is not by chance that the vignette of novelist and radical conservative politician Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) replaces that of Prince Albert in the previous stamp. Twice Prime Minister, Disraeli was a staunch supporter of the monarchy while still appearing to be a champion of reform. It was at his instigation that the queen was proclaimed Empress of India in 1876. Victoria, in turn, named Disraeli the First Earl of Beaconsfield. Gossip mongers linked the queen and her minister romantically but there was never any proof of such a liaison.

These were published at a time when the prestige and influence of European Jewry was at its highest and represented pride in their achievements since Jewish emancipation. Unhappily, these rare publications were later to be used by the nazis to identify families and individuals for extermination and many copies of these publications were destroyed both by nazi fanatics and by those Jewish families who had once been proud to have been included. Birth dates were indicated with the hexagonal Star of David, while a Jewish tomb stone symbol indicated who died in the Jewish faith, and a Cross those who died in the Christian faith. Marriage dates were indicated with two bold rings interlocking if husband and wife both had Jewish blood, while a bold ring with an outline ring indicated whether only one of the partners was of Jewish ancestry. Extractions: British statesman and novelist, Disraeli provided the Conservative Party with its policies of popular democracy and imperialism. Born to Italian-Jewish parents, in 1817 Disraeli's father baptised his children as Christians. With Jews excluded from Parliament until 1858, this enabled Disraeli to pursue a career that would otherwise have been denied him. Early business ventures failed, leaving him heavily in debt. He had a breakdown and for four years did little until he decided to pursue a political career. After four attempts, in 1837 he was elected as Tory candidate for Maidstone. He soon established himself as a compelling speaker and his career took off. However, the failure of the Conservative leader, Sir Robert Peel, to give him a Cabinet position in 1841 prompted his bitter opposition to Peel's decision to repeal the Corn Laws, the protective duties on foreign grain. Although the laws passed, Peel resigned the following year. In 1852 Disraeli became Chancellor of the Exchequer in Lord Derby's minority government. He served as chancellor under Derby in three such governments, reforming Parliament in 1865 with a bill that doubled the existing electorate.

Extractions: Benjamin Disraeli was born on 21 December 1804 at Bedford Row London. He was the eldest son and second of five children born to Isaac D'Israeli and his wife Maria Basevi. Although the family was Jewish, Benjamin was baptised at St. Andrew's Anglican church in 1817. He was educated at Miss Roper's school in Islington and then went to Higham Hall School in Walthamstow between 1817 and 1821. In 1824 he was admitted to Lincoln's Inn but he withdrew in 1831. After that Disraeli travelled throughout Europe and the Near East; whilst on his travels he contracted venereal disease and was subjected to the mercury treatment on his return to England. Since gonorrhoea causes sterility in males, this may explain why he remained childless. On his return he abandoned a career in Law to pursue one in writing. In 1825 the daily newspaper The Representative appeared: it was founded by Disraeli and John Murray but it lasted only a few months. However, his first novel, Vivien Grey Taunton by-election in April 1835 but by then he was an 'official' Tory candidate thanks to the efforts of Sir Francis Bonham and the Carlton Club . Disraeli had been conducting an affair with Lady Henrietta Sykes since 1833; it seems that her husband was aware of the liaison that continued for three years. They parted in the autumn of 1836.

Disraeli received his education at private schools in Blackheath and Walthamstow. Between the ages of 17 and 20 he became a law apprentice at a London office. After suffering heavy financial loss due to reckless speculation in the stock market, he started writing novels, the first of which, Vivien Grey, appeared in 1826 with some success. Other novels include: The Young Duke (1831); Cantarini Fleming (1832); Henrietta Temple (1837); Lothair (3 vols. 1870); and Endymion (3 vol. 1880). The files in this collection span from the years 1799-1881 and include correspondence, visual materials, and a bound book of letters. Disraeli's correspondence includes letters to family members, politicians, and others. The visual materials include photographs, engraved pictures, and caricatures of Benjamin Disraeli. When Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) determined that his rising ambitions required a personal motto, he chose forti nihil difficile, or "nothing is difficult to the strong." Strength of will, one assumesfor a Jew in pre-Victorian England had barriers before him that would have dissuaded most aspirants for status. Until 1829, Roman Catholics were disenfranchised, and could not hold public office or be involved in such professions as law. Universities were also closed to them. For Disraeli, born Benjamin D'Israeli in Bloomsbury, where his father was a dilettante man of letters, the path was smoothed by the nonbelieving Isaac, who, cynically, had his son converted, at twelve, to the Anglican persuasion, to open up opportunities. Always a romantic, Disraeli liked to believe that his ancestors were cultured Jews from Golden Age Spain, but in reality his grandfather had emigrated from Cento, in Italy near Ferrara, where he was a seller of straw hats. The family, before that, had probably come from Syria or Turkey. His recollections would sometimes claim Venice for his family. If their origins had to be in Italy, he preferred the most exotic of Italian places. He liked to think of himself as an aristocrat, even if not of the Anglo-Saxon variety. The Tories would fragment on the issue of free trade, and Disraeli, a loyalist, inherited some of the remaining prominence within the party. On becoming a minority government in 1852, he would achieve cabinet office for the first time, as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The experience was brief, but it whetted his appetite for power and position, which left him in a quandary as the Commons debated, year after year, the issue of amending its oaths requirement to permit Jews to sit. Several, including Lionel de Rothschild, one of the world's most influential bankers, had run time and time again, rejected after each election by their refusal to take a parliamentary oath on the Christian bible. Rothschild had already turned down a baronetcy from Victoria, as only a barony would place him in the House of Lords, where he might defy the oaths requirement in the upper house.
