Parmi cette foule d'ouvriers qui déborde du trottoir et suit la grande chaussée en pente, une petite ombre se hâte furtivement..." Emile Zola, Alphonse Daudet est né à Nîmes le 13 mai 1840 et est mort à Paris en 1897. Il laisse le souvenir d'un être généreux , plein de sollicitude pour ses camarades malchanceux et attentif à son époque : il sera l'un des premiers à apprécier et à prendre la défense des impressionnistes. Reconnu tardivement de son vivant par ses pairs, Alphonse Daudet aura toutefois le soutien de Zola, des frères Goncourt, et de Maupassant. Il sera également l'un des fondateurs de l'Académie Goncourt (sa mort prématurée, en 1897, l'empêchant d'en être membre, 1903). Très aimé du grand public qui voit en lui le chantre généreux et tendre d'une Provence idéale en même temps qu'un Dickens à la française, Daudet fut à la fois romancier, conteur, dramaturge et poète. Il n'en souffre pas moins d'être prisonnier du succès

Une grande usine... On est en train de fermer les portes. La vapeur des machines, abandonnée au ruisseau, siffle et s'échappe avec un bruit de locomotive à l'arrêt. Un peu de fumée monte encore des hautes cheminées, et l'atmosphère chaude, qui flotte au-dessus des bâtiments déserts, semble la respiration, l'haleine même du travail qui vient de finir. Tout est éteint. Une seule petite lumière brille encore au rez-de-chaussée, derrière un grillage, c'est la lampe du caissier. Voici qu'elle disparaît, juste au moment où la femme arrive. Allons ! C'est trop tard. La paye est finie... Comment va-t-elle faire maintenant ? Où le trouver pour lui arracher sa semaine, l'empêcher de la boire ?... On a tant besoin d'argent à la maison ! Les enfants n'ont plus de bas. Le boulanger n'est pas payé... Elle reste affaissée sur une borne, regardant vaguement dans la nuit, n'ayant plus la force de bouger.

He wrote his first novel at the age of 14. Women in Love (Les Amoureuses, 1857), his first published book, is a compilation of poems dedicated to Marie Rieu, his lover at that time. Letters from My Mill (Lettres de mon moulin, 1866), considered to be a French masterpieces, is composed by a group of delightful, Provence-inspired short stories. Son père, catholique et royaliste, est tisserand et négociant en soieries. Le jeune Alphonse Daudet est de santé fragile. Il passe 3 ans en Provence chez des paysans. Il y découvre et apprend le parler provençal. La fabrique du père d'Alphonse Daudet périclite et doit être fermée. C'est un drame pour toute la famille qui s'exile à Lyon, capitale de la soierie. Alphonse Daudet bénéficie d'une bourse qui lui permettra de poursuivre ses études au lycée Ampère de Lyon jusqu'en 1856. Il est plutôt un bon élève , mais il traîne sa condition modeste comme un boulet . Il doit essuyer brimades et humiliations : " Eh, vous le petit chose ...", expression qu'il reprendra pour le titre du roman qu'il publiera en 1868. C'est la faillite définitive de son père. Ses parents se séparent. Alphonse doit interrompre ses études avant le bac. Il occupe alors un poste de surveillant au collège d'Alès. Cette expérience, plutôt décevante, ne dure que quelques mois. A la fin de l'année, Il va rejoindre son frère Ernest à Paris. Ce dernier le guidera pour ses premiers pas dans la capitale. Alphonse Daudet est alors totalement désargenté. Il vit dans de modestes chambres de bonne, au sein de groupes très animés qui discutent avec fougue sur la politique, la littérature, le pouvoir, les femmes ... Alphonse Daudet est un brillant orateur et a la plume vive. Il publie cette année-là un recueil de poèmes
