Extractions: Henry Clay was an American statesman known as "The Great Compromiser." Clay was a congressman, senator, speaker of the house, and secretary of state. He was a major promoter of the Missouri compromise in 1820, the compromise tariff of 1833 that ended the Nullification crisis, and the compromise of 1850, all efforts to balance the rights of free and slave states. He was twice the unsuccessful Whig candidate for president.

Extractions: The political legacy of Kentucky's Henry Clay was his unstinting devotion, in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate, to maintaining a strong American union. In 1842 a group of Philadelphia supporters commissioned John Neagle to paint a full-length portrait of Clay, who they expected would run as the Whig candidate for President in 1844. After painting this bust portrait, the artist completed the full-length, which was exhibited in Kentucky before it was brought to Philadelphia. Clay complimented Neagle: "I think you have happily delineated the character, as well as the physical appearance, of your subject." Clay did not win the 1844 election, however; the full-length portrait later became the property of the Union League of Philadelphia. A second version is at the United States Capitol.

Biographical/Historical Note The Butlers were cotton and sugar planters centered in West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana at a home called The Cottage. Judge Thomas Butler (1785-1847), born in Pennsylvania moved to Pinckneyville, Mississippi Territory in 1809. An attorney, Butler worked for many of the merchants in Southwest Mississippi and in the Feliciana Parishes. In 1813, he was appointed judge of the Louisiana Third District Court after moving to West Feliciana Parish near St. Francisville and later was elected to the United States Congress, serving as a representative from 1818 to 1821. Butler was a Louisiana gubernatorial candidate twice in the 1820's and lost both elections.

Extractions: Henry Clay, 1777-1852 On April 12, 1777, Henry Clay was born in Hanover County, Virginia. When he was only twenty years old, he studied to become an attorney under the well-known lawyer, George Wythe, in Richmond, Virginia. He passed the bar and moved to Lexington, Kentucky and developed a thriving practice. Henry soon married and was elected to the state legislature while still in his twenties, and served for six years until 1809. Political life was just beginning for Henry. In 1811 young Mr. Clay was elected to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he intermittently held office until 1825. In his first term he became known as one of the " War Hawks ." These were the young leaders who brought about the War of 1812. They were incensed by the poor treatment of the colonies by Great Britain and pushed for war. Mr. Clay was also chosen as one of the commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Ghent , ending that war.
