Extractions: John Buchan was born in Perth, the son of a Free Church of Scotland minister. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Fife, then the Gorbals in Glasgow. He received his higher education at Glasgow University and Brasenose College, Oxford. During his studies at Oxford, he published five books and many articles. After college he pursued as successful career as a barrister, Member of Parliament, writer, soldier and publisher. His biography is chronicled, to some degree, in Memory Hold the Door, also known as Pilgrim's Way. Click here for a pointer to an article which reviews Buchan's life as one of a man of action versus a man of letters. In 1907, he married Susan Grosvenor. It was a happy marriage resulting in one daughter and three sons. He became Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield in 1935 and the thirty fifth Governor General of Canada, which position he held until his death in 1940. Clan Buchan has a long history in Scotland. I received an email lately from a lady who is working to bring together information about the Buchan clan. Her web page has much history of the Clan Buchan and is worthy of a visit.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback John Buchan (1875-1940) - First Baron Tweedsmuir of Enfield Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet, and novelist, whose most famous thriller was THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS (1915), his 27th book. Alfred Hitchcock's film version of the story, made in 1935, is ranked as one of the director's best works. Buchan published nearly 30 novels and seven collections of short stories. "Public life is regarded as the crown of a career, and to young men it is the worthiest ambition. Politics is still the greatest and the most honorable adventure." After returning to London Buchan specialized in tax law and continued to write. In 1906 Buchan started to work for the publisher Thomas Nelson and Sons. He revitalized publication of pocket editions of great literature and virtually edited The Spectator . In 1907 he married Susan Charlotte Grosvenor; they had three sons and one daughter. During World War I Buchan was a war correspondent before joining the army. While ill in bed in 1914 during the first months of the war, he wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps . He served on the Headquarters Staff of the British Army in France as temporary Lieutenant Colonel (1916-17). When Lloyd George was appointed Prime Minister, Buchan was made Director of Information (1917-18) and then for a short time Director of Intelligence, a brief interlude in Buchan's career of which he did not much talk. After the war Buchan became a director of the news agency Reuters.

His family moved to Fife in 1876, and in 1888 to Glasgow, where Buchan attended the Hutcheson's Grammar School. In 1892 he won a bursary to study at Glasgow University, where he was taught by the Classics scholar Gilbert Murray and the philosopher Henry Jones. In 1895 he won a scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford, where he took a first in Greats in 1899, and won the Newdigate Prize in Poetry in 1898. During this period he read manuscripts for the publisher John Lane, and participated fully in University activities, becoming president of the Oxford union in his final year. He also wrote prolifically, publishing his first novel, Sir Quixote of the Moors , in 1896, and contributing to The Yellow Book . Other works during this period included John Burnet of Barns (1898), a historical romance portraying the lives of the Covenanters in the seventeenth century, and A Lost Lady of the Old Years (1899), a novel set in Scotland in 1745.

He was educated at Hutcheson's Grammar School and the University of Glasgow, and had already begun to write when he won a scholarship to Brasenose College, Oxford, from where he took a First in Greats in 1899. Between 1901 and 1903 Buchan worked on the High Commissioner's staff in South Africa; after returning to Britain he pursued several careers, including journalism. In 1907, he married Susan Grosvenor. It was a happy marriage resulting in one daughter and three sons. He was Member of Parliament for the Scottish Universities from 1927 to 1935, when he was appointed Governor-General of Canada. He became Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield in 1935 and the thirty fifth Governor General of Canada. It was in Canada that Buchan died, on 11 February 1940, Buchan's thrillers are a variation on the same basic plot. The hero discovers a conspiracy to end civilisation and sets out single-handed to frustrate it. The pleasure of Buchan is the magnificently described wild countryside he sets his stories in (usually the Scottish Highlands or the plains of South Africa).

Douglas", he was educated at Hutcheson's Grammar School, Glasgow. At Glasgow University Buchan produced an anthology of Bacon 's essays, and a novel deriving from Conan Doyle 's recent Brigadier Gerard stories, blended with the Borders and their Covenant legends he knew so well, Sir Quixote of the moors . Thence he went to Oxford which made him take another first degree as though Glasgow could not award one. Buchan's acquiescence in this dishonour to his country of origin, and the first laurels it had given him, symbolised the dilemma of his literary life. He became a well-known writer of fiction (including books such as The Thirty-Nine Steps ), poetry and history (including books such as A History of the Great War and Lord Minto Buchan dedicated his book Augustus : "To my friend William Lyon Mackenzie King, Four Times Prime Minister of Canada." Buchan was appointed Governor General of Canada in February 1935 and took office in November of that year. At this time, he was given the title 1st Baron Tweedsmuir. King's diary gives a description of the arrival of the Tweedsmuirs and the installation of Lord Tweedsmuir as Governor General. (Diary, November 2, 1935) Tweedsmuir travelled widely in Canada and he instituted the Governor General's Literary Awards. He died on February 11, 1940, the first Canadian Governor General since Confederation to die in office. A year after Tweedsmuir's death, King continued to think of him as being, with Norman Rogers and O.D. Skelton, one of "the three men who spiritually were closer to me than any other." (Diary, January 28, 1941) In 1955, the John Buchan Papers were purchased from the Tweedsmuir family by Queen's University, through the Office of the Rector, L.W. Brockington. A microfilm copy is available at the National Archives (MG27-IIIA5).
