   Extractions: Louisa May Alcott is best known for her creation of the classic work "Little Women" , the story of four sisters growing up in a New England town during the mid 1800s. Alcott's father, Bronson, was a philosopher and educational reformer whose idealistic projects kept the family in poverty; financial security did not come until "Little Women". However, the Alcott family was rich in their friends, which included such noted figures as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Like her father, Alcott practiced her beliefs, working for the right of women to vote and for the temperance (anti-drinking) movement. The March sistersMeg, Jo, Beth, and Amy have been immortalized in the movies as well; the most famous "Jo" was Katherine Hepburn.

The male narrator mistrusts the brilliant actress "LaJeune," but though he proves her vaunted youth a fraud, he finds it perpetrated for the sake of her invalid husband, not, as he suspected, for her opium-eating or gambling habit. Like "LaJeune," Alcott's actress stories imply that a woman can preserve her integrity while pursuing a public career but that a patriarchal society forces women to become actresses in their private lives. Thus, Judith Fetterley has observed of Jean Muir, the professional actress turned governess in Alcott's best-known sensation story, "Behind a Mask," that in order to analyze the needs of every person in the house, Muir must be supremely conscious. She began work at an early age as an occasional teacher and as a writerher first book was Flower Fables (1854), tales originally written for Ellen, daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson Henry David Thoreau , but had chiefly been in the hands of her father; and in her girlhood and early womanhood she had fully shared the trials and poverty incident to the life of a peripatetic idealist. In a newspaper sketch entitled "Transcendental Wild Oats", afterwards reprinted in the volume Silver Pitchers (1876), she narrated, with a delicate humour, which showed what her literary powers might have been if freed from drudgery, the experiences of her family during an experiment towards communistic "plain living and high thinking" at "Fruitlands", in the town of Harvard, Massachusetts, in 1843. Louisa and her sisters, Anna, Elizabeth, and May grew up in Massachusetts with signifigant New England authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller as friends and neighbors. The entire Alcott family was talented and immensely literate. Though often unemployed, Bronson Alcott was a transcendentalist philosopher and radical educator who had a profound influence on Louisa's life. Louisa never married, yet from a fairly young age she began helping to support her entire family by working as a domestic, a teacher, and eventually a writer. While never directly invovled, Alcott was a staunch abolitionist and supported the women's suffrage and temperance movements. Her feminist views are best seen in the sensational tales and thrillers of female power, unhappiness, and revenge she wrote under the pseudonym "A.M. Barnard." In 1868, Alcott responded to a publisher's request for a "girls' book." Drawing upon the journals she was encouraged to keep as a girl and her memories and experiences of her own family and growing up, Alcott produced the domestic novel
