Extractions: Zambia Zambia's history goes back to the debut of Homo sapiens In the 18th century, Portuguese explorers following the routes of Swahili-Arab slavers from the coast into the interior became the first known European visitors. After the Zulu nation to the south began scattering its neighbors, victims of the Difaqane (forced migration) began arriving in Zambia in the early 19th century. Squeezed out of Zimbabwe, the Makalolo people moved into southern Zambia, pushing the Tonga out of the way and grabbing Lozi territory on the upper Zambezi River. The celebrated British explorer David Livingstone travelled up the Zambezi in the 1850s, searching for a route into the interior of Southern Africa, hoping to introduce Christianity and European civilisation to combat the horrors of the slave trade. Livingstone's efforts attracted missionaries, who in turn brought hunters and prospectors in their wake. In the 1890s much of Zambia came under the control of the British South Africa Company (BSAC), which sought to prevent further Portuguese expansion in the area. Under the BSAC, the area became Northern Rhodesia in 1911. At about the same time, vast copper ore deposits were discovered in the north-central part of the territory (the area now called the Copperbelt). Large-scale mining operations were set up and local Africans employed as labourers. They had little choice: they needed money to pay the hut tax introduced by the Europeans, and their only other source of income vanished when much of their farmland was appropriated by European settlers. The colony was put under direct British control in 1924; Lusaka became the capital in 1936.

Extractions: Berkeley Anthropologists Have Their Say Anthropologist Elizabeth Colson doesn't often think of the past. If asked, however, she easily recalls the year 1946, when she first traveled to Africa. Taking field supplies from Johannesburg, she and two other researchers journeyed for three days to Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). There she met a fellow anthropologist, J. Desmond Clark. "Desmond somehow knew we were coming, and he met our train," she says. Colson, an American from Minnesota, and Clark, a Londoner, crossed paths that year when she became senior research officer and then director of the Rhodes- Livingstone Institute. He was curator of the David Livingstone Memorial Museum. "With Desmond, of course, prehistory was everything," Colson says, "although as curator of the museum he had to be interested in contemporary things, too." Desmond Clark's death in February 2002 ended this friendship of more than half a century. But the stories survive. Clark, Colson, and three other anthropologists recently documented their experiences through oral histories. Available as manuscripts and on the Web, the interviews complement Bancroft's other holdings in anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. As told in the oral histories, Colson and Clark each spent substantial time in Africa, directing institutions and lighting up the developing field of anthropology with their work. While he pursued prehistory, she explored social-cultural issues among the Plateau and Gwembe Tonga. Both joined the Berkeley faculty in the 1960s.

Extractions: Geography and Climate The one word that could be used to describe the geography of Southern Africa would be "high". The majority of the land is dominated by the Southern Plateau with elevations between 3,000 to 5,000 feet (900 1,500 meters) in elevation. Around the edges of the Plateau are a series of mountains and cliffs called the Great Escarpment. This includes the highlands in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Other highlands are found in northern Malawi and northeastern Zambia. From the highlands, the land drops to the coastal lowlands of South Africa and Mozambique. Southern Africa is bordered by two of the worlds oceans, the Atlantic on the west and the Indian on the south and east.
COMESA History COMESA history. of a mechanism for the promotion of subregional economic integration Themeeting, which was held in Lusaka, zambia, recommended the creation of http://www.comesa.int/backgrnd/backhist.htm
Extractions: COMESA History 1. At the first and second conferences of independent African States, held in Accra, Ghana, in April 1958 and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in June 1960, respectively, economic problems to be faced by independent Africa were discussed. There was a consensus that the smallness and fragmentation of post-colonial African national markets would constitute a major obstacle to the diversification of economic activity, away from a concentration on production of a narrow range of primary exports, to the creation of modern and internationally competitive enterprises, which would satisfy domestic needs and meet export requirements. It was, therefore, agreed that African countries which had gained political independence, should promote economic co-operation among themselves. 2. Two options were advocated for the implementation of the integration strategy in Africa: a) the Pan-African, all-embracing regional approach, which envisaged the immediate creation of a regional continental economic arrangement; and b) the geographically narrower approach that would have its roots at the sub-regional levels and build on sub-regional co-operation arrangements to achieve geographically wider forms of co-operation arrangements. 1. The origins of the COMESA can be traced as far back as the mid-sixties. Before the Lagos Plan of Action and the Final Act of Lagos were adopted, the countries of Eastern and Southern Africa had already initiated the process towards creating an Eastern and Southern African co-operation arrangement.
Regional Integration Facilitation Forum Forum (RIFF) programme is the history of its Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, zambia and Zimbabwe. participating in a new regional economic integration http://www.comesa.int/business/riff.htm
Extractions: Regional Integration Facilitation Forum(RIFF) The history of the Regional Integration Facilitation Forum (RIFF) programme is the history of its predecessor, the Initiative to Facilitate Cross-Border Trade, Investment and Payments in Eastern and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean (for short: Cross-Border Initiative or CBI), which has been in existence since 1992. In fact, it was in May 2000 that the CBI Steering Committee decided that, as it was entering its second phase, the CBI should be renamed the Regional Integration Facilitation Forum. The origins of the CBI go back to the Maastricht Conference on African Development in July 1990 where a request for more effective regional integration was formulated and a reflection on the regional dimension of structural adjustment took place. This request was made at the launching of the Global Coalition for Africa (GCA) by African Heads of State. The CBI therefore has arisen from a consensus by Eastern and Southern African countries and their co-operating partners (EU, World Bank, IMF and ADB) on the need for closer regional co-operation and integration in Africa. These countries and their co-operating partners recognised the disappointing results achieved by previous attempts to create closer regional ties in sub-Saharan Africa, but shared the view that, despite these disappointments, effective co-operation and integration would assist African countries to develop their economies, within the framework of the global economy, and so improve the living conditions of the people of the continent.

A product of a two-day planning session, the plan shows the main research, education and advocacy activities tailored to achieve faster and effective debt cancellation for poverty eradication in Zambia The following shows the main areas of focus, activities, target audience and key messages of Jubilee-Zambia for the year. These issues are based on the main challenge identified by the Secretariat during the planning session. The secretariat felt that it would be a challenge to keep the momentum and pressure for debt cancellation, especially with the changes in the global Jubilee movement by end of the Jubilee year 2000. However, keen to achieve the Jubilee goal, the secretariat is highly optimistic and committed to ensure that the call continues until the demand is fully met This is based on the endorsement by our national and local partners that the Jubilee cause is not time but goal bound!
