Booker T. Washington embraced photography as the artistic medium to represent himself and Tuskegee Institute because it was economical, technical, utilitarian, and aesthetic: an apt form for a man who preached a gospel of thrift, industry, self-sufficiency, and beauty. Advancements in photography at the end of the nineteenth century allowed Washington to be simultaneously better known and more elusive—an international celebrity with a multitude of identities.This book examines how initially, Washington cultivated a picture of Victorian grace to appeal to elite white America's policy of gradual reform, and images of the economic and cultural results of Tuskegee's industrial curriculum became publicity photographs. But in the last decade of his life, he shed the passivity he had presented to the white world, speaking directly to black audiences through the cameras of black photographers, and challenging racist popular culture by visually demonstrating social and cultural equality.Washington should be credited with not only launching the careers of several black photographers but also with establishing the early aesthetic of the New Negro. UW SOUL study- a great resource
Research on the effect of the college experience on students has often been done, but the UW SOUL study is the best and most comprehensive of these projects.What brings this project to life is the sections of interviews with students that are presented. As you read the words of these students and match that with the survey data, the reader begins to discover what really goes on during a students' university experience. We begin to see why the academic adjustment can be so difficult and, more importantly, the authors provide suggestions on how this can be remedied. As the reader examines the data and absorbs the students' responses given in interviews, it becomes possible to see what it is that students learn in college and how this learning takes place.
Inside the Undergraduate Experience is essential reading for instructors, administrators, student development personnel, and anyone who wants to better understand the college experience from the viewpoint of the student.

Drill team performance is a phenomenal expression of African American rhythmic dance performance created exclusively by African American youth. The purpose of the book is to understand and document what young African American females say about their dance creativity through their self-evaluation of how and why they perform on drill teams in urban public schools. In examining the socio-cultural institutional contexts in which drill exists and flourishes, this book will enable readers to better understand black female dance creativity according to the young African American females who created this phenomenon.This bookgives substantitive voice and vision to the creative self-expressiveness of how young African American females represent themselves during their drill team performance amidst the popular gendered perceptions and stereotypical cultural expectations of others who attempt to influence and mediate their dance creativity. While drill team performance was bonding and liberatory for these young African American females, they were subject to other's expectations about how their bodies should move on the drill floor.Young African American females on drill teams "faced down" stereotypical images of women and sexism in expressing their creativity during a drill team performance. Race, gender, and sexism are fundamental factors which influence black female youth identity within contemporary urban dance culture. Young African American females have a unique vantage point about their creative role and style in performing drill routines. Drill was empowering for the individual and the team. The self-reflection and self-evaluation of young African American females about their drill team performance style within the contemporary urban dance arena has not been explored nor recorded.
