Book Description
Booker T. Washington embraced photography as the artistic medium to represent himself and Tuskegee Institute because it was economical, technical, utilitarian, and aesthetic: an apt form for a man who preached a gospel of thrift, industry, self-sufficiency, and beauty. Advancements in photography at the end of the nineteenth century allowed Washington to be simultaneously better known and more elusive—an international celebrity with a multitude of identities. This book examines how initially, Washington cultivated a picture of Victorian grace to appeal to elite white America's policy of gradual reform, and images of the economic and cultural results of Tuskegee's industrial curriculum became publicity photographs. But in the last decade of his life, he shed the passivity he had presented to the white world, speaking directly to black audiences through the cameras of black photographers, and challenging racist popular culture by visually demonstrating social and cultural equality.Washington should be credited with not only launching the careers of several black photographers but also with establishing the early aesthetic of the New Negro. From 1895-1915, Washington was the central figure in African-American culture, supporting black artists telling black stories in the contemporary Victorian aesthetic, and showing how blacks could equal whites artistically and culturally ... Product Description

Foreword by Peter Ewell

The University of Washington's Study of Undergraduate Learning (UW SOUL) tracked 304 entering freshmen and transfer students as they moved through their college experience from fall 1999 to spring 2003. Unparalleled in its scope, this longitudinal study focused on six areas of learning: writing, critical thinking/problem solving, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, understanding and appreciating diversity, and personal growth.

This book provides faculty, staff, and administrators at two- and four-year institutions with a model of assessment that both captures the complexity of the undergraduate experience and offers practical information about how to improve teaching and learning. Data from surveys, open-ended email questions, interviews, focus groups, and portfolios make it possible for the authors to create case studies of individual learning paths over time, as well as to report the group s aggregate experience. Honoring the authenticity of student voices, this book illuminates the central roles played by the academic disciplines and by faculty in undergraduate learning, offering powerful evidence for the argument that assessment of student learning is most complete and most useful when conducted at the department level.

5-0 out of 5 stars UW SOUL study- a great resource
Research on the effect of the college experience on students has often been done, but the UW SOUL study is the best and most comprehensive of these projects. What brings this project to life is the sections of interviews with students that are presented. As you read the words of these students and match that with the survey data, the reader begins to discover what really goes on during a students' university experience. We begin to see why the academic adjustment can be so difficult and, more importantly, the authors provide suggestions on how this can be remedied. As the reader examines the data and absorbs the students' responses given in interviews, it becomes possible to see what it is that students learn in college and how this learning takes place.
Inside the Undergraduate Experience is essential reading for instructors, administrators, student development personnel, and anyone who wants to better understand the college experience from the viewpoint of the student.

From the supplier: The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has derived significant cost savings by opting to jointly purchase a headquarters building with three other associations. The acquisition and renovation of a 66-year old building in Washington, DC, took 18 months to plan and was made possible by the use of tax-exempt industrial revenue bonds to finance the joint-purchase. CASE and its three association partners selected Greenwell Goetz Architects to develop a cohesive design scheme that allowed each association to create an office plan tailored to its requirements.

Book Description
Fire Safety in the Washington home is a non-fiction, children's book that talks about fire safety. Your child's safety is imperative. Children need to know the importance of fire drills and having a designated meeting place. It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure that their children are aware of the dangers of playing with matches and other fire hazards. It is a serious danger in our communities, and unfortunately, many lives are lost at the hands of children when they are playing with matches and lighters.Years ago, a Public Education/Public Information Officer, Las Vegas Fire Chief David Washington, invited the neighborhood children to his home and taught them, as well as his own children about fire safety. He ensured that the children knew the importance of fire safety. He felt that it was his duty to protect the children from their own curiosity that could endanger all. In this book, one of his daughters, April Washington, tells one story of their many lessons. ... Read more

Book Description
Drill team performance is a phenomenal expression of African American rhythmic dance performance created exclusively by African American youth. The purpose of the book is to understand and document what young African American females say about their dance creativity through their self-evaluation of how and why they perform on drill teams in urban public schools. In examining the socio-cultural institutional contexts in which drill exists and flourishes, this book will enable readers to better understand black female dance creativity according to the young African American females who created this phenomenon. This bookgives substantitive voice and vision to the creative self-expressiveness of how young African American females represent themselves during their drill team performance amidst the popular gendered perceptions and stereotypical cultural expectations of others who attempt to influence and mediate their dance creativity. While drill team performance was bonding and liberatory for these young African American females, they were subject to other's expectations about how their bodies should move on the drill floor.Young African American females on drill teams "faced down" stereotypical images of women and sexism in expressing their creativity during a drill team performance. Race, gender, and sexism are fundamental factors which influence black female youth identity within contemporary urban dance culture. Young African American females have a unique vantage point about their creative role and style in performing drill routines. Drill was empowering for the individual and the team. The self-reflection and self-evaluation of young African American females about their drill team performance style within the contemporary urban dance arena has not been explored nor recorded. Moreover, the emerging viewpoints and visibility of young African American females on a drill team is undocumented in the literature. This book will stimulate further awareness and explorationof the contributions of young African American females to dance culture as well as inquiry and discussion about the impact of gender and sex in youth dance ethnology. Undoubtedly, this book expands the body of knowledge about drillin' outside the historically Greek organizations on Black college campusesand contributes to the field ofurban youth dance creativity. ... Book Description
What would be the odds of a poor Mexican boy who migrated with his family to southern California in the 1920s rising through the ranks of the American education system to become the first Hispanic principal of a junior and senior high school in San Diego, the second Hispanic to be a college president in California, and to serve in the administrations of four U.S. presidents?

Armando Rodriguez spoke no English when he first set foot in the United States and was just old enough to start school in a district with few Spanish-speaking teachers. But with parents who emphasized the importance of education and who taught him the value of hard work, Armando Rodriguez became fluent in English, received a doctorate in bilingual education, and was instrumental in developing the field of bilingual education while serving as Assistant Commissioner of Education for the nation.

Rodriguez recalls his inspirational journey from a short child who was so dark he was nicknamed "Shadow" to being influential in shaping education on district, state, and national levels. Some still call him Shadow, though it is now spoken with respect and admiration for an immigrant who overcame many obstacles to become an instrument of change for his country.

Rodriguez recalls his inspirational journey from his childhood as a poor immigrant to the highest levels of the department of education under four presidents. ... Read more
