Extractions: The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 until 1815. The war occurred for several reasons. During the late 1700s and the early 1800s, England was at war with France. England began to face a shortage of skilled sailors. To acquire more men for its navy, Great Britain began to stop American ships and impress (kidnap) sailors off of them. England also tried to prevent United States farmers from trading with the French. Finally, English soldiers occupied territory belonging to the United States, despite Great Britain's promise to remove these soldiers in the Treaty of Paris (1783) at the end of the American Revolution. Most of the men were along the Great Lakes, providing Indians, like Tecumseh, with support for their battles against American settlers. In 1812, President James Madison could no longer stand for England's actions and declared war. The first battles of the war occurred in 1813. The United States hoped to invade Canada, but England successfully rebuffed the assault. America did have two important victories, though: the victory of Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie, giving the United States control of that Great Lake, and the Battle of the Thames, where General William Henry Harrison defeated a combined English and Indian force led by Henry Proctor and Tecumseh. Tecumseh died in the battle. In 1814, the war turned against the Americans. An English army captured and held Washington, DC, for a brief period. Before the British evacuated the city, they set several of the buildings, including the White House, on fire. By late in 1814, both the Americans and the English were ready to conclude the war. The two sides would sign the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814. Before news of the peace treaty reached the soldiers in America, one final battle, the Battle of New Orleans, occurred in January 1815.

This frontier extended along the Southern area of the Great Lakes, west of the Mississippi River and south to New Orleans and Spanish Florida, with St. Louis being the western-most settlement. On the 25th of July, 1812, the first blood of the War of 1812 was shed in a skirmish not far from Detroit. For two years the Second Infantry found itself constantly engaged against hostile Indians who had been incited by British agents to harass the American settlements. During this period, Captain Zachary Taylor, later commander of the First Regiment and 12th President of the United States, won his first fame commanding a company of the 7th Infantry in the successful defense of Fort Harrison, Indiana. Also, during this period the Regiment was erroneously awarded campaign streamers for Canada and Lundy's Lane. None of the parent regiments of the present 1st Infantry were present in that theater of operations. The Department of the Army has ruled, however, that once streamers have been awarded they will not be taken away Later in the war, on 25 July 1814, the Regiment fought in the Battle of Niagara and six days later participated in the siege of Fort Erie.

From the Canadian point of view, the most recent and best is actually a part of a book, compiled by Donald E. Graves in his updating of J. Mackay Hitsman's The incredible War of 1812 , listed in the General Works section. The brevity of entries in this bibliography sometimes makes it difficult to identify items accurately, but it contains a wealth of material. Smith and Fredriksen approach the war from the American point of view. Fredriksen has located a great many previously little-known contemporary accounts and personal narratives and, since the publication of his bibliography, has edited and published a considerable number, which are not listed here. The Encyclopedia of the War of 1812 , by the Heidlers, listed in its own section, has a valuable bibliography, again with an American emphasis. General bibliographies of Canadian history also provide useful material. J.M. Bumsted's bibliographic essay in Canadian history : a reader's guide is an excellent introduction to the war, although some important works have come out since it was published.

Extractions: written by Anthony Wonderley, Ph.D - Nation Historian Members of a sovereign nation, Oneidas feel they can't be forced morally or legally to serve in the armed forces of another nation. But they have always volunteered to fight on behalf of the American government. Oneidas have served in the armed forces of the United States from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm. Well over 100 Oneidas (out of a total population of some 650) fought on the American side during the British-American struggle called the War of 1812 (1812-1814). They fought in several battles (including virtually the only American victories) on two fronts. Oneidas were active on the Northern New York Frontier around Sackets Harbor, New York, the major U.S. naval base on Lake Ontario, and they fought near Buffalo on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Part of Ontario today, that region then was called the Niagara Frontier by the Americans and Upper Canada by the English and British Canadians. Oneida sentiments were expressed in the Six Nations declaration of war in July of 1813: "we do hereby command and advise all the War Chiefs to call forth immediately their warriors under them to put them in motion to protect their rights and liberties which our brethren the Americans are now defending" (Babcock 1927:108). Several days earlier, an Iroquois speaker had told his people "that the country was invaded, that they had one common interest with the people of the United States, that they had every thing dear at stake, that the time had arrived for them to show their friendship for their brethren of the United States not only in words but in deeds" (Snyder 1978:69).

The war lasted for over two years, and while it ended much like it started; in stalemate; it was in fact a war that once and for all confirmed American Independence. The offensive actions of the United States failed in every attempt to capture Canada. But in this unhallowed ground, forgotten by the country that sent them off to fight, lie the bodies of 188 American sailors and soldiers taken prisoner by British regulars and Canadian colonial forces during the War of 1812 ''No doubt their loved ones wept, but they seem to have vanished from the memory of the US,'' said Guy MacLean, a leader of the Northwest Arm Heritage Association and one of the Halifax residents whose recent fight to save Deadman's Island from development ended up pricking the conscience of American veterans groups and, finally, the US government. ''What started as a very local controversy over this land became a history lesson that reverberated on both sides of the border,'' MacLean said.
