The virus has been found in Africa, western Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean region of Europe and recently in the United States. Mosquitoes become infected with the virus after feeding on infected wild birds and then transmit the virus through bites to people, animals and other birds. Horses Can West Nile virus cause disease in horses? In 1999, 25 New York horses with neurological signs were identified as cases of WNV infection. These horses presented with signs of ataxia, difficulty walking, knuckling over, head tilt, muscle tremors, and the inability to rise. Of these 25 horses, nine (36%) died or were euthanized. WNV was identified in the tissue samples and specific WNV antibody was found. The 16 surviving horses all recovered and also developed WNV antibody titers. In 2000, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed 60 horses with WNV infection from the states of Connecticut (7), Delaware (4), Massachusetts (1), New Jersey (27), New York (19), Pennsylvania (1) and Rhode Island (1). Thirty-seven horses survived the infection and 23 (38%) died or were euthanized. In Connecticut, 4 horses recovered and 3 horses were euthanized (43%). In 2001 over 400 clinical cases of WNV infection in horses from 19 states were reported.

The range of WNV has since expanded to include the entire eastern U.S. WNV is typically found in Africa, Europe, and Asia (primarily in countries bordering the Mediterranean Basin). The majority of people who contract WNV develop inapparent infections or a mild form of the disease involving headache, fever, muscle pains, neck stiffness, or swollen lymph nodes. Persons with severe infections experience high fever, disorientation, central nervous system signs, convulsions, and coma. The case fatality rate for WNV is approximately 10%. This severe form of the disease is seen primarily in elderly persons. WNV also causes mortality in birds and horses. Distribution of WNV In 1999, WNV was identified in NYC and surrounding areas in NJ, CT, and MD, and during 2000 the virus spread to western NY and was found as far south as NC. Less than a week later, following a Hamas attack on an Israeli school bus, the Palestinian chief of police in Gaza, Ghazi Jabali, issued orders to open fire-if necessary-on Hamas and other Islamic activists. The death of the 16-year-old Tarifi (a nephew of a Palestinian legislator and Fatah official), and the prospect of violent resistance if Yasir Arafat and the Palestinian security forces seek to disarm Hamas and various secular opposition groups, points up the dangerous crosscurrents of violence and instability running through Palestinian society. Extractions: Since 1978, our nonprofit student club has managed the historic West Campus Stables as a resource for UCSB students, faculty and staff. Horses have lived at the stables for at least a century. A major goal of our club is to run an environmentally sensitive, affordable stables for UCSB students and their horses. To restore and enhance native habitats and wildlife, we are developing a comprehensive restoration plan for the West Campus Stables area. Proposal: Our stables is a nesting area for many birds, including Great-Horned Owls, Barn Owls, Red-shouldered Hawks and hundreds of Cliff Swallows. The eucalyptus trees surrounding the stables are roosts and nest sites for these birds. We propose to restore native riparian woodlands and assure continued habitat for these birds by planting native trees to gradually replace the aging exotic eucalyptus. We will plant Western Sycamore in the degraded riparian corridor which connects the IVPRD Camino Corto property and the north finger of Devereux Slough. To enhance biodiversity of wildlife in the area and provide potential habitat for California Quail (recently extinct at Del Sol Vernal Pools), we will plant Elderberry, Wild Rose and Wild Blackberry to increase the cover, food and native shrub diversity of the north facing slope of the property above the riparian corridor.
