1-0 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed
After ordering well over one hundred books from Amazon, this is the only book that I have been truly dissapointed in. At almost $28.00, I expected a book full of glossy, up to date photographs, with nice descriptions. Instead, the pictures were well over 30 years old, quite small, and of minimal quality.
How the publishers ever came up with a price of almost $28.00 for this pathetic excuse for a book is amazing. This will be my first 'return' to Amazon in over fifteen years. ... Read more

Excerpt: Gatuna, Uganda -Gatuna (Katuna) is located on the Ugandan border with Rwanda, in extreme southwestern Uganda. The town is located in Kamuganguzi Sub-county, Ndorwa County, in Kabale District. This location is approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi), by road, south of Kabale, the largest city in the sub-region. The coordinates of the town are:00 25 48S, 30 01 03E (Latitude:-1.4300; Longitude:30.0175). Gatuna is a major entrance point to Rwanda and handles most of Rwanda's imports and exports as most goods from the coast to Rwanda pass through Uganda. Due to increased commercial and tourist traffic, Gatuna is a fast-growing town. In the pre-colonial times Gatuna was a very important place. When the first Bakiga (named after their ancestor Kashyiga) arrived in the hills of Kagarama and Rwanyena, fearing to cross the big lake which they named Bunyonyi, (too big that small birds could not cross it), they discovered a shorter route along the plains where there was a tree under which they rested, played and prayed giving thanks to their ancestors before they could proceed to the hills. They called the place Gatuna for a meeting place. However, some fellow Rwandese immigrants who came following their relatives lost their way and went to Rubaya. That time, they migrated from Rwanda in places like Byumba, Murindi, Ruhengyere, Mukaniga and Buganza (especially from the Bumbogo Kingdom) in search of fertile land and to escape natural...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25447456 ... From the author: Subsistence farmers near Kibale National Park, Uganda, fear and resent many wildlife species. In this article I compare records of crop damage by wildlife and livestock with local complaints about the worst animals and the most vulnerable crops. I discuss the concordance and discrepancies in complaints versus actual damage in light of physical parameters of risk and of social factors that shape perceptions and vulnerabilities. Crop losses were greatest at the edge of the forest, where immigrants are disproportionately represented. State proprietorship of wildlife amplifies local vulnerability and constrains traditional coping strategies, such as hunting. Keywords: East Africa, risk perception, Uganda, wildlife conservation.
