4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what its called
Although good, but very BASIC guide to decathlon. If you're envolved in Track & Field already, 99.9% chance is that you already know 99% of what this book is talking about; things such as common injuries, basic nutrition needs, what to bring with you to the meet, training with (a) partner(s) is better than alone, implements needed for decathlon (shot, discus, javeline...)...etc

As far as training, this book gives you a BASIC, sample, two-week split for traing 10 events.

Youmay learn some history of the event however; Find out how top U.S.A. decathletes were introduced to the event.

The part I found most useful for myself, is the scoring tables. Gives you an idea of what performances in each event will lead to a world class score.

Bottom line, this book is good, but VERY BASIC. Good for encouraging future decathletes, and gives you an idea of what its all about. If you're looking for a serious traing guide - look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Olympic Historians on John Lucas
Here's what the academic specialist are saying about John Lucas' book:

"In 1962, six years before I first met him, John Lucas defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Maryland on "Pierre de Coubertin and the Formative Years of the Modern Olympic Movement."Almost a half century later, following 8 books and some 250 scholarly articles on Olympic history, comes this book, "The Best of John Lucas," compiled by the world's doyen of seriously researched, thoroughly documented, and passionately written Olympic history. As I have done, enjoy!"
(Dr. Robert Barney, founder of OLYMPICA:THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OLYMPIC STUDIES and past-president of the North American Society for Sport History.)

"For me, he is the Nestor of the writing of Olympic history. Lucas is a historian who places great value in the careful study of primary sources and has often reached new and interesting conclusions."

(Dr. Karl Lennartz, founder member of the International Society of Olympic Historians, 1996 member of the board of directors, 2000 vice-president, 2004 president; since2003 - together with Dr. Stephan Wassong - editor of the journalJournal of Olympic History)Rethinking the Olympics: Cultural Histories of the Modern Games ... Product Description
It is July 1928, and Canada’s first women’s Olympic team — “The Matchless Six” — is heading to Amsterdam, the site of the ninth Olympiad of the modern era. Canada’s finest female track-and-field athletes, having survived rigorous training and the grueling selection process at the Olympic Trials, were determined to take their big talent and big dreams to the top. Meet Jane Bell, Myrtle Cook, Bobbie Rosenfeld, and Ethel Smith, the “Flying Four” who comprised Canada’s first relay team; Ethel Catherwood, the “Saskatoon Lily,” who became the champion high-jumper and the most photographed female athlete at the Olympic Games; and Jean Thompson, the youngest member of the team at seventeen, who became one of the world’s most outstanding middle-distance runners. It was an impressive achievement:

“A team of six from Canada, a country of less than ten million, competed against 121 athletes from 21 countries, whose total population was 300 million.” Impressive indeed.

For many years, historian Ron Hotchkiss has been fascinated by “The Matchless Six,” the conquering heroines who took Amsterdam by storm. His extensive research has led to this riveting account, full of black-and-white archival photographs, of the events leading up to and following that fateful summer in the history of Canadian sport. ... Excerpt: The Australian Championships in Athletics or Australian Open Track and Field Championships are held annually to determine Australia's champion athletes in a range of Track and Field events. The championships are the primary qualification trial for athletes wishing to compete at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships. The event is conducted by Athletics Australia. The championships were first held in 1890 under the name Inter Colonial Meet. The competition was staged at Moore Park in Sydney on May 31, 1890. Teams from the Australasian colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand competed in the first meeting. A New Zealand team continued to compete in this event until the 1927/28 event. At the next championships in 1929/30, women's events were included for the first time. In 1933, the women began conducting their own championships, with a wider range of events. Except for occasional combined championships in 1936, 1972 and 1976, the separation of men's and women's championships continued until the 1977/78 event. The full range of Olympic events is not usually conducted at the National Championships. During the 2007/08 season the following championship events were held separately: The most successful athletes at the Championships have been throwers Gael Martin and Warwick Selvey who won 20 and 19 championships events...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15180688 ... From the author: This study analyzes visual production techniques in NBC's 2004 Olympic track and field coverage using Zettl's applied media aesthetics approach. Track and field coverage is worthy of analysis in relation to gender because of the sport's perception as "gender-neutral" in comparison to other sports such as gymnastics (feminine), or U.S. football (masculine). Men's coverage was presented as more visually "exciting" than women's--it used more shot types, camera angles, and motion special effects per minute. These differences may contribute to perceptions that women's sports are inferior or "naturally" less interesting than men's, reinforcing men as the symbolic authority in sport.

1-0 out of 5 stars If the author is this wrong about Hitler.....
... then do I trust she does justice to the life of Jesse Owens?
On pg 24-25 the author statesthe German Olympic team was "all white and all Christian." Hitler "hated others because they were not Christian." Realizing that a children's book can't explain the intricacies of Naziism, it still shouldn't attempt to make Hitler's war into a "Christians-bad-guys" kind of juvenile story. The truth is, Hitler was no spokesman for Christianity, and many of the people he persecuted (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Corrie ten Boom, Maximillian Kolbe) were far better examples of Christian charity than Hitler. Why let a child read a book that leaves a distaste for Christianity in his mouth, as well as obscuring the truth in an effort to simplify the horrible story of Hitler for children. The truth is, Hitler was no friend of Christianity and, like many politicians, paid lip service to Jesus when it furthered his political goals. Why can't the book just say Hitler thought the Germans were a superior race and admired their pagan past, hoping to recreate it in the third reich?

Hooray for Jesse Owens, but boo to Gabi Mezger whose book's stereotypes Christians. ... Read more
