Product Description

The revolutionary political upheavals in Africa in the early 1990s continue to have an impact almost two decades later.  Drawing on original interviews, this book argues we must look to the defining period of transition, and the workings of the transition governments, to understand how politics in these countries changed since the fall of dictatorial one-party states.  Transition governments leave legacies with respect to the relevant political players and their strategies, the institutions of government, and the nature of the political agenda.  These legacies are apparent in Benin, which successfully transitioned to democracy, as well as Togo, which failed to democratize.

Read more

Excerpt: The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. Lions live for ten to fourteen years in the wild, while in captivity they can live longer than twenty years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest. Lions are unusually social compared to other cats. Description:
The relationship between the phenomenon of violence in families and the different kinds of children maltreatment is very well-known. Nevertheless, the direct and sometimes the indirect consequences, in the middle or long-term, on children seem to be unknown. The objectives of this text were to determine the nature of specific violence based on sex in Lome and to have a critical analysis of opinions and perceptions of people on this phenomenon, through interviews and discussions in the focus groups. A contrast was noticed between the knowledge of the phenomenon of domestic violence by the public in general and its persistence in all the social groups. Sensibilisation of the professionals and researchers in the domain is very necessary in order to plan preventive actions. ... Read more

Description:
The objectives have been to analyse the perception of the educational norms by head of families and to determine the prevalence of the child maltreatment in Togo. It was a transversal study in 12 health districts selected at random. The parameters of study have been the socio-demographic data got from the people questioned, the nature of violence and their consequences. All the punishment has been considered by the head of families as good ways to educate children. But 92% consider there is still maltreatment if the punishment has lead to serious immediate consequences. Seventy-five percent of children were maltreated in the 12 passed months. All have been beaten, while 22% concerned by child labour, 2,2% by early marriage, 67% by parents carelessness, and 4,9% of the girls by sexual abuse. Ignorance of the head of families, the tradition and numerous families has been the main associated factors. An emphasis on the sensitisation of the population is very necessary, the same as the training of childhood professionals and the staff of the institutions that are in charge of the violence. ... Product Description

The relationship between human beings and their gods lies at the centre of all questions of identity, individual and collective. Nadia Lovell examines how religious feelings reflect notions of personhood and belonging, and how religious involvement can transform gender relations, by focusing on cults of Vodhun (voodoo) possession among the Watchi in Southern Togo. Using this detailed ethnographic study as a point of departure she offers a fascinating insight into the complex interplay between religion, gender, ethnography and globalisation.Lovell argues that the relationship of men and women to the Vodhun is one of mutual dependency: on the one hand human beings will gods to exist; on the other hand, gods embody themselves in human beings, especially women, through possession. Possession, according to Lovell, implies not only affliction, but the manifestation of creative potential through which women can express multiple identities -- a process through which concepts of gender are both confirmed and dismantled. Looking in particular at the role of the devotees, Lovell presents an enticing account which offers an important contribution to the study of religion, gender and society.

Product Description
Contrary to conventional wisdom on democratic transition in Africa, civil society alone does not trigger democratization on the continent. "Determinants of Democratization in Africa" fills an important theoretical gap, by shedding light on the key variables to democratic transitions in Africa. Mathurin C. Houngnikpo demonstrates that democratic renewal in Africa depends more on the Military, incumbent leaders' willingness for change, and foreign influence. Houngnikpo shows, through a study of Benin and Togo, that civil society is necessary but not sufficient for democratization on the continent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative look at democracy in Africa
This is the best book I have read on democratization in a very long time. The author argues persuasively that those interested in democracy should engage, rather than alienate, the military governments that they seek to replace. He supports this thesis with detailed and compelling case studies. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in democratization. ... Book Review

Many people merely dream of traveling around the world. This highly unusual man acts on his dreams. Every time he starts to wonder about an interesting place he has not been, he simply packs his bags, grabs a camera and goes to the airport to claim his seat. Soon he is in Brazil, China, Africa or anywhere there are people to meet, things to see and do, like taking pictures, buying art, shaking hands, asking questions and being entertained by professional guides and story tellers. "Hello, how are you, good to meet you. I'm Leon Freeman from Memphis, Tennessee." I found his introduction by a tribesman in Papua New Guinea as a cousin the most striking story of them all.

Mr. Freeman retired from his school teaching career and immediately set out to explore the world. Over the years he visited five continents, sixty-two countries and a string of islands ringing the globe like pearls. He discovered one satisfying fundamental fact: in human essence, we are all one. Whatever differences there might be in our outer physical appearance or our diverse cultural extensions, there are no qualitative differences to the principle: 'all human babies are created equal.'

In this picture book, Mr. Freeman provides the viewer with unforgettable, vicarious experiences to enjoy time and time again for many years to come.
