5-0 out of 5 stars More convergence please - I want my IPTV!
IPTV and Internet Video explains what is happening today in the converging world of TV, Internet and communications. It turns out IPTV is really the ability to deliver programming using the IP over a private network rather than the public Internet. And those private networks are the cable, DSL and satellite networks constructed by the large companies providing these services today.

If you are like me you look forward to the day when you can interact with your TV instead of just sitting there and passively watching it. Tivo and other brands of DVRs are a start. They let you record programs and watch them when you want to, and of course you can skip the commercials. I even skip the lulls and often lame commentary between baseball pitches and football plays.

But when will we be able to watch a show and look up other information on the Internet related to what we are watching? What is that batter's average again? What other movie was this actor in? Where can I blog about that news item?

Today I can do that with a laptop while watching TV but I have to type everything in to do a search. That's not the integrated environment that is possible if I could interact with the TV program directly on my computer or computer-based TV. IPTV is what I want!

Or is it?

The book covers the differences between IPTV programming, delivered over a private network and viewed on a TV through a set-top box, and Internet Video which is usually small clips delivered on-demand through the public Internet.

The authors do an excellent job of explaining the technical and business reasons for what is happening now and in the near future of IPTV. Technical details including the various MPEG standards, multicasting and network layer reference model are discussed in this context.Business aspects are also discussed and include business models, subscription costs and "Corner Office View" sidebars that quote industry leaders on the impact of IPTV and Internet video developments.

This is an excellent book if you are in the business and want an overview of IPTV with a good balance of technical and business detail.I rate the book at 5 stars in this case. If you want a description of the gory details of UDP vs. TCP and how multicasting on IP works then this book probably doesn't have enough of those details for you.

You will also have to look elsewhere if you want to know what the next Web 2.0 or YouTube-like video craze will be. OTOH, you might just detect an opportunity not adequately addressed by the IPTV services offered by the powers-that-be and soon-to-be that are discussed in this book.

Product Description
A compelling biography of a pioneering woman in broadcasting; an edifying companion to radio and TV broadcast history.

In 1929 The Goldbergs debuted on the air, introducing Gertrude Berg--and her radio alter ego, Bronx housewife Molly Goldberg--to the nation. The show would become one of the most beloved and enduring programs of Golden Age radio and of early TV. At the helm was Berg who, as creator, star, writer, and producer, became a force to be reckoned with. This multifaceted biography provides a penetrating look at how Gertrude Berg carved a special place for herself in the annals of broadcast history. Decades before Lucille Ball, Berg triumphed as a woman of commercial and creative consequence in what was essentially a male-dominated arena.

For over three decades, Berg's "Molly" fluttered about and hung out her kitchen window dispensing motherly advice laced with engaging malapropisms, insights, and lots of "schmaltz." The show offered a warmly comedic look at the lives and dreams of working-class American Jews and subtle insights into the nature of assimilation. While Molly, husband Jake, and Uncle David represent Old World Jewish stereotypes, children Rosalie and Sammy are as American as apple pie. A sentimental portrait of the immigrant experience, The Goldbergs offered a mythic ideal of the American dream.

Drawing on Gertrude Berg's papers at Syracuse University's Bird Library and rare interviews with her family and colleagues, the author reveals her as shrewd, creative, and forthright. Unlike "Molly," Berg was a cultivated woman and a Columbia graduate. A pioneer in the concept of product tie-in, she parlayed the show's popularity into a movie, short stories, and even a cookbook. In 1951 she stood up to the blacklist by refusing to fire longtime co-star Philip Loeb who was under investigation by the House Un-American Activities Committee. The book also chronicles Berg's accomplishments in theater, film, and literature. ... Read more

Product Description
The aftermath of Japan's 1945 military defeat left its public institutions in a state of deep crisis; virtually every major source of state legitimacy was seriously damaged or wholly remade by the postwar occupation. Between 1960 and 1990, however, these institutions renewed their strength, taking on legitimacy that erased virtually all traces of their postwar instability.

How did this transformation come about? This is the question Ellis S. Krauss ponders in Broadcasting Politics in Japan; his answer focuses on the role played by the Japanese mass media and in particular by Japan's national broadcaster, NHK.

Since the 1960s, television has been a fixture of the Japanese household, and NHK's TV news has until very recently been the dominant, and most trusted, source of political information for the Japanese citizen. NHK's news style is distinctive among the broadcasting systems of industrialized countries; it emphasizes facts over interpretation and gives unusual priority to coverage of the national bureaucracy. Krauss argues that this approach is not simply a reflection of Japanese culture, but a result of the organization and processes of NHK and their relationship with the state. These factors had profound consequences for the state's postwar re-legitimization, while the commercial networks' recent challenge to NHK has helped engender the wave of cynicism currently faced by the state.

Krauss guides the reader through the complex interactions among politics, media organizations, and Japanese journalism to demonstrate how NHK television news became a shaper of Japan's political world, rather than simply a lens through which to view it. ... Read more

Product Description

Radio and Television Broadcasting on the European Continent was first published in

1967. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.

In this book Dr. Paulu provides a comprehensive survey based on firsthand study of the development and current status of radio and television broadcasting in continental Europe. He discusses the technical, organizational, financial, and programming aspects of European broadcasting in both Communist and Western countries. The material is organized, not on a country-by-country basis, but as it relates to broad basic issues, and it is presented in a framework of such interrelated factors as geography, history politics, international relations, religious traditions, language, national economic standards, and cultural and social life. The broadcasting systems studied include those of the Soviet Union and other Communist countries, France, West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The account is particularly timely in view of the concern and discussion about the future course of broadcasting in the United States. It has relevance not only for communications specialists but for political scientists and other scholars in the social sciences as well as for the growing public which is interested in the improvement of American broadcasting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contribution to Media Literacy
Semiotics is the scientific study of signs. In reading television, one must consider such factors as manifest and latent meanings, source, intended audiences, sponsorship, scheduling, genre, cast, plot, technical aspects, and myriad other variables that all have a bearing on the way a given program will potentially be interpreted by viewers. Reading television is complex. This book provides the terms and the overview of attributing meaning to television content.

One should not feel overwhelmed in attempting to understand television, however, as life itself has its own complexities. "Reality is itself a complex system of signs interpreted by members of the culture in exactly the same way as are film or television programmes," the authors write. This book helps you to gain an understanding you would not otherwise have of a ubiquitous medium. ... Read more

I find the author to be very helpful and informative.I watch a lot of tv and I know what people like, and I agree with his advise and honesty.Glad to know the old values and new ideas can make a tv show work for everyone.I do hope to either write a show someday, or just know it may take place in the future. The shows on tv now are just awful, and this book explains why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing Knowledge
This book was purported to be an overall guide on how to write for the TV industry. What to expect on the inside and how to get there. It was exactly that from the writer's perspective. He wrote a spec script with a couple of friends it was chosen from the stack and he was a TV writer from then on.

He explains who to curtsy to, who to fear, and who to shrug off and when.Hints at how to make friends and how to get the job done right all make for a well-rounded, excellently plotted and planned book.

Product Description

In an age of proliferating choices, television nevertheless remains the most popular medium in the United States. Americans spend more time with TV than ever before, and many 'new media' forms, such as blu-ray movies, Hulu videos, and Internet widgets, are produced and delivered by the world’s most lucrative and powerful television industry. Yet that industry has undergone profound changes since the 1980s, moving from a three-network oligopoly to a sprawling range of channels and services dominated by a handful of major conglomerates. Viewers can now access hundreds of channels at all hours of the day and can search and select from hundreds of thousands of individual programmes on video and Internet services. This diversity has fragmented the size of television audiences and transformed relationships between viewers and television companies. Unlike the first fifty years of television, today's industry leaders can no longer rely on mass audiences and steady revenue flows from big-budget advertisers, and this in turn affects their programming and production strategies.

The American Television Industry offers a concise and accessible introduction to TV production, programming, advertising and distribution. Michael Curtin and Jane Shattuc outline how programmes are made and marketed, and provide an insightful overview of key players, practices and future trends. Although star-driven dramas and comedies continue to attract a great deal of critical praise and audience attention, television is increasingly characterised by niche programming services, that, with modest production budgets, compete for audience attention. In this environment, reality TV genres have emerged as attractive programming alternatives for cable services such as the History Channel and the Food Network. Moreover, programming is increasingly delivered on an a la carte, on-demand basis to a diverse array of viewing devices, such as iPods and cell phones.

The book analyses the corporate strategies, technological innovations and cultural transformations that have driven changes in industry strategy, discourse and practice. Making reference to numerous case examples, the authors identify definitive trends and describe key players in industry and government. These are indeed vibrant but unstable times for the American television industry and this volume explains the major forces that will shape the future of the medium in North America and around the world.

Product Description
"Everybody knows that TV is crucial to globalization. Now, thanks to Lisa Parks and Shanti Kumar, we know why and how television matters globally. With TV studies moving out of the classroom and onto the world stage, this volume will be an indispensable passport."—Toby Miller

From the 1967 live satellite program "Our World" to MTV music videos in Indonesia, from French television in Senegal to the global syndication of African American sitcoms, and from representations of terrorism on German television to the international Teletubbies phenomenon, TV lies at the nexus of globalization and transnational culture.

Planet TV provides an overview of the rapidly changing landscape of global television, combining previously published essays by pioneers of the study of television with new work by cutting-edge television scholars who refine and extend intellectual debates in the field. Organized thematically, the volume explores such issues as cultural imperialism, nationalism, postcolonialism, transnationalism, ethnicity and cultural hybridity. These themes are illuminated by concrete examples and case studies derived from empirical work on global television industries, programs, and audiences in diverse social, historical, and cultural contexts.

Developing a new critical framework for exploring the political, economic, sociological and technological dimensions of television cultures, and countering the assumption that global television is merely a result of the current dominance of the West in world affairs, Planet TV demonstrates that the global dimensions of television were imagined into existence very early on in its contentious history.Parks and Kumar have assembled the critical moments in television's past in order to understand its present and future.

Product Description

Daytime soap operas. Evening news. Late-night talk shows. Television has long been defined by its daily schedule, and the viewing habits that develop around it. Technologies like DVRs, iPods, and online video have freed audiences from rigid time constraints—we no longer have to wait for a program to be "on" to watch it—but scheduling still plays a major role in the production of television.

Prime-time series programming between 8:00 and 11:00 p.m. has dominated most critical discussion about television since its beginnings, but Beyond Prime Time brings together leading television scholars to explore how shifts in television’s industrial practices and new media convergence have affected the other 80% of the viewing day. The contributors explore a broad range of non-prime-time forms including talk shows, soap operas, news, syndication, and children’s programs, non-series forms such as sports and made-for-television movies, as well as entities such as local affiliate stations and public television.

Importantly, all of these forms rely on norms of production, financing, and viewer habits that distinguish them from the practices common among prime-time series and often from each other. Each of the chapters examines how the production practices and textual strategies of a particular programming form have shifted in response to sweeping industry changes, together telling the story of a medium in transition at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2008

After occupying a central space in American living rooms for the past fifty years, is television, as we've known it, dead? The capabilities and features of that simple box have been so radically redefined that it's now nearly unrecognizable. Today, viewers with digital video recorders such as TiVo may elect to circumvent scheduling constraints and commercials. Owners of iPods and other portable viewing devices are able to download the latest episodes of their favorite shows and watch them whenever and wherever they want. Still others rent television shows on DVD, or download them through legal and illegal sources online. But these changes have not been hastening the demise of the medium. They are revolutionizing it.

The Television Will Be Revolutionized examines television at the turn of the twenty-first century — what Amanda D. Lotz terms the "post-network" era. Television, both as a technology and a tool for cultural storytelling, remains as important today as ever, but it has changed in fundamental ways as the result of technological innovations, proliferating cable channels targeting ever more specific niche audiences, and evolving forms of advertising such as product placement and branded entertainment. Many of the conventional practices and even the industry's basic business model are proving unworkable in this new context, resulting in a crisis in norms and practices.

Through interviews with those working in the industry, attendance of various industry summits and meetings, surveys of trade publications, and consideration of an extensive array of popular television shows, Lotz takes us behind the screen to explore what is changing, why it's changing, and why these changes matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic aid for the classroom, and intelligent read about the current state of television.
The amazing thing here is that it remains current although the media are changing rapidly. I have since become interested in Lotz's other works and they are equally intelligent, well written and researched and aid me in my teaching of contemporary media studies courses.
Wether you teach, research or are simply interested in the business facets of television, this book should not be missing on your book shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Defining Book on TV Industry in the 2000s
If Todd Gitlin helped us understand the TV industry in the 1980s, and John Caldwell in the 1990s, Lotz's book is the defining book about the state of the industry in the 2000s.Superbly researched and written. Will be assigned in many a TV Studies classroom. The book is largely focused on prime-time, but Lotz has a follow-up edited collection coming out this summer that looks outside those programming hours. A must-read for anyone wanting to understand the industry amidst such revolutionary changes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
I bought this book to help me with a school project but all I have to say is: If you want a book that pertains to a specific piece of software which was not represented in the description, then go for it!

Seriously, this does not help you plan a film budget, all this book covers is the list of accounts (it describes the items that would be expensed under these accounts) that a certain piece of software used to help budget a production has, I can't remember the name of the product, but trust me, this book isn't worth it!

Koster, The Budget Book For Film And Television is a step-by-step walkthrough of how to create and fine-tune film and television budgets. 4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Information on the Field of Sports Journalism
Brad Schultz has done a commendable job on providing direction for people seeking a career in sports journalism. This book is thorough in covering the material. The opening chapters include background on the history of broadcasting itself, while later sections focus more on the theme of the book, sports broadcasting. It concludes with profiles of successful sports journalists who created the paradigm in place today, and the very last chapter takes a look at the future through the eyes of the commissioners of the professional sports leagues.

Schultz's writing style is easy to follow. In fact, he practices what he advocates, i.e., basic writing skills come from effective readers. You can tell from his work that he is well-read. He includes the international, national, and local career options in his discussion. Historically he lists what he considers to be milestones in the development of the profession in the United States. I highly recommend this book. It is well-researched and comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
This is a very interesting title. Easy to read and to comprehend some business aspects.

Some parts of the book were not updated properly, e.g., the overview of Television in South America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good guide for industry knowledge
I work in TV. I own a copy of this book and bought another for a new employee so she could come up to speed on the industry. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Television Book Ever
When I was in film school there was a lot of film history and film theory, and no one talked about television often enough for us to learn anything worth while about it. I now work as a television director, and it was this book that taught me the "business" aspects of the industry. Without this book I would probably be out of work or directing the local news someplace like Lima, Ohio.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This book (textbook) is an excellent resource for just about everything in TV. The disk included is a great utility to have for printing out your own contracts. I only with this book could be updated, say, every two years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!
This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.

Product Description
Milwaukee -not New York, Chicago or Los Angeles-
was the scene of a number of television firsts: Here the very first application for a commercial TV license was filed with the FCC in 1938. The first female program director and news director in a major
market were both at Milwaukee stations. Milwaukee was a major battleground in the VHF vs. UHF war that began in the 1950s. The struggle to put an educational TV station on the air was fought at the national, state and local levels by the Milwaukee Vocational School. WMVS-TV was the first educational TV station to run a regular schedule of colorcasts, and WMVT was the site of the first long-distance test of a digital over-the-air signal.

This detailed story of the rich history of the citys
television stations since 1930 is told through facts, anecdotes, and quotations from the on-air talent, engineers, and managers who conceived, constructed, and put the stations on the air. Included are discussions of the many locally-produced shows often done live that once made up a large part of a station s broadcast day. Through these stories, some told here for the first time, and the books extensive photographic collection of over 470 images, the history of Milwaukee television comes alive again for the reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and core addition to both academic and community library collections
What is not generally known is that Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was the first applicant to receive a commercial broadcast television license from the Federal Communications Commission in 1938. It was Milwaukee television that had the first female program direct and the firms female news director in a major television market. Milwaukee was also the city in which the VHF vs UHF controversy broke out in the 1950s. Milwaukee was also a pivotal site for the development of an educational TV station (WMVS-TV) and the first to regularly telecast in color. It was Milwaukee's own WMVT that was chosen as the site of the first long-distance test of a digital over-the-air signal in a technological evolution that was to ultimate replace analog television with digital television throughout the country. "Milwaukee Television History: The Analog Years" is a profusely illustrated 510-page compendium that showcases the complete and definitive history of Milwaukee's contributions to the television industry and culture. Of special note is the chapter dedicated to 'Low-Power, Class-A and Translator Stations'. Enhanced with a profusion of anecdotal stories and quotations from on-air talent, engineers, and station managers, "Milwaukee Television History: The Analog Years" is a unique and core addition to both academic and community library collections, as well as a recommended reading for anyone with an interest in Milwaukee history in general, and the history of American television broadcasting in particular.

One of the best books on television...ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great achievement in a life cut short
Dick's book is a real treat for anybody with memories of Milwaukee TV over the years.Sadly, his death on 29 March 2009 means he won't be updating it for "The Digital Years." Thanks to Dick for everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you want to know about television in Milwaukee
If you grew up in the 1950s and you are a native of southeastern Wisconsin, this is a book that you should have on your library shelf or coffee table, your choosing. It is a large book, not just in size, but in scope. Except for a three and a half year sojourn in the United States Navy, I have lived in this region of the world for over seventy years. Golembiewski covers things that I never knew before. I am more of an early radio fan than an early television fan, but many radio personalities segued into television during its infancy. They are all covered in this volume. Golembiewski covers it all, from the first ideas of television up to the conversion to digital. And he does it in such a way so that non-technical people, of which I am a charter member, can understand the points that he is making. If you are into television, until you get this book your library is incomplete. Each chapter of the book covers a television station, starting with the oldest and working his way up to stations that were formed just a few years ago. When reading you can pick and choose chapters, for each chapter is complete. You can start with your favorite station and work towards your least favorite station. You would think a book like this would be dry and boring, but the way that Golembiewski presents the material, it is not. He actually makes you thirst for more. After I finished reading about WTMJ-TV I ran to my computer to see what more I could find on the internet. And, there are pictures, lots and lots of pictures. This is a book that is of particular interest to people from the Milwaukee area, but I think it would of interest to anyone who is interested in television.

5-0 out of 5 stars Milwaukee Television History, The Analog Years
