Product Description
Since 1978 China has made remarkable economic progress with the average rate of growth exceeding 9% per year. The National Economic Atlas of China is the most comprehensive and detailed picture of this achievement. It is based on the largest and most far-reaching investigations ever conducted at the national level in China including the Industrial Census of 1985 and the Third and Fourth Population Censuses of 1982 and 1990. This extensive collection of data is presented in map and text form. The 265 full-color maps and text have been divided into eleven topics: geographical and administrative background; resources; population; general economy; agriculture; industry; communications; building, urban construction, and environmental protection; commerce, foreign trade, tourism and finance; education, scientific research, culture, sports, and health; and the regional comprehensive economy of each of China's provinces and major cities. The maps illustrate over 500 socioeconomic indicators at the country and city level, revealing the quantitative and qualitative aspects of China's socioeconomic growth. The text supplements and complements the maps by providing a description and analysis of each major topic, incorporating developments through 1990. This atlas offers the clearest and most comprehensive graphic picture of China ever, and makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the vast economic and social changes that have taken place. ... Product Description
"No [other] book provides such a thorough and enjoyable history of the United States-Mexico boundary, which plays a significant role in peoples' lives every day."--Robert J. Czerniak, Professor and Chair of Geography, New Mexico State UniversityThe Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo, which officially ended the U.S.-Mexican War in 1848, cost Mexico half its territory, while the United States gained land that became California, Nevada, Utah, Texas, and parts of Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. Because the new United States-Mexico border ran through territory that was still incompletely mapped, the treaty also called for government commissions from both nations to locate and mark the boundary on the ground. This book documents the accomplishments of both the U.S. and the Mexican Boundary Commissions that mapped the boundary between 1849 and 1857, as well as the fifty-four pairs of maps produced by their efforts and the ongoing importance of these historical maps in current boundary administration. Paula Rebert explores how, despite the efforts of both commissions to draw neutral, scientific maps, the actual maps that resulted from their efforts reflected the differing goals and outlooks of the two countries. She also traces how the differences between the U.S. and Mexican maps have had important consequences for the history of the boundary. ... Read more

Product Description
Hardbound. The last decade of the twentieth century is seeing a marked increase in the number of programmes of Earth observation from space. This expansion reflects a growing concern for monitoring development and managing natural resources, taking into account environmental priorities, and is responding to the needs of scientific researchers in understanding the mechanisms and evolution from global change.

It is envisaged that in future the bulk of geographical data at both global and national scales will be derived from Earth observation from space. The conversion of this data into information which is portrayed in cartographic form is of key importance.

This guide book is the result of a major international co-operative effort of specialists from many nations and its purpose is to draw on practical application experience to formulate general rules for cartographic production from satellite imagery. The book is bilingual in English and French. ... Read more

17. Engineering Geological Mapping (Butterworths Advanced Series in Geotechnical Engineering)

list price: US$245.00
Isbn: 0750610107

Editorial Review

Product Description
Engineering and environmental geology mapping is concerned with representing the uppermost few tens of metres, exceptionally more, of the diverse rocks and soils comprising the Earth's surface in a manner that can be easily understood by geologists and non-geological specialists, such as planners. Ease of interpretation of three-dimensional reality from a two-dimensional map or plan is paramount if the maps are to be used to best advantage. Having established the basic principles of engineering geological mapping, guidance is given on how to make such maps and what to put on them. Two aspects are of particular importance. One is the description of earth materials in terms that convey likely engineering properties and behaviour; national and international standards have been developed for this purpose. The other is aiding or simplifying the interpretation of the map; the stripe method and the more general zoning method departing from the conventional geological approach to mapping, show how this can be done. The principles are illustrated by examples at small scale, terrain evaluation at medium scales, and urban geology and construction sites at the largest scales.Environmental aspects include hazard and risk assessment, and land and water management. Computer aided mapping provides and exciting prospect for the future. ... Read more

Product Description
The recent emergence and widespread use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) has prompted new interest in scale as a key component of these and other geographic information technologies. Techniques for dealing explicitly with scale are now available in GIS, but, until now, very little literature was available to consider and solve specific issues of scale. With a balanced mixture of concepts, practical examples, techniques, and theory, Scale in Remote Sensing and GIS is a guide for students and users of remote sensing and GIS who must deal with the issues raised by multiple temporal and spatial scales. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for remote sensing and GIS specialists.
First, I'm pretty picky about which book I buy. Second, I think GIS should be more than just pretty pictures. So my endorsement of this book was not given lightly. I would recommend the book to all remote sensing and GIS professionals, as well as ecologists and ecological modellers ... Read more
