4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Uplifting
We all have our good days and bad days, and this book is a great one to lift your spirits. It is a book full of 101 stories all told by people who experienced a miracle, see the good side of something/someone, count your blessings, or just realized that the glass was really half full.I found that whenever I am having a bad day, I just read one of the 2-3 page stories and I feel better.I would recommend this book to anyone because we could all use a good uplifting story every now and then! The stories are told by people of different races, gender, ages, and stages of life, so there is something for everyone to relate to.I would not consider this a total "Self Help" book, but it is in the realm of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for hard time!!
This book comes at a much needed time. When our economy is in bad shape, natural disasters are everywhere, and the negative outweighs the positive every time we turn on the television, computer, or radio.

These stories truly show people who have been given "lemons" and made "lemonade".The book has blessed me, and I have given several as gifts, which have in turn blessed friends and family.

These stories are gems of faith, and can help anyone feel better when going through a rough time.

The writers are gifted, and share much needed uplifting stories. This book is a must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment from Deborah Norville
(I know, it's a funny "Amazon" name - 'Knit Girl' )Far be in from me to submit a "review" for a book for which I have contributed the foreward, but I wanted to share a note I received via email from a lady who is exactly the reason a book like "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Positive" was created.I wont reveal her name, but here is her message in its entirety.

Dear Deborah,
I woke up this morning and could not get past my sadness.I cried all morning and then I remembered seeing you on GMA on Friday with the new book Think Positive. My life has been beyond overwhelming these days with a health issue with my Dad.I find myself turning to all the negative things in my life rather than reveling in all the reasons I have to be grateful.I hae (sic) read a few stories and I am hoping I can find the positive in my life everyday.I will try to turn to this book often. When the book needs me or when I need the book.

I have followed you over the years from one of the first times you filled in on the Today show.I loved the foreword in the book and I am hoping to take these words and "Change my thoughts so I can change the world"At least turn my own ship into a more positive direction.Thank you.I am hoping this will be the turning point in my life.

My best,

XXXXXXXXXX

How great that in the middle of her turmoil, this lady found some words of hope, wisdom, and a sense that she's not alone in her struggle.None of us are -- though at times, we may all feel quite alone. And indeed BE alone. But the short vignettes in Think Positive are meant to put you in a ever so slightly brighter mindset -- which then makes it easier to conjure up those positive thoughts, great ideas, superb strategies to get us through our troubles. We all have troubles -- but we all have blessings too. This book aims to help you remember THOSE.I hope it helps you -- and I hope that you let me hear from you too!You can email me here:[...](copy and paste into your browser.)

Here's to brighter days!Deborah

5-0 out of 5 stars No to Nay-sayers and Hooray to Yay-sayers!
We've been drowning in doom and gloom long enough. Now that Thanksgiving nears, it's time to reframe our attitudes. Since I received my contributor's copy, this latest Chicken Soup bookhelps me start each morning looking on the bright side. Deborah Norville quotes Norman Vincent Peale in her introduction, "Change your thoughts and you change your world." I believe it.
My story, "From Nuisance to Blessing" relates how I started to look at my late husband's scruffy mutt with new eyes when I realized that I wasn't the only one who missed Ken. Taking twenty minutes a day, Natty and I now have a little quality time together strolling the Loop...and I've lost fifteen pounds since the end of March. That's not easy at my age, and I have this dog to thank for it. Jeannie Lancaster's tale is a treasure. You can't possibly read "Dancing in the Rain" and remain surly! And for a good giggle, catch Annmarie B. Tait's treasure, "Living in Barbie's Dream House." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I have made many of these recipes and love so many of them
I bought this book a few years ago and use it all.the.time.I try to make a soup once a week and 90% of the recipes I use come from this book.I have made 15-20 of the recipes and love most of them.My favorites are the Cauliflower, Cheese and Potato, Sausage Minestrone with Orzo, Spicy Chickpea and Butternut Squash, Spinach, Feta and Toasted Pine Nut.But there are lots more I like.I have made a few that I haven't liked, specifically the cold soups, but there are so many good recipes that make me forget the ones I didn't like.I love how the book is organized by seasons, it makes it easy to find recipes based on the veggis I get in my CSA.I do wish there was a table of contents of all the recipes though.I admit that I rarely use homemade stock and they still come out delicious.Pair the soups in this book with the boule recipe from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking and you are in heaven. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST soup cookbook
Thisis the best soup cookbook I have ever used.I've made about 20 of the soups, and every single one of them is simple and delicious. The ingredient list isn't too long and the directions are easy to follow.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Soup Cookbook
I purchased this cookbook after visiting the Soup Factory Restaurant in the Boston area where, according to a recent email, Marjorie Druker is still in the kitchen. I loved their selection of soup and was inspired by the purity of ingredients and variety of flavors.
While some cookbooks I've come upon recently seem to be but modificatons of previous recipes, adding new flavorings which make the dish different without really enhancing it, Druker's cookbook stands apart. In addition to creating entirely new soup flavors ( for example, spinach, feta cheese and toasted pine nut soup), she dramatically enhances the more traditional dishes such as vegetarian chilli, New England Clam Chowder and Alphabet Soup.
The many photographs allow the reader to preview the results and get ideas for accompaniments.
There are some wonderful sandwich and salad recipes too.
All ingredients are readily accessible. While there is an emphasis upon choosing fresh vegetables, Druker is also practical in suggesting frozen peas and other short-cuts.
There are many choices suited for vegetarians and vegans.
I'd judge most of the recipes to be relatively low in fat and calories. There is, however no nutritional information which might be an enhancement with another edition of the book. I'd also like to see a few paragraphs of modification/suggestion for preparing the soups in a crock pot.
Most of the recipes are arranged according to season. My favorites, so far, are the autumn ones, but this is where I've begun.
I expect this cookbook to remain on my shelf for many years-- without a speck of dust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal, great service!
After borrowing this book from a co-worker I knew a few photocopied pages wouldn't satisfy me.When I found this copy for sale I was thrilled! The seller shipped it the same day it was purchased and it arrived 2 days later. The book is in exactly the condition described - perhaps better!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed impressions....
I tried two recipes so far and have 2 opposite experiences. While my family and I loved the Italian vegetable soup, with some little changes (no basil: we used ground cumin and coriander with some other spices instead, and no vinegar, because the soup was already borderline tangy from all the tomatoes and vinegar would make it too sour in my opinion). We had a bad experience with the new englad clam chowder: followed instructions and times very closely, as the result clams disappeared from being overcooked, no thickening agent present in the recipe and tarragon just makes it taste weird. I love tarragon, but in my opinion it just doesn't belong in the clam chowder. Overall the soup tasted very blah! It became edible after I thickened it with some flour. I felt bad about spending almost $50 on a pot of soup that I didn't like at all, given that I love new england clam chowder a lot. I want to try couple of more recipes, but so far this is what my experience was. ... Read more

Product Description

Three soldiers came marching down the road towards a French village. The peasants seeing them coming, suddenly became very busy, for soldiers are often hungry. So all the food was hidden under mattresses or in barns. There followed a battle of wits, with the soldiers equal to the occasion. Stone soup? Why, of course, they could make a wonderful soup of stones...but, of course, one must add a carrot or tow...some meat...so it went.

Marcia Brown has made of this old tale a very gay book, a carnival of activity, of dancing and laughter. So much goes on in the pictures that children who have once heard the story will turn to them again and again, retelling the story for themselves.

A French version of the story is available under the title Une Drôle de Soupe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stone Soup - Used Book
Book arrived in Like New Condition - Important as it was a gift. Great Price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classics are best in some cases!
I have burned through three different editions of Stone Soup, not liking each one (one had ugly weird illustrations, one was too sappy and rhyming, one was too modern and snotty) until I decided to try out the classic, Caldecott Honor version.

WHAT a change. THESE are the classic illustrations most of us grew up with. THESE are the soldiers and the peasants we read about. THIS is the story I'm keeping for my nieces. The telling isn't too clever, or too silly, or too watered-down, or too grown-up. The illustrations are neither too slick or too consciously old-fashioned. (Sheesh, I feel like I'm reviewing Goldilocks here!) I love it, love it, love it!

Please remember that this is a bit of a lengthy book for the smaller kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Many Lessons in One Book
I bought this book because it was recommended as a leadership book, but it has so much more to it. I won't go into detail here, but believe me, it's got some good lessons in it. I recommend you read it more than once at a sitting, put it down, and pick it up later on that day and read it a few more times. Things will come out clearer the more you read it. -=80)

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Goodness
This book is great. I remember my mom reading it to me when I was very young. Now I get to read it to my kids.

The story contains some good lessons about human nature. A great kids story that works just as well for adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Share What You Have
A very simple story with a very profound message. Standing the test of time, this book is truly a timeless classic. If you want to teach life lessons, this book is just a wonderful way to do it, when is comes to sharing what you have. Stone Soup is great to read early and often to your toddlers. After awhile, the message will sink in and stick. The soldiers certainly were cunning, but they also believed in the the inherent goodness in all people to do the right thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic -But get a BIG soup pot
I purchased this cookbook based on a review I read on a diet site. I thought it would be a good option for low calorie food and a good way to eat our daily veggies. Now, I am really enjoying all the different varieties of soup. Before this book, I had never made a homemade soup. It's actually really fun, very forgiving, and great for busy schedules. Beware, the recipes feed an army, and you may want to invest in the larger soup pot recommended in the introduction.I haven't bought one yet, so it's not required, but every time I make soup I remember the recommendation. Another great feature in the book is the weight of many ingredients is listed in different units. This is really helpful, but unfortunately, some of the ingredients can be difficult to find in the sizes listed. For example, the author mentions a 1 pound cabbage in a few recipes.I have yet to find one in our local grocery or foodie store less than 2 pounds. This leaves me with the options of doubling the recipe, including the extra cabbage, or making something else with the left over vegetable.I find the soup is very forgiving as the author suggests, a little over or under or substituted is really no problem. In general, I make a large pot of soup for Sunday, and then freeze the remaining as individual servings and it works well.My husband's favorite so far is the sweet potato, ginger, carrot soup, but mine are any one of the beat soups. YUMMY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read
I bought this to read and it is just that - fun to read.I have not tried any of the recipes and would have liked some pictures (there are none). But it is very well-written and I will likely incorporate some of the ideas into my kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome !!
Anna Thomas is a fantastic writer. You must read all the intro first before you so into the recipies. She is so inspiring. She makes you feel like you want to cook for the world in a great healthy way. I love soup, but other recipies always have cans of soup in them. Add this can of soup with this other can of soup. I love the fact that I can cook with fresh foods. And its a healthier for my family. And delicious!!! Thank you for inspiring us to be eating healthier and living healthier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy recipes
Bought a copy for my daugher and she's raved about the 6+ recipes she's made so far. Had to order my own copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to cook for health, taste, joy
I think of Anna Thomas as a bit of a missionary, and I say that as someone old enough to know the influence/tidal wave that was "The Vegetarian Epicure."

Once again, she has shown up at just the right moment to teach (and even better, tenderly and lovingly coax us into) food that is good for us, delightful, intelligent, inspirational. I am so glad that "Love Soup" won the prestigious James Beard Award for cookbooks that focus on healthy...I would have voted her best over all, no matter the subject/focus.

This collection of 101 stories is based on the belief thattrue testimonies of goodness and loving transformations can nourish usto the bone and heal the cynicism in our hearts. Indeed, most everystory seeps in deeply. It's hard not to shed a tear of gratitude, feeling thrilled to have been touched and soothed so easily. 4-0 out of 5 stars Stories You Wish Your Parents Told You
As I write this review, I realise how much I miss having grandparents. My grandmother especially took time to tell me stories from far away lands. And I have to agree with my best friend Roland, that books are the nearest thing to listening to an older person telling you a good story. And in the original Chicken Soup for the Soul book I have found master story tellers. Not every story was amazing, some of them appealed to me when they were the story of a father or son, and some even brought me close to tears. As I have gone from bad to worse in my life in the last 2 years I feel the need to read more uplifting stories. As I find myself so close to giving up, I need to replenish the hope in in my life. And more than anything else I need faith. Chicken Soup for the Soul is a book for those who need faith more than anything else.

I Have not yet recieved the book " Chicken... "

5-0 out of 5 stars A major uplifting book!
Those who don't like these types of books have major challenges to overcome.Cynics etc, don't even bother. However, if you want to feed your soul and keep on the path toward a positive life, this is one of the best books - still by far!I've seen, listen, lunched and laughed with MVH, and it was because of the success of the Chicken Soup books. He is a master communicator of uplifting stories - but more than that he inspires you with actual ideas, (not just 'feel good' emotions). That is why he and Jack's books work so well.

What is interesting to me is what they have in common with Horatio Alger, as his books - novels of rags to riches - were very much like the effect one has reading a Chicken Soup book. Not only uplifting, (all Alger's book with uplifting and very powerful in that way), but Alger always explained in his novels HOW a person was successful, (even down to the math), and these were more than principles, but examples that someone could duplicate in a different business and move forward, succeed and prosper.Hansen does the same in his books, and I would recommend you read all the books by all of these authors.

I just found a very nice set of great reprinted Alger books, (I'll leave you with a few). All in all, Hansen, Canfield, Alder, they are all great, inspiring, and what we need to read in this negative, cynical world.

The item was described in good condition, but I was a little disappointed. Although the book was very economical, I thought it was a bit faded and this should have been noted on the description.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
I picked up this book based largely on the fact that it is a #1 NY Times Bestseller and that it has received rave reviews. My impression after reading it is that the book on the whole is not worthy of its stature as one of the bestselling books in the past 2 decades. Some of the stories are good, and some do evoke emotions. But the ultra-short length of the stories makes them seem (again, over all) more superficial than stories of greater length. It's difficult to convey a compelling feeling or thought (which, by their very nature, need some context) in one or two pages. But some of the stories are good and I'd recommend others to pick up this book.Just keep your expectations in check. ... Characteristics of Great Leaders
Content from author Jon Gordon

Challenging times require leaders who can lead others through the challenges. Now more than ever we need great leadership in our government, schools, businesses, hospitals and organizations. Good leadership won’t suffice. We needgreatleadership. There is a difference.

Good leaders get people to believe in them.
Great leaders inspire people to believe in themselves.
Good leaders say “Watch what I can do.”
Great leaders say “Let me show you what you can do.”
Good leaders catch fish for others so they can eat today.
Great leaders teach people how to fish so they can eat for a lifetime.

Having worked with countless leaders over the years in businesses, schools and professional sports I’ve realized that great leadership is really a transfer of belief. Great leaders share their belief, vision, purpose and passion with others and in the process they inspire others to believe, act and impact. Great leaders are positively contagious and they instill confidence and belief in others.

Great sales managers inspire their sales people to believe in themselves and their product/service. Great school principals inspire their teachers to believe they can make a difference. Great teachers inspire and empower their students to believe in themselves. Great pastors inspire their congregations to serve and impact the community. Great sports coaches inspire their teams to believe they can win. And the people who have changed the world have been those who instilled in others the confidence to step up, serve, take initiative and create positive change. You don’t need a title to be a leader. You just need to lead.

To lead others in a powerful way you must invite them on your bus, share your vision for the road ahead and then encourage, empower and inspire them to drive their own bus. In the process, instead of having just one bus that you drive, you create a fleet of buses and bus drivers, all moving in the same positive direction. When you create a fleet of buses and empower people to drive their own bus, you generate an amazing amount of power and momentum that becomes an unstoppable force. This is what great leadership is all about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging read
This is a great book.It is written in an engaging way so you won't want to put it down.It reads quick and has many great hidden lessons in it that you can immediately apply to your own business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stir things up!
SOUP: A Recipe to Nourish Your Team and Culture, by Jon Gordon is written as an allegory. As with most business allegories, the story is a little corny and just a tad beyond the real world, but the message is fantastic.

I'll get the corny part out of the way first. Before anyone follows the example (that I am sure Mr. Gordon simplified for the reader's benefit) please note that if you go in and start eliminating un-engaged workers, you had better check the employment laws in your state or you will facing some serious issues with the EEOC and Soup Worker's Local Union. Also, before you do as suggested and start hugging your employees (and yes, I do hug my employees, both male and female) be mindful of the possibility of sexual harassment charges.

Now for the stuff that makes SOUP well worth reading. If you've read any of Jon Gordon's other books (and if you haven't, you should), you know his writing style is very easy to follow and he has a unique way of putting his points in front of the reader in a relatable fashion so that you can immediately implement his ideas. For example, I thought the "Winning Habits" manifesto presented in this book was such a tremendous idea that I stopped reading mid-page and starting typing one up for my team that I will introduce at next week's meeting.

I don't want to give away too much story here, but the book gives some great insight to building better, stronger relations with your team and some great ideas for inspiring, empowering and coaching your team. The end result will be a much more engaged group of workers.

There's no rocket surgery here. Most of this is what good leaders already know, but Jon Gordon has a very succinct way of reminding us what good leadership and team building is all about. I do recommend this book, as well as Gordon's other books. My personal favorite of his is still the No Complaining Rule, but I rate this one right up there with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the right ingredients!
Jon's delivered yet again - another amazing, insightful, thought-provoking, and applicable book. This book is different than "The Energy Bus", "The No Complaining Rule", "Training Camp", and "The Shark and the Goldfish", but different is good. While I loved reading (and applying the lessons from) each of these books, I found that "Soup" speaks to the core issue with which many organizations struggle - Culture. Often overlooked or considered "soft stuff", culture is what makes or breaks companies, it's what separates the best from the rest and Jon does an exceptional job communicating through an engaging and enlightening parable, the elements which drive functional, positive, corporate cultures. To carry the soup analogy, Jon's put together a recipe for any leader challenged to build strong culture and attract, develop, and retain the best talent. Helping people become the best versions of themselves, both professionally and personally, requires understanding the ingredients of a great Culture - and Jon's latest gem does just that. I couldn't put this book down once I started....I've bought 60 copies and shared it with co-workers, friends, and family members. I can't wait for his next book....

4-0 out of 5 stars Soup is Good Food!
Soup is a business fable that can be digested in about an hour or two. It is the story of a new CEO that is brought in to rescue a failing soup company. She gets advice along the way from the owners of a small family-run restaurant that serves - you guessed it - soup! The author makes the case that the ingredients for a successful family run restaurant are similar to those required to run a large corporation. The key is the love and caring for the people. Relationships are king. Take care of the people and they will take care of the rest - the customers, the profits, etc.

With each chapter the CEO learns a new ingredient and incorporates it into her company. The outcome of the fable is predictable. Within a few months, the new CEO is able to influence positive cultural change which, in turn, propels the business toward growth and prosperity.

The recipe for success is not a new one, but it is rarely followed. Some of the basics include - sharing the vision, matching the purpose of the company to those of the employees, communicating transparently, showing appreciation. Bottom Line: Create a positive culture with an engaged workforce and watch the exceptional results that follow.

If more people followed this hearty recipe rather than ingesting a steady diet of junk food, we'd have many more healthy companies.

Product Description
This edition of Chicken Soup for teenagers contains lessons on the nature of friendship and love, the importance of belief in the future, the value of respect for yourself and others, and other important themes--all delivered with compassion and humor.Amazon.com Review
This book, the latest in the hugely popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series, contains stories, poems, and cartoons relating to the specific troubles that traumatize teenagers everywhere. There are plenty of stories about dating ("HE KISSED MY TEETH!"), friendships (don't gossip), and school. But Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul doesn't shy away from the big issues either, with essays on suicide, dying young, and drunk driving. This book stems from the knowledge that teens know their own concerns best—thus, much of the book is written by teens themselves, which gives the book a very accessible, informal tone. Also, the authors had each piece evaluated by as many teenagers as possible. The care shows. Teenage Soul is always respectful, and doesn't minimize any of the dramas of adolescence. It does, however, mete out plenty of perspective. This wise, tender, funny book is filled with wisdom useful to teens (and everybody else, too). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So good
Again, not enough is written for teenagers that is positive and not too heavy. Because there are many stories, the book can be put down at any time and resumes at some other time when the teenager may be feeling down or just needing a different perspective. Easy to read, but so much heart, so many good stories. They really do make the heart feel good.

The book title was written by Andrew Keegan the title of the book I read is Chicken soup for the teenage soul 2. This book was written for teenagers about situations dealing with problems teenagers have, such as family stuff, making, a difference learning lessons. I recommended this book because it helped me get a better understanding about subjects that I don't normally talk about. Some of the situations have actually helps me in my personal life and I think that it could help you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Insight
I am not a teen anymore, but a decade ago, I was.I never went to a public school, or delt with teenage dating, drugs, suicide, sneaking around, or all of that drama. I purchased this for a special teen in my life who has had to go to public school and face all of that.I read it before I gave it to her, and I think I learned some things that enter into the "average teen's" life.I hope she enjoys it, and learns, laughs and grows as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Read In A Long Time
This book was a wonderful and uplifting read. A lot of the passages will be in the back of my mind for a long time. The stories with love, hope and forgiveness really hit home for me. The only thing that I would like to see more in this book is poetry.

You would like this book if you love the feeling of being thankful of what you have.It makes me think to be kinder to people and to be happy that people are how they are and no one should try to change them. That some people are there to help and some people are there to be helped by people. I just think that this book will make so many people's lives so much brighter after having read it.

The thing that really got me was one of the stories that had a little brother that had cancer and it made me think of my little brother and what would my life be like without him. The day I read that story I went home and gave him a big hug and I told him that I loved him.

The parts with thoughtful words and deep thoughts always make me think. I love to read about people's problems and how they overcome them. I just think that it is good to know that someone might be going through the same problems with boys, parents, school, drugs and tons more things that make your head spin every day, and things that you feel like there is no way out of that situation.

All in all I thought it was a good book.

Product Description
There is no better way to tap into today's soup craze than with this glorious cookbook, filled with more than 100 deliciously low-fat soup recipes. Author Judith Barrett lost pounds and inches using these mouthwatering recipes, each of which contains less than three grams of fat per serving. And cutting the fat posed no bar to creating soups with incredible flavor -- Black Mushroom and Spinach Wonton Soup and Creamy Fennel Soup with Shrimp both contain only one gram of fat.

Barrett offers soups to be savored for every season. In the fall, Creamy Carrot Soup or Roasted Beet Borscht will delight you. Winter Squash Soup with Thyme or Real Gumbo with Okra and Chicken is sure to take the edge off the cold during the snowy months. Come springtime, there is Vidalia Onion Soup or Arugula Vichyssoise, and to beat the summertime heat, make a batch of Cool Cucumber and Yogurt Soup or Creamy Tomato Bisque with Shallots and Tarragon. You have a veritable calendar full of soup's pleasures at your fingertips. Soups "from the sea," like Mediterranean Fish Stew and New York Red Clam Chowder, will leave a briny tingle on your palate. If it's legumes you crave, try one of the unbeatable bean soups: Lentil and Portobello Mushroom Soup, Miami Black Bean Soup, Lemony Chickpea and Escarole Soup. Or experiment with the variety of international soup recipes that are offered, from Japanese Dashi with Soba and Scallions to Chinese Cabbage Soup with Cellophane Noodles to Italian Minestra of Swiss Chard and Rice.

Amazon.com Review
Soup seems to revive the spirit even as it contents thestomach. In Judith Barrett's case, it also helped her lose 10pounds. These low-fat and reasonably low-calorie soups, she claims, provided filling comfort as she cut back on calories and on theoverall quantity she ate, helping her lose weight and keep it off.

The 100-plus recipes in Saved by Soup contain, at maximum, three grams of fat per three-quarter-cup portion. (Most of us eat morethan that, and in restaurants a serving is at least a full cup.)

Barrett explains how to de-fat homemade stocks and store-boughtbroth. Her recipes start with a light, clear consommé graced withangel hair pasta and fine strips of fresh spinach, then progress tohefty Pasta e Fagioli, a section on chowders, chicken soups both thickand thin--including one with fluffy matzoh balls--and verdant springsoups like Creamy Watercress. There are rustic Italian minestreand chilled soups for summer. Perhaps best of all are chili-spikedRacy Red Lentil and clever, chunky Summer Fruit "Minestrone," amelange of fruit cut up in mint-perfumed orange juice.

Thenutritional analysis provided for each recipe proves Barrett'spoint--that soups can be both lean and flavorful. Glorious colorphotos show that they can also be eye filling. --Dana Jacobi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spooky & Beautiful - all in one!
I bought this in 2009 for my 3 year old... she LOVED it. The illustrations are stunning...especially if you lean towards liking the spookier side of things in general.

The story is sweet - actually rather moral more so than scary. In fact I don't think there is anything scary about this book - perhaps spooky and certainly gross but not scary.

I love this one year round!

My daughter sings the tune "bone soup is what I make...." all-year-long!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Halloween story with a moral!
I purchased this book because my 3 year old grandson enjoys stories with ghosts and witches. No ghosts in this one, but there is a witch, a beast, some zombies and mummies, to name a few. There is just enough story on each page to hold a little guy's attention. The pictures are not brightly colored, which is in keeping with the Halloween theme, but they are well drawn.I liked the story - complete with a moral. This is a well done children's book.My biggest criteria to receive my approval is that it needs to be enjoyable for an adult to read.If the adults in a child's life don't enjoy it, it won't get read. This one will be read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Addition To Our Collection
I purchased this book for my daughter's birthday a few weeks ago and can say that we have read this book at least 60 times since then.It is a delightful read and not only does my daughter (she is 3) enjoy both the photos and story but so do I!The illustrations are fresh and vibrant and excellent considering it was both written and illustrated by Cambria Evans (what a talent!).I have purchased multiple copies of this book for other little ones in my family and it hasn't disappointed yet.Thank you, Cambria, for bringing such an engaging and witty story to life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Savory easy recipes, great for everyday
Many cookbooks, especially those written by celebrity chefs, suffer from too much complexity. I call it the "making their mark disease" because it seems to be about showing off more than writing great recipes real people can prepare and enjoy. I favor cookbooks that present fairly simple, adaptable recipes, like '500 Soups'. Just like my other current favorite cookbook, 'Quick & Easy Thai: 70 Everyday Recipes by Alison Miksch', 500 Soups has a number of delicious recipes accompanied by color photos, and then variations on each recipe. Of course because it has more recipes it has many more variations.

It includes recipes for making beef, vegetable, fish, and chicken stocks from scratch. All the recipes use scratch ingredients, and you can elect to use boullion, base, or prepared stocks. All ingredients should be available in any grocery store. Most recipes use measurements that are easy to multiply or divide, and are easy to adjust according to your own tastes. For example, I don't care for flaming hot spices, just a touch of heat, so I always reduce those.

Some are good for preparing in batches and freezing, some are better prepared and eaten fresh. There are broth soups, creamy soups, and red sauce soups, some with meat and fish, some vegetarian. Something for all occasions. (Plain yogurt is a nice substitute for heavy cream and coconut milk. Not quite the same because it adds a bit of tang. Add it at the very last or it will separate and look yucky.)

Here is a sampling:
Red-hot spicy chickpea and pasta soup
potato and garlic soup
beef and barley soup
ginger and salmon soup
spicy sausage and bean soup

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in the 500 series
The 500 soups provides 125 recipes for a variety of soups from everyday to exotic variations. Each of the 125 recipes has four minor variations that tweak the item into a different version by adding a new flavor profile. This is hands down the best cookbook in the series and provides excellent recipes for easy use. There are tons of great flavored soups that are easy to make from this book and may ones that are hearty enough to serve as a meal. This truly is an essential book for those who like to make soups.

Product Description

Invariably, armies are accused of preparing to fight the previous war. In Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Nagl—a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and the current conflict in Iraq—considers the now-crucial question of how armies adapt to changing circumstances during the course of conflicts for which they are initially unprepared. Through the use of archival sources and interviews with participants in both engagements, Nagl compares the development of counterinsurgency doctrine and practice in the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960 with what developed in the Vietnam War from 1950 to 1975.

In examining these two events, Nagl—the subject of a recent New York Times Magazine cover story by Peter Maass—argues that organizational culture is key to the ability to learn from unanticipated conditions, a variable which explains why the British army successfully conducted counterinsurgency in Malaya but why the American army failed to do so in Vietnam, treating the war instead as a conventional conflict. Nagl concludes that the British army, because of its role as a colonial police force and the organizational characteristics created by its history and national culture, was better able to quickly learn and apply the lessons of counterinsurgency during the course of the Malayan Emergency.

With a new preface reflecting on the author's combat experience in Iraq, Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife is a timely examination of the lessons of previous counterinsurgency campaigns that will be hailed by both military leaders and interested civilians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This book is required reading in counter insurgency courses and courses on American foreign policy. There is a very good reason in that it is an excellent primer on the problems the U.S. has faced in dealing with small wars. The U.S. Army and citizenry has become accustomed to large war campaigns that are measured in terms of land and fatalities.Opponents facing the U.S. have learned the weaknesses inherent in large institutions and found ways to effectively exploit them. This book compares and contrasts the British efforts to fight the communist insurgency in Malaysia with those of the U.S. in Vietnam. The focus of the book is that the British history of policing its territories has left its military better positioned to learn and adapt to insurgency whereas the culture of the U.S. military has failed to do this.

This book was written prior to the current Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns and its lessons have since been incorporated into U.S. strategy. The successes the U.S. has enjoyed in these campaigns have come about because it has started to learn the lessons outlined in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Organization
The author review military doctrine in dealing with local insurgencies. He compares the British experience in Malaysia and the American experience in Viet Nam.The focus on the book is in describing a "learning organization."This is one that adapts and learns; that evolves to meet new challenges. While this applies in combat, it also has value in all organizations that deal with challenges.

This is an excellent companion book to the newU.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual

5-0 out of 5 stars Important lessons for today
Colonel Nagl has written one of the best books on recent military history I have yet to read.He examines the past experiences in Vietnam and Malaya, pointing out what the failures and success of those experiences and translates them into an astounding piece of history for the present and the future. It is a blueprint for what to do and what not to do, given the current and quite likely future of warfare. It is a telling book by a combat leader. He writes with exceptional clarity and he work is replete with references and the bibliography is extraordinary.Everyone should read this book.In addition he is also the author of the Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgeny Field Manual, another excellent and detailed book on COIN operations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly introspective and honest
As a military history buff I feel like I have a good understanding of the dynamics of the Vietnam War and the reasons for the outcome from the perspective of the United States. However, Colonel Nagl puts the whole issue in a much more focused perspective than anything else I have ever read. (A quick note: Although the book addresses the British experience in Malaya and the US experience in Vietnam, the clear objective is to better understand Vietnam by comparing and contrasting it to Malaya. Hence, my focus here on Vietnam). By taking a methodical, academic approach, this book sets forth very specific criteria by which to measure the performance of the British and US militaries, delivering a well thought out and rational discussion of what must be done to counter an insurgency and how Britain and the US fared in their respective conflicts. More than that, it explains why the outcomes of Malaya and Vietnam were so different, not just from a tactical or strategic perspective, but also in terms of the overall structure and philosophy of the British and US armies. Much has been written about why the US failed to achieve its objectives in Vietnam, but I found this book to be far more thorough and insightful - and therefore more credible - than anything else out there.

On another note, it is extremely refreshing and encouraging to see this level of introspection and intellectual rigor from an Army officer, something I have noticed more and more in today's Army. To lead the US military into the future and prepare its personnel for the conflicts of today and tomorrow, this is precisely the kind of thoughtful self-examination and open inquisitiveness that officers will need to demonstrate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is the U. S. Army a learning institution ?
This was required reading for a graduate course in the history of American military affairs. The purpose of John A. Nagl's book was to explore the reasons why the British army was able to change its strategy and tactics of war fighting in order to successfully conduct a counterinsurgency operation in Malaya from 1948 through 1960, and why the U. S. army failed in its counterinsurgency challenge in Vietnam from 1950 through 1973, because its leaders clung to their strategy and tactics of annihilation.Nagl's thesis, for which he cogently argued in his book, was that the answer lied in the "organizational culture" differences between the British and U. S. armies."The organizational culture of the British army allowed it to learn how to conduct a counterinsurgency campaign during the Malayan Emergency, whereas the organizational culture of the U.S. Army prevented a similar organizational learning process during and after the Vietnam War" (213).

As Nagl so aptly pointed out, the British army was structured on a regimental system whereby soldiers and officers served together for their whole careers, which gave them several advantages to learn and improve their war fighting skills.Units could quickly change their tactics and training methods as they found the counterinsurgency techniques that brought them mission success in the field. The British also learned from over one hundred years of colonial rule around the globe, that it was prudent to cultivate the trust and listen to the local populace.Since the British army was small, its senior leadership was in closer contact with the military operations in Malaya and more readily willing to listen to their junior officers' advice. In sharp contrast, Nagl argued that the institutional culture of the U.S. Army was too intransigent to change its learning cycle."An army that saw its raison d'etre as winning wars through the application of firepower and maneuver to annihilate enemy forces simply could not conceive of another kind of war in which its weapons, technology, and organization not only could not destroy the enemy, but usually could not even find or identify him" (198).

No doubt, Nagl was correct in implying that had the U.S. commanders listened to the advice of those who called for using counterinsurgency tactics in Vietnam, they may have faired better. However, it is important to note that the British failed in conducting a successful counterinsurgency in Palestine, mainly because they could not win the trust of the Jews to help them since virtually the entire Jewish population were united in their quest for independence.Similarly, the North Vietnamese Communists under the inspired leadership of Ho Chi Minh, commanded the respect and support of probably more of the Vietnamese populace than the U.S. or the intolerably corrupt government of the South Vietnamese could ever hope to win over. Thus, another lesson for governments to learn is to carefully pick and choose when and where to militarily intervene.

Recipes, preparation and photos combine to make this a worthwhile addition to the collection of an active cook and entertainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for soup basics and amazing flavors!
I got this book because I have never made a soup other than chicken soup.It is amazing for learning the basics.I have made about 8 of the soups in the book so far and they are all amazing. Some of the receipes are more basic and some are more complex. My favorite is the soup with squash, bowtie pasta, bacon, and greens. My other favorite is the white bean and kale soup made with spanish churrizo.MMM!!I do have to say though, that the summer soup section is pretty much worthless to me because the soups are all cold and I'm not into that.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Used to be Leery of Home Made Soup
I have never liked home made soup, but a friend persuaded me that Fall is the perfect season to celebrate with soup.
So last Fall, 2009, I bought this book because of the pictures and the Scallop and Corn Chowder recipe I had seen when glancing through. So far I have made 8 of the soups. Allwere delicious except for the chicken chili where I misread the recipe and added 3 cans of chilies. (I don't normally cook with canned chilies) We still ate our entire bowls of soup. Tasty, but way too hot. The sour cream made the heat tolerable. The scallop, corn chowder was delicious. The tomato fennel was worthy of a party and cured a friend of her cold (I had never cooked with fennel before), the roasted tomato opened a game dinner (but I added tomato puree for more tomato flavor), the mushroom melange was perfect once I added a little sherry, the the paella was more than very good, the French lentil was stick to your ribs, the tomato dill was really helped by the white cheddar and I still have 14 of the fall and winter ones I want to try. For once in my life I may actually pray for cool rainy weather. But I could embrace the spring and summer soups once the weather heats up. So I can no longer say I don't like home made soup, this cookbook converted me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicous, easy, wonderful collection recipes
I received this book as a Christmas gift and after trying the first "winter" soup, have been going back to this book every weekend for a new wonderful recipe to try. These soups are absolutely delicious! It's certainly not a reference book--don't buy this if you're looking for a book to have on hand to be able to tell you how to make basic chili, or chicken noodle soup--but it is a great place for ideas, both for the experienced cook and the not-so-experienced one.

Pros:
* Attention to detail--the author has notes about where to find less common ingredients, exactly which parts of the vegetables to use, and ways to add or remove ingredients or spices
* Great organization. Not sure what to try? Just pick the current season and look at the soup calendar.
* Variety. Some meat and potato soups, some chowders, stews, creamy soups, chunky soups, vegetables, whole-meal, traditional, exotic, etc.
* Accurate serving size predictions and time-to-make estimates.
* Beautiful pictures.
* Recipes are not too difficult, but not too basic.
* Delicious. I was skeptical on a couple that didn't include very many spices or seasonings, but mmmm. I would never have thought I would like something called celery bisque, but it was gobbled up faster than I could ladle out bowls in my house.
* Includes ideas for bread to serve with it, and other serving additions.
* Includes tips about preparation, and how much of the recipe you can make ahead.
* Doesn't demand home-made stocks or broths, but does give recipes on how to use these if you have the time and energy.
* Relatively healthy. I was surprised how few recipes called for cream as a thickener. The author makes good use of pureed vegetables to thicken creamy soups, and other ways to make the soups delicious without packing on the fat and calories.

Cons:
* A lot of fennel. The author clearly loves it, and has several recipes that feature fennel not just as a flavor adder but as a main ingredient. Had to skip these. (This would not be a con if you were a fennel lover though!)
* Different recipes make vastly different quantities--some recipes I had to double just to feed 6 people, others I ended up with a giant pot of soup that, while delicious, was still hard to go through before it went bad. Just pay attention to the "servings" label and you should be fine.

Overall: highly recommended. My most-used cookbook now by far (and I have a LOT), and I have already bought several copies for friends. If you like to make soup, BUY THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars great gift for soup lovers!
i bought this book as a christmas gift for a couple who love to make soup, and they seem to have really enjoyed it.the book is divided into sections by season, and there is also a section with accompaniments (salads, breads, sandwiches).there are some unique recipes that aren't found in other books.i would definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys eating or making soup. ... Product Description
Previously available only through free distribution to prisons, this life-changing book is the result of charitable donations from sales of Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul and gifts from thousands of individuals.

In the spring of 2000, over 100,000 copies of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul were distributed to prisoners, prison libraries and prison ministries throughout the United States. The hope was that this collection of stories would touch the hearts of prisoners and offer them hope and encouragement, as well as inspire them to transcend the limiting thinking and behaviors of their past.

The book was so successful that the co-authors soon found themselves flooded with requests for the book from family members, correctional officers, prison volunteers and others. Because of this huge demand, the decision was made to also release the book to the general public. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't read in the shower
I sent this to my brother, who's doing three to five for aggravated frottage. He said I should warn everyone not to get caught reading this outside of your cell or the other inmates will make you "drink their chicken soup."

5-0 out of 5 stars All Things Good and Knowledgeable
My son, unfortunately, is in a county jail for probation violation.I figured since this is where he has to be, lessons should be learned and time should be positively spent. So I came to Amazon and searched for books for those incarcerated and came upon this one.I am familiar with Chicken Soup books, so I knew this would be a good read for my son.Turns out it is and not only is he reading it, but his cellmate and they have positive dialogue to share instead of being idle while serving time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars love this book
Great book, perfect condition arrived in a short amount of time, long before the expected delivery date

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great book!
I've always loved chicken soup and rice. My late great-grandmother, Ethel, always made me homemade chicken, chicken soup and rice. This book takes me back to the days my mother, my father, my sister, and I went to Ethel's house. My late great-grandfather, Isadore, would cook the chicken because Ethel was blind. So, it reminds me of the time we were all together as a family. It brings back happy memories of all the love we shared over bowls of hot soup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
This book was purchased as a birthday gift for a 4 year old boy. He squealed with delight and hugged it when told it was his to keep and he did not have to return it to the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
My 7 year old daughter brought this book home from the school library. It was a little easy for her reading skills, but she loved it anyways. My 4 year old daughter started reading it and now we can't get her to return it to school. The book is small but this is better for little hands. This is a great book for any age! The pictures are cute and go well with the writing. The rhyming makes it easy to get to know the months. I recommend this book to every parent!

4-0 out of 5 stars A way to relate to teens over difficult topics
Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children
More Creative Interventions for Troubled Children and Youth

I am always trying to find new ways to relate to the teens I treat in therapy. The nature of this book, with its short stories and voices of real teens, is one way that I have found to reach out to teens about difficult topics. In particular, the section on death and dying has afforded me countless opportunities to assign "homework" to my clients where they read another teens' thoughts on their own loss.Similarly, the sections on family matters and abuse have been useful for me as way to open up discussions. These stories are easy to read and my clients have shared that they laugh, cry, and get a new perspective on tough topics when I assign them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cooking Investment for your family and for the working mom!
I am a professional artist and mother of three. This book is FABULOUS! I have made 175 of the soups or stews in this book so far and have loved everyone of them. Of course I favor some over the others but that is my own individual taste. Each recipe is bursting with seasonings and different flavors. I have even added a little extra on my own to give it my own little twist. Being a mother of a teenager a 4 yr old and 3 yr old plus a husband , I would say buy this book if you want to save time and the hassle of dishes and cooking time. You can even use your slow cooker and not worry about the rest!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every recipe I have tried so far is AMAZING
I have had this book since last fall, and I made soups and stews from it all winter. I can honestly say, I have not had a disappointing experience yet. Vollstedt has included hearty and meaty soups as well as light options, traditional recipes and some very original creations. I have also used a few bread recipes in this book and have been making them over and over. It was perfect for winter, and I can still use it in summer to make chilled soups, which are also included. I LOVE this book. I am looking forward to her Big Book of Casseroles, which I am purchasing now!
