3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated
This was an excellent book at the time it was written, but needs to be updated for the more recent versions of SAS and for changes of terminology usage prompted by relational data bases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the programmer analyst crowd.
I have a masters degree in taxation. My company logically put me to work doing data analysis and project development. I use SAS, VB, ACCESS, EXCEL, whatever gets the job done. I do not speak, nor do I want to speak, COBOL.SAS is my only avenue to Main Frame data. What is available from SAS andfrom third parties is disgusting. This book is like the many comprehensiveWindows books. I had never used SAS variable arrays before and this booktaught me all I need to know. Probably not for the super SAS geek, but forthose many of us needing to do our own data access and analysis using SAS,definitely the most complete single volume on the market. Well worth themoney.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Not perfect, but excellent. After looking at the reviews on Amazon, I decided to postpone buying this book. My mistake. The is the best book on the SAS language within one set of covers. It should not be your firstintroduction to SAS, but after you have your feet wet and decide to jump inall the way, it is a must have.

In any situation you find yourselfprogramming in SAS, you will not use all SAS has to offer. Certainly if youplan to take the certificataion test you will need to know more and this isone of the aids you need. Rick, or Mr. Aster to me, uses English, realEnglish, the way people think and talk, to descibe SAS computereze.

Yes, it's heavily technical, but most people once they start thinking inthe technical language cannot weave in and out of regular English.Rickcan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but not that bad
I agree with the previous reviewer on that this book is somewhat disappointing for professional SAS programmers - not very many "secrets" has been revealed actually. It didn't even explainclearly the key SAS programming concept of "Program Data Vector"while it claims to demonstrate how SAS engine works behind the scene. Thenew version is no much different from the old one but appending a SAS6.10update list (like "what's new"). I suspect either the authors orthe publisher or both didn't put much work on this new version - that'svery un-professional! However, considering the sad fact that there'ssomehow few good SAS programming book out there, this classic one deservessome respect in SAS community. I read it 2 years ago and I found sometimesI still look it up as a reference on some topics - for the material itcovers, it's rather solid.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book is a turkey
In stark contrast to the title, this book is NOT for professionals, at least not professional programmers, and certainly not for anyone who wishes to become a professional SAS programmer.Any secrets in this book are destined to remain secrets of the authors after the reader has read them.Consider, for example, the half page on transporting files between computers. The only "secret" revealed is that it can be done, but not a word is said as to how. Finally, the 6.08-6.10 "update" is a very brief, uninformative appendix. The book is really about Release 6.06 and before, i.e. it is seriously out of date, despite its recent publication date. This book might possibly be slightly useful to managers who need to write technobabble about why they are advocating the use of SAS as a data management environment. It will be of negligeable value to anyone who will actually be called upon to accomplish serious work using the SAS language. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
This book is okay, probably wouldn't buy if I would have flipped through it first, but ordered online.Too many examples, not enough explanation on the actual examples.Alot of examples were redundant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preety Good Book
I have read most of the chapters of this book. I certainly advise anyone who would like to learn SAS SQL or improve her/his SAS SQL skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why spend the money?
I purchased this book one year ago under the influence of the high ratings here, but I didn't get chance to finish it until last week. After comparing this book with the SAS SQL manual (free online PDF file available at SAS website), I came to one question, why bother to buy this book? The book is not a copy of the SAS manual, but it is written in a strikingly similar pattern yet it provides LESS information than the SAS manual; on the contrary, the SAS manual gives you more materials, more examples, better narratives, clearer explanations than this full-of-typo book.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to read and follow; better for PROC SQL begginers
If you are new to PROC SQL, this is the right book. It covers all the basic queries, complex queries in simple content, some troubleshooting, and a little bit of efficiency. The layout throughout the book is very easy to read and follow. All examples contain PROC SQL codes, results, appropriate explanation, as well as part of SAS LOG and comparison in some examples. This book might be a little basic to power PROC SQL users. But compared to SAS SQL procedure user's guide, it is way better to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick way to learn SQL
An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days.(I skipped the text.)I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition.I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350

1-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Statistical Software
This huge, confusing volume is just one part of the encyclopedia of manuals the SAS Institute wants you to buy before you can use their software. Good luck finding your topic in it! Researchers have put up withthis unfriendly system for so long because SAS was a monopoly at first andwas the only software to correctly handle incomplete data correctly later. Now there are many more friendly programs with statistical advisor wizardscropping up everywhere. Shop around carefully before you invest in SAS. Bythe way, I have no financial investments or interests in any softwarecompany. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in what it covers, but limited
Since SAS didn't bother putting any documentation together for Enterprise Guide 3.0, a user guide is sorely needed. (SAS are happy to SELL you an Enterprise Guide book in their on-line store). This book covers some of the basic importing of data, summary statistics, simple plots and simple querying. It would be great if it was 2 or 3 times larger and covered the rest of the features of EG in similar depth. However, if you are beginning to use Enterprise Guide, this is a very good place start. ... Read more
