This is a superb guide to the prevention of childhood injury--concise, carefully organized, clearly written, authoritative and realistic. It adopts a developmental approach to understanding the causes of injury and planning intervention, whether in infants, toddlers, preschoolers, elementary school children or young adolescents.Detailed information on specific injury is presented under an environmental rubric: the roadway, the home, the school and recreational area. Each chapter summarizes facts about the specific type of injury being considered, discusses developmental issues that affect its occurrence, and then offers guidelines for prevention. Both unintentional and intentional injuries are covered. The authors' recommendations are addressed to schools and child care centers; health care providers; public agencies; legislators and regulators; law enforcement professionals; voluntary organizations; designers, architects, builders and engineers; business and industry; and mass media.Children cannot be expected to avoid injury on their own.Adults must grant them freedom from injury by providing a safe environment. ... Description:
During 1999-2003, the US Food and Drug Administration reported a total of 1307 processed food product recalls, most of which were avoidable. There are many areas of the processed food supply chain where significant exposure to risk exists. Additionally, there are systems that can be used in-house at manufacturing facilities, such as hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) and radio frequency identification (RFID) that can be very beneficial in recall avoidance. Effective employee training is another key point for consideration. In the event of a recall, a company must be prepared in advance with a detailed crisis management procedure. Companies should consider recall insurance, depending on their size and market dominance. Public relations strategies are critical in surviving a recall. Care must be taken to connect to the consumer and communicate a strong message. Findings from analysis suggest potential reduction of product recalls through recommended preventive measures including the use of HACCP and RFID systems. ... Read more

Book Description
If you are litigating accidents involving emergency vehicles, you know that many factors contribute to hazardous operations. In this well-documented volume, Stephen S. Solomon, firefighter, EMT, engine captain, fire commissioner, and optometrist shows how vision is an integral component in accidents, and in their prevention.

Whether fire truck, police car, or ambulance, an emergency vehicle's fast speed, bells, whistles, sirens, and flashing lights contribute to excitement-laden and potentially hazardous situations. For the attorney or investigator who must reconstruct events, it is important to understand how some of these supposed safety features actually cause rather than help prevent accidents.

The knowledge you will gain about the anatomy of the eyes will give you the edge in accident reconstruction. You will learn how inadequately trained emergency vehicle drivers make for a potentially lethal situation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In response
I have a copy of this book as well, and I decided to check on the comments of the last reviewer. I didn't find any mention of waiting 1-3 minutes before calling 911 in cases of CPR. In fact, the book makes a point of notputting off calling 911, especially if you haven't practiced CPR before. The book provides natural remedies interspersed in the text. They are notedwith an icon next to the paragraph so the reader will know that these arealternatives to regular medicine. I am not an advocate of natural medicine,so I really didn't pay much attention to those paragraphs.I do suggestthat anyone really serious in first aid should take a class (from RedCross, for example). That is the only way you can safely practice CPRbefore really performing it.

1-0 out of 5 stars First Aid and Safety For Dummies
I have been a big fan of the "For Dummies" series and own many copies of their books. However, my most recent purchase, First Aid and Safety for Dummies, has been extremely disappointing. The purpose ofreading this book was to find a book that my first aid and CPR studentscould reference for more details than the standard class covered. However,I found the book to have incorrect information, and information thatcontradicts the nationally accepted standards. The authors are medicaljournalist with no documented emergency medical experience. The onlysection of the book that had reasonable information was the "SpecialSituations" section. The first aid, and preparation section hasrecommendations that could be harmfull, even deadly if followed. Forexample, the book mentions numerous times that first aid and CPR should beperformed for 1-2 minutes before EMS(911) is activated, the nationalstandard is; as soon as an adult person is found unresponsive to activate911. The reason is that most adults go unconscious or into cardiac arrestis due to an irregular heart rhythm, this rhythm can only be reversed withdefibrillation by a portable defibrillator (like in the show ER). This iswhy most communities have police, fire, and ambulances carrying theseunits, airlines also now carry them. A delay of a "few" minutescan mean the difference between life and death. The book also makes arecommendation for during an asthma attack to use the herbal supplementephedra (it mixes alternative medicine in with traditional medicine, duringthe first aid section;versus having a seperate chapter addressingalternative medicine). Ephedra has been known to cause deaths in healthyyoung people (it is used as an energy boost, simular to caffeine)someonemay misinterpret this and use it alongside with a prescibed asthma inhaler, this could be deadly. These are just a sampling of the mistakes(personally, the two most scariest in my opinion). I have written IDG booksand hope to get a response. My recommendation is if you want a book onFirst Aid or CPR stick with a nationally recognized organization (i.e.American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National SafetyCouncil)many of these publicationsare available online. And mostimportantly, take a class, the books are invaluable, but so isn't the handson experience you will recieve. I am writing this as a First Aid and CPRInstructor with 12 years of emergency medicine experience. Once again, other than this particular book, I have enjoyed and found the "ForDummies" series very informative. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
A ground-breaking new book, Beyond Human Error: Taxonomies and Safety Science deconstructs the conventional concept of human error and provides a whole new way of looking at accidents and how they might be prevented. Based on research carried out in the rail, nuclear, and defense industries, the authors show how, by concentrating solely on human error, systems and sociological factors are frequently ignored in contemporary safety science. They also argue that the information processing view of human cognition, the foundation of the majority of safety science and ergonomics, is hopelessly simplistic and leads to ineffective or even misguided intervention strategies.

Wallace and Ross explore how what they call the technically rational view of science can hamper the process of creating a taxonomy of error events, and the implications this has for the current orthodoxy. In laying out the limitations of the technically rational viewpoint, they clearly define their own alternative approach. They begin by demonstrating that the creation of reliable taxonomies is crucial and provide examples of how they created such taxonomies in the nuclear and rail industries. They go on to offer a critique of conventional frequentist statistics and provide coherent, easy to use alternatives. They conclude by re-analyzing infamous disasters such as theSpace Shuttle Challenger accident to demonstrate how the standard view of these events ignores social and distributed factors. The book concludes with a stimulating and provocative description of the implications of this new approach for safety science, and the social sciences as a whole.

While providing a clear and intelligible introduction to the theory of human error and contemporary thinking in safety science, Wallace and Ross mount a challenge to the old orthodoxy and provide a practical alternative paradigm. ... Read more
