4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful basics and fun too
As a nurse practitioner with no formal training in reading x-rays, this book has been useful in helping me understand the basics so I can talk to the radiologists and rad technicians somewhat intelligently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy!
This book is so easy to work with. It gave you exactly the information you need and nothing else. One of the best books of my education thus far.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginner
This is a pretty good book for a third and fourth year medical student as well as a good quick reference for an intern.I would suggest purchasing it some time in the begnning of third year to help along during rotations. It does have limited CT and MRI information.Otherwise, it's pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent radiology text for med students or residents in other fields
This is one of the recommended texts for the Radiology elective in our school. It's excellent comparing to other introduction texts. I read this text and Felson; Felson is great to introduce principles of imaging, and how to read chest Xray. This text is excellent to include most important abnormal and normal findings that a medical student should know. Very readable as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, quick intro
I am a family nurse practitioner, I work in an urgent care where I order a lot of head CTs, I think the chapter in this book on the subject is excellent. There are a lot of "within normal limits" films in this book, there could be more common abnormal films.Great beginning book, and a relatively simple read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning the basics
I'm a PA student and we didn't spend a lot of class time on radiology. When I had to take a test I needed a good review. This book worked really well and was easy to get through. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool!
I am in school to become a physicians assistant. I was told by a friend to buy this book and I am so glad I did. The text is easy to read and they did a great job with the ilustrations- they really help clarify what each chapter covers. I have done a few of the self-tests and so far they have helped me focus on what I need to review in each topic. Lastly, I LOVE the on-line information. This book does a great job providing resources for further study. This book is great for all kinds of students in the health care field!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Text
This is a great new book, richly illustrated and ideal for medical students in their 3rd and 4th years, rad tech students, physician assistants, radiologist assistants, and trainees --especially in Emergency Medicine, Surgery and Internal Medicine -- who will be called on to interpret everyday bread-and-butter examinations.

It stresses the important fundamentals in a bulleted, easy-to-read format that is less onerous than some other fundamental texts but substantial enough to allow one to make the diagnoses that non-radiologists are called on to make. In addition, the on-line material available for access with this text has dozens of really great interactive, image-based quizzes that are keyed to the book.

I would highly recommend this book to all students, interns, residents and health care professionals who need to learn the fundamentals of radiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
An excellent overview of Pediatric radiology who need to be familiar, but not expert in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goodand very helpful for quick review
It is very well written and all pertinent topics for a resident are included without too much details. It is good for a quick overall review of the subject with good images for residents preparing for oral boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to pediatric radiology
This is a well-written text that is easily readable during your first pediatric radiology rotation (slightly bigger than Helm's pink book). It's clearly targeted at radiology residents, since the author includes short explanations and tips on performing common fluoro procedures and anticipates questions most residents have when first starting peds. Given its size and cost, some compromises with the book were made (I would like to see more pictures and diagrams), but the ones in the book are generally of excellent quality. Pertinent films are discreetly labelled to illustrate major findings, a major benefit to newer residents. The topics are discussed clearly and succintly, with the most relevant facts of each topic included. Given it's size it's not overly comprehensive, but this is probably a plus for most residents frustrated by larger texts that drone on about one topic or focus on obscure topics that are unlikely to be helpful early in their training. This book is much better than two larger and more expensive texts I have looked at, the Peds Requisites and the Essentials of Peds Radiology. ... Read more

Book Description

In the past five years, the development of new imaging technologies that make possible faster and more accurate diagnoses has significantly improved the imaging of disease and injury. This new edition of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology describes and illustrates these new techniques to prepare medical students and other radiology learners to provide the most optimal and up-to-date imaging management for their patients. Not only are new diagnostic techniques outlined, such as the multidetector computed tomography diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and the diffusion-weighted magnetic-resonance imaging of stroke, but hundreds of new diagnostic images have been included to illustrate the radiological characteristics of common diseases with state-of-the-art computed radiography, ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography, and magnetic-resonance images. The text has been completely reviewed and updated to present the latest and best strategies in diagnostic imaging.

New interventional radiology procedures have been added, including vertebroplasty, a percutaneous injection treatment of painful spinal compression fractures; uterine artery embolization, a surgical alternative to hysterectomy in women with painful or bleeding uterine fibroids; and radiofrequency ablation, a percutaneous technique for treating unresectable tumors in the liver and other organs with probes that superheat and thus destroy cancer cells.

A new chapter on advances in diagnostic imaging describes many cutting-edge imaging technologies, such as three-dimensional and digital imaging, functional magnetic-resonance imaging, PET-CT (positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography), cardiac calcium CT scoring, multidetector gated cardiac CT, and molecular imaging.

3-0 out of 5 stars PICTURES WERE OKAY
Review by a medical student interested in Radiology

This book is good if you want a starter to book for radiographic images that encompasses a variety of fields of film study. It was an easy read for each chapters, but way too basic, the author rambles as if you're a 6th grader. So, I only suggest this book if you want only pictures to get an idea of what radiographic films show for some common pathology. The book started with the OVER-SIMPLIFIED anatomy with comparison to the radiographic images. You will need a better book for a more in-depth review of Radiology. There is hardly anything on Neuroradiology, IR, flouroscopy, etc. It was only SLIGHTLY useful for my General Radiology rotation. Plus, most hospitals usually has this book in their library, may be an edition older though.

One think that bothered me about the illustrations were that the lesions were usually not labeled, they were just discussed or mentioned within the illustration's caption or the chapter explanation. The book is pricey for what it contains. It should be worth $40 or less!

4-0 out of 5 stars "A great book for medical students"
I's a really good book for those who don't think about being radiologist, an understanding introductory book and it seems that it was speacially done for medical students.
It arrived in just 1 week, and it is fast if you consider that I'm from Peru, the book arrived in good conditions, so I have no complains.
Definitively what i was looking for. A good purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars slow to ship
Product arrived in great condition but took almost 2 weeks to ship.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will buy it
I am a medical student taking my radiology elective (finally) in the spring of my fourth year. Our department loaned the book to us during the rotation.I've found it to be one of those few books that I will actually purchase to have on my shelf at home (and I'm NOT going into radiology). It is written in a pleasing, conversational manner. The illustrations are of high quality. The discussions are at just the right level for an introduction to radiology. And there are many little "problems" presented throughout the text for the student to puzzle over. The answers are either listed in back, or turn up later in the "conversation" within a few pages.Although it seems long (over 500 pp?), it is mostly pictures.I highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars very systematized book
this book is very smart up to the point updated easy to recall and to study i do believe that is essential to all A,E team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid basic info
The best basic radiology reference I've encountered for those of us who aren't regularly interpreting Xrays but need to have a systematic approach that will work for us when we need it.It provides a guide for analyzing an X-ray in a step-by-step fashion and gives relevant pointers regarding subtle findings that you don't want to miss and common pitfalls.Contains lots of useful (and clearly reproduced) sample Xrays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb pocket reference
Excellent content and organisation with high quality pictures. Useful size to carry to work and will no doubt make an A&E term or beginning of radiology training much easier. I particularly liked the summary at the end of each chapter for take-home points.
Obviously not the most in-depth reference but at this size and price it is an excellent supplement to a larger text. Not too sure how I survived a year of A&E without it...!

An exhaustive text on skeletal radiology. Though my experience is limited, it would certainly seem that if its not in here we don't know about it yet...perhaps thats too great a generalization but this text will definitely prove beneficial beyond the classroom as many doctors can attest.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful for resident's quick review
useful radiographic textbook for the orthopaedic surgeon. contains short overview of the disease described in each chapter and a lot of x-rays demonstrating radiographic findings. we found it useful for our residents before exams and during daily work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Skeletal Radiology vol 2
Very good book and since i'm a student at RMIT in melbourne australia and terry yochum was once a teacher here, he gave us a visit and lectured from his book. I recommend this book to anyone who is doing any form of skeletal radiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best radiology book on the market, great for nat'l boards
I graduated chiropractic school this year.I used this book in school and found this it to be filled with lots of info on soft and hard tissue pathology. The radiographs are excellent in this book.Every condition from spinal bifida occulta to fibrous dysplasia is described with the utmost detail.Every chapter has a helpful summary that summarizes all the important points of each condition.I also used this book to help me study for Part II, III and IV of the National Boards. However, if you really want a great book to study for the national boards do what my study group and I did, get the following:
National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The questions in these last 4 study guides are right on with the kind of questions encountered on the National Boards. These 5 books contributed greatly to helping my study group and I pass the boards. For example the Part IV Study Guide hadgreat sections on chiropractic technique, clinical impression and x-ray diagnosis. It presented the questions just like on the exam. These 5 books are must buys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yochum & Rowe Essentials
An essential text for all chiropractic and medical students as well as practicing doctors.Useful write-ups on hundreds of conditions.Wonderful coverage of arthritides and tumors.Huge section on normals and a small section on positioning. The only place it's lacking is in chest and abdomen, and that's because it's a book on skeletal radiology.I couldn't do without it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Outlines in Radiology...that is all
For a superficial text as this, it is more useful for the clinician peripheral to radiology, such as a surgeon, medical student, orthopedist, neurosurgeon, or emergency medicine specialist.

Outlined by subspecialty, relevant anatomy and pathology are presented in a list format.Rudimentary illustrations are provided.Differential diagnoses are provided for imaging findings. The book easily fits in a lab coat.

For the radiologist or resident, this book has limited value for expanding knowledge.I would only recommend this as a supplement to a real textbook - even for a medical student rotating in radiology, there are better alternatives.

Not recommended for radiologists or residents in radiology. It is suitable for anyone else desiring some quick read in a rotation or cursory survey of the field without a large investment in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the price
Two things are noteworthy about this book: the excellent black-white illustrations and quick review over common radiology questions. The book is divided by radiology sections, and usually start off with simple anatomy pictures and labelled illustrations of the relevant modality. This is very nice, since many radiology texts do not bother to show examples and illustrations of relevant anatomy. The illustrations are also much more valuable then looking at an atlas like Netter's, since only important radiological structures are drawn. The lists of differential diagnoses are good, though they require you to already what each diagnosis is. I don't find that a problem considering the size and scope of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You do not need lots of pictures to learn radiology!
This book is a great way to start getting acquainted with Radiology. It gives a good background on some technological facts and a useful coverage of specific pathologies that you need for differential diagnosis. Emphasison background knowledge can be more helpful for learning in radiology thensimply looking at radiology picture examples. This is a MUST for anyone working with a radiology department.

This is not due to Seller, I just don't like the book. I am not a transcriptionist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
Stedman's "Radiology Words" is a stellar imaging word referencefor the radiology transcriptionist. Being a full-time radiologytranscriptionist and having used Stedman's second edition for many yearswith extremely favorable results, I can only state emphatically that thiscurrent edition has greatly improved by bringing the vastly burgeoningradiological terminology up to date. Imaging modalities have exponentiallyincreased since the last Stedman's Radiology word reference [1995], andwith it, the imaging vernacular has exploded. This third edition hasaccomplished its mission.

Many more diagnostic and interventional termsare at hand, as well as mammographic, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, ultrasonographic and neuroradiological terms. All, of course, arethoroughly cross-referenced.

Additionally, five handy appendices areadded: 1) 19 pages of anatomical illustrations, the first 5 pages of whichdemonstrate anatomical planes/positions, 2) 4½ pages of various contrastmedia, 3) common radiological oncologic terms, 4) sample radiology reports[14, mind you] ranging from the simplest to nuclear medicine/MRI/CT, etc.,and 5) common terms of procedures.

This nearly 1000-page imaging tome isthe tops! I would strongly recommend this reference to anyone involved inimaging transcription. ... Read more

This latest edition of Textbook of Veterinary Diagnostic Radiology by Donald Thrall is a great improvement on the earlier edition (edition 2) that I had going through Uni.The basic physics is much more detailed, and the diagrams are great.Still the best in its field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This text should be part of any veterinarian's library. The images are clearly labeled and descriptions are very helpful.I refer to it often and almost always find the help I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vet School textbook
This has been the most helpful and clear textbook I've used since I've been inVeterianry school

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
The most useless book I bought during my degree. The photocopied radiographs are inadequate and their explanations aren't any better. The writing is choppy and hard to follow. The only useful part of the book was the explanation of how to actually take a radiograph. If you want to be able to interpret a radiograph I recommend you find a different book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for third year clinical rotations.
I bought this book during first year of medical school but didn't appreciate its quality until 3rd and 4th year (the clinical years).Concise text with many, many high-quality radiographs and studies.Covers the basics of diagnostic imaging and then moves to areas of the body: head, chest, abdomen, bone & joint, etc. with imaging modalities for each explained. An excellent way to learn how to look at films, ultrasounds, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine studies. Can't recommend it highly enough. ... Although it follows the topical outline that proved so successful in its earlier editions, the Fourth Edition of this respected book encompasses all of the advances and changes that have been made since last it was revised. It not only presents new ideas and information, it shifts its emphases to accurately reflect the inevitably changing perspectives in the field engendered by progress in the understanding of radiological physics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Practial text to have
Physics of Radiology isn't as complete a text as Martin's, it seems more like a handbook than a physics text, but it is definitely useful and is full of examples that I can't find in other books. It's a little difficult to read straight through because of the visual format (it looks like it was written on a typewriter), but the examples are great references. I would have liked it if the authors used units more often, so that I could more easily adapt the examples but in all, it was a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fab
I am a norwegian radiology student, and after searching through a heap of books on this subject, I found out this one was the best of the lot, even if it is outdated. Yes, an update would be nice..

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
It's quite clear most of the time.It has basic physics in it so you'd never need to refer to another textbook for simple things that you've forgotten.I wish it was a little more updated though. It's limited in it's coverage of things like neutron therapy. But this book is so good, you could use it as a self study guide, almost.

This is a great textbook to read, easy to swallow.
I think this is a must read for every radiology resident before starting subspecialized books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful resource
As a radiation oncologist, I find this book very useful and turn to it on many occasions.I do not need a text that goes into a great deal of depth about all aspects of radiology, but I need a resource to turn to when I find myself having to interpret abnormal pathology on imaging (beyond what the radiologist's report says). This book meets that purpose. It is easy to use, has just enough depth and breadth, and is full of beautiful pictures.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentFirst Read
This is an excellent introductory text book in radiology. It contains excellent images and covers the key fundamentals in radiology. It would be ideal for the PGY1 or PGY2 resident to read through to gain familarity in radiology before moving on to the major reference texts. Very readable book that does not overwhelm the junior resident with needless minutia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental of Diagnostic Radiology
This is the single excellent book for Radiology Residents and General Radiologists. Seperate sections on US and NM are the best parts of this book. CT Scan and MRI are dispersed with the General Radiology. If the authors create seperate sections of CT and MRI like US and NM in the next edition, the book will become the only perfect book in General Radiology. This book contains treasure of knowledge for the Radiology residents and racticing General Radiologists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise but not enough for residency.
Not a bad overview of most subjects, but some areas are lacking. The bone trauma subsection is particularly scant, excluding all of the fracture grading schemes.Additionally, while somewhat dedicated to differential generating, you don't really get a feel for what is actually common. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated radiology board review was prepared by the prestigious Duke University Department of Radiology. The book follows a case study format that challenges the reader to reach a diagnosis by presenting images, findings, and differential diagnosis before revealing the actual diagnosis. Three hundred cases are presented that cover every area of radiology, including chest imaging, breast imaging, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, vascular imaging, gastrointestinal imaging, genitourinary imaging, pediatric radiology, nuclear radiology, and ultrasound. Each case begins with a patient history, several images, and descriptions of the imaging findings, and then proceeds to a differential diagnosis and the actual diagnosis. The diagnosis is followed by a Key Facts section, divided into Clinical Facts and Radiologic Facts, that features bulleted common-sense pointers regarding pathologic and radiologic manifestations of the disease. Each case ends with a list of references. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice review for Orals but should be updated
The Duke Radiology Case Review is organized into 10 sections. Each section has 20 or more cases.Cases are outlined with the relevant clinical history, selected imaging findings, a differential diagnosis, a discussion covering key clinical facts and imaging findings.

Although dated, the material is appropriately presented, clear and concise.

Published in 1998, it is overdue for an update to include imaging findings relevant in other cross sectional studies.

Overall, the book is still high yield and I would recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book!
I got this as a first year and use the appropriate section for the rotation I am on.It is helpful as yet another source of case studies, and the discussion of a differential for each set of images is nice.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but expensive, old, easily replaced
Your time for oral board prep should be focused on seeing as many high yield images as possible with the least amount of time and money invested.Though the discussions/cases are good in this book, there are are only 30 cases/10 chapters covered. The book costs about $100.You could buy two to three "case review series" books with the same investment. These books have 200 cases each.Personally i have not found a case book that describes cases as you should on boards- findings, differential diagnosis, most likely diagnosis and additional comments.Wiser choices are available

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Board Exams
Having recently written the US and Canadian Boards for radiology, andhaving done umpteen CD roms and teaching files, I found this book to be oneof the most organized and focussed in preparing for board discussions. Itcovers a wide spectrum of cases and gives pointed pertinent positives andnegatives when reviewing the differential.Granted, it is not completelycomprehensive (but then, there is no single book that is... oh, if onlythere were)It is not a book that I would start studying with, but, inthe end, near the final few weeks, it is a good quick read (1-2 days)totest yourself and pick up some pointers(it is also much cheaper than thecourse itself!). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Radiology
I am a PA in the ED and of what I have read so far I have found this book to be very helpful and well constructed. It is an easy read and overal worth the money. It is probably best suited for someone who has some experience with x-rays and wants to expand futher or review. It does cover some basics and a lot of advanced stuff (CT, MRI, some nuclear scans) as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
As a practicing family/urgent care physician, this book has proven invaluable on numerous occasions. This book is easy to read with a great number of radiographs to look through.
I highly recommend this book to family physicians and internists
looking to add to their library collection. It is practical and a real time-saver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal text
Easily the best EM radiology book I've seen.Well-illustrated, well-written, well-referenced, addresses current imaging controversies, and is full of great teaching points.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text for emergency med residents
I'm a second year emergency med resident, and I love this book. It's written for and aimed at emergency physicians. There are a lot of black and white photos of x-rays, CTs, and some ultrasound. There are also many hand-drawn illustrations that highlight what the radiograph photos are showing.Because this book is written by EM docs, there is a focus on clinical treatment. The text really focuses on what's important in interpreting and managing pts with these radiographic findings. There are a lot of photos, illustrations, and easy-to-read useful tables.I only wish that there were more ultrasound photos, but despite that criticism, I can confidently recommend this book to any serious EM resident. ...
