4-0 out of 5 stars "It is a pity that sex is such an ugly little word."
This quote from D. H. Lawrence, cited in the preface provides the perfect setting and tone for this fascinating and comprehensive reference. The subject is universal, ubiquitous, whether we admit it or not.Sex drives commerce, influences history, and plays a larger part in all of our day-to-day lives that most of us would be willing to admit. This book explores it all.

The quotes are set off and/or put into context by brief commentaries, which go very far to the understanding of many of the quotes. The quotes are from all available sources, from the Bible, Plutarch, and Ovid to Al Goldstein, Andy Warhol, and Noel Coward. The quotes themselves are absolutely riveting, some highly clinicial, others highly cynical. There are the humorous, the base, the insightful, and the out-and-out ridiculours; you determine which are which.

The book is organized very simply, with a subject matter table of contents beginning with "Abortion" and "Adultery" and concluding with "Virginity" and "Wedding Nghts." There is also an index of quotation sources, so you can easily find a juicy tidbit from Mother Teresa, John Donne, Madonna, or e. e. cummings.

This is a very enjoyable read, one which will open your mind and broaden your horizons through exposure to the points of view and humor of many, many others. As such it is a superb addition to your collection, and an extremely unique resource for your next requirement to come up with an exciting, evocative, and in this case provocative quotation. ... Product Description
A Writing Aid that Inspires, Educates, and Entertains Writers is NOW Available

Nothing is more frustrating to a Writer than having to confront a period of Writer's Block - when the Muse leaves, Inspiration wanes, and Frustration just keeps rising. All creative output seems to have become swallowed by a Black Hole, and there is little or no Hope that the situation will ever change...

To those Writers who might be asking, "How can I get motivated to write again?" the solution is now at hand, because Independent Press, F. C. Sach & Sons, Publishers, have released "Words to Inspire Writers: A perpetual Calendar of classic Writing-related Quotations - on Writers, Writing, Words, Books, Literature, and Publishing - specifically selected to illustrate the Writing Process and to motivate Authors every day", edited by Gregory Victor Babic, which will provide Motivation for Writers Every Day of the Year.

Specifically selected Quotations (1,100 Quotations, in fact, from over 300 Authors!) for each Calendar Date illuminate all aspects of the Writing Process in this new book:

1. The First Quotation illustrates the Pre-Writing or Preparation Stage (of Thinking and Planning). For example:"Find your own quiet center of life and write from that to the world." - Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909)

2. The Second Quotation illustrates the Writing or Creation Stage (of Drafting and Editing). For example:"A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it." - Mark Twain (1835-1910)

3. The Third Quotation illustrates the Post-Writing or Celebration Stage (of Publishing and Marketing). For example:"To write what is worth publishing, to find honest people to publish it, and get sensible people to read it, are the three great difficulties in being an author." - Charles Caleb Colton (1780-1832) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Resource
It has been a joy to discover Australian author, Gregory Babic's book, Words to Inspire Writers. As a huge collector of quotes and verses, a 300 author 1,100 quote tome was one just I couldn't pass up. I've been reading through the gi-normous book of quotes amassed here. My heavens! What a vast body of work! It truly is impressive.

As a book of days with three quotes per day, Babic has designed the passages to carry writers through three stages of a daily writing process: the preparation and planning stage, the creation stage, and "...the Post-Writing or Celebration Stage of Publishing and Marketing."

I like being surprised daily by the vast number of brilliant authors, spanning thousands of years, from whom Babic has gleaned priceless gems of wisdom. The index in the book's finale is worth double its weight in gold, and truly simplifies finding favorite authors and quotes. It seems impossible to peruse such a fine volume and not come away inspired and enriched. I'm happy to reference Words to Inspire Writers and recommend it to friends and writers.

It takes two to speak the truth--one to speak, and another to hear.
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

5-0 out of 5 stars Will prove to be many a writer's best friend
Writing is a mentally draining job, and inspiration is the fuel to keep that tank filled. "Words to Inspire Writers" is the battery many writers will enjoy. With quotes to help with every stage of writing to pondering a concept, putting it to paper, or editing it down, the book will prove to be many a writer's best friend. "Words to Inspire Writers" is a strong choice for a gift to any writer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth having, worth delving into
I was given a copy of this, after complaining many times of writers' block, talking to the cat when I should be writing, and just plain sitting at my desk and drooling. I'd have to say it was worth having - not my favourite quote book, but I turn to it often and I'm glad I've got it. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quotations
Filled with clever quips, bits of advice and inspiration, this book is not just for authors or wannabes, but for any literary minded person. While I can imagine its potential as a daily calendar-page format, I enjoy the book format as I like reading days' worth of wonderful quotes at a sitting. There is also a helpful index of people quoted (Mark Twain is a special joy). From poets to philosophers to presidents, as well as authors, there is something for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words to inspire writers edited by Gregory Victor Babic
I am an Australian author of several books and have greatly enjoyed reading Greg Babic's wonderful selection of quotations. They are proving a source of wisdom and excitement to me in my own current writings. The quotations are ingeniously arranged under three stages of the writing process and should prove of great help to many other budding authors. Thank you, Greg!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
Impressive, enjoyable, and educational, Dingle's fine book sits front and center on my crowded reference bookshelf. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a fine place to start on your toast
I disagree with the one star reviewer... This is a simple straightforward discussion with examples of toasts and ideas for toasts by all the important members of the wedding party. All the examples of toasts arebrief (and let's keep it that way at the event too). There are helpful suggestions on presentation style, preparation, suitable content for toasts, and other useful items. I bought two copies...one for the couple and one for the parents. If it saves some time and helps them put together beautiful toasts, the book is easily worth the cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't embarrass yourself with this book.
An english degree? You've got to be kidding! This airy book is full of the obvious, the trite, and the truly embarrassing - note the section on (gasp) "clever" limericks! Many of these suggestions are notonly lacking in eloquence, they are utterly inappropriate. Those that areappropriate are merely obvious.Speak from your heart, and don't wasteyour money on this trash!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you need
From Best Man (which I am) to quick fill-in speeches, Diane offers a full array of eloquently written short and long speeches.Don't read them verbatim unless you have an english degree and everyone in the room knowsit. It had to tone mine down a bit but better to have it than not. ... Read more

To express it in a simple form, this book is a must for everyone interested in philosophy, ethics and what the jews have said about diverse themes throughout history. Its quotations come from people who lived in different times, places and cultural settings but who shared one thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An old - time favorite
The edition I have of this work was published in 1956. It is a very rich selection and has the signs of real scholarship and not simply amateur collecting. It organizes its entries alphabetically, and has the convenient device of numbering each entry. Looking down the list of citations I see many titles not read at all today.
It has much good Jewish religious thought but also a great deal of thought from all areas of life.
It is truly a wonderful source book.
A few examples from the Education entry.

"Education is that which remains, when one has forgotten everything one learned in school." Einstein
"We must endeavor to teach even the unintelligent." Rashi
" Thou shalt teach them diligently to the children." Deut. 4.9
" A Jew, however poor, if he had ten sons would put them all to letters, not for gain as the Christians do, but for the understanding of God's law, and not only his sons but his daughters." Abelard's School.Letter to Ephesians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Knowledge IS A Good Thing
Not that I have studied Latin - not even for a day - but who can resist a book that reminds you that "Male parta male dilabuntur" - "Things obtained by evil are lost by evil"?

(Or as we say after the 9th race - on that long train ride home from Belmont Park: "Oh, well - evil come, evil go.")

It's also been useful for: "The [New York] Post in those days was owned by Dorothy Schiff... [It] was...lacking in the razz-matazz of the News & the Mirror...the News [had]... memorable headlines."

One had to do with a court case involving Gloria Vanderbilt, who was in California at the time she was expected to appear in New York to testify. She had taken sick, however, & had to postpone her appearance.

The News' headline:

"Sick Gloria In Transit Monday,"

This was a pun on "Sic Gloria Transit Mundi" ("Thus passes the glory of the world").It was nice to have access to LPQ to be able to refer to the actual, unpunned phrase.

(The New York Daily News' Earl King's best headline also rates reverent mention. When the News theatre critic panned the Broadway musical, "Hotel Saigon, King came up with "Hell No, We Won't Go.")

This concludes the least reverent review of any book having to do with the study of the language spoken by the ancient Romans.See you at the Coliseum!

(The one in Rome; the one in New York is long gone - although the Augustic pretensions of the current Time Warner executives, whose corporate headquarters now occupies the site of the former Empire State Coliseum, are roughly comparable to those of the former rulers of the Roman Mediterranean empire.Pay tribute as you enter the building through its gleaming revolving doors, as you would have in Rome in 100 AD, ascending its now-ancient marble steps.)

5-0 out of 5 stars No frills
It is what it claims to be -- a book of Latin phrases and quotations.

Clean layout. The English translations are accurate (as far as I know) and easy to understand. Packed with the most frequently used Latin phrases.

The appendices of mottoes, major Greek writers, common Latin phrases, etc. are a nice touch.

It'd be useful to have an index of English -- or even Latin -- keywords in future editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand

4-0 out of 5 stars A book of quotations by largely assimilated Jews
I love books of quotations, and especially books of Jewish quotations. This one has many fine and interesting things in it, but I wish it had more Jewish religious content. Most of those cited here are assimilated Jews without deep knowledge of the Jewish religious tradition.
