5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting with Japanese fabrics
I loved this book because the auther works beautiful fabrics in a way I would so love to do. It is so well illustrated and informative that I feel I can do great things without all the gadgets usually associated with quilting and I love to sew by hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful
Kitty Pippin's knowledge and years of experience really make this book a treasure. Her teaching skills also shine forth in writing clear directions with lots of patterns to enlarge or copy.
This style of quilting, away from traditional western patterns and excessive machine-fast construction, appeals to me.
As soon as the book arrived, I sat down and gobbled half of it up! Marvelous photos-- I wish there were more detailed close-up shots of the finished quilts.Design ideas are coming together for me since reading it. The encouraging directions are a valuable and practical part of "Quilting with Japanese Fabrics."And, you can also use non-Japanese fabrics.
I am very happy to add this book to my growing Japanese quilting collection. Also in my "collection" of two books is Susan Briscoe's Japanese block quilting book (See my glowing review.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information for a small price
I am a beginning quilter, and often find the information in quilt books to make assumptions that I know how to figure yardage, etc.

This book gives 8 pages in the introduction explaining with illustrations varioustechniques and preferences in terms of equipment.

There are 3 chapters inthis book. The first chapter is titled:Short Cuts to Short StripPiecing.I found this chapterto be helpful, adding information notincluded in other tips & tricks books I've read. This has decreased myquilt making time on other projects.

Chapter 2:Striep Piecing to FormLog Cabin Designs. This chapter shows placement for many log cabin blocks, including flickering shadows, butterfly, sunshine & shadow, square withring around, straight furrow, and streak of lightening, as well asnon-square shaped versions.

Chapter 3:Making String Designs on a ShapedBase.Includes designs such as:Old fashioned string quilt, Amishshadowed square, Chevron, string pyramids, spider web, string star.

Ihave yet to make any of the quilts, but have used the text to help me inother quilts I have made.Currently, I am eagerly saving my scraps andstrings from other quilts, in anticipation of making one of the quilts inthis book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I'm new at long arm quilting and these designs are wonderful. There are 3 levels of patterns. The first group is a single continuous pattern, the second group consist of 2 lines and the third of three lines. As i advance in perfection of technique I will move to the next group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jump start your creativity1
This book was just what I was looking for to jump start my creativity with my Mega Quilter short arm machine.I am limited to 5" or 6" designs
and I wanted something a little more complex than simple curves and waves.
This book has 126 pages of designs. The line drawings range from complex scrolls to very simple hearts. There are even more complex tripple color drawings to create those elaborate designs you see made on the long arm machines.I copy the designs onto long narrow strips of paper to create my pantagraphs that I follow with a lazer pointer. This is a wonderful book and well worth the Amazon price!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I got what I was looking for it was very detailed and helpful for the price and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have the book, but know this...
Study & you will quickly see that Feathers are THE MOST common quilting motif, next to the grid-line quilting. If you don't agree, then know that they are certainly up in the top 5!Feathers are so versatile and beautiful, formed in the image of bird plumage or if you will, in the shape of a teardrop - both of which are found throughout the entire history of quilting.
Feathers are used for filling space, in your blocks, setting triangles or sashings. You can quilt them in borders-long straight strips, make them undulate & twist, round or oval, place a half, quarter or heart shaped feather motif in your block, in a corner or just draw one on the label you sew onto the back of your quilt for a beautiful continuation of the effect.
No matter where or how you twist, turn, stretch or shrink your feather motifs, once you have perfected this teardrop shape, the possibilites are endless.Try it-you won't be disappointed!

While I hope to own this book someday(when the price comes down a bit)I want those who can just buy it without money concerns to know this. *From a quilter who studies quilting history non-stop, is the local guild librarian & webmaster.Owns a personal quilt related library of over 2,000 magazines & books. I like to pass on tips that will stay with you, not just be good for one or two times. Feathers are here to stay. They have endured the test of time, design and have held fast. You cannot go wrong with this-or any other well written instruction book on how to draw/design feather quilting motifs.

The seven nicely designed step-by-step quilt projects include log cabin, four-patch, saw tooth star, and sampler designs. A kids' quilt gallery features works by the six young quilters--both girls and boys--who collaborated on the book with Anderson, and quotes from the kids and photos of them at work on their quilts provide even more encouragement to other young quilters. --Amy Handy Book Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase
I purchased this book for my 13yo niece; it was the best buy ever. It is easy to read & the projects are very easy to understand & complete.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skimpy
I love Alex but the book is a little too skimpy with only five blocks to choose from.

I am also surprised at the lack of photos on hand quilting.Hand quilting really needs way more illustrations and not just on burying the knot!Even the section on hand tying lacks illustrations!! If you put it in the book, you should show us how it is done so we can see it.A book on the basics should include the basics!

It is still a good book, but after having both books by Barbara Eikmeier I can say it isn't the best book I have seen on the subject.A nice addition after you have the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool
Alex Anderson is among the best in teaching quilting methods. This book is a great teaching tool for children of all ages. Alex really explains each step in detail and I learned some new tricks myself. She stresses safety while working with children as well as self-expression through fabric choices. 4-0 out of 5 stars 60 Machine Quilting Patterns
The patterns are wonderful, they are just what a person is looking for to make a template from for quilting. They are just what I was looking for. When it come to quilting patterns for a quilt top it is hard not to find what your looking for, you will find that you will use this book over and over again.

Thanks so much for looking

4-0 out of 5 stars definitely worth the price
i can agree with some of the other reviewers that these are not necessarily the most stunning machine quilting patterns available (for stunning, try joyce mori's books, the newest of which includes continuous line designs).

however, there is a nice balance of traditional, contemporary, and cutesy patterns, and the bonus of directional arrows for some of the patterns so that the quilter doesn't have to waste time tracing the correct pathway. these patterns may not be useful for an heirloom quilt, but they will be a great convenience for baby and childrens' quilts which are expected to disintegrate eventually. some are shown in one or two combinations and directions to demonstrate how they could be changed.

any beginner who works her way through these designs will definitely be ready for any machine quilting she wants. more experienced quilters will be able to find useful patterns and ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning book for machine quilting
I've been making quilts--or rather quilt tops--for years. This affordable book gave me the info I needed to plunge into machine quilting.I just did my first design tonight and am very pleased with the results. There are probably books with more patterns and nicer patterns out there, but if you are just beginning, this book will tell you what you need to know and give you some patterns to start with at an unbeatable price. You can then experiment with this little volume and invest in more expensive books when you have "gotten the hang of it" and know which types of patterns you want more of. My appetite has been whetted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
You may not use all of the designs; however, at this price, who cares. The patterns are easy to sew and are easy to transfer.Good combination of styles. This book has something for any beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional yes but not pretty
Yes the quilting designs are tradtional but they are not pretty
and they are very hard to do. (Harder than this beginner could manage at least :-(Instead I would recommend their other book, Amish Machine Quilting Patterns, which is just superb but is not a complete replacement for this one.

The best thing in both books is the intro of how to package, hold and transfer the designs.Great ideas here. What is particularly special about this one though is that it is very good in giving you projects on building your skills. These sections could be invaluable (they helped me with my regular sewing) and should not be skipped.(The Amish book does not have the same skill builder section. )

So this book is a mixed bag and had the designs been prettier I would have scored it higher particularly because of the skills section, but I consider the beauty aspect rather important. This is rather subjective so look at this book and see what you need more. For the price it's a great tutorial. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for the price
These aren't awe-inspiring quilting designs; I doubt you'll say Wow even once. But there are more quilting designs here than in the "60 machine quilting designs" book (which I also own), and they all seem useful and, well, *nice*. The price is right, too, so I'm glad I bought it.

Do note that there are relatively few border designs. Most of the designs are square or round.

Still, this is a decent addition to your library. And at its low price, it'll probably help you fill out an order to get free shipping!

4-0 out of 5 stars Quilting patterns
This is a good basic book for quilting patterns. It doesn't go much beyond traditional patterns, but it is definitely a good resource to have.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Resource Worth Purchasing
Do you Quilt? Then this is a quilt design resource for you. From hand to machine these designs and the number of designs is a MUST for a Quilters library.

I have looked through this book throughly. It seems like a well done, organized book with great pictures and diagrams. So much helpful information. This has the best explaination of freezor paper applique that I have seen and even shows a couple of ways to get the paper out.The other books I have do not even mention how to get it out.I am new to quilting and need to be led by the nose and this book seems to be a great reference.Has lots of good pictures of quilting designs and I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in quilting.

In the description given of the book I thought there would be more illustrations shown in the book of the progressive steps and tools needed

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic book
A good basic book for anyone wanting to learn to hand quilt.Lots of pictures and very clear directions. The pictures are mainly black and white but it does not detract from the effectiveness of the various lessons.

I learned a few tricks that helped me to understand some of the things I was doing incorrectly and it has helped to improve my skills.

I need to hand quilt and this book was the ticket for me.Patterns are supplied as well as taught.Very descriptive - love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I love quilting, although I have only been learning the art for the past year.Quilting does not have a tradition in my family -- and this book was the wonderful teacher I had, since I did not have family who could teachme.

This book walks through step by step the process of"no-stress" hand quilting. From preparing the fabric, thecontroversey of knots in patchwork, to small projects to work on.Awonderful reference book for the beginning quilter, like myself (and withtechniques that could also help more advanced quilters). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Quilting Bible
I love it.It is easy to follow and answers the most basic questions in easy to understand language. The pictures are clear and easy to follow. Well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Reference Book
If you want detail for every step of the quilting process, this is the book for you.It tells you what size needle to use for piecing vs. quilting; type of thread; types of batting; fabric quality; stitch length; how to determine the grain of the fabric; how to press seams; how to assemble a quilt; quick tips for cutting and sewing; how to make borders; the best way to fold and store a quilt; how to create articles other than a bed quilt (purse, tote bag, place mats, pillow covers, table runner, clothing); what equipment you need; how to organize your work space; how to move a full-size quilt through your machine.I took my highlighter and went crazy. It could be a bit daunting for a beginner so I would pair this book with Marsha McCloskey's "Quick Classic Quilts" (for traditional quilts) or with Margaret Rolfe's "A Quilter's Ark" (for contemporary foundation quilts with animal designs). They have much abbreviated instructions that would be easier to follow for a first-time quilter. Then I would use "The Quilting Bible" as a reference to make sure I understood the techniques to get truly professional results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent sewing reference from Singer!
I think this book is great!I borrowed a friend's, and I just can't give it back!I have done some quilting before, but have learned so much more from this book.Great photographs - and very helpful information.I highly recommend this book for any quilter!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!
I am a complete newbie to quilting...in fact, I haven't even made one yet.I read through this entire book and felt so overwhelmed and lost at the same time.I feel it is a bit over a newbie's head but probably excellentfor a person who has quilted before. It has beautiful photos of variousquilting patterns and is written in a very concise manner.I am onlydisappointed in the fact that I would consider a "bible" to bebasic enough for anyone.I am going to purchase another bookinstead...called "Quilts, quilts, quilts The complete Guide toQuiltmaking" by Diana McClun.Everyone I know who quilts hasrecommended it to me. ... We gave my daughter a sewing machine for Christmas, along with a few how-to-sew books. This is probably my favorite. All of the projects are cute, and we have done a few already. One of the best things about this book is how basic it is.If you are an adult and want to learn the basics of quilting (which many adult books seem to assume that you already learned as a child), this would be a great resource.I'm looking forward to learning more about quilting with my daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quilting confidence
Follow-the-line-quilting Designs Volume Two: Full-size Patterns for Blocks And Bordersis a quick way to get started on your quilting. The full-sized pattern allows you to "try it out" by laying it on your quilt for fit, but it also can be "resized" (by eye or copier) to fit your space.I found her diagrams with numbers to be extremely helpful.Once I finger-traced a few times, I was all set. Clipping the template where I could see it allowed me to visually track.(I do free motion quilting and use her patterns as a starting point.)I especially liked her block and corner motifs which accompany each border. Finally, by meandering her border designs, you can create an "all-over" design. This is a great resource. My only "complaint" is that I wish the box were a bit larger, as once the templates are unfolded, they do not fit back into the box.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners beware
As a quilting newbie, I bought Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs Volume Two hoping it might help me get started with machine quilting. While this packet of full-size quilt designs does come with a booklet offering an introductory guide to quilting, I needed something more basic still. Fortunately, the author recommends an in-depth guide for beginners like me (Maurine Noble's Machine Quilting Made Easy!). Once I've absorbed the information there, I look forward to experimenting with Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs. And if there's a volume three, I'd suggest the publishers include small-scale versions of the designs in the booklet so users can preview them without having to shuffle through the loose-leaf pattern sheets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Patterns
A great, easy to read and understand resource. Lots of easy to follow patterns with good, clear explanations on how to adapt them for projects. A good way to begin to quilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the Line super easy
The designs in this collection are so easy to follow.
Direction for sewing are clearly shown and the designs are truely wonderful. Many of my quilts have had extra quilting added since the purchase of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Finishing Touch
What a great concept for do it yourself quilt finishers. These patterns are the perfect way to top off your quilting projects whether you are a machine, hand, or long arm machine quilter. The patterns can be custom sized by enlarging or reducing them to fit your own quilt's size blocks and borders. This product offers a variety of patterns and it is especially helpful that the patterns show numbered lines and arrows to get you sewing in the proper continuous line. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky quilting history
This is a quirky little book full of newspaper excerpts about quilting. The best part is the background printing on each page which is a close-up of original fabrics used in the featured quilts. A lovely book to go back to and browse over coffee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of old newspaper snippets about quilts
This book was enjoyable, but got to be a little redundant after awhile.I loved the photographs of the antique quilts and quilt tops.A good read, then pass it on to the next quilter you know who is interested in quilt history.I don't consider this a book I would read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing together closeup images and close up news reports
From the beginning of the 20th century, through 2 World Wars, the Great Depression, the Great Society, the quilt revival, and continuing into the 21st century, quilters have searched their local newspapers, national magazines and books for new patterns and mention of quilts, quilt shows and famous quilters.

In Ms Reich's beautiful new book we will read news of noteworthy quilts and quilters of the 19th century directly from local newspapers of the times.Especially newsworthy were quilts made from "gazillions" of tiny pieces of fabric, painstakingly cut apart and then resewn together in set patterns. It is obvious to this reader that as the 19th century advanced the men who wrote those little filler blurbs became less and less amazed at the feat, and more and more incredulous at why anyone would even attempt such a thing as cutting fabrics into tiny pieces only to sew them back together again into gorgeous patterns. We quilters know why, and so does Ms Reich.

The photos that accompany the text, both in closeup of the fabrics used and the quilts seen as a whole, are incredibly clear and true as to color. Those fabrics are as packed with mouth-watering goodness as a good bar of dark semi-sweet chocolate, and are just as satisfying. In addition the short news articles are often good for a chuckle. This book gives joy on many levels, and as a new addition to the history of quilting is invaluable. ... This is a wonderful book that really got my creative juices going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty quilt projects using fusible machine applique
There are a lot of quilt books out there, so I was pleased to come across this one with a wonderful variety of designs. As someone who has many different types of projects going at once, and needs a refresher on the basics when I pick one up, I found the instruction and format provided excellent! Being a seamstress, I admit I was drawn to the dress design on the cover, but I found some other fun designs inside as well.

The book is very nicely laid out with beautiful and helpful photos.Basic Instruction is provided at the front, with the detailed quilt projects following. Like many quilting books, the focus is on piecing and putting the quilt together, so, while tool basics and some illustrations are included, the reader is directed to other sources if more information is needed on quilting techniques. Not being an experienced quilter, I was hoping for a little more information on this aspect of the quilt, but (at least for the dress quilt I focused on) the authors chose to leave the quilting choice up to the reader. The photos helped, though!

This book is one that inspired me to do more appliqué and to try the machine technique. The authors' introduction about their family sewing experiences was enjoyable reading.
