Seeing as the subtext of this column is to avoid writing about the nurses strike, it's only fitting that the first item deal with another havoc-wrecking labor dispute the theatre technicians walk-out at Place des Arts in Montreal. While as yet no one has argued that the curtain-pullers and spotlight gunners at Montreal's premier theatre provide essential services, the dispute is making the producers of PdeA shows, such as Les Miserables , well, miserable. If the strike is not settled well before the musical's August 3 opening date, Les Miz will have to find another venue not easy in a city chock-a-block with summer spectacles or cancel its lucrative Montreal run.

The company is made up of singers and dancers who are all from the greater Quebec region. The musical and artistic directors are Diane Lapierre and Marie Valliere. The Children's Chorus of the V'La l'Bon Vent School was created in September 1999. Its principal objective is to hand down customs, traditions, and values to the youth of Quebec. CLF is delighted to present a taste of Quebec's culture for this year's General Assembly.

I believe that the luxury of a Québecois culture and language would be the first things to be compromised after independence. Canada has protected the uniqueness of Québec, and it is that very uniqueness which will be in jeopardy if they are to nurture a new country in a hostile economic world. Only France would have the patience to deal (in the French language) with an independent and chauvinist Québec. Other countries would be completely insensitive to their "uniqueness". Canada's committment to the protection of Québec has no less than enshrined it as a non-American culture in North America. Québec would be forced to deal with the real world through a linguistic and cultural black market, if it wanted to maintain the guise of being truly French. Bottom line: Québec would be for sale "the morning after", and it may well discover that its previously abundant resorces are no longer within its new borders. For sale, with very little to sell but its unique culture, a tourist destination, a cultural curiosity, a neurotic "Disneypays"...masters of their own house, but at what cost? This years institute will be held in Quebec from June 22 to June 30. This professional development study tour, which will be conducted entirely in French, will focus on cultural and natural borders, and the artificiality of the U.S.-Canada boundary. It is sponsored by the Northeast National Resource Center on Canada, which includes the University of Maine, University of Vermont, and Plattsburgh State University in New York. This institute for U.S. teachers of French will offer a unique combination of academic presentations and seminar-level discussions, as well as tailored briefings by site curators and interpreters, environmental scientists, historians and folklorists. The Institute will begin and end in Montreal, and will be based in Quebec City. Participants will travel daily to nearby sites and will spend three final days in the Tadoussac and Charlevoix Regions. The itinerary will include exploring the unique resources of the Saguenay-Tadoussac Marine Park, visiting four historical sites associated with the Amerindian presence, as well as the Chauvin Fur Trading Post in Tadoussac. Participants will also travel through the Charlevoix Region to meet authentic informants and sample the breathtaking landscape that inspired Quebecs rich oral literature.

Maine Acadians' French ancestors settled during the 1600s in what is now the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Maine. Both France and England claimed this territory. In 1755 the English government deported thousands of French neutrals from present-day Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, then known as Acadia. Spurred by the Acadians' refusal to strengthen their pledge of allegiance to the British Crown, the authorities shipped most of them to British colonies. Some fled to Quebec. Others, today's Cajuns, sought a new start in Louisiana. The majority maintained their Acadian identity. During the 1780s Acadians settled Malecite homelands in the Saint John Valley, and here they were joined by settlers from the St. Lawrence River valley. The National Park Service aids local efforts at cultural conservation in the Saint John Valley via the Maine Acadian Heritage Council, an association of historical societies, cultural clubs, towns, and museums that work together to perpetuate Maine Acadian culture.

Located in Woonsocket's historic Market Square , The Museum of Work and Culture tells the story of French Canadian immigrants who left Quebec to come to work in the mills and factories of Woonsocket. Visitors begin their tour at a rural Quebec farm house and journey through the work day world of Woonsocket's residents from the early twentieth century to the present. On the shop floor of a textile mill, from the front porch of a three family tenement, in church, in school, in the union hall, visitors are immersed in a narrative of the working class in America. Operated by the Rhode Island Historical Society , the museum includes six walk through displays, two movies, many interactive audio presentations and hundreds of photographs. A predominate theme of the museum is the transformation immigrants undergo in "becoming American". Major exhibits include: Quebec Farm House (around 1870) - Life in rural Quebec. Church of the Precious Blood Living and Working to New Rhythms - a film about the transition to wage labor.
