5-0 out of 5 stars A Reasoned Attempt to Mitigate Impending Tragedy
The late Thomist philosopher Jacques Martitain (1882-1973)was a neo-Scholastic thinker who converted to Catholicism in 1906. His book titled SCHOLASTCISISM AND POLITICS was published in 1940 just after W.W. II started and before this war became a global tragedy. Maritain offered possible solutions to the tragic events in 1940, but he accurately predicted the future of Europe would get worse before it ever improved.

Martian analyised the rise of Italian Fascism, German National Socialism, the Soviet Worker's "Paradise." Maritain knew that totalitarianims was "the order of the day," but he accurately predicted that totalitarianism under whatever political label would not last in spite of the prevailing view to the contrary. He also made interesting observations and criticisms of Logical Positivism and what Maritain called the philosophy of Fruedianism.

Maritain argued that the police state apparatus under totaltitarianism was "unnatural." He considered the ideas of German National Socialism regarding the "Volk" would lead to what he called a "biological inferno." Maritian was critical of the Soviet system and the ideology of Marsixm and Big Communism. Maritain stated that excessive concern of materialism would lead to a political and social system that was oppressive and lethal to those who were ruled in such a system. Material equality meant that no one was happy.

Maritain made an interesting disctinction between authority and power. Maritian stated that authority came from wisdom, knowledge, character, an honorable moral code, etc. Those whoheld such authoritiy and should have power if only because they couldexercise politcal power wisely and justly. Power without just authority led to tyranny which Maritian, in accordance with St. Thomas Aquinas (1275-1274)said was unjust. In fact St. Thomas Aquinas stated that an unjust law was no law at all as such a law lead men to do evil in spite of "God's Will." However, Martain, in accordance with St. Thomas Aquinas comments re tyranny, stated that rebellion and revolution could lead to worse tyranny which modern revolutions have vindicated.

Maritain also diagnosed Rousseau's (1712-1778)political thinking very effectively. Maritian critisized Rousseau's concept of "The General Will" due to the fact that such a concept could lead to more intolerant tyranny "in the name of the people." One could ask whose General Will. Maritain raised the question of how those in power were so smart as to know the General Will. Maritain stated that such a system based on "The General Will" would lead to the more oppressive tyranny than that which previously existed. One can understand that 20th. century totalitarian rulers and party leaders ruled in the "Name of the People," and political dissents were crimes "Against the People." One can read Henrik Ibsen's (1828-1906)play titled AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE to grasp this phenomena.

Maritain also did a good job in his treatment of Proudhon's (1809-1865)views of anarchism. Maritain gave Proudhon credit for latter's criticism of economic and political dislocation, corruption, greed, etc. But Maritian offered intelligent comment of Proudhon's theory of anarchism. Maritian stated that for Proudhon's "system" to work, men would have to be ideally suited for such a "system" which Maritain wisely observed was impractical. Maritain knew that men would probably degenerate into "tribalism" and then power politics given over 6,000 years of recorded history. Maritian knew that political power and civil liberties were in a delicate balence.

Maritain was critical of the Logical Positivists who basically argued that only physical reality which could be quantified and measured mathmatically has philosophical justification. As Maritain stated and as this reviewer mentioned in another review, abstractions and ontology (the nature of being)are also realities. Love, hate, good, evil, justice, etc. are realities as much as physical reality. For Maritain, reason as enshrined by the Catholic Church and St.Thomas Aquinas helped men know and appreciate abstract concepts. Maritain made a good point when he reminded the Logical Positivists that their mathematical and scientific symbols used to justify their thinking originated as abstract symbols that originally did not have mathematical or scientific significance.

Maritain also was critical of Freudianism when it was turned into philosophy. Maritain accepted that psychology and psychiatry were useful to help overcome unreasonable fears and neurosis. However when what Maritian called Freudianism became philosophy, there was a serious problem. Basically, Maritian contended that when Freudianism as opposed to psychiatry was made into philosophy, philosophy was in turn reduced to instincts, unconscious motives, sex drive, etc. These are the same basic instincts of the animal kingdom, but men develop beyond that.

Maritain also had an interesting section on "freedom." Using St. Thomas Aquinas' reasoning, Maritian wrote that animals are free only if not caged, but they had no free will. Plant and animal life are bound by environment and instinct and cannot plan for ultimate ends. As St. Thomas Aquinas reasoned, men aspire to ultimate happiness which both Aquinas and Maritain argue is God, the Supreme Being, etc. For Maritain, Ultimate Reality or whatever term one may want to use is based on men's choice, reason, logic, comtemplation, etc.

Aside from abstract reasoning, Maritain wrote about what some call Catholic Action. One must realize that in 1940 when this book was written, Europeans and to a lesser degree Americans suffered from the Great Depresion. Catholic Action advocates had to renew efforts to help those in need while avoiding the totalitarian temptations of materialiam. Maritian argued that those involved in Catholic Action had to remember that their efforts of compassion and charity originated in God,Catholic teaching, etc. and not due to political lures and programs. At the time, this was a difficult dilemma for Catholics.

SCHOLASTICISM AND POLITICS was originally published by Image Books and the Macmillan Company in 1940. The book had three printings by 1941 and was again republished in 1960. Jacques Maritain could have emphasized the misery faced in Europe and in these United States more than he did so readers could have more insight to this historical period. Those who may be so interested can get a more detailed analysis in Keynes'THE ECONOMIC CONSEUQENCES OF PEACE and Keynes' REVISION OF THE TREATY. Yet, discerning readers can appreciate this book and know that a few men actually thought of better concepts and more intelligent appraisals of totalitarianism and the possible outcome of World War II. This is a good book. ... Read more

Product Description
Without question, the greatest storehouse of information on Pennsylvania is found in the 138 volumes of the Pennsylvania Archives, published in ten series between 1838 and 1935. The first sixteen volumes of the Pennsylvania Archives, forming a distinct series known as Colonial Records, are a treasure trove in themselves and represent one of the cornerstones of early American record sources. Never properly indexed, the sixteen volumes lock away priceless information on the early inhabitants of Pennsylvania, the first ten volumes covering Minutes of the Provincial Council, 1683-1775 and the last six covering Minutes of the Supreme Executive Council, 1777-1790. Aware of the unfulfilled potential of the Colonial Records, Dr. Mary Dunn of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, a dedicated educator and award-winning teacher, compiled her own manuscript indexes to the series. We are pleased to offer Dr. Dunn's indexes to the sixteen volumes of Pennsylvania's Colonial Records, which have now been consolidated into a single alphabetical sequence by Mrs. Martha Reamy. This remarkable index names some 50,000 men and women who played a role in the early history of Pennsylvania. To explain the significance of the Colonial Records series and in particular its publishing history and unique contents, the work also includes an illuminating foreword by Jonathan Stayer of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration began interviewing former slaves for their side of history, a project that would become one of the largest oral research projects on slavery. Forty years later, George P. Rawick compiled the thousands of interviews into the multi-volume series The American Slave. Published by Greenwood Press in the 1970s, the slave narratives have provided a valuable resource for historians and researchers, but they lacked a comprehensive name index. This volume indexes the slaves according to where they lived (as opposed to where they were interviewed), enabling researchers to locate slaves by state, county, or region, as well as by their master's name, their age, and the interviewer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Long-overdue, makes Rawick accessible (finally!)
With the publication of Howard E. Potts, A Comprehensive Name Index forthe American Slave (1997), one formidable obstacle has been removed fromresearchers searching for slave interviews from particular localities orinterviews that relate to particular persons. The 42 volumes of Rawick'scollection of slave narratives has daunted researchers because of lack ofan index.Previously, the only way to find all interviews that related toa particular geographic area (for instance) was to read all 42 volumes, page by page. This book presents versions of the same database, sorted bydifferent fields, including name of interviewee, name of interviewer,county/counties and states in which the interviewee lived during slavery, name of former owner/s, age and birth year of interviewee. This index isa very serviceable tool for historians who may be writing local history andwho wish to gather testimony from a particular locale; likewise, biographers of particular slaves and slaveowners will find the bookindispensible.Researchers like myself who always pine for more will wishthat the compiler had indexed the names of ALL persons mentioned in theslave narratives, not just the interviewees and their former owners.Thereis still no subject index for this huge collection.Nevertheless, Pottshas provided the only practical key to an indispensible set of documents ofAmerican history. ... From the supplier: Controversies continue to hound the calculation and uses of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the most well-known inflation indicator in the country. The CPI is blamed for overstating inflation rate, resulting in a federal deficit and prompting Federal Reserve Board Chmn. Alan Greenspan to suggest to lower it by one percentage point. Speaker Newt Gingrich agreed with the idea, but some Democratic senators denounced political pressure concerning the CPI and called for careful study. The dispute offers two lessons, namely, that there is no 'perfect' index and that politics should be kept out of good statistics.

Although the term is generally applied to behavior within civil governments, politics is observed in all human group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions. Politics consists of "social relations involving authority or power" and refers to the regulation of a political unit, and to the methods and tactics used to formulate and apply policy. Political science (also political studies) is the study of political behavior and examines the acquisition and application of power.
