More than a picture book
What a great perspective on Nebraska. I lived there for two years as a young girl while my father was on a missile site and wanted to try going back without physically being there. The pictures are wonderful but the words are what really capture Nebraska.The humor was LOL and the Authors' gift for taking you into the photo gives the reader a great respect for the people of Nebraska. This book did take me back to Nebraska.Loved it

A Book That Really Shows What Nebraska Is All About
I moved away from Nebraska about 3 years ago to pursue opportunities elsewhere, and shortly after moving I purchased this book.Joel Sartore is a photographer for National Geographic and very active in local enviromental issues so I knew beforehand this would be an excellent testament to my home...and he did not dissapoint.

Coming from a rural place I did not miss the photos of the Old Settler's Picnic and June Jubilee...both major festivals in the Saline/Filmore county area.In one of the pics there was even a girl that was in my high school class, front and center!However, Joel didn't cover just my area of the state but the entire state.His photos evoke the culture and natural beauty of the state that go way beyond proving to folks from the coasts that we are more than just rednecks living on a flat plain.

An Incredible Picture Book for Nebraskans
In a word - gorgeous. The author - Joel Sartore - is a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine, so you know that the photography is going to be something special and it is. Sartore travels throughout Nebraska, taking pictures of everything - an endangered beatle, rodeos and the cowboys that compete in them, pheasant hunters and fisherman, and Carhenge.
It's is a book that will those of us who live outside the state homesick for Nebraska. It is a reminder of Nebraska's true spirit - it's people. People who live in a state that's dismissed as uninteresting by most, but who make up for any perceived geographical shortcomings by being interesting themselves
Sartore honors his craft, as he captures those traits in the pictures of Nebraskans throughout this book. There isn't a lot of writing, just enough to describe what's happening with each photograph.
"Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky is a perfect Christmas present for that Husker fan who already has everything colored red. The price is right (less than $15 at Amazon, click the link above).

It's the kind of book you can pass around amongst your family at Christmas time, and I guarantee that they'll spend a few hours pouring over the pages. Well worth the money just to have around, even if you're not going to give it as a present. Leave it on your coffee or end table - someone will pick it up and it will provide hours of quiet entertainment for the holiday season.

Seriously, you don't want to miss this one.

Fabulous for non-Nebraskans too
Joel's work is extraordinary and will be appreciated by even those whohave never set foot in the state of Nebraska.It will definitely make youwant to visit, though!

An Important Photographer
Joe Deal has made a highly significant contribution to the world of landscape photography over the past 40 years, and this is his latest collection of works. This book is a "must" for anyone serious about photography.

Horizontally plain
Looking through these photographs reminded me of what Walter Prescott Webb wrote in his fascinating and definitive book on the Plains, that the early European settlers came upon this huge area and were initially stopped in their tracks.They were used to hills, rivers, trees, woods, villages and neighbors within a reasonable walking distance.The horizontal Plains were an alien concept to many of them but the hardy ones pressed on, settled and then endured the searing heat, long winters, loneliness and a wind that could blow for weeks.He quotes Beret Hansa, the heroine of Ole Rolvaag's 'Giants of the earth': "Why, there isn't even a thing that one can hide behind!"

The fifty-one photos certainly capture the look and timelessness of the Plains though the folk who live there see it in color and I wonder why these photos are black and white?Surely color photography long ago shed its strictly commercial image.Color would certainly help I think because I found these photos rather dull overall.The vision is predominately horizontal and passive though there are several photos that feature a rock formation and even a tree or two to break up the horizon.Any man-made activity is totally absent.

Deal writes in his Introduction that half the counties of the Great Plains now have, on average, fewer than two people per square mile.An interesting point because, as he says, this is approaching the definition of wilderness and his photos could justifiably show a bland landscape because it is reality but I just don't find it a landscape that I'll want to look at too often on these pages.

The book's almost square format, beautiful printing (with a 200 screen) paper and elegant design are the quality one would expect from the Center for American Places.There are two essays, front and back of the portfolio pages and a slightly unfortunate editorial slip on a spread with two maps in color but no in-depth captions to explain their significance.The map's reference in the text is none too helpful either.

North Dakota???????
descent photography,I feel as though if you are going to say "Jim Dow in North Dakota" the photos should be only from ND and not the surrounding states.If you are from ND you may not like it.

Northern Plains quietude
Jim Dow has done us all a favor with his remarkable book of photos.In the final chapter called Dreaming and Redemption he says `Those unfamiliar with North Dakota habitually say that it is cold, boring, flat, desolate and empty -- inadequate generalizations that simply don't hold up'.Just look through the 185 color photos several times and the Peace Garden State will grow on you and although none of the photos contain people you really feel their presence.

One of the strengths of the book is the editorial flow.Rather than just run page after page of photos here the work is divided into eight chapters each with a page introduction.Some are quite short like the first one: Views ofNorth Dakota, which surprisingly is made up of twelve shots of the inside walls of the state penitentiary where bad guy Charles Olive, murderer and sign painter created a series of murals showing the North Dakota landscape.The Marking the Land chapter has thirty-seven photos of man-made signs, rusting agricultural machinery (deliberately left as a mark on the landscape) and larger than life animal statues.Artists and Workplace chapter (sixty photos) features workshops, bars, retail interiors and commercial architecture.Religious Life (twenty photos) reflects the diverse nature of grave markers and church buildings found in the State.

Although I have a paperback copy (2500 printed according to the imprint)I think it could be considered a book of coffee table proportions, well printed in an impressively fine screen and unusual for a photo book it has an index, too.I would only fault this book of photos in the way captions have been handled.Like many photo books they are at the back with a thumbnail and page number when nearly all the text would easily fit under the relevant images.

I think Jim Dow's impressive photos reveal a lot more of North Dakota than the predictable cold, boring and flat cliché.

Bradford Washburn: Mountain Photography
I was looking for something different.The photographs are beautiful but they are mostly not of the mountain in which I was interested.

TERRIBLE COPY - FALLING APART - PAID VERY HIGH PRICE AND WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK.WHEN PURCHASED IT SAID IT WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Picture the mountains in all their glory...
This book is a marvelous record of mountain exploration and photography with photos that span a period of almost 70 years. This small collection representing much less than 1% of Washburn's photographs is a remarkable record of photography rivaling Ansel Adams or Vittorio Sella. Although the photos were originally taken to support his geological or surveying research or to provide guide shots for climbers, Washburn soon realized that he had a knack for taking photographs as art that were as good as any being produced by other photographers.

This book may be a disappointment for those who want expedition photographs as few of the photographs include people. Indeed, having a few more pictures of people would have warranted five stars. Yet, many of the pictures are aerial photographs so the lack of people in many is not surprising. What makes it ultimately worthwhile is the crispness of the pictures, the attention to details on the ridges and valleys of the mountains, the patterns revealed in the flow of glaciers, and so on.

One other point of interest is that this book was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2000 Banff Mountain Book Festival -- the only pure photography book to win that award.

A slight disappointment
After the exhiliration generated by Washburn's classic book on Denali, this one left me slightly disappointed. There are many exquisite photographs and a few truly great ones, such as the famous picture of climbers on the Doldenhorn (in the Bernese Alps). But on the whole there are just a little bit too many pictures of abstract geological features. These reveal a more scholarly side of Washburn's art: interesting to round out our view on this great artist, but less captivating than the epic mountain pictures. Also, there is an appendix with a detailed account of Washburn's career, with many little inset pictures of people he worked with (Barbara Washburn being the most prominent amongst them). I would have liked to see many more of these pictures and at a size more amenable to detailed study. A final point of criticism on this book concerns the interview with Washburn by the editor: it is very revealing but way too short! I would have guessed that Decaneas would have been able to extract much more material from all the conversations he has had with Washburn in the final years of his life. So, it's a nice book to have in the library, but Decaneas missed an opportunity to put together an absolute classic. Pity.

Pretty amazing
The product was in great condition. Most of the pictures are really amazing, but others could definitely be better. Also, I feel like some major places are missing. Other than that, it is pretty incredible.

It's wonderful!
I saw this book at my daughter's home and I knew I wanted one.Since then I have been looking and trying to get it....and now I have it!It's so enjoyable to look at parts of the world I cannot visit at this time in life.How beautiful creation is!

Gorgeous!
The photos in this book are absolutely amazing!It is a beautiful and interesting book to put out on your coffee table with a variety of different illustrations.Sure, there's not a lot of text, but I think it's pretty clear that it's intended to be a coffee table-like picture book.

Amazing value for money
What amazing value for money this book is. Each page is full of the photo and the information and description is kept to a minimum so as not to spoil any part of the scenery. It reminds me how beautiful this planet is.I bought it for my nephew who is 11 years old. At school he learns about the world that we as humans have created - the history, the economics and the suffering. This book and its pictures will show him true natural beauty of places that humans have not spoilt and I hope for future adventures for his life as a young man. Amazon never fail to deliver quality. Workin' on the railroad.
The first thing you'll notice about this book is the shape, just over twelve inches wide by six and a half deep, just the right landscape size to show very long freight trains.This is not really a book for train fans though, photographers like the brilliant Greg McDonnell, Gary Benson or Gary Dolzall have produced much better train imagery but Andrew Cross uses freights to say something about the American landscape, the German photographer Lothar Baumgarten approached the subject in much the same way in his excellent book 'Carbon'

Most of the photos have part of a train in them, some are just of tracks in the country or suburbia.The seven sections cover southern California, Texas, Appalachia, Northeast, Midwest, Northwest and finally central California.I think the best photos are the ones taken in the west with an empty prairie where you can see six (or sometimes ten) diesels pulling a mile and a half long consist, either boxcars, trailer-on-flat-cars or monster unit coal trains.The section on central California is interesting because Cross shows the area around Tehachapi Loop (but unfortunately not the Loop itself, where freights circle and go over themselves) and the trains seem to merge into the landscape, even the eye dazzling Santa Fe's or the yellow Union Pacific diesels.Overall an interesting collection of photos that support the photographer's point that freight trains are an everyday part of the American scene.

The production of the book is worth commenting on, the shape is fine but the typography is rather quirky, the page numbers are presented as four numerals, 0084 or 0140 and the first page of the seven sections has the number filling the whole left hand page, the captions use arrows to show which photos they apply to even when the photo is on the next page.All this is a bit of designer whimsy and not really necessary in my view.

AMAZING book!

Too many words, not enough images
This book is more of a written history of street photography than a visual history.Too much space is given up to text, and there aren't enough images to satisfy.

Nevertheless, the book is an interesting read, or should I say an interesting skim.I skimmed through the text, stopping to read interesting bits here and there.Had those interesting bits been retained, much of the rest of the text eliminated and more images included, it would be a 5-star book.

One other comment is that the emphasis is on American street photography, to the point that some notable non-American street photographers are excluded completely.

A history of street photography described in both text and photos. The authors are well knowledged in the field and provide a very well layed out book that is enjoyable to read. A great coffee table book.

it's the photos...
BYSTANDER embraces the social & cultural history of street photography. It touches upon the works of master photographers, yet leaves out so much about the actual photographs.

Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.

It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.

When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.

BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.

well done...
first off, the authors do a fine job presenting to the reader an insightful history of street photography. they especially succeeded in explaining (or at least theorizing) how the various photographers came to create their respective photographic styles by finding sources of influence in modern art, architecture, and of course each other.
although there are other reviewers who believe the authors didn't give enough credit to hcb for shaping street photography into what it is today, it is important to note that even in the chapters which focus on the american photographers hcb is continuously cited as a major influence. just remember that this book is a history of street photography, not a bio of hcb!
i also agree with the reviewer who thought the photo placement within the book was a little inconvenient at times. but that minor problem does in no way detract from the overall value of such an insightful look at the history of street photography. enjoy! ... Read more

No one book can ever do Ireland Justice.

I have a large number of books about Ireland in my collection .While many are about history,and literature;I have many that are just "picture books" I have visited Ireland three times and while there are so many things that never cease to amaze me,the sights you encounter are spellbounding.
This book has to be one of the more unusual approaches to "photographing Ireland" that I have ever seen.
To start with, neither of the authors are Irish. Jan Morris who wrote the text is from Wales and Paul Wakefield ,who took the photographs is from Britian.Therefore it quite appropriate to say that this is Ireland as seen by outsiders.

On the dust jacket is this comment;

"Together,Paul Wakefield and Jan Morris have created a striking tribute to a country that is both exotic and uncertain,whimsical and mysterious." ..That they certainly did!!!
The book contains 75 photographs,that are quite unlike anything you normally come across in similar books.Many photogtaphs are quite melancholy and all but one or two were taken on sunless days.Most of these pictures are full page or larger.An interesting aspect of this book is that there is no corelation between the photographs and the text. Therefore one could just viev without reading.That would be a mistake;because the text is superb and written with insight and understanding.Some of the photographs would be more interesting if Wakefield had provided some details for them.
Many of the photographs are of such ordinary things that they prove the old adage that "Artists see where others only look". Beauty is everywhere,but it takes photographs like Wakefield's to show it to us.
This book was first published in 1990 and republished again in 1998. It is certainly worth the effort to search out and enjoy because it is definitely a different approach to photographing Ireland. ... Read more

Bring a "Transportation of Place" to your bookshelf
Transportation of Place, photographs by Andrea Robbins and Max Becher, is an exceptional collection of documentary photographs whereby Robbins and Becher record cultural conditions of simulation, mimesis, and re-enactments that occur due to political events, tourism, entertainment, and cultural longing. Their collaborative photos function as "surreal nonfiction" and demonstrate a lucid vision (as much as this is possible) of the growing global phenomenon of displacement, artifice, fabricated identity, and cultural confusion. Their work beautifully pinpoints conditions where simulated environments and personas become preferable to actual cultural or historical contexts. Robbins and Becher's photos of "places out of place" make it possible to imagine more clearly the consequences and complications of denying or subverting one's surroundings or identity. In addition their images give us insight into the global, postcolonial conditions enabling alienation, loss of identity, and loss of history of place.

German villages in Africa, "Old West" frontier towns in Spain, Wall Street in Cuba, New York in Vegas, people in Washington state altering local architecture and dress to become a Bavarian community, and people in Germany attempting to dress and live as Native Americans are just some of the interesting series presented by Robbins and Becher in this superb book. In addition, Transportation of Place includes excellent essays by Lucy Lippard and Maurice Berger. This book is a must-see/must-read for contemporary artists, photographers, art audiences, and anyone interested in travel, politics, or the humanities.

One photographic series presented in the book documents "Old Tucson" (an outdoor film stage set - turned tourist attraction) in Arizona. "Old Tucson", constructed in 1938, miles away from, and built after the actual Tucson, Arizona, is neither "old" nor "Tucson." There's A Place In France
These kid sized geographically fun fact books by Dyan are absolutely great!Every new addition in this series is absolutely captivating to my kids.The little history facts tucked into the simple poetry keep the reading light yet educational.Several pages even sparked conversations!I don't always see what my children see in their reading materials, but Dyan has seemingly found the magic formula for capturing their attention.There is a Seuss-like quality to the rhyming.And, the photography is not all about perfection... there is a distinctly unique and interesting perspective of each photographed subject matter (and an Eiffel addition to some!) which opens little minds, too.All around, this book is tremendously enjoyable!There's A Place In France, A Kid's Guide To Paris ...
