Excerpt: The Académie Royale de Danse was a French dance school founded by letters patent on the initiative of Louis XIV on 30 March 1661. The predecessor of the Académie royale de Musique (founded in 1669), the two institutions never merged and the dance school disappeared at the start of the 1780s. 13 in number, the school's teachers or "" formed part of the king's entourage and court and were, for the most part, simultaneously both dancers and musicians. It was this that motivated the fraternity of musicians of Saint-Julien to publish a virulent factum against the "" in 1664. This long , entitled , was signed by Guillaume Dumanoir, "violin player to His Majesty, one of the 25 members of his "grand' Bande", and also holder of the Office de Roy of the Instrument Players, and of the dance masters of France". The quarrel was settled in 1695, by a decree according the same rights to both parties. Although the object of the Academy was to reflect, analyze and normalize matters of dance, no document relating to its activity or to this theorization has survived. Little by little, recruitment of dancers into the royal entourage gave way to recruitment into the ballet-corps of the Opéra. This little by little altered the Academy's profile, making it and its members more dedicated to dance training alone. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15946392 ... Read more

Excerpt: Dramatens elevskola, i.e Kungliga Dramatiska Teaterns Elevskola, or in Eng: The Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school, was the acting school of Sweden's national stage, The Royal Dramatic Theatre, and for many years (1787-1964) seen as the foremost theatre school and drama education for Swedish stage actors. It was established in 1787 by the theatre and art loving King Gustav III and was for many years under the protection of the Swedish royal family. The school was originally founded in 1787. Previously, actors had been educated as personal students of individual actors at the theatre, but it was decided that a school was necessary for a more secure succession of the profession and to learn up children in the profession from the start from examples made by the continent. It is not mentioned much during its first years, but it is clear to have been active from the end of the year 1787. In 1788, it is called The Children's Theatre, and is noted to have performed a play for the king and the royal court. The school were apparently founded by order from the opera direction, and the students were from between the age 9-14. One the first students known were Lars Hjortsberg, who also performed at this occation and became one of the stars of Swedish theatre history. The school was organised in 1793 by Anne Marie Milan Desguillons and her spouse, two actors from the French Theatre in Bollhuset in Stockholm. The school was often called children's theatre, and the students was often used in small parts by the royal theatre and in student performances. The instructors were often acto...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7485365 ... Read more

Excerpt: Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts -The Teacher's Cottage, or Helmick House, built in 1916In the early 20th century, reports of widespread poverty and lack of education in Southern Appalachia gained the attention of religious and philanthropic organizations. Inspired by the settlement house movement that began in the previous century, these organizations established "settlement schools" in remote mountain communities to provide free education. In June 1910, former Pi Beta Phi Grand President Emma Harper Turner spoke at the fraternity's national convention and suggested the fraternity establish such a school as a memorial for its 50th anniversary. The fraternity's National Alumnae Association authorized the school on June 30, and fraternity leaders initiated an extensive study to locate a mountain community that would most benefit from a new school. The U.S. Commissioner of Education suggested they establish such a school in Tennessee, and the Tennessee Department of Education identified Sevier County as having the fewest schools. An East Tennessee teacher, Mabel Moore, pointed the Pi Beta Phis to Gatlinburg then a tiny mountain hamlet at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains as the community most in need of a new school. In 1910, Pi Beta Phi Grand President May Lansfield Keller made the 17-mile (27 km) trek from Sevierville to Gatlinburg over what she called "the worst road in Tennessee" and verified that Gatlinburg was the best choice for the fraternity's first philanthropy. Nashville native Martha Hill was chosen as the school's first teacher, and classes bega...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24304365 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Peking Opera Schools were boarding schools located throughout Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, specialising in teaching Peking opera. The most well known of these schools are those that were based in Hong Kong during the 1950s and 60s, as many of the attending students subsequently embarked on successful careers in the Hong Kong film industry. In learning Peking opera, attending students developed skills in martial arts, acrobatics and tumbling, music and dance and performed these skills for audiences. The schools produced a generation of stunt performers, action choreographers, actors and film directors including some of the most famous stars of Hong Kong action cinema. Public interest in Peking Opera waned in the late 1960s and several of the schools were closed. Historically, pupils had been handpicked at a young age by a teacher (or sifu) and trained for a period of seven to ten years, on contract from their parents. As the teacher provided food and accommodation for the pupils during this period, they accrued a debt to the teacher that was later repaid through performance earnings. After 1911, training took place in more formally organised schools. Typically, students at these schools rose at five o'clock in the morning for exercises. The daytime would be spent learning the skills of acting and combat, and the senior students would perform in outside theatres in the evenings. If they made any mistakes during such performances, it was not uncommon for the entire group to be beaten with bamboo canes. Schools with less harsh training methods began to appear in 1930, but all schools were closed down in 1931 after the Japanese invasion. The modern schools, such as the China Drama Academy and the Spring and Aut... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=407414 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) A Dynamic Theatre School Offering a Wide Spectrum of Studies in Theatre Creation - was founded immediately after the Second World War, emerging from the need to educate theatre artists and artistic personalities capable of capitalizing on the creative conquests made in the first half of the twentieth century - when Czech theatre experienced one of its most significant apogees and bring them into contemporary theatrical consciousness. The founders of the school principally, Jií Frejka, a director, and set designer Frantiek Tröster, along with Miroslav Haller united their experiences from the avant-garde movement with a polished professionalism and pronounced pedagogical talent. During its sixty-year existence, the Theatre Faculty has consistently integrated new theatrical trends, developing a pluralistic educational environment where the most prominent personalities of Czech theatrical life teach in a variety of fields - from acting, directing, dramaturgy and drama theory, scenography and theatre management to more interdisciplinary disciplines, where theatre embraces authorial creation, philosophy and education. The backbone of the school is formed by two large departments, each of which reflects the diversity of todays theatre world the Department of Dramatic Theatre and the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre. The Department of Dramatic Theatre and the Department of Stage Design prepare students, above all, for the repertory theatre system itself primarily concerned with the inte...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15766625 ... Excerpt: The Royal Academy of Music in London, England, is a conservatoire, Britain's oldest degree-granting music school and a constituent college of the University of London since 1999. The Academy was founded by Lord Burghersh in 1822 with the help and ideas of the French harpist and composer Nicolas Bochsa and in 1830 was granted a Royal Charter by King George IV. It is a registered charity under English law. The Royal Academy of Music offers training from infant level (Junior Academy), with the senior Academy awarding the LRAM diploma, BMus and higher degrees to Ph.D. The former Graduate Diploma GRSM, equivalent to a university honours degree and taken by some students, was phased out in the 1990s. All undergraduates now take the University of London degree of BMus. Most Academy students are classical performers: strings, piano, vocal studies including opera, brass, woodwind, conducting and choral conducting, composition, percussion, harp, organ, accordion, guitar. There are also departments for musical theatre performance and jazz. The Academy collaborates with other conservatoires worldwide, including participating in the SOCRATES student and staff exchange programme. In 1991, the Academy introduced a fully accredited degree in Performance Studies, and in Septembe...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=218993 ... Read more

Higher education refers to a level of education that is provided by universities, vocational universities, community colleges, liberal arts colleges, institutes of technology and other collegiate level institutions, such as vocational schools, trade schools and career colleges, that award academic degrees or professional certifications. At the world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966, guarantees this right under its Article 13, which states that "higher education shall be made equally accessible to all, on the basis of capacity, by every appropriate means, and in particular by the progressive introduction of free education". ...
