Excerpt: St Paul's Catholic Comprehensive School and Performing Arts College - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The school was created in 1977 from the merger of two local Catholic schools - Evington Hall, the girls' grammar school that served the city and county; and Corpus Christi, the local secondary modern school. The current building includes the original Evington Hall building as well as several new wings built over the years. The new additions have made the school building roughly twice the size it was upon the school's foundation. The school celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2002, with an open day for alumni, hosted by students and staff. In 2003, the school attained specialist Performing Arts College status, and it enjoys excellent results in this field. St Paul's is a voluntary aided school, and as such receives a reduced amount of government funding. However, the school is equipped with modern computer facilities, a well-stocked library and a state-of-the-art performing arts department which includes a recording studio, drama suites, dance suites and a Drama Hall with a high stage and curtains. It was officially opened by Labour MPs Jim Knight (then-Minister of State for Schools) and Keith Vaz, MP for Leicester East. There is also a Catholic chapel on the premises, which features a plaque blessed by Pope John Paul II. Excerpt: Marryatville High School is a public state school in Adelaide, South Australia. It was founded in 1976 during the Don Dunstan era of South Australia and was formed out of the old Norwood Boys Technical High School. The school is situated on a large area of land in the eastern suburb of Marryatville, part of the City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters. First Creek cuts through the middle of the school grounds and large gum trees line the property. Marryatville High School on Kensington Road at Marryatville occupies part of Section 290, which was first leased from the South Australia Company and first settled in 1839. George and Sarah Brunskill leased the northern part of the section. The southern half was leased by the Reed family (the school's rear ovals are from this section). Apart from clearing and farming the land, The Brunskills soon set about producing bricks from the good quality clay they found on their property and built a fine two-storey house. Lack of capital led them to lease the house and build a cottage near the brickworks where Second Creek crossed the property. With the tightening of credit, in 1848 George passed the lease to twenty acres on the eastern side of his property to the bank in expiation of his debt. This land was subdivided and became the suburb of Marryatville. He also relinquished the lease on one acre fronting Kensington Road enabling it to be conveyed to the Anglican Church by the South Australia Company for the building of St Matthew's Church. George Brunskill formed the Adelaide and Suburban Building Society and he became a corn factor in Grenfell Street. On gaining the freehold to his land in 1850 at a cost of 250 pounds, George sold off part ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2310692 ... Read more

Excerpt: School for Creative and Performing Arts -Bill Dickinson (left) and Dr. Donald Waldrip at a Cincinnati Boy Choir performance on Fountain Square, c. 1974. Dickinson led the school from its founding in 1973 until 1991.The School for Creative and Performing Arts arose, in part, as a response to the recurring desegregation battles in the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In a 1965 civil rights suit, the city had prevailed when a federal judge had found that the schools were not intentionally segregated, but rather that "the racial composition of each school is simply a result of the racial composition of the neighborhoods which they serve." By 1971, Cincinnati's neighborhoods and schools had grown more segregated and the Supreme Court of the United States had upheld forced busing as a remedy for school segregation in other cities. Desiring to avoid such drastic remedies for Cincinnati, then newly appointed Superintendent Dr. Donald Waldrip pushed forward a program of alternative schools (or what would later be called magnet schools), "designed to calm the desires of parents for academic choice and to stem the demands of federal judges for court-ordered desegregation." The theory behind alternative schools was open enrollment: students could attend any alternative school they chose at no additional cost, so long as an even racial balance at the new school was maintained. "Students were admitted to these programs on a one-for-one basis (one white for one black) so far as possible." The School for Creative and Performing Arts was to become the first alternative school in what would become "one of the largest and most vigorous" magnet...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25456621 ... Excerpt: A drama school is a higher education college which specialises in the vocational teaching of drama (i.e. acting, musical theatre and technical theatre). Students at such a college are normally awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at the end of their studies. Entry to drama school is usually through an audition. Some schools make this a two-stage process. Places on an acting course are limited (usually well below 100) so those who fare best at the audition are selected. Most academies state that applicants must be over 18 years of age. Auditions usually involve the performance of monologues and group workshops, and may also include a singing activity. This varies from academy to academy. If this is the case for an acting degree, the school looks more at how an applicant can put character into the song rather than how well they can sing. For a musical theatre degree, the emphasis is on showing one's talent as a singer. Most colleges offer recall auditions, often in several stages, in which students being considered for entry onto a course are brought back to audition again, demonstrating their talents further. The courses offered by drama schools are heavily based on practical work, after all, their aim is to train students as professional actors for stage and camera work. Students are required to be enthusiastic and motivated in order to meet the demands offered by the course. At the end of the final year (usually the third) most dra...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5178476 ... Read more

It would be the predecessor of today's Bird College. Bird initially taught pupils in her parents' living room, rolling up the carpet to provide a suitable dance surface, although she later used a local church hall. It consists of two theatres, the Wang Theatre and the Shubert Theatre, both of which are neighbors on Tremont Street in Boston's Theatre District. The Center adopted its new name late in 2006, after signing a 15 year agreement with Citigroup. The center maintains partnerships with the Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet, and the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. A plaque describes the history of the Wang Theatre. The Wang Theatre was originally known as the Metropolitan Theatre when it opened in 1925. It was developed by Max Shoolman and designed by architect Clarence Blackall, with the assistance of Detroit theatre architect C. Howard Crane. It seats more than 3,600 people. In 1962 it became the home of the Boston Ballet and was renamed the Music Hall. During the 1960s and 1970s, audiences could see the Stuttgart Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Bolshoi Ballet and Kirov Ballet as well as popular movies and performing artists. With time though, they could no longer attract the large touring companies because of the size of their stage as well as their outdated production facilities. Converted to a non-profit center in 1980 and renamed the Metropolitan Center, they were able to attract theatrical performances again. In 1983, Dr. An Wang made a very large donation and the Wang Center was born. From 1989 - 1992, $9.8 million was raised to restore the Theatre to "its glory days of the 1920s". Excerpt: The McDonald College -Whilst officially established in 1984, The McDonald College has a tradition and history dating back to the establishment of the Ann McDonald College of Dancing by Ann McDonald, a dance and singing teacher, in 1926. On Ann McDonald's retirement her daughter, Margaret Markham, took over the Ann McDonald College of Dancing. In 1983 Markham saw the opportunity for establishing a specialist academic and performing arts school for gifted children, and subsequently, in partnership with Ann Fraser and Maxine Kohler, agreed to change the Ann McDonald College of Dancing from a private company into a community-based, not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, thus facilitating the establishment of The McDonald College Limited.
