5-0 out of 5 stars Panic Disorder, Agorophobia? Gotta Read this Book
This is a very helpful book in understaniding panic disorder with or without agorophobia. This book has been so helpful to me.Just reading it gave me so much hope.If you are suffering form this, you've don't want to miss this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars PanicDisorder Is Not Your Fault!!!!
I really felt comfort in this book! As a 27 year old female who has had panic attacks since the age of 5, this book is a godsend. Dr. Kernoodle is a Panic Disorder expert who knows what he is talking about. Finally a book that doesn't practically say it's all in our head, and we can control these horrible, debilitating attacks just by thinking different thoughts. His studies have concluded that it is not all in our head, but in our chemical makeup! It can be a disease just like heart disease. Just like a diabetic who needs insulin, Panic disorder can be treated with medications, and behavioral therapy. I like the fact that Dr. Kernoodle makes the sufferer feel it is not the anxiety victim's fault but a real medical problem, which is usually shamefully ignored by the medical profession, because it is a mental disorder. I wish Dr. Kernoodle lived in my area, so I could get the care I have been waiting for all my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic disorder explained--without the jargon
If you have panic disorder (or know someone who does), you must read this book! Without using complex medical jargon, Kernodle gives the most up-to-date explanation of the physiology of panic disorder. Drawing on numerous research studies, journal articles and his experiences in private practice, Kernodle explains current theories on the causes of panic disorder.

The most helpful aspect of Kernodle's book is the clear discussion of various treatments for this complex disorder. Each medication is carefully outlined, from recommended dosages to possible side effects. Kernodle also includes a variety of case studies from his own practice.

This book helped me understand a condition that has overwhelmed my life for many years. With the wealth of information I have learned just from this one book, I am confidently able to discuss my recovery plan with health professionals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for an agoraphobic!
I was quite dissapointed after reading most of this book. It refers to Agoraphobia simply as an avoidance! It gives the general common sence answers for anexiety ; both social and common. I have had Agoraphobia (housebound) for almost 13 years...this time. But have been plagued by it most of my life. It seems by her saying Agoraphobia is merely an avoidance, it is trivalizing the seriousness of it! Wish I had not bought this waste of time! J. Dalton, Swansea, MA.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really a handy carry along to keep in your bag!
I really like this book. I could really relate to the scenarios it gave and love the charts given and self help. I have tons of tabs marking the best pages and she gave so much information it really did cover a lot of areas. I liked it so much firends had me copying and passing out some of the charts and a copy of the cover so they could get a copy themselves because I refuse to loan it out. I carried it in my bag for a very long time. I still use the techniques and plan on rereading it for a refresher. I love the highlighted areas that broke down stufff that was important so you could find it quickly after reading the chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help To Me
This book was very helpful to me.Just reading it seems to cause one's anxious thoughts to subside, as the book describes the causes and physical aspects of a panic attack and helps the reader to identify the process and isolate it as an objective physical and mental phenomenon which can be dealt with rationally using simple techniques described in the book. There are also questions to guide the reader to identify aspects of their personal and family history that may be contributing to the anxiety and panic attacks, and it includes information about standard treatments and medications for anxiety.

The phenomenon of anxiety is rooted in a panicky feeling of being overwhelmed in a crisis. The mere act of objectively studying the anxiety and panic helps to defuse it.Also it is a great help to see that anxiety symptoms are common to other people who have successfully learned to live with and/or overcome them.

Additionally this book is good because it allows you to practice "bibliotherapy" in the privacy of your own home, if you are uncomfortable with the idea of going through the formal mental health system to get some help, and helps you to realize whether your problem is severe enough to need professional assistance, or if you can manage it yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety and panic; please read review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real winner - solid information, with practical, inspirati
Having suffered from panic disorder and phobias on and off for about 15 years,I have seen lots of therapists and read lots of books, none of which touched me like Triumph Over Fear. The author, Jerilyn Ross, is the first person I've encountered who combines both the knowledge of someone who has successfully worked with patients for over 20 years with the empathy and compassion of someone who has been there herself. As I read through Jerilyn's personal story and the various case studies of patients whom she has treated I realized that in spite of what well meaning therapists or authors can teach me about panic attacks, only someone who has experienced the irrational, seemingly out-of control spiralling of an attack can give me the assurance and confidence I needed to move forward. In addition, the self-help portion of the book gave me specific, practical things to work on by myself and with my therapist - which ultimately lead me to making wonderful personal progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from panic attacks as well as to family members trying to understand their loved ones' condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest to relate to book on fear
I've been dealing with an anxiety problem for about 10 years now, only I have been doing it the wrong way with countless drugs given to me by my doctor. There comes a crossroads when you just can't do it like that anymore.I spent the past 3 years getting off the drugs that have done more harm than good and am now learning what I should have learned in the beginning.I have read a ton of books on this disorder and to be honest, some of them you feel the need to have a dictionary beside you they are so complex. The writers forget they are writing the book for people who are not familiar with medical terminology in their everyday lives.Triumph Over Fear is different from the rest in many ways.First, it is easy to understand for just about anyone and is clearly written. Most importantly, it isn't written by someone who has merely studied the problem but has never actually felt what it's like to go through it.It makes no difference how many medical books you have read, how many people you have met, how many letters you have added to the end of your professional name. Unless you've been through this problem you really cannot fully understand it.This author has and that makes her words that much more powerful. This book should be in everyone's home whether you are suffering currently with anxiety or deal with someone you are trying to help but just can't seem to understand why they feel the way they do.Don't wait as long as I did, your life is waiting but the freedom is in you.

In addition to this book, I recommend "Don't panic"-R. Reid Wilson/ and also "the anxiety and phobia workbook"those are more technical and extremely complete in every detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative
This is a good book. It was referred to me by my psychiatrist for OCD. Although it did not address my issues and help me much with my needs, it did make me realize that my problems compare little to some of the issues and difficulties other people have! I liked the book very much and found it very encouraging and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the bases
Having "been there, done that" (anxiety), I've read a lot of books about the subject and I can highly recommend Triumph Over Fear. It's an inspiring, motivating book that covers all the bases.

I'd been a professional speaker for many years, traveling throughout the country giving presentations and teaching classes, then I was in a car accident and became agoraphobic. I told myself that I'd give myself all the time that I needed to heal; I'd concentrate on my writing and not travel for a while. Giving myself time to heal was a great start--I had another book published during those years (and even had a "brush" with an Oprah producer who pitched the idea of having me on the show)--but it had become easier and easier to stay home. I needed to do more. I had to "work" the ideas in Jerilyn's book so I could get back in my car and drive to the mall and go to the movies and, finally, travel again.

Jerilyn shares her own experience with having had anxiety and having recovered from it, then addresses the various anxiety disorders-agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive, panic, post-traumatic stress, social phobia, and generalized anxiety-and gives case studies that illustrate each of them. She also discusses treatment options and shares good solid expertise, common sense, and proven exercises.

Being a writer myself, I loved her suggestion to keep a diary. I also liked the idea of labeling the anxiety and paying careful attention to the thoughts and behaviors that trigger it. I worked the program myself rather than with a therapist, although I did attend a peer support group for a while. And yes, it was a challenge to drive to those meetings, but they were so helpful and necessary! At one time my anxiety had become so pervasive that I found myself wondering who I'd be without it. Jerilyn even addresses that issue in the chapter, "Becoming Acquainted with the New You."

Today I'm feeling better than I have in years. Read Triumph Over Fear for a clearer understanding of anxiety and for the proven, practical guidelines for getting on with your life. - Kathleen Hawkins, president of winningspirit.com and author of Spirit Incorporated: How to Follow Your Spiritual Path from 9 to 5

5-0 out of 5 stars From a woman who's been there.
I've read a lot of books on anxiety, and this is the best. Ross once suffered from an anxiety disorder herself and tried to find treatment, only to be told it was in her head. A lot has been learned about anxiety disorders even in the last ten years, and Ross knows all about it. She not only tells you about the treatment available through therapists (with contact information and resources at the back of the book) but if you want to do it yourself, the book is full of practical advice. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and I can tell you without any hesitation that Triumph Over Fear is self-help stuff at its best. I highly recommend this book. Buy one for yourself and share one with a friend or family member who may suffer without realizing help is available. ... Read more

It is common to become anxious in situations such as job interviews, exams, or a public speaking engagement. For some, however, anxiety symptoms become so severe and persistent that they become disabling.
