Book Description

Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity?
What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions:
All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.”
Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.”
Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.”
Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!”
Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”
Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”
Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”
Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”
Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence.
Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears. In When Panic Attacks, Dr. Burns takes you by the hand and shows you how to overcome every conceivable kind of anxiety. In fact, you will learn how to use more than forty simple, effective techniques, and the moment you put the lie to the distorted thoughts that plague you, your fears will immediately disappear. Dr. Burns also shares the latest research on the drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression and explains why they may sometimes do more harm than good.
This is not pop psychology but proven, fast-acting techniques that have been shown to be more effective than medications. When Panic Attacks is an indispensable handbook for anyone who’s worried sick and sick of worrying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you know nothing
Good book if you've never seen or read a self help book on the subject.Good coverage of drug choices to use when consulting doctors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from a "Bipole"
This is a fabulous resource. I've had depression, mania and anxiety (as well as panic attacks) for the past at least four years, and I've read A LOT of books that aim to help you understand your diagnosis, symptoms, and struggles, and many have been very helpful. This one takes the cake. While not all of the information was new to me, a lot of it was, and the format was perfect for truly helping me understand. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is because I wish there were a newer edition that could update some of the information on medications.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
I was disappointed with this one.Everyone else liked it.I just thought it was very plain, and became bored with it quickly. If you suffer from anxiety check out "Embracing the Fear"...

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to read and understand
I found the book to be very useful in understanding some of the problems my Grandmother faces on a day to day basis and how I might be able to help her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Doctor who talks to us and not AT us!
As a businessman doing business in the always hostile Russian Far East, I am constantly put into severe situations of a dangerous and stressful nature. In seeking advice on handling the anxiety and stress that comewith such situations, it was such a refreshing change to read a book thatis written from a perspective of understanding andcompassion. No"down talking" lectures, but straight talking help for everyonedealing with anxiety, depression or stress. Many of the businesspartners and friends I have in Russia suffer from severe depression due tothe heavy use of alcohol and their living environment. Understandingtheir needs and situation will certainly help in my work and friendships.Having a Medical Doctor affirm the status of gay and lesbians and thedepression that often effects our lives is also a great help to us all! 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, informative, positive and interesting
I have a 16 year old daughter who suffers from panic disorder. I read this book first and then passed it on to her. It is a simple read that took a few hours to get through.
It explains subject matter in an easy to understand format. It is also a very positive read and should give the reader hope and some understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new, life changing perspective on our condition
One out of every ten people in the modern world, regardless of age, gender, nationality, education, or socioeconomic background, suffers from some type of anxiety or panic disorder. I'm one of them. And I know what a struggle living with this condition is. But no more. With a straight-to-the-point language, tons of knowledge that comes from personal experience, thorough explanations of symptoms and causes, and above all, the compassion that can only come form an "ex-sufferer", Bronwyn Fox displays with words the road to not just recovery, but "total" recovery. And the most wonderful effect that this book has on you is that, after reading it, it leaves you with the feeling that, although you thought for a good period of your life that you would never recover, recovery is actually rather simple, and that your illness is not such a big deal after all. It really isn't, you just have the wrong points of view and the wrong approaches to certain thoughts, that's all. This book will teach you how to change those views, and after that happens, you'll be free once again. For the price, it beats the heck out of paying $150 for an hour with a therapist who cannot relate to what you're going through, and above all, doesn't really care what you're going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
After suffering for over 20 years from panic disorder I came upon this blessed book through the HUB site for anxiety disorders.
In this book you will only find expert condensed information, nothing superfluous. It is the 'bible' of anxiety and panic sufferers as it offers specific information on how to deal with anxiety and panic and show you the path to recovery via mindfullness, meditation and Cognitive behaviour therapy.
It teaches you how to loose your fear of fear, how to give an end to the "what if's",how to observe your worst nightmares in a detached yet self loving manner.
It talks about the importance of self esteem in anxiety disorders, about self acceptance, about reconsiliation with fear.
It illustrates the points made with examples from real people in real life and most importantly of all it is written by someone who has 'been there' herself!
For me this book has done more than years and years of psychotherapy...In only 6 months I feel I am in control of my self again when last summer I was falling apart from repeated panic attacks, anxiety and depression.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and low on content
This is a very brief book(let) on panic disorder. It presents some basic facts and recommends the practice of meditation, which is good advice. The content is good but sparse. The book is skimpy on details and way overpriced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding, experience and authority
Power Over Panic is written with the authority of great experience in treating anxiety disorders AND with the compassion and understanding of someone who's been there. She has. This was the first book I found that talked "to" me and not just "about"me,as I went through the most bewildering and frightening experience of my life.Bronwyn Fox is also one of the few writers who has a great depth of knowledge of dissociation (feelings of unreality, feeling out of body)that so often continue to frighten the anxious person.

If you need to be reassured before buying her book check out The Panic and Anxiety Hub on the web and read about her workshops and simple (but not easy)methods of recovery.I'm making real progress with Power Over Panic and I highly recommend it as a stand alone book or in conjuction with professional treatment or other self help methods (Dr. Claire Weekes is another good one!).Thank You Bronwyn Fox! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still relevant today
The advice Dr. Weekes provides is just as relevant today as it was 30 years ago. Nothing has changed. I have returned to Claire Weekes' work time and again. I don't mind her "old fashioned" wording and no nonsense approach to this condition. Everything she says is God's truth... and she does it in a non-frightening way. I've tried other programs, including Lucinda Bassett's. I still think Weekes' tapes are superior. I also recommend David Johnson's Freedom from Fear program, which is entirely based on Claire Weekes' work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
The main argument that Claire Weekes makes in these talks is that fighting the feelings that are upsetting you actually prolongs them.Having suffered from anxiety and depression on and off throughout my life, I immediately knew that what she was saying was 100% true. When you're experiencing feelings that are painful and uncomfortable, your first response is to try to do whatever you can to make the feelings go away. But, since you can't, your sense of discomfort increases with your sense of desperation (why won't these feelings go away?) and a vicious cycle begins. The only solution is to accept what you're feeling, remind yourself that the feelings will not last forever, and go on with your life as usual as best you can. This may not seem like "brilliant" advice, but for those who have experienced this cycle firsthand, they'll recognize immediately just how right and insightful she is.Dr. Weekes goes into some detail about what brings on these feelings in the first place, why, no matter what we do, they don't always go away immediately, and how to best deal with this situation. Her words are very reassuring and right on target.

Definitely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing that helped!
Dr. Claire Weekes is the only one that I had come across in my journey to end my panic and anxiety attacks. After reading many of her books and listening to her tapes, etc., I finally got it.I suffered for over 5 years with debilitating attacks while being a single mom with 3 small children. After adopting Dr. Weekes philosphies, I have had a happy and emotionally healthy life.If ever I feel any major stress, all I do is remind myself of her face, accept, and float philosphy and it works to rid me of that anxious feeling.I highly recommend Dr. Claire Weekes materials for panic and anxiety disorder recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing
Enjoy this very much. Some of her ideas help to rid the panic attacks.

3-0 out of 5 stars ?
I am a psychotherapist and hoped this cd would be simple enough to understand and have a soothing, gentle approach so I can suggest it to my clients towards their recovery. Even though her books are good,Claire Weekes voice is, I found very stern and harsh for anxiety sufferers and lacked a soft gentle touch.

Book Description

There's nothing funny about panic attacks . . . or is there? As this problem reaches epidemic proportions in the U.S., two brave women journey to the front line in the battle against panic and return with stories of courage, anxiety, recovery, and just general craziness in a crazy world.

Journalists by trade, panic attack sufferers by habit, the authors understand that panic disorder is like a haunted house - the only way out is through it. So they wrote a book that makes those panic ghosts and goblins a little less scary.

Organized around first-person accounts, The Panic Diaries investigates what panic is, how people experience it, and how it's treated. The authors also interview some in-the-know people, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and natural health professionals, who offer treatments that are proven to help sufferers overcome their panic attacks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Panic Lite
A very disappointing book. I have read many books on anxiety and panic disorder over the years, and this is one of the most useless. Nothing new here. The personal stories sound phony and are not in the least bit inspiring. The tone is irritating, as though it were written for 13 year olds - lots of "Yikes!" and "Fun!" Misery does not love company in this case. If you want to spend your money on something worthwhile, try "Overcoming Anxiety for Dummies," or anything by Edmund Bourne. There are loads of good books out there on panic and anxiety - just not this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY ACCESS
I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND FOUND THE INFORMATION USEFUL AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND . THUS SAID I HAVE ALREADY PASSED MY COPY ON TO A RELATIVE WHOM I THINK IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO. CONSEQUENTLY I AM PURCHASING 2 MORE COPIES TODAY ONE FOR ME AND I'VE THOUGHT OF ANOTHER FRIEND WHO MIGHT FIND IT HELPFUL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lilmac
As a sufferer of panic attacks, I found this book light hearted, funny and hopeful. The authors do not claim to be medical experts, only women who have experienced the same things many panic sufferers can relate to.Having done my share of research on panic attacks, I found this book compiled all the major information into one, easy to read resource. It made me laugh, but most of all, it made me feel normal.I would highly recommend this book as one of many resources to someone suffering from panic attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Panic Diaries

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Allows those who suffer anxiety or panic attacks to better understand their condition and do something about it in terms of self help. Can also be very useful for relatives of the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get out of the cycle!
This writer really hits the nail on the head when she talks about the
whole cycle of panici.e., you freak out that you're going to have
a panic attack, which makes you have a panic attack, which makes you
avoid dealing with it, which makes you feel like a loser, which makes you
try to deal with it, which makes you freak out that you're going to
have a panic attack, which, duh, makes you have another panic attack!
But then there are actually some cool techniques to get OUT of the damn
cycle. So I recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Self Help Book
I recently got this and it is certainly an above average anti anxiety self help book, I have read many and this offers some real ways to reduce anxiety as it titles states. Its most certainly worth picking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helps my Clients!
I am a professional in the healing arts, and over the years I've treated many clients who suffer from one form of anxiety disorder or another. Last year, one of my regulars got her hands on this book, and wow! She really showed tremendous improvement. She asked me if I would recommend it to my other clients, so I read it, and thought enough of it to suggest it to a few other clients with anxiety-related issues. So far, the word back has been totally positive. I'm embarassed to say it's taken me almost a year to get around to writing this review, but if it helps even one person with what I can vouch for being a particularly difficult problem to overcome, I've done my job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help --No Bull.
Ninety-nine percent of thebooks I've read that were supposedly going to help me with my panic attacks have been (to put it charitably) so NOT helpful. Mostly they tend to skip out on the hard-core practical advice, hoping that your doctor and/or therapist will fill in all the difficult blanks. But Panic Free rocked my world. Even though it's easy to read (I found the writing stylekind of entertaining!) all the info is there, and it makes sense, and -- best of all-- it is user-friendly.
In order to feel like any bookis helping me get better, I really need proof it's working. Since there are exercises to do in here -- and since they are totally working for me -- I feel way more confident that I can recover FOR GOOD.
In all, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This is an incredible resource with anyone dealing with anxiety. The workbook covers the likly causes of anxiety, provides numerous coping techniques and excercises and discusses new various treatments availible.

The workbook is easy to read and written with compassion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive; however use caution re: meds
This book provides an excellent and comprehensive look at anxiety disorders. The worksheets are helpful, and there are many specific coping strategies outlined in detail, enabling the reader to implement them. This book provides a road map to work through anxieties and find a more rewarding life. I would advise, however, to read the information on medications (which is a small part of the book) with caution. Valium (Diazepam) should not be used for more than 4 weeks or dependency results. A family member who was incorrectly diagnosed and put on Valium for one year has been off work for three months as she tapers off this substance. The withdrawal has been a very difficult road. I recommend focusing on all the other techniques covered in this book to deal with anxiety.

4-0 out of 5 stars understanding
Have to give anyone an A+ for using this book, taking action, understanding and resolving their problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful reading
This workbook on anxiety and phobias helps to shed light on several disorders in an easy to read book.I felt I was getting an in depth look at not just my own concerns, but the concerns of other patients and therapists. The book not only presents the reader with the basic need-to-know scientific knowledge but goes beyond that to give the reader options for self-help.It helped me to realize I was not alone and living with anxiety did not mean an end to living life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated; Really pushes the Medications
Written and updated way back in 1997; would have been better to have the latest information on the medicines in the intervening 10 years. His insistence on pushing the anti-anxiety medications - despite their addictive qualities - made me uncomfortable. He also seems disdainful of alternative methods of treating/overcoming anxiety/panic disorders.I had hoped to really like his book and find it useful and reassuring, but instead, I felt annoyed at reading it - as if the author was arrogant with his opinions and attitude about treatment options.I cannot recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!!
Prior to reading Dr. Granoff's book I had tried numerous medications, psychotherapy, CBT, desensitization, etc. etc.Nevertheless, the panic remained.I was on the fast track to complete agorophobia.Subsequent to reading his book I met with him and now I am living my life again and pursuing a career path and life that seemed impossible before. With the CORRECT knowledge, treatment for what is a physical condition, and some personal work; you can overcome panic disorder.I highly recommend his book.In short, Dr. Granoff is a REAL consumer advocate for those suffering from this crappy disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars EYE OPENING
Dr. Granoff's book is superb. For anyone who has ever suffered a panic attack, this book should be the first one that you read.

The well-credentialed Dr. Granoff begins with a thorough, yet understandable, analysis of what occurs chemically in a person's brain when they suffer a panic attack. (The list of symptoms will absolutely surprise you. You may find that panic disorder has been manifesting itself over many years, sometimes worsening in the absence of appropriate treatment.)

An interesting fact that I discovered in this book is that benzodiazepine is a naturally occurring chemical in the brain. Dr. Granoff compassionately, yet analytically, explains how this chemical functions in the brain, and how panic attacks can occur when there are deficient quantities of naturally-occurring benzodiazepine.

Dr. Granoff does not say this, but, it is possible that, after you read this book, you will conclude that the pharmaceutical industry deliberately pushes its new, PATENTED, EXPENSIVE drugs, while at the same time dogging the benzodiazepine family of drugs (Xanax, etc.) because the exclusive patents on the benzodiazepines have expired and they are, thus, a cheap (and perhaps more effective) means of treating your panic disorder.

Of course, only a competent psychiatrist can properly determine your clinical diagnosis, but, Dr. Granoff gives an accessible view of panic disorder and its solutions.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, however, Dr. Granoff gives you lots of hope by sharing his substantial clinical experience in treating this potentially debilitating disorder. If you can stop panic attacks, then that is a victory for you and your loved ones, and Granoff explains how victory is possible.

Many thanks to Dr. Granoff for writing a book that steared me in the right treatment direction. I consider it providence that this plain-looking book would have helped me so much. I was unable to carry on my profession before I sought the appropriate treatment after reading this book. I have a life now, and a hope. And that is more than I can say that I had two years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding
James Croak's review of Jan 10, 03 shows his lack of understanding the complexities of medical diagnosis and treatment. It shows not only how easily a lay person can misinterpret medical information but also how easily one can accept unscientific information from non-medical sources and extole it as fact.

First, my experience with my own panic attacks occurred in the early 80's. This was a time before the psychiatric community, the general medical community and the public had much knowledge or experience with the symptoms and treatment of panic attacks. The story of my two panic attacks was added to my book as an attempt to reassure people who have these symptoms of how physically real and frightening they are. They do not feel they could be caused by the brain. Even after intellectually knowing that, emotionally connecting this fact can be difficult.

Second, the statement that panic disorder is cured daily by behavioral psychologists shows a lack of understanding the nature of this illness. It is a physical disorder of the brain that has a genetic predisposition. No one is able to fix the genetics yet. The illness usually comes and goes on its own for most people giving the appearance of "cure" for those who don't follow it long term. About 30% of people have one attack or one series of attacks never to have them return regardless of treatment type or lack of it. The claim of "cure" by those who are not MD's, ie: psychologists, social workers, counselors, "therapists," motivators, or sufferers who have found the "right formula," is not based on scientific fact. Tragedy can occur when one goes through the "cure" and has partial remission or another series of attacks. The feelings that accompany that failure may prevent the search for a different, more effective treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Granoff is a rarity in Medicine---objective
The book is absolutely perfect for those suffering from panic disorder. Granoff makes an excellent, excellent point, one that all primary care physicians and psychiatrists should read again and again until it's seared into their memory: the only patients with panic disorder that need antidepressants are ones who have depression as a PRIMARY symptom, not a secondary symptom. All others with panic disorder need benzodiazepines. Now, first let me say that I only 90% agree with that brilliant statement. For the lay readers out there, you may not see the brilliance---it may look like a total boring common-sense statement. But you don't understand how brainwashed the medical community is about antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Antidepressants like SSRI's and the newer ones like Remeron, Effexor, Serzone, and Wellbutrin are patented, while all benzodiazepines are generic. What does that mean? It means that generics get no positive publicity, only negative, while brand-name patented drugs get billions and billions of dollars worth of sleek, catchy advertisement, including the sales pitch that "antidepressants can help panic disorder". The reality is that antidepressants can help only about 1/3 with panic disorder, dont do much for about 40% of patients, and actually WORSEN panic symptoms in about 1/4 of people. And the 1/3 that get helped almost certainly have major depression as the primary diagnosis, AND the major depression is the primary cause of their panic disorder. Antidepressants are delayed stimulants; they will not give you a panic attack in minutes like too much caffiene can---it may take days for the antidepressant to induce more anxiety. That anxiety may fade later, or for many patients, it will never fade. For people who have only mild depression and prominent anxiety/panic, benzodiazepines are the primary therapy. A small amount of antidepressant may help, since the overstimulation caused by them is dose-dependent. For a more detailed review of these issues, I recommend the book The Failures of American Medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For the anxious and frustrated.. a book that understands
I first read this book in New Zealand.. and soon became hooked. Mainly as I suffer from anxiety and depression. I found it insiteful and cathartic. It helped me to understand more fully my idiosyncracies and attitudes, and gave me more peace of mind. It offers good advice on how to help combat these debilitating conditions and gain your life back. I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from these conditions, or lives with anyone who has them, to better understand what feelings are involved, and that no one ever chooses to suffer; for many reasons, it is simply how our brain reacts to difficult situations, and no one is to blame. An empathetic, yet highly practical book.

5-0 out of 5 stars copies to family and friends
I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help.I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me.One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy for laymen
very easy to understand the causes of panic and aniexity, creates easy to understandsolutions for people suffering from long term panic, GAD, etc..

5-0 out of 5 stars a great step-by-step practical solution
I have just started using this book and it is such a relief. It is immensely practical and effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Advance in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a widespread treatment that has unfortunately not received the empirical testing it deserves. One reason that has been cited for its lack of research is the difficulty in standardizing psychodynamic psychotherapy in a manual form so that therapists can be trained to deliver itreliably.Dr. Milrod and her colleagues have met this challenge. Their book clearly describes how psychodynamic psychotherapy can be focused to treat panic disorder, a common and disabling but treatable condition. The book serves as the treatment manual for an ongoing comparative psychotherapy study at Cornell University in New York City, where Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is being compared to another treatment to test its efficacy. The authors are knowledgeable psychoanalysts. Their well-written book should be helpful to psychodynamic psychotherapists, and perhaps to patients with panic as well. It represents an important advance for the field. ... Read more

Shirley Trickett writes understandable language and helpful guidelines
for this illness.I recommend this natural approach to everyone who

4-0 out of 5 stars Really is helping me!
I've suffered from panic attacks for nearly all of my adult life (let's just say I've held @ 29 for a while!).While I don't suffer from an attack daily (although I did in the beginning), I do suffer from the FEAR of having an attack.Panic is slowly eroding my life away, and I find myself giving into it as I get older.I've read articles and information online about panic disorder and how to cope with it.I found this book and read it over the weekend.I felt as though Ms. Trickett cracked open my chest and looked into my heart and soul!At times, I cried because I felt as though she were reading my life's story back to me.The best thing I took away from this book is the information on hyperventilating - I had NO IDEA this was going on during a panic attack! In my opinion, Chapter 9, "Improve Your Breathing," is the MOST helpful how-to literature I've read about diaphragmic breathing.I've practiced yoga in both a studio and at home with DVDs, as well as found online information about deep breathing, and I was really able to put this type of breathing into practice thanks to this book.I've been practicing it as often as I can and I feel very calm and collected - I'm hoping that the positive practice becomes habit so I can remain calm.I also hope to be able to call on this breathing in the event of a panic attack AND before trying something that would put me in the way of a situational panic attack (flying and driving on the freeway are 2 things that toss me into panic).I would recommend putting this book into your library as a resource and couple it with any and all other resources you are using (therapy, medicine, etc.).For those of us that suffer from panic/anxiety disorder, we need all the tools we can get in our arsenal!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Solutions You Can Apply Today for Immediate Results
After suffering personally from panic attacks, Trickett compiles numerous studies and self-help answers from medical journals and files, scientific publications, and empirical wisdom on how to recognize symptoms of panic attacks and how to treat them yourself.
Covering topics from exhausted nerves to low blood sugar she gives some wonderful suggestions on how a healthy diet, muscle maintenance and proper breathing can reduce the cause and effect of Agoraphobia.
Great book with lots of practical information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mother of a Panic Attack Sufferer
While I appreciate Ms. Trickett's efforts, it does not address the seriousnes of some panic attack sufferers. My daughter suffered up to 35 panic attacks a day and was quickly becoming agoraphobic (fear of going aside for fear of triggering an attack). While prayer plays a role, her book is not sufficient enough to truly deal with the seriousness of this issue. It has taken two years of therapy to bring to the surface the root of the problem and telling a victim to pray, go outside daily, laugh, etc. really is not much help.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intentions but at times counterproductive
Although the author is obviously driven by good intentions, such as promoting natural therapies which are invariably ignored by traditional medicine, she seems to have a dangerous prejudice against the use of medications which can be very useful for the treatment of more serious forms of panic attacks. The relaxation, diet, breathing retraining and massage techniqies she recommends are all very nice things and can be very helpful for mild sufferers. They can undoubtedly also be of great help for people with a more severe condition. However, writing that tranquillizers and antidepressants can actually cause panic attacks - as she does - can considerably increase a patient's fears and phobias about taking the medication he or she has been rightly prescribed.
I found certain parts of the book as extremely helpful - such as the ones where she describes what happens in our body during panic attacks - which helps to de-mistify them and put them into perspective. However, as I pointed out, her stigma against tranquillizers, sleeping pills and even anti-depressants is absolutely counterproductive and it ignores the fact that millions of people would have to leave their jobs and isolate themselves for months if they avoided taking them - thus perhaps adding to their low self-esteem and in some cases precipitating their depressive symptoms to uncontrollable levels. Although the underlying conditions are very different, what she writes is comparable to telling people who suffer from diabetes they should be careful about taking insulin because they may become addicted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me when professionals could not
This inexpensive book answered my questions on panic disorder that hundreds of dollars of psychotherapy time could not. It is a pleasure to read and helped me so much back in '94. His emphasis on behavioral therapy is very helpful. I wish this were still in print. I donated my copy to the library as I only suffer panic when I don't live right.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is 10 years old, but good primer, misses recent drugs.
My review of the book The Good news about panic, anxiety, and phobias by Mark Gold.I found this book easy to read and covers a broad range of anxiety disorders.Right from the start though I was wishing for the "good news". Of course the good news is that anxiety disorders are the number onemental health problem among women and are second only to drug and alcoholabuse among men.I wish it gave the good news earlier in the book as ittakes some reading to discover this news.He points out that its not yourfault and that your condition can be treated and in many cases cured.Evenif you haven't responded to treatment in the past don't despair, Inreality, its not the patient that fails the treatment but the treatmentthat fails the patient.

On one page he supplies a checklist of anxietysymptoms, he states that most panic and anxiety have physical causes. Thengoes on a soapbox on the shortcomings of psychiatrist in the diagnosing ofanxiety. When we get to page 35 we begin a definition of the terms used inthe book:

PA - Panic Attack Phobias GAD - Generalized Anxiety DisordersOCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress DisorderAD - Adjustment Disorder

When we get to chapter 6 we finallystart getting into possible physical causes that can present symptomssimilar to those of anxiety.

The book has a listing of state-by-state experts and sourcesand bibliography although again most of the works seem to be from the 80'sso more recent data should be available. If you need to come up to speedits not a bad book but if you need a more in depth discussion this isprobably not the book for you. That along with it being 10 years old makeit a ok book if you find it discounted, but you could probably find morerecent data for the same buck.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is essential reading if you have panic disorder
Mark S. Gold, an authority on biological psychiatry, has produced a readable, scientifically well supported book that should be of great help to people with anxiety disorders. Unlike the great majority of books onthis topic, everything in it makes good common sense and good scientific sense. It also gives desperately needed information on effective medications and dosages, which allows sufferers to take charge of their own illness and its treatment. ...
