4-0 out of 5 stars An End to Panic
I bought this book for my mom, but I believe that she is enjoying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Panic I Own
I have been plagued with panic attacks for 5 years. Despite medication and therapy, the anxiety of having another panic attack remains with me 24/7.
This book was recommended to me by my therapist, and it is truly excellent. Do not plan to breeze through it in a few evenings, though. It has questions to answer, things to ponder, and requires more involvement than "quick fix" books that you've probably already tried. You must truly commit to going through the book and doing the exercises - and making that commitment can be difficult. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Middle-of-the Road-Reconsidered
Asa person that suffers from panic disorder, I was very excited about the excellent reviews for this book and bought a copy immediately from Amazon. There is a lot of misinformation on the Internet on panic disorder and so an authoritative guide would be most welcome. On the positive side, the book is more than double spaced, with large type and can be read in a couple hours-at most-and it covers most of symptoms the panic disorder suffer might encounter. On the neutral side, it proposes unproven-observational-theories by the author about the relationship to GERD, etc.The most controversial idea from a conventional wisdom point of view is that Xanax (alprazolam) should be the first-line drug treatment, not SSRI's, although he infers talk therapy only would be a better choice..

Shipko states (and I am of the same opinion) that the "benzos" have been given a bad name in the medical community to promote the SSRI antidepressants, some of which are much more expensive and not available generically. The problem is that the panic sufferer doesn't need something to make him/her more anxious, and most SSRI's do just that.Rather like going to the doctor with severe pain and being given something that causes more pain.To the extent that Dr. Shipko has convinced even a few docs of the therapeutic value of the benzodiazepine family (Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin) and the intense suffering of panic disorder, he has done the community a great service.

The reason for three stars is that the book offers little else, other than several interesting, if not proven opinions. While a minor point, on p.113, there is a glaring error: "Of the three BDZs mentioned [Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin; my insert] Ativan is the only one ever approved by the FDA for the treatment of panic disorder."That's 100% wrong-the only FDA-approved benzodiazepine for panic disorder is Xanax (feel free to look it up on your favorite search engine). While it is easy to understand the"mistake", it is so crucial to his argument that I have questions as to how carefully the manuscript was read.

In summary, it is an interesting book that is a quick read and has some interesting ideas, but is not worth buying-borrowing from the library, yes, purchasing, no.

Update August 28, 2010
Having read Dr. Shipko's book two additional times, I've come to the conclusion that some of my criticisms were misplaced. There are invaluable "gems" hidden in the text that I missed upon first reading-but in my defense, Dr. Shipko often does not elaborate; example, p.141, "The Internet information on BDZ withdrawal is extreme and seems most appropriate for BZD-addicted people..."-this is HUGE point, deserving, to my way of thinking, a bit more explanation.Such an explanation might warn the reader not to be fearful of what one reads about Xanax withdrawal on the Internet, because the majority of the information is for Xanax-loving addicts, not benzo-hating panic disorder patients. Another important seldom-mentioned insight casually passed over is the psychological aspect of withdrawal-if you are very scared of withdrawing, you will generate physical symptoms that will not allow you to continue to taper...I found that point very helpful in a recent withdrawal; you have to be in a relative calm place to withdraw and attempting to withdraw while still quite ill is doomed to failure.

If one searches for the "gems"-and recognizes them when they are found, the book becomes an extremely valuable addition to the panic disorder literature, worthy of five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's as if he KNOWS what I'm thinking
I'm not even through with the book yet, but upon completing about 10 chapters in a day and a half I am in awe of how amazing of a Doctor he is. He specifically studied cases of panic attacks and everything I read hits the nail right on the head. Things that I have problems explaining, he says in there and I realize what's happening to me EXACTLY. I'm really glad I bought this book. He is a dedicated Doctor and I would see him as a regular patient if I could. He's seen it all and it helps me feel that my panic attacks are so normal because he's dealt with so many people with the exact same symptoms. He doesn't sugar coat it either. It's not concluded in a mean, and belittling way, but rather a way that he understands, and that you are FAR from being alone. He also doesn't blab on about meaningless symptoms. He literally takes the words right out of my mouth and sums them up. Definitely worth every penny and I WILL be passing this on to other friends I know who suffer from panic disorders. Thank You Dr. Shipko!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An easy to read, no nonsense book about Panic Disorder.Written in clear laymans' terms, double spaced text and short chapters, this book moves along quickly and is filled with information that is easily absorbed. With good advice and a keen understanding of Panic Disorder, the author writes about treating real people and shares their experiences. The treatment advice and coping mechanisms are right on. One of the best I've read on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Ever Read on This Subject
I feel like I've spent my whole life in search of a book like this.It is by far the best book on panic disorder I have ever read.Reading this book felt like coming home.I have read many, many books on the subject of panic disorder, but this was the ONLY book I ever truly got anything out of.Definitely Five Plus Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight on many Neglected Issues
Dr. Shipko's book not only provides a great overview of panic disorder, but also addresses topics that are often neglected on the subject. Psychological, psychiatric and medical aspects of this frequently misunderstood condition are clearly addressed. Even as an educated patient, I found myself learning new things beyond the DSM-IV manual. Topics include necessary medical tests, GERD and IBS issues, medication and psychotherapy issues, as well as heredity, pregnancy, birth, children, relationship and marriage issues. I believe that anyone with panic disorder could greatly benefit from this insightful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexual Aversion, Sexual Phobias And Panic Disorders
Sexual avoidance disorders are the primary complaint of many patients seeking help for sexual dificulties and have been recommended as a new diagnostic entity in DSM-III-R under the category Disorders of Sexual Desire.

Now, Helen Singer Kaplan, author of the widely used volumes, The New Sex Therapy and Disorders of Sexual Desire has written a pioneering book that provides the first integration of brief psychodynamic therapy with antipanic medication. She demonstraties that both psychotherapy and medication have valuable but entirely distinct functions in the treatment of these sexual disorders and both are needed to help patients with drug-responsive sexual anxiety.

Sexual Aversion, Sexual Phobias And Panic Disorders provides a detaied guide to the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. It first describes the clinical features of the sexual avoidance syndromes and panic disorder. Then a pluralistic concept of the etiology of sexual phobias is presented, stressing the interplay between the patients biological vulnerability and the efects of cultural, neurotic, and relationship stresses.

Following is an unusually valuable chapter on Sexual Disorders and Medication written by Donald F. Klein, M.D., one of the country's foremost experts in psychopharmacology. He discusses the appropriate prescription of medication following the careful differential diagnosis of anxious and depressive states in patients complaining of sexual disorders.

Succeeding chapters cover an integrated approach to treatment that combines medication with brief psychodynamic therapy; conjoint sex therapy with couples who have problems related to their separation anxiety and rejection sensitvity; and some hypotheses about drugs and the psychodynamic process.

Throughout the volume, detailed cse studies make clear the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sexual avoidance syndromes.

Sexual Aversion, Sexual Phobias And Panic Disorders is an indispensible volume for all physicians and couples, and familes with sexual problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like this book for clients to work on on their own
I am a psychologist and often work with anxiety and panic w/clients. I find this book helpful for them to have in conjunction with counseling

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book from a doctor who doesn't suffer NPD
First, a little personal background. It was a Monday in early May (10th to be exact) when it hit like a ton of bricks. When I say that I mean a TON OF BRICKS and it felt as if each and every brick was piled on my chest. I had no doubt whatsoever that I was about to die. At the time I was driving on a limited access toll road and the exits were few and far between.Somehow that afternoon I made it home.I tried to calm down but I was walking outside and I could not stop moving. It was absolutely horrible.

Our son had a little league baseball game at 7 p.m. which is why I came home early. As I backed out of the garage and started for the park I found myself turning toward the hospital instead. I presented with chest pains, sky high blood pressure, thought I was going nuts (it might have been too late for that - it might have already happened), was shaking all over, could not sit still and knew I was going to die.I was whisked past the emergency room and promptly deposited in a bed in the Coronary Care Unit of a major teaching hospital with a suspected heart attack.

For the next two days the staff ran tests, more tests and I think they tested the tests. A bucket of money later the Chief of Cardiology, who was also a friend, proclaimed from "on high" that I had not had a heart attack and he didn't have a clue about what happened. He was not alone in his non-diagnosis diagnosis.

Over the next nine years I saw 13 physicians and 2 psychologists with the end result being that I LOST nine years of my life as I became agoraphobic also. All they actually did for me was shove another Valium scrip into my pocket until I was at 60 mg. of Valium and ValRelease per day. It was like popping M & Ms for all the good it did. For five years, in my prime with our son's sports events and all, I could not leave our home. The most I could do was walk to the end of the driveway and get the newspaper.

When I finally found someone who could help me on July 20, 1991 it only required about 2 days of meds to get my *whole* life back.

Now, on to the review:

A little fast for the review notice from Amazon as this book is a course of action self-learning. All great knowledge stems from autodidactic personalities and David Carbonell definitely provides a wonderful process of self-learning. After just a few minutes with this tome you will be able to see where he is going. All you have to do is follow the bread crumbs to get home safely.

This should tell someone reading these reviews that this is not a "grab it, couldn't put it down" type of book (or manual, if you prefer that term). This is not a quick fix like a pill that lasts until its half-life depletes its efficacy. To complete the program you must work at it like you have never worked before. It's scary. It's challenging. It's a lifesaver.

The book does not have a path to a cure for panic disorder but you do not need to find a cure to get your life back. This program is really good.

While The National Institute of Mental Health says, "There is no cure for panic disorder" relief is something you can achieve if you decide to own this book. If you suffer from Panic Disorder, to any degree, you owe it to yourself to order this book as soon as practicable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Panic/Anxiety Book I Have Read
I have suffered with panic and anxiety for a long time, and have read and tried many self-help books along the way.I started this book yesterday, and read it cover to cover.I can already see the ways of my thinking about panic was flawed for years. This book is already helping see the light at the end of the panic "cycle."The exercises are all useful and humorous, and I never found myself getting bored or confused by the writing.

Please remember, as with any large task you undertake, you may get worse before you get better, but that's because you are facing it, and that takes a lot of courage. This book will help you see that and understand that it's okay to be who you are, and having an anxiety problem does not make you a flawed person. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can change your life
I have used this book to supplement the work I'm doing with a good therapist.I learn something important about myself every time I read it, and I feel like I am reading a book that is written about me.It has been so valuable in my work towards treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and depression. For me, this is the most valuable book I have read in my entire life. For the first time, I have hope that I can overcome the debilitating anxiety I have lived with for years.I am learning skills that will help me from relapsing into old ineffective behaviors.I will reference this book for years to come.

This is the most complete, easiest to read and comprehensive book I have read on the subject. Chock full of information that will help therapists and clients deal with whatever comes their way via anxiety. A winner.Reading Thomas Merton: A Guide to His Life and Work

5-0 out of 5 stars For the anxious and frustrated.. a book that understands
I first read this book in New Zealand.. and soon became hooked. Mainly as I suffer from anxiety and depression. I found it insiteful and cathartic. It helped me to understand more fully my idiosyncracies and attitudes, and gave me more peace of mind. It offers good advice on how to help combat these debilitating conditions and gain your life back. I would highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from these conditions, or lives with anyone who has them, to better understand what feelings are involved, and that no one ever chooses to suffer; for many reasons, it is simply how our brain reacts to difficult situations, and no one is to blame. An empathetic, yet highly practical book.

5-0 out of 5 stars copies to family and friends
I have had a copy for many years and have given copies to a grandchild and one child, since anxiety can be inherited (my father had it, and we also have hypoglycemia). I have also given the order forms in the back to friends. I first became aware of panic attacks as an eight year old, but I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties, and only after many counseling sessions for panic which didn't help.I found this book and it meant the end of Xanax for me.One doesn't have to read it all at once. The first things to learn are distraction and breathing exercises. Then move on to magnification and other thought control processes.

Product Description

Psychiatric classifications created in one culture may not be as universal as we assume, and it is difficult to determine the validity of a classification even in the culture in which it was created. Culture and Panic Disorder explores how the psychiatric classification of panic disorder first emerged, how medical theories of this disorder have shifted through time, and whether or not panic disorder can actually be diagnosed across cultures.

In this breakthrough volume a distinguished group of medical and psychological anthropologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and historians of science provide ethnographic insights as they investigate the presentation and generation of panic disorder in various cultures. The first available work with a focus on the historical and cross-cultural aspects of panic disorders, this book presents a fresh opportunity to reevaluate Western theories of panic that were formerly taken for granted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unsure Still
I bought this book since my therapist recommended it.I started to read the first couple of pages and was not really interested.I guess I'll have to be in the mood to read this type of book.I gave it 4 stars because I'm still unsure but my therapist says it's a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars too many changes from the previous version
i especially don't like how the suggested readings jump from chapter to chapter vs. proceeding through the book one chapter at a time in sequential order.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Anxiety- Great Choice!
I have struggled with anxiety and panic issues for a long time now, and nothing helps me feel more in control about my panic than this book. It covers every topic that someone struggling with anxiety worrys about, and reassures you that its all going to be okay and that you are in control of your panic. I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about managing their anxiety and panic, because it does require a decent amount of effort. However, it definitely pays off in the end. The worksheets and overall interactive nature of this book is extremely helpful in that the book does more than just lecture you about your panic. It allows you to be an active participant in your effort to manage (and eventually overcome) panic and anxiety. This is the book for you if you are ready to change your life!

Product Description
Are you plagued by fears, phobias, or panic attacks? Do you toss and turn at night with a knot in your stomach, worrying about your job, your family, work, your health, or relationships? Do you suffer from crippling shyness, obsessive doubts, or feelings of insecurity?
What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. Anxiety is one of the world’s oldest cons. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself. You are telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. See if you can recognize yourself in any of these distortions:
All-or-Nothing Thinking: “My mind will go blank when I give my presentation at work, and everyone will think I’m an idiot.”
Fortune Telling: “I just know I’ll freeze up and blow it when I take my test.”
Mind Reading: “Everyone at this party can see how nervous I am.”
Magnification: “Flying is so dangerous. I think this plane is going to crash!”
Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”
Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”
Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”
Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”
Now imagine what it be like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence.
Does that sound impossible? The truth is you can defeat your fears. In When Panic Attacks, Dr. Burns takes you by the hand and shows you how to overcome every conceivable kind of anxiety. In fact, you will learn how to use more than forty simple, effective techniques, and the moment you put the lie to the distorted thoughts that plague you, your fears will immediately disappear. Dr. Burns also shares the latest research on the drugs commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression and explains why they may sometimes do more harm than good.
This is not pop psychology but proven, fast-acting techniques that have been shown to be more effective than medications. When Panic Attacks is an indispensable handbook for anyone who’s worried sick and sick of worrying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!
This book is the greatest self-help book Ive read about my mood swings. The book tells you that all the negative thinking and mood swings are caused because of your irrational thinking and suggests that if we can change how we THINK, we can change how we FEEL. Of course this insight is backed up, explained in depth throughout the book with practical, interesting, fun, self-observing and self-healing exercises. These exercises do work especially if you like writing, keeping a journal or simply examining yourself. The exercises reveal very interesting facts about your thinking process, they reach to the most deepdown FEAR you have that cause all these negative feelings and anxiety. The author promises compassionately that he is ready to help you and he is SURE, IF YOU FOLLOW the book, do the exercises YOU CAN STOP THE WAY YOU FEEL BY CHANGING THE WAY YOU THINK. The exercises in the book let you REFUTE a negative thought that you have and the negative thought becomes NO LONGER valid. I could write forever about this book. I wish I could give this book away to people who suffer the way I suffered!!!! ITS THE BEST BOOK ever in its field.

This was a gift for a friend, but they seemed happy with it and it came pretty fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginning for Recovery
This is a good book to aid in recovery, however, I agree with the author:quicker recovery from severe anxiety disorder is possible when assisted by a professional psychologist. But he does present some very valid points and I can attest to this from personal experience. One is that medication is not the answer. He stated that recovery time with and without medication is about the same. I agree. The book presents actual case studies and maps out a course for self-assisted recovery. And while these are very good tools, it was hard for me to focus on reading after a major breakdown. I think it does make a good companion to professionally guided psychotherapy, but is not a substitute.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel better already
great advice and very good real-life examples. if you or anyone you know struggles a little or a lot with anxiety or depression issues, these CDs and/or the book can lessen the symptoms without analyzing your past and your childhood.good advice and readily useful!however, as the author states, if you have really serious issues, it is also wise to see a professional therapist.

I'm so glad somebody recommended this author to me for my anxiety problems!Everybody deals with anxiety on some level, and all types of anxiety problems can be improved by this book, from fear of public speaking, to panic attacks or agoraphobia.Unlike other anxiety books I've read, this book is written in an upbeat and hopeful way that has lifted my spirit from just reading it.Reading does help, but if you want to get better, you'll have to be brave and do the exercises.Don't run away from your anxiety, face it, work through it, and get better! This book is worth much more than the cost, so why don't you give it a try?I've already improved a lot!It will guide you on the way to recovery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A way to support family and friends
Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones.Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion.A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Reso
Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource
This book is a valuable addition to the others on the subject. Written in a direct and compassionate voice, it provides great insight and assistance to anyone connected to this disorder. I myself do not suffer from it; however, I'm close to a number of people who do. This book is a tremendous help to those of us who must learn to cope with a loved one who has a panic/anxiety disorder. And it provides an excellent tool to begin safely discussing the topic with that loved one. Lastly, I've had the privilege to meet the author on a couple occasions and talk about the issue -- she is truly knowledgeable, sensitive, and passionate about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, basic stuff that works.
I'd heard about Linda's upcoming tips book on Panic and Anxiety Disorder, but wasn't really interested in reading it, mainly because it was a "tips" book; I've seen those booklets in the check-out line, and always considered them vague and rather gimmicky. So, when I first picked up "Panic and Anxiety Disorder, 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More", not only was I surprised by its book-like appearance, I was also drawn to its calm, down-to-earth approach to self-help.Yes, there are numbered tips, but as I read, I realized this wasn't implicitly for someone coping with anxiety disorders; Linda has written to everybody. Her tips, while pinpointing individual aspects of anxiety, actually address the very simple, basic, moment-by-moment steps to follow in order to successfully survive just about any stressful inner conflict. From digging in the earth to truly relearning the art of breathing, Linda's guidance is straightforward and simultaneously profound. Not leaving any stone unturned, Linda has dedicated an entire chapter to folks who've found themselves in the challenging role of support, and included numerous sources of additional literature and information.

Linda Manassee Buell has written this book with the compassion and personal landscape of someone who's lived in the cave of fear, and who's triumphantly emerged into the sunshine. ... Read more

Product Description
There's nothing funny about panic attacks . . . or is there? As this problem reaches epidemic proportions in the U.S., two brave women journey to the front line in the battle against panic and return with stories of courage, anxiety, recovery, and just general craziness in a crazy world. Journalists by trade, panic attack sufferers by habit, the authors understand that panic disorder is like a haunted house - the only way out is through it. So they wrote a book that makes those panic ghosts and goblins a little less scary. Organized around first-person accounts, The Panic Diaries investigates what panic is, how people experience it, and how it's treated. The authors also interview some in-the-know people, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and natural health professionals, who offer treatments that are proven to help sufferers overcome their panic attacks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informational, and great read!
6 months ago I was diagnosed with anxiety, stress, panic disorder along with depression. I was unclear as to why this happened and what I was going to do to resume my life. I was 34 and had talked with my doctor a lot as well as my therapist. I just didn't seem to understand everything. When I went looking for books with more insight I found this one. I usually read reviews to what I buy before I buy it. This one had some mixed reviews some of them very petty. One calling this a book more for teens due to how it is written and words used in it. I did not see that as I read it. Yes it has was or telling all about panic in a more easy way then a straight forward, yet this is what makes it such a great read. If you looking for something that isn't a bunch of confusing medical terms and a book you can't really relate to then this isn't your book. If your looking for something that talks to you, helps you understand, and even causes a few tears and laughs this is your book. I recommend it and I plan on letting my family read this book for they do not understand what I'm going through and this too will help them understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Side to CBT
I borrowed this book from the library on my return from OS. Having just started going to CBT in the UK and not being able to afford to continue at the moment I have been looking for helpful books to get me through in the mean time. This book has been wonderful. I have been taking the slowly slowly approach to reading it, which seems to work best. It has helped minimize my panic attacks related to clusterphobia, and helped me deal with them on a daily basis. I'm not sure whether it is the helpful hints, the reasurrance or the calming effect it has on me reading about others experiences. A very helpful CBT compainion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just need to take the edge off...
I had my first panic attack when I turned 35.

I still don't know why.

What I do know is that I thought I was losing my mind, that I had no idea what was wrong with me and that I thought I was all alone with no where to turn.

Too scared to talk to a doctor and too scared of being laughed at if I talked to friends, this is the first book I purchased to try and sort through my feelings about the subject.

All I can say is thank you to the authors.

Now I realize, I am not crazy, I am not alone and I am not afraid to go looking for additional help if my situation becomes worse.

The book is written in a lighthearted style that guides the reader through anecdotal stories of panic attacks in daily life. I'm glad this was my first book on panic attacks because I was worried that I might end up with something that went heavy on medical doctrine or a stress inducing list of junk to memorize.

If you suffer from panic attacks I would also recommend this book as a gift to anyone in your life that is close to you that you want to help understand your condition. It's an easy (sometimes humorous) read that you won't have to feel guilty about asking them to read because it won't feel like work (or a textbook).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good!
I really enjoyed this book.I have panic disorder with agoraphobia.I read the whole thing in one night, and didn't have any anxiety for 3 days after.I then gave it to my family to read so maybe they can understand how I am feeling.I give it 5 stars. It didn't cure me, but it certainly made me feel understood, and kind of added some rational thought to my irrational, anxious thoughts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Panic Lite
A very disappointing book. I have read many books on anxiety and panic disorder over the years, and this is one of the most useless. Nothing new here. The personal stories sound phony and are not in the least bit inspiring. The tone is irritating, as though it were written for 13 year olds - lots of "Yikes!" and "Fun!" Misery does not love company in this case. If you want to spend your money on something worthwhile, try "Overcoming Anxiety for Dummies," or anything by Edmund Bourne. There are loads of good books out there on panic and anxiety - just not this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Earl Campbell's illness
Real "Panic Disorder" is a very difficult illness, often misdiagnosed and, sadly, self treated.Earl, a strapping, awardwinning, pro football player from Texas gives insight into his war with "Panic Disorder"....a must read for anyone who loves or treats or has this disorder, especially men. This is often diagnosed in women, but affects many men, who very often medicate with alcohol.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courage
I turned 40 six months ago and suffered my first panic attack shortly aftewards. I was rushed to the hospital, thinking it was a heart attack. I was lucky. The ER doc diagnosed it correctly as a panic attack.

I went to my family physician the next day and he gave me a thorough exam, then recommended a psychiatrist to help me with my panic attacks. He also recommended I read The Earl Campbell Story. I had no idea who Earl Campbell was, since I am not a sports fan but I read the book.Mr. Campbell, your book really helped me.I found the front of the book very helpful, because it described who you were and how great a football player you were. Then when the panic attacks started, I thought I was reading about my own experience.

I think it took a tremendous amount of courage for you to step forward and write this book. It really helped me and I can't thank you enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration to Me!
Ithought the book gave good detail on Panic Disorder and how it can affect anybody. The first couple of chapters went on to long about how he grew up and gave no information on his disorder until later in the book. I believe the book should have began when he started to develope Panic Disorder.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Be forewarned that panic does not come into this book until page 83 (of 208).Also be forewarned that it's written at maybe a sixth-grade reading level.(Neither of these is necessarily a bad thing.)

It's a simplistic and lengthy testimonial. There are some reconstructed dialogues that feelartificial, some of the chronology is hard to follow, and people appear out of nowhere or disappear after being identified in detail.

The first 82 pages are mainly football, with lots of numbers and stats. There's an entire chapter on his sausage business that reads like a promotional pamphlet:"All of our meals are precooked andspecially sealed with a newly developed technology to keep them fresh. Customers only have to pop them into a microwave oven for three minutes before serving. These meals have become big sellers for us because theyare convenient and taste great" etc. (p. 153). And not only that, but "Today I feel as confident about my ability to make a great-tasting meat product as I used to feel about my ability to run with the football. I think both are God-given talents" (p. 153). There's nothing to tie this to the supposed theme of the book.

We get glimpses of Campbell's "pride" (anger at a doctor's suggestion that he try Prozac, sudden disgust with one who asks him to ingest caffeine as an experiment, lashing out at doctors who, attempting to arrive at a diagnosis, inquire whether he uses drugs), glimpses of his warm feelings, and mere hints at "fear of failure" and an "emotional man". Just when he starts to tell us something interesting, he quits and moves on.

You get the feeling this guy wants to talk about it but he doesn't want to talk about it.

This is also hinted at by some contradictions. In one chapter he can't attend banquets because crowds bother him, but a few pages later he says "My panic disorder has no effect on my ability to function in the business world" (p. 149). If these are both true, some discussion would help.

Many panic sufferers would like to wave this book around as evidence that panicdoes not equate with general wimpiness. It's just disappointing that more substance isn't given here. ... Read more

Product Description

Part cultural history, part sociological critique, and part literary performance, Panic Diaries explores the technological and social construction of individual and collective panic. Jackie Orr looks at instances of panic and its “cures” in the twentieth-century United States: from the mass hysteria following the 1938 radio broadcast of H. G. Wells’s War of the Worlds to an individual woman swallowing a pill to control the “panic disorder” officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980. Against a backdrop of Cold War anxieties over atomic attack, Orr highlights the entanglements of knowledge and power in efforts to reconceive panic and its prevention as problems in communication and information feedback. Throughout, she reveals the shifting techniques of power and social engineering underlying the ways that scientific and social scientific discourses—including crowd psychology, Cold War cybernetics, and contemporary psychiatry—have rendered panic an object of technoscientific management.

Orr, who has experienced panic attacks herself, kept a diary of her participation as a research subject in clinical trials for the Upjohn Company’s anti-anxiety drug Xanax. This “panic diary” grounds her study and suggests the complexity of her desire to track the diffusion and regulation of panic in U.S. society. Orr’s historical research, theoretical reflections, and biographical narrative combine in this remarkable and compelling genealogy, which documents the manipulation of panic by the media, the social sciences and psychiatry, the U.S. military and government, and transnational drug companies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best
Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available.A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias
This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not enough
While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insurmountable Help
I read the book, and am fortunate enough to reside in the same town where Shirley Babior practices.I can't say enough about how she, and the advice in her book, have changed my life.I refer to the book very often because it is an ongoing process to overcome difficult Panic and Anxiety disorder. This book saved me from a future that was certain to be wracked with a lot of unnecessary worry, fear, phobia, and anxieties I thought would never end!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidelines for people who suffer from phobias
