*60 ob/gyn cases with complete discussions
*Clinical pearls highlight key points
*USMLE-style comprehension questions with each case
*Primer on how to approach the patient
*Proven learning system improves shelf exam scores

“Superior to other case file books.”
--Chang-Kun Choi, Medical Student, Midwestern University School of Medicine

“Using clinical scenarios not only makes the reading fun and interesting, but it is far more engaging than sitting down with a bulleted text and reviewing detail after detail. This is a much better way to learn clinical information. I have not read a book like this before, and I certainly have enjoyed it.”
-–Eric Hossler, Medical Student, James H. Quillen College of Medicine

“I LOVED this book!I would recommend this book to all third-year students… The book uses a clinical approach and does not lose sight of the pathophysiology behind the disease -- GREAT preparation for being on the wards! The subject matter is also deceptively detailed, with much more information than one normally finds in a text of case files. The reader can use this book as either a rigorous self-test or a read-through introduction to the subject.Once again - a GREAT text!”
-–Elizabeth Johnston, Medical Student, Emory University ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book.
this is an amazing book. great for learning the material for the rotation as well as the shelf exam (hits on the important things to know...it got me honors).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I am a second year medical student preparing for the boards while taking my courses. I really like this book.It gives a case then after the case has a description of the answer, a detailed explanation of the case, diagnosis, treatment, definitions, etc.It finishes each section with a few multiple choice questions. The chapters are short enough to read one in your"spare time."I recommend this to any medical student that enjoys to read case studies as a complement to their textbook reading.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for 3rd year OB/GYN rotation
This book helped me to honor my 3rd year OB/GYN rotation. I recommend it- easy reading with lots of pearls throughout. I just kept it at my bedside and read a few cases a night. I used this with Blueprints and was very prepared for the shelf exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Efficient Resource for Shelf Exam
Echoing the sentiments of previous reviewers, this book basically has 30-40% of the Ob/Gyn shelf within its pages.A lot of my friends read the book as well and were similarly amazed at its mimcry. Some of the questions seem to directly stem from the 60 cases in this text. You're hurting yourself by NOT reading this.It provides a good foundation for the major scenarios you might encounter in Ob/Gyn.It's particularly effective because the Ob/Gyn shelf is really specialized to the field and doesn't have too many general medicine questions like other clerkship tests.

That said, it should be noted this is not a textbook. You won't really get the ins and outs of fetal monitoring, birth, etc. This book is best utilized about a week from the exam or very early with the intent of RETAINING the specific scenarios.A good book to read to fully flesh out the subject would be Blueprints in Ob/Gyn.

A quick, effective read that's the easiest way to bettering your shelf score. If you enjoy your off time in med school, this is a great way to cram.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for the OB/GYN shelf!
This is by far the best preparation book I've used for the shelf exams. The format, questions, and clinical scenarios are extremely high yield. You can easily get through this book a few days before the exam. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very insufficient
Don't be fooled !
Although the title of this book is "OBGYN for the boards", I'd rather rename it "OBGYN for 1st year med students". The information is very insufficient for a 4th (USA) or 5th year (Canada) resident preparing for the boards.
Don't waste your money....keep it for your vacations !

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cases!
This book made studying a little less painful.Reading straight text just gets boring and I lose my motivation but I actually liked reading these cases and the answers are really good. This is a great book for ob rotation!

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy, quick read, great review.
This review book is ideal in that it is easy to read, you can do so fairly quickly. The book is also essentially a comprehensive review of those topics relevant to the OB/Gyn Shelf Exam.I used it as my sole review source and felt generally prepared for the exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Even Worth a Glance!
Despite the many 5 star reviews for this text, I can without hesitation give it my worst possible rating! This book is childish and simplistic. The questions are dumbed down and will give you very little practice for the USMLE or NBME.Trust me here - stick to NMS or Hacker and Moore and Pre-Test!I'm just finishing off my Obs/Gyne rotation and felt the week I spent on this book was a waste (not to mention my $30!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Ob/Gyn shelf
This was the single best resource I used to prepare for the Ob/Gyn shelf. I only wish that I'd started using it sooner. The chapters are short --- there's a clinical vignette on the first page, followed by some "what would you do next" questions and 3-5 pages of explanation for those questions. At the end of each case is a handful of multiple choice questions. I'd recommend doing 3 or 4 cases each night (it shouldn't take more than an hour) after reading a chapter from a main text like BluePrints. The combination of BluePrints plus Case Files worked very well for me. Good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for the shelf
Despite glowing reviews, I found this book to be of no help on the shelf. It does serve as a good quick reference for cases on the floor, and provides a reasonable broad overview, but you will need much greater detail for the shelf exam. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Volume II Gynecology
This is a second edition of the original German text published in 1997. It's quite surprising that the original text was published so long ago and now the English edition was supposed to be more up to date, as it was published in 2007. Paging through the book, there are many ultrasound pictures that aren't so pretty looking. They still convey the imaging findings but not as visually pleasing as our current sharp ultrasound images as you might expect in a book published in 2007. There are many pictures in the second half of the book using endovaginal 360 degree type coverage which I am not familiar with. Overall this is a good book but for the money, there are better books out there. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This time honoured classic has been re-built completely: after six editions the editor has decided that a radical revision is necessary. The new edition has been developed as a result of intensive consultation with trainees in OB/GYN as to what they want, what they need and how they learn.

The book is organised into two halves covering obstetrics and gynaecology. Within each, the chapters are structured into sections containing pedagogic features such as boxes, highlights and key points for the first time. It contains everything the clinician needs to practice the art of obstetrics and gynaecology and sufficient information to help sub-specialists develop their specific interests. This text is recommended reading for the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology membership examination.

This seventh edition contains 21 new chapters:

  • Anatomy of the Pelvis and Reproductive Tract

  • Placenta and Fetal Membranes

  • Antenatal Care

  • Anaesthesia and Analgesia

  • Recurrent Miscarriage

  • Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Trophoblastic Disease

  • Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis

  • Drugs and Pregnancy

  • PMS

  • Assisted Reproduction
