Very good for a confused parent
I bought this book along with "Up and Down the Worry Hill" and it was very useful, especially as I knew very little about OCD.I would recommend it, especially the part about OCD and School.

The Most Complete Guides for Parents
If your child has OCD, make sure you invest in this book. I purchased several books and this one is hands-down the best no matter what your child's obsessions/compulsions or what stage you are at from first recognizing the disorder to going through the therapy.

As other reviewers have noted, it is easy to read and understand. It is also very complete and includes obsessions/compulsions not covered in other books I have read. It answers questions like "normal vs. OCD: What's the difference" - an important thing for parents to be able to recognize when their child is being themselves and when the OCD monster is affecting them. It also tells you what to expect in the first evaluation, how to navigate CBT (cognitive behavior therapy), and info on medications.
Another very helpful aspect is the school section (I even took the book with me to the teacher conference). It outlines what you should and should not share with the school/teacher and how to approach the whole subject without having your child labeled. It has "Red Flags for OCD in School"- a great thing to share with the teacher. And how to form a partnership with the school to best benefit your child.

All in all, a great and helpful book.

This book is very easy to read.It is very comprehensive.It is very informative.It is objective.It is my constant companion lately.My son's therapist admitted that I know much more about OCD than she does and is now reading the book.

Highly Recommended
This book is outstanding.I found my 12 year old son crying in his room because he knew that something was happening to him that he didn't understand.Soon, thereafter, he wouldn't go outside at night, he was afraid to go to school, the checking rituals were exhausting him, the popups (explained in the book) were frightening to him......all of this developed shortly after he turned 12 years old.Once it began, it felt like each day, something new and confusing washappening to him.Because I have some understanding of OCD, I was able to recognize the symptoms, but I did not know how to specifically help him.He started seeing a counselor, we had other support, I tried to educate myself, using all available avenues, to try to help my son, and our doctor was involved, as well.Although our doctors and counselors are wonderful, ultimately, I spend the most time with my son, and I knew that I would be doing the "work" with my son to help him deal with OCD. This book taught me how to communicate this issue to my son and it worked WONDERS.Within about four months, my son had control over these issues. It did take several months of hard work, but I saw progress with each week It's been 18 months and he has no symptoms.He's functioning absolutely fine in our family and in the community (school, sports, etc.)I've read several books on this subject and this book is what 'turned the key' for us.I read it and then he and I have read sections of it together that pertained to him.He was relieved to know that he is not the only person that deals with this issue, that what he was going through actually had a name, and as soon as we were able to identify it, he and I were able to begin to talk about how to help him. I bought 3 OCD books from Amazon and so happy with all three of them.They are books that you have to keep going back to make sure you understand and doing what it tells you to do for the sake of your child.
OCD is not fun for children with it and theyneed our help to get them out of it if all possible.

Excellent book for parents of a child (no matter the age) who is struggling with OCD.Gives good insight and tips for helping your child along the path to wellness.

Essential, helpful information on OCD and your role as a parent.
This book was recommended by my 9 year old daughter's counselor as a guide for parents and it definitely hits the mark for me. Beginning with 'What is OCD' and moving towards the 'What to do if you suspect OCD', this book is written in a clear, detailed way. I found myself slowly reading, and sometimes re-reading sections of the book prior to moving forward. It's filled with a lot of information. Take your time and soak it in and build on your knowledge.

Eventually you will get to sections of the book that focus on treatment and what parents can do to assist their children in combating OCD. The book alone will not 'fix' OCD, but it helps guide you to recognize it and what you can do; as a parent, to help your child. The book lets you know you are not alone and there is hope for getting your child, family and life back on track and away from OCD's grasp.

I have shared this book with my daughter's grandparents and her teachers. It really has helped us all to gain knowledge as to what is OCD, and how we can not let this bully take away the joyful spirit of those who are dear to us.

Enlightening Book
I found this book by Marie Gius to be very enlightening on the illness of OCD.It was very brave of her to divulge her history with this illness. She did not lay blame on her mother for this disease, she only gave a true and factual account of her life, including her childhood.I believe this book could give consolation as well as insight to anyone who is suffering from this disease.The book was interesting and invoked many emotions while I was reading it.This disease is very confusing for people who do not suffer from it, but Marie tried to give us insight into living with this disease, and I congratulate her on her effort and on her ability to write her feelings down for the help of others!Thank you, Marie!

Well, what can I say? This book is basicallyjust one long whine
I was eager to read this book as I myself am an OCD sufferer, but I admit I was most disappointed. The author is to be commended for her courage in writing this account. It is incredibly hard to share something this personal and debilitating. I applaud her for her willingness to open up about her life. With that said, however, the entire attitude of the book is one big whine. It is poor me, I am the worst case ever. She blames her mother for this disorder several times each chapter. The time line jumps around so much it is hard to follow. The book itself is quite poorly written. She appears not to have had much ERP, the most proven method of providing improvement for OCD sufferers. I do feel sorry for the extent of her illness but she almost wears it as a badge to show how bad off she is and always will be. The mother blaming gets quite old, too, as psychologists generally do not consider what happened during childhood as being of much or any relevance to OCD, a largely biologically based disorder. If you want to know the extent of how disabled a person with OCD can become, then read this account. If you want to know about treatments available and how symptoms of OCD can be greatly lessened and become more manageable, this is definitely not the book for you. I finished the book feeling quite depressed. The author provides no hope.

A personal struggle shared.
Marie Gius and her husband Doug display great courage in sharing with the public their personal battle with Marie's OCD.I had heard of this mental disorder before reading the book, and have had experiences with people suffering from this condition.However, I had no idea of the scope and complexity of this problem or how it controls a person's daily activities and affects others around them.This book takes the reader through Marie's life from early childhood, when she first began experiencing symptoms, through her early efforts to obtain professional help and her struggles to maintain a relationship and career.This book is well written, very readable, and offers readers a rare insight into the mind of someone struggling with this condition.

Amazing Real Life Book on OCD
I found this book to be an amazing study and dialouge about OCD.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was unable to put it down until finished. The author is extremely honest and she brings out the important details about OCD.There are very specific experiences and thoughts that are very heart warming, educational, informative, and real. Marie Gius comes across as a very human, caring person who has endured this disorder and yet is honest and practical on how she communicates the facts.This is a true life experience that is a must read for anyone.

What a testament to human courage and stamina is Living With Severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by retired educator, Marie Gius.This riveting autobiographical narrative is a forthright and ambitious feat on her part.I remember when my husband and I traveled through France on a Eurorail pass in 1970, and we encountered a woman from Belgium who had survived the horrors of World War II.She animatedly told us, "Never forget:Life is a struggle!"Yes, it is a struggle, but most of us do not encounter terrifying obstacles for every waking hour of our existence. Marie Gius reveals an in-depth perspective of the seriousness of OCD, and we the readers are allowed to visit her inner world of turmoil and tremendous suffering.One can only admire her fortitude and intelligence in taking steps, as early as her entrance into college, to educate herself and to seek professional help.

She began to see a Wenatchee psychiatrist.We both loved Marie and wanted to help.I would do the same thing again.
The scenarios of her experiences with psychologists and psychiatrists at various hospitals provide details, facts, and reactions that inspire faith in mental health professionals who are striving to provide sanative measures for sufferers of this debilitating disorder.Marie's own honest accounts and willingness to provide intelligent feedback to her doctors must have been invaluable in ameliorating her condition.
Living with Severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder also offers some beneficial insight into the author's backdrop of complex, yet loving, family relationships and the early development of her OCD.A recurring theme is Marie's inability, at times, to let go of blame and move forward into a more healthful state. Eventually, at the end of the book she describes her relationship with her caring husband, Doug, who is a keen listener and who helps her to examine the role of her father, not only her mother, in the development of OCD.

If you are purchasing this book because you suffer from OCD or have a loved one suffering from the OCD this book offers little to no hope. I myself wanted to see how someone can get out of the hell of sever OCD, and unfortunately Radano overcomes her OCD with help of an extremely experimental surgery. That's a lengthy one
There's no doubt that the author knows a lot about the subject. The book is full with anedoctal examples. They are so many that I sometimes kept wondering if just one psychologist could ever see them all. It's really a complete work, as the title claims, except that it's more a lengthy review than a self-treatment guide. Patients and families will certainly benefit from information, but for recovery they'll have to rely on real therapy - Penzel doesn't deny it, of course - or, at least, obtain a more appropriate "guide".

This was a very informative and helpful book for both therapists and those seeking self-help.

Supportive and realistic
This book is exactly what it says - a complete guide. Very informative, practical help is given, with a strong element of understanding supportiveness at the same time. You can take this book, design a program for recovery, and implement it. Or, if you just want to understand more about the world of an OCD sufferer, you will find plenty of information here. I especially liked the sections covering realistic expectations in recovery, acceptances the sufferer needs to make in living with the disorder, and how to maintain a recovery over the long term. A lifeline to those suffering from OCD or their families, this book is hopeful and realistic at the same time.

An Outstanding Contribution
Obsessive compulsive and related disorders are difficult but not impossible to treat. In this comprehensive and highly readable book, Dr. Penzel covers all of the most important aspects of these conditions. As a nationally recognized expert, the author uses his vast knowledge and experience to assist sufferers, relatives, and clinicians as they confront these challeging problems. Dr. Grayson Rocks!
I've read practically all the self-help OCD books out there and this one is the creme de la creme. It is the only one that truly resonates with me and has helped me to change. I continue to use it in therapy. So many therapists have not been trained to treat OCD properly so this is essential reading for therapists (before they do go ahead and get trained properly ;-)

Very Insightful!
Dr. Grayson's book is an excellent explanation and plan on dealing with OCD.He puts his explanations into such insightful terms I would wonder if he somehow knows what I'm thinking!

A wonderful book and program for someone who is suffering from OCD.
A very close friend of mine is an OCD sufferer and she was actually treated by one of the professionals at Dr. Grayson's practice.Working with her therapist, along with the proper medication monitored by a psychiatrist, were a tremendous help to her.She is now more able to cope with her symptoms.I've read up on OCD, and have found this book to be an excellent resource for sufferers and loved ones of sufferers.Also check out "Tormenting Thoughts and Secret Rituals" by Ian Osborn.

Best book i have seen on ocd
This is best one for OCD. It has explained the orgin and nature of OCD...The answer lies in the question - - THis is what OCD is about.The author discusses several cognitive techniques but also warns not to use some cognitive techniques. He selectively picks up best ones to fit OCD problem.
Also discusses Responsibilty ocd, pure 'O' ocd problem. Lot of techniques tailored for specific forms of OCD.

A fascinating personal/ professional account
This book is guaranteed to be of interest to anyone suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as well as for those living with sufferers.Dr Toates's combination of personal and professional insight into the condition makes for a unique and comprehensive read.The attention to detail in relation to subtle behavioural traits will have any sufferer saying "hey, I do that!" and it is this kind of approach that is so important in making people who live with the "secret illness" know that they're not alone.

Gail Steketee is one of the formost researchers in the field of OCD and its treatment. Her book serves as an excellent handbook for any clinician who treats this disorder. Most clinicians seem to think OCD is rare but it is prehaps the 4 th most common psychiatric disorder, more common then schizophrenia or panic disorder. The treatment of OCD with cognitive behavioral methods has been found to be highly effective ( superior to medication alone) and to have lasting results. More traditional talk therapy has not been found useful in treatment of OCD. For any clinician who treats OCD the critical steps in applying cognitive behavioral therapy are well laid out. Easy to read and understand, question/answer structure
I've just been officially 'diagnosed' with OCD, and found this book to be very helpful to someone 'new' to finding info about OCD. This is the first OCD book I've read, and plan on reading others in the same category soon. The book's structure is a question/answer format.Chapters discuss symptoms, related disorders, diagnosis, causes, medications, various therapies, and other ways to help yourself and how others can help you.It's very easy to read and very detailed... no long case stories (just a few short examples), but rather straightforward information about OCD. Some of the information is repetitive towards the end, but that's not necessarily a bad thing because it fits well into the content. ... Read more

Excellent treatment manual for a therapist
I'm currently a doctoral student in a clinical psychology program and had the opportunity to use this manual with one of my clients. It provides an excellent Psychoeducation section with clear rationale for treatment. A simple and clear treatment guideline is described and sufficient examples are provided. Handouts are good and further drive-in the rationale for treatment. Treatment is essentially Exposure and Relapse Prevention with a primarily behavioral slant, but there is a well-developed cognitive component as well. Homework forms are useful, informative, and easy for the client to follow.

My one complaint is that relevant research literature is not cited, or noted for further information. Most people looking at this manual probably already have that information anyway though.

An encouraging, enlightening and hope-filled place to start
When my child was diagnosed (finally--after years of "knowing" something was wrong, after years of professionals being evasive or rude)this was the first book I turned to, and it filled both me and my child with hope.It's a fantastic overview and resource written in a clear yet intelligent style.The Yale-Brown scale is extremely helpful.The list of medications found to alleviate symptoms was helpful (and occasionally cautionary--a good heads-up for when doctors get goofy perscribing).The list of resources, including newsgroups, web sites, meetings, is great--there are others out there...lots!The section that deals with co-morbid conditions was helpful, too.A great overview, with a tone that will calm a frantic parent, and bring a family up to speed for their newly-diagnosed child--so good that years later, we still have it on our shelf and refer to it often.

Good indepth Help
There seems to be few OCD related books availible in the United Kingdom, I ordered this book from the USA and was not disappointed. We needed a reference book to help with my sons condition, this book certainly fits the bill, Buy It!

Great book on helping kids with OCD!!
This is the only book I've found that covers everything about OCD in kids, including dealing with it in the family and at school. The parts on therapy and medications are very thorough, but it goes way past just the medical stuff. Great book for clinicians and clients and non OCD
As a social worker, I'm working with an OCD client, and this book has been very helpful.We read it together and discussed the chapters.The book is comprehensive, easy to read, and has a healing tone -- not a pathological put down.This book can also be used by people not diagnosed with OCD.There are helpful hints on how to have a less stressful life and be more compassionate.You don't have to have OCD to be working too hard at some task and this books helps all with this dimension of living.

I've got the 1st edition when I was a Clinical Psychology trainee. And now I got this second edition after years of clinical practice. Changes weren't drastic ones, but they were nice one and vital ones.
