Book Description
Arguably the most serious issue facing the food industry is what is now widely recognized as an epidemic in obesity. Food manufacturers are under increasing pressure over both the degree to which they have contributed to the problem and what role they should play in solving it. Drawing on the expertise of some of the worlds leading experts in this area, Food, Diet and Obesity summarizes current research on the causes of obesity, the role of food components in promoting or reducing weight gain, and the strategies manufacturers can adopt to reduce the problem.

After an introductory chapter on global trends in obesity, Part 1 looks at the range of contributing factors to obesity, from nutrient-gene interactions, energy metabolism and physical activity to sensory responses to food, portion size and the psychology of overeating. Part 2 looks at macronutrients and their role in weight gain or loss, with chapters on topics such as energy density, dietary fat, carbohydrates, protein and dietaryfibre. The final part of the book discusses issues in developing effective strategies for weight control, from gaining consumer acceptance of weight-control food products to the role of community-based approaches in preventing obesity.

With its distinguished editor and international team of experts, Food, Diet and Obesity will be a standard work for nutritionists and R&D staff throughout the food industry, as well as all those concerned with understanding and reducing obesity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend
I was very disappointed with this CD.The presenter is very condescending and lacks any compassion, being more interested in placing blame than providing any real solutions. You'd have to be a complete healthy-living neophyte to gain anything from this CD.One of the reasons why I purchased this CD was the review by the veteran teacher - perhaps he's been in the school system too long, as this is no way to present information.Although the info in the book Trim Kids is a big commitment, at least it gives practical and reasonable solutions to help our overweight kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here
Don't waste your money.Speaker is condescending and voice is unpleasant. No new information.Order Trim Kids instead. This is a total waste of your time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Today's Children
As a teacher of almost thirty years, I've seen the problem of obesity in kids grow and grow (no pun intended).I've dealt with tearful "fat kids" and their confused parents. And I've looked for a reasonable, workable, do-able answer.I found it in this CD.

"The Fat Kid's Diet" is now my first recommendation for both parents and their children. It's not a book of recipes; it is a simple, sane lifestyle change that will improve the health of the whole family while allowing the child or children with the weight problem to lose that weight in the safest way possible.

The best of what I've read or heard. If your child or grandchild has a weight problem, or if your whole family is overweight, by this audiobook! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
My doctor recommended this book in a vain hope of getting me to change my eating habits. Not a good investment. It takes 5 chapters to get to the central idea which is - only eat when you are hungry. The rest of the book simply restates this bit of wisdom in different ways over and over again. So here is my recommendation - "Don't eat when you are not hungry". There I saved you 10 dollars!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from the diet roller coaster!
In this book "Diets Still Don't Work" Bob Schwartz, PHD
teaches you why diets dont work, what the diet mentality is, why you
may not be able to keep weight off and more. You complete a number of
written exercises. These are designed to help you realize the reasons
you have excess weight and your attitudes towards eating. As you
progress through the book you learn the habits of naturally slim
people and how you can mimic these behaviors so they become second
nature and you too will be naturally slim! By the end of the book you
have a list of goals to accomplish other than focusing on weight, know
how to naturally lose weight and keep it off and decide if you are
ready to make the commitment. This book published in 1990 is the
sequel to Bob's original book "Diets Don't Work".Bob has
since updated and revised the "Diet's Don't Work" book
(published 1996). Both books cover essentially the same information
with only slight variation. I recommend reading one or the other to
help you get off the diet roller coaster!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I first read this book about six years ago when I gained 25 pounds as a college freshman.I realized then that I was eating compulsively and lost 10 pounds almost immediately when I focused on the principles in the book. I just picked it up again when I found myself eating without thinking andgaining weight again, and it was so easy to get back to a healthy way ofthinking and eating. This book makes so much sense and works becauseyou're not depriving yourself, and you look at food in a whole new light. I really recommend it to anyone with weight or eating issues. It has doneso much for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This worksfor me, and for my menopausal friends
This is the only weight loss book that "worked" for me when I actually followed it. I have had a hard time losing weight even when I followed other books religiously... This book explained so many of the reasons why I had weight that seemed resistant to going away! The book is packed with info on how to deal with your own individual health issues - or how to avoid them in the first place!

This was going pretty well for me- and then I traveled quite a bit in the spring, summer and fall and it broke my routines. The principles are not that hard to follow - but you do actually have to follow them most of the time for it to work - Lesson learned.I decided today that I wanted to get focused in this way again...and that is why I came back here - where I bought it.This book has also helped another friend who had also had many problems trying to lose weight.signed Mary K.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Leptin
I enjoyed this book and found it to be very informative and helpful with problems that I and other family members have been having. Would recemmend this book to people who are trying to loose weight and have tried every diet or not to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars lots of science
The science in this book is very technical but fascinating if you like that kind of stuff. (I do) All the research is footnoted to many many new studies. The exact mechanisms of your hormones and relationship to food/fuel are disected at length. Who knew fat cells have their own voice in metabolism? A powerful voice? The diet itself is straight from the 1950s. No snacking! No large meals! no eating after dinner! less carbs, more veggies & no desserts! You must exercise! This advise is not rocket science here. This said, I have followed the diet for two weeks after losing 20 lbs on Atkins then South Beach. I was at a plateau for 5 weeks. I have lost 3.5 more pounds on this diet and my skin looks wonderful.Dieting is very hard on my complexion, I get grey, troubled skin and dark eye circles along with a smaller size. I have 7-10 pounds to go, so I am not obese or unhealthy as the examples in the book often are. Mr.Richards gets a bit preachy and heavy handed at times. He seems to assume we are all fat stupid processed junk-food eating machines with a cola addiction and no exercise at all. I think this is a sound lifestyle diet but you will not be able to do it 100% if you have a social life. The rigid 3 meals only, spaced exactly 6-7 hours apart is easily derailed. (Friday happy hour?, Good friend has baked a specialty when you drop by to return a book at 3 PM? Valued employee offers you special homemade native Honduran health drink of rice, nuts & cinamon at 10:30 AM?) Still, over all I feel great and am doing the plan about 80% of the time. I hope the science of letting the liver, pancreas, and other organs "rest" between meals is as good as "6 small meals every 3 hours to keep the metabolism stoked" was for the last 10 years. If you like trying new diets, try this one. It does work. The added health benefits to persons with problems I don't share may be the deciding factor. Mr. Richards does promote his own pricey suppliment line heavily in the book. I might try it, but a 20 day supply is $113. This is a couple grand a year!

4-0 out of 5 stars Way too much info
I read. A lot. I love all books, especially health related books and this one made sense of everything I do, why I do it, and my habits. Its like the book was written about me.

the down side, the info was too over whelming. It was all worth reading, so I forged on, but I had a head ache by the time I was done. the info in this book is, to me anyway, very important for it reflexed so much of me, but I really wish is was easier to read. I know he came out with a second book, but I'm afraid to buy it. I'm hoping its a easier to understand version.

5-0 out of 5 stars What everyone should know about Leptin!
This the first book that I have read from cover to cover in years. Maybe its because I am interested in decreasing the effects of Type 2 diabetes that run rampant in my family. I am third gereration diabetic. It showed me that there are more people with this type of disorder. ie (leptin resistance/insulin resistance). My wife has high blood pressure and fibermyaliga. It is leptin resistance/insulin resistance. Only her blood sugar is never high. She can not understand why she can not loose weight. I know why, she doesnt eat breakfast, loves carbs i.e. potatos, bread, noodles, etc. ... Read more
