Ocean science combines direct observation of this environment with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control it. Oceanographers are explorers as well as scientists, and many of the world's oceans are yet to be explored. Students who have already developed a special interest in biology, chemistry, geology or physics, can choose marine biology or applied marine biology, marine chemistry, geological oceanography, etc. Students who have a strong interest in biology can combine this with chemical or physical oceanography in marine biology or oceanography, while those who are more interested in physical science can choose ocean science, which offers a wide choice of courses across the full range of disciplines. First of all, however, you need a B Sc degree in one of the above sciences. Do not make the mistake of getting a B Sc in oceanography right off the bat.     Extractions: Jason 1's oceanography mission to monitor global climate interactions between the sea and atmosphere reached another major milestone this past week with the successful handover of day-to-day operations from the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. With the handover, JPL is now responsible for around-the-clock real-time monitoring of Jason 1's health and status, and for generating and uploading weekly stored command sequences to the spacecraft. These sequences contain data for mission planning, payload commanding, navigation, ground station acquisition and routine maintenance functions. The French Space Agency's Satellite Control Center in Toulouse, France, will continue to perform spacecraft engineering and navigation tasks. Both organizations will be jointly responsible for processing mission science data. "Jason's measurement performance to date has been excellent," said Dr. Lee-Lueng Fu, Jason project scientist at JPL. "The early mission phases have been very smooth. This success is due in large part to the hard work and outstanding cooperation between the U.S. and French teams, who continue to work together to leverage experience and efficiencies gleaned from a decade of joint Topex/Poseidon operations. We look forward to continuing to work with the French to establish routine mission operations." Much like its Topex/Poseidon predecessor, the Jason program's shared operations management approach is designed to maximize efficiencies and make the most of the two space agencies' differing program roles and expertise. The French Space Agency managed Jason 1 satellite development, engineering and delivery from the French aerospace company Alcatel, so the program's early post-launch checkout phases were conducted by the French. NASA, by contrast, is responsible for two of the mission's three ground tracking stations in Wallops Island, Va., and Poker Flats, Alaska, (the other is in Aussaguel, France), so JPL has responsibility for oversight of day-to-day routine mission operations.

    Extractions: The joint NASA/French Space Agency oceanography satellite Jason 1 has reached its operational orbit and begun six months of instrument calibrations with its sister spacecraft, Topex/Poseidon. Mission flight controllers at France's Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales' (CNES) Satellite Control Center, Toulouse, France, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., last week commanded Jason 1 to fire its thrusters and lower itself into its operational orbit of 1,337 kilometers (830 miles). Jason 1 is now approximately one minute (approximately 370 kilometers or 230 miles) ahead of the Topex/Poseidon satellite, on an identical ground track. Launched December 7, 2001 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., Jason 1 was initially inserted into a 1,327 kilometer (823 mile) orbit 10 kilometers (6 miles) below Topex/Poseidon. A series of thruster maneuvers over the past five weeks gradually placed Jason 1 into its current orbit. Checkout of the spacecraft and its instrument payload is now complete. All instrument and spacecraft functions and the operations systems at the French space agency and JPL are functioning nominally.

Texas A&M University's research vessel, the Gyre, is a floating laboratory and learning environment, and the phrase "all hands on deck" well-describes the teamwork necessary for a successful cruise.     Extractions: Southampton Oceanography Centre scientist Dr. John Gould has recently worked with scientists in the United States and Europe to map sub-surface water circulation in the north eastern North Atlantic. The results were published in the 10th October issue of ‘Nature’. This was their first measurement of the currents of the northern North Atlantic below the ocean surface. Circulation in this part of the Atlantic is important not only to the local climates of America and Europe but affects the global climate and climate change. Some 200 floats drifting with the currents took measurements at two depths, near 1km and 2km, their positions acoustically tracked by sound signals transmitted from moored sources. At depths of 1km, the ocean is influenced by water from the Mediterranean, at 2km by water from the Labrador Sea west of Greenland. A key finding was how the seafloor topography constrains circulation patterns well above the bottom, in particular the eastward flow from the Labrador Sea is confined to fracture zones, narrow gaps in the mid-Atlantic Ridge. In February this year Dr David Vaughn of the British Antarctica Survey will be using Southampton Oceanography Centre's Autosub to investigate under the cavity beneath Pine Island Glacier, one of the fastest Antarctic ice streams. Satellites show that the grounded portion of the glacier thinned by up to 1.6m per year from 1992 to 1999. A large iceberg, 42 by 17 kilometres, broke off the Pine Island Glacier in early November 2001.

    Extractions: Professor Jochem Marotzke of the Southampton Oceanography Centre is to lead a six-year project recording changes taking place in the Atlantic. The research is funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council as part of the RAPID Climate Change Programme. Marotzke is a modeller of international status. He fears that in a warmer world, rainfall would increase and this extra fresh water could disrupt deep-sea convection. Fresh water could act like a lid to inhibit the release of heat and reduce the amount of warm water transported northwards. Maybe even stopping the Conveyor Belt. A key question is the depth at which the cold water returns. This information will then be used in computer models to provide a series of different scenarios. Other SOC scientists have also been awarded funding for research into other aspects of rapid climate change. Dr Sheldon Bacon will be looking at millennial thermohaline circulation variability. Professor Harry Bryden is extending the time series of Atlantic Meridional Overturning backwards in time using historical measurements. Peter Challenor will be assessing the probability of rapid climate change. Simon Josey is looking at the role of air-sea forcing in causing rapid changes in the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation and Dr Neil Wells will be determining heat transfer and storage and their changes in the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation.
