Extractions: Eric L. Mills This is an updated version of a paper first published in Earth Science History 12 (1993), 2-4. The reference books and monographs following have been selected to aid teachers and beginning students of the history of oceanography. The list is based on two principles, either that the publications are readily available in major libraries, or that they have not been superseded as sources of information. The periodical literature is not included because of its extent. A good source of information on journal articles published between 1913 and 1975 is the Isis cumulative bibliography (ed. M. Whitrow and J. Neu); it is added to annually by the Critical Bibliographies accompanying the journal Isis.

Lugo-Fernandez Description: Background Deepwater leasing is advancing at an accelerated pace. This pace is fueled by technological advances (extended drilling, 3-D seismic, enhanced computer and graphic capabilities), new geological provinces (sub-salt plays and deepwater), and the deepwater Royalty Relief Act. We expect deepwater exploration and development will progress rapidly under stimuli of high flow rates and technological advances. A substantial amount of physical oceanographic data can be found at MMS, other Federal agencies, universities, and industry. These data represent a valuable resource for identification and cataloging of phenomena and processes in deepwater; however, they are widely dispersed among the various repositories. Objectives The objectives of this study are to create an inventory of physical oceanographic data located at MMS, universities, other Federal agencies and national laboratories, and the oil and gas industry; compile this information into a single database on a CD-ROM; conduct an analysis and interpretation of these data based on analytical solutions to produce a catalog of physical processes deserving further study; produce a climatology if data allow; and provide design criteria and constraints for future field and numerical modeling efforts.

Extractions: I received an undergraduate BSc (Hons - 1st class) degree from the University of Melbourne and received my doctorate from Monash University, Melbourne. Since arriving at ADFA in July 1999 I have enjoyed teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and continued to pursue my research interests in the northern regions of Australia and Canada. Research I draw on the cultural and historical sub-disciplines of geography to research a number of issues including environmental management regimes in northern regions, co-management partnerships between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples, and the analysis of frontier relations and landscapes in the British New World. Extractions: This project examines the labour export of Filipino nurses, and through this some of the major benefits, shortcomings and paradoxes involved in labour export. The role of the state in the production and training of nurses for domestic and international labour markets is examined, and the extent to which this action has thereby fostered or undermined national development is assessed. (c) Globalisation and individual life choices. This project examines individual responses to global demand for short-term migrant workers in one occupational sector: nursing. By focusing on individual motivations for the choice of career and for obtaining overseas employment, we gain an insight into the extent to which domestic labour market distortions are the result of the global demand for labour and of government sponsorship of labour export. In addition, this project investigates how individuals decide to become nurses as part of an income generating strategy which focuses on global rather than domestic labour markets. In this context, I also examine the encouragement which the migrant worker receives from family and friends to seek employment overseas, and assess the extent that globalising forces are impacting on decisions made at the micro-level.
