Extractions: World Data Center (WDC) for Oceanography is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58, the World Data Center System functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). WDC for Oceanography, Silver Spring, is collocated with, and operated by, the U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC). In accordance with principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Oceanography acquires, catalogues, and archives data, publications, and data inventory forms and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. To improve user access, the WDC provides copies of data it receives to its counterparts, World Data Center for Oceanography (Obninsk, Russia) and World Data Center for Oceanography (Tianjin, China). Oceanographic data contributed to the WDC become automatically available to scientific investigators in any country. Thus, there can be no restrictions or limitations placed on data exchanged through the WDC system. However, for certain types of data, the exchange of inventories of available data in a WDC subcenter may be considered acceptable in lieu of the transfer of the actual data sets.

The collection is especially strong in regional Northwest fisheries material, including documents from the UW Fisheries Research Institute, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration including the National Marine Fisheries Service, Washington Sea Grant, and from several agencies of the Canadian government. In addition, the library contains many reports and statistical compilations from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Extractions: Co-operation with other research groups on a national as well as an international level is frequently taking place. The objective is to produce and use knowledge on processes, parameterisations and forcing functions, applicable in forecast, diagnostic and climate models as well as in analysis procedures for remote sensing imagery. Below is given some fields of interest the group are presently engaged in A NOAA image of the northern Baltic Sea from March, 17, 1997 showing land fast ice as yellow and pack ice as pink. In the operational work, satellite information and surface observations are integrated with these models through the ICEMAP system, an advanced computer system for map analysis and presentation. Within the Swedish-Finnish winter navigation research programme remote sensing applications are developed for ice mapping, ship routing and icebreaking operations mainly in the Baltic, but occasionally also in the Arctic region. Work is concentrated on NOAA/AVHRR and SAR imagery from ERS and Radarsat satellites. These images are a major data input to the daily ice chart, which also is used for initialisation purposes of the forecasting model.

Similar marine-related coursework and research are offered in the Departments of Economics and Geography and in the College of Engineering.
