3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was extremely disappointed with this book.First of all it's tiny and offers little history or context beyond what could be found in news reports.I saw no special insider information that couldn't be ascertained elsewhere. Also, there are some facts that he completely affirms (Dipendra was indeed drunk) while other scholars have refuted these claims. There is no critical analysis and it reads like a short synopsis. The one plus of the book and only reason it didn't receive one star was it is loaded with colour pictures of the people, places, and events. There are no other books that offer such a plethora of visuals of the Royal Massacre. However if you're interested in the events, history, and facts I would suggest Massacre at the Palace: The Doomed Royal Dynasty of Nepal by Jonathan Gregson. ... Product Description
The historic events that took place in Nepal in the spring of 1990 have yet to be forgotton. A broad-based democracy movement succeeded in removing the 28-year-old Panchayat system after a campaign that lasted only six weeks. Five months later a new constitution was promulgated and, just over a year after the ending of the agitation, the Nepali Congress party secured a majority in the general election. This study contains eight essays by Western academics that reflect on the changes that occurred in the kingdom as the decade began and on the circumstances that produced these changes. As the events of 1990 pass into history, this book looks back in an attempt to understand them, and to draw lessons for the future of Nepal. ... Read more

Product Description
Will Tuladhar-Douglas sheds new light on an important branch of Mahayana Buddhism and establishes the existence, character and causes of a renaissance of Buddhism in the fifteenth century in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. He provides the basis for the historical study of Newar Buddhism as one distinct tradition among the many that comprise Indic Buddhism. Through a thorough study of the relevant texts in the classical Himalayan languages (Sanskrit, Newari, Tibetan and Nepali), the book puts forward a new thesis about how the Newars legitimated and reinvented their tradition by devising new concepts of canonicity, as such it will appeal to scholars of the history and philology of Buddhism. ... Product Description
After John Hunt's successful 1953 expedition he wrote in his diary that at least the Everest story was finished. In fact, in had scarcely begun. The first ascent was the end of a chapter but far from the end of the story. Since those days, well over 300 men and women have stood on the summit of the world's highest mountain, some of them several times, seeking new routes, faster times-or simply to be numbered among the elite who have stood on the roof of the world.

This complete history, updated through 1998, tells the truth about many of the world's mountaineering heroes, about the incompetence, the pettiness, and rages as well as the courage, skill, and altruism that have gone into attempts to climb the mountain. By giving the heroes a human dimension the author has succeeded in making their achievements even more impressive than before.

With color and b&w photos. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
At first, I was a bit sceptic about this book. I thought it would be another detailed-and-boring book about conquest of highest mountain, a bit of sensationalism, otherwise dry. But, after just few pages, I changed my thought completely. It was not dry, at all, it has many, really interesting information, which are not here just to build interest and boist author's knowlege. Author often express his thinking about some people in rather straight way, which I find more useful than writing just about their "purest virtues" - all people have flaws, and these are often very expressed in such extreme situations. It gives more information on first three British expeditions than one specialized book on this subject, I've read before, as well as on first succesful expedition in 1953. These expeditions are covered very well. Expeditions 1980 to present are a bit less covered, which is understandable as they took place after first edition of book was published. I also noticed certain degree of reservation vs non-Western climbers; it seems as author wishes not to offend anyone, but deeply in soul he has some doubts about their honesty. That's why I can't give 5th star to this one. Otherwise, I recommend it to everyone interested in mountain climbing history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exhausting Everest
Walt Unsworth's history of Everest is certainly comprehensive. One might say exhaustive. Every attempt on the world's highest mountain from the pre-war British expeditions (which are covered in great detail) to the commercial climbs of the 1990s (which are not) are recorded and put in context. When it comes to climbing history, I doubt that this weighty tome can be bettered. My only gripes are that the ordering of the history (not strictly chronological) is a little difficult to follow - unless one reads the whole 700+ pages in order, and, although admittedly meant as a mountaineering history, there could have been more geographical detail on the features of the mountain (though the maps of ascent routes are very good), and there could have been more analysis of individual acheivements and the thorny issues that have surrounded climbing. Conclusion: brilliant encyclopedia; a little short on criticism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about climbing Everest.
Well-written, comprehensive, shrewd in it appraisals, concise in its descriptions of the manifold climbs, and not afraid to treat the politics, squabbles and jealousies that surrounded so many of the events described. The last few chapters do become monotonous, offering too much of a goodthings, but the book is superb on the important climbs and climbers:Mallory, Irvine, Hillary, Shipton, Messner, and even outsiders like MauriceWilson are brought vividly to life. This book will stand as the standardtreatment of the pursuit of the Everest Summit. The snowboarders, paragliders and skiers as well as the commercial expeditions havevulgarized it all, but this book brings us back to a time when the sacredand mysterious mountain stood in aloof resistance to a heroic band ofspecial men.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
Walt Unsworth has provided an excellent historical text. The descriptions are vivid with sufficient attention to details that paint clear pictures of the events surrounding Everest. The background information about thebureaucratic bunglings of the British is intriguing and Unsworthmasterfully builds to the climax of the first triumphant ascent.I haveread several books on Everest and this document helps to put so many of thepieces together and give the reader correct perspective.

1-0 out of 5 stars not exactly accurate...
It was pretty appalling to read that in '78 Everest was climbed by:

'Polish houswife called Wanda Rutkiewitz'

She was neither a housewife nor her name was Rutkiewitz. In fact her name was Rutkiewicz, she held electronics engineering degree and was one of the most accomplished female climbers in the world (first female ascent of K2 among others).

Hope the rest of the book is more accurate. ... Read more

THE DIKAST8 OF GREECE. The development of the jury may justly be said to measure the march of civilization. "In the early stages of society . . . causes are decided by persons of station and authority, without reference to any supposed special qualification on their part; it is only as civilization advances and laws become more complicated, that the study and application of them assumes the form of a distinct profession." Among the Oriental nations, no traces of jury trial are discoverable. With the Jews and Phoenicians (who may be taken as fair representatives) the administration of justice was monopolized by the priests, who were judges both of law and fact,' paying but little deference1 Best, Ev. 6 83, note. "For all manner of [civil] trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing which another chal- lengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbor." Exodus, XXII. 9.The judges here referred to must not be confounded with Samuel and his fifteen predecessors (among whom Deborah), who under that appellation directed the affairs of Palestine at intervals during the four and a half centuries between the death of Joshua and the reign of Saul. Their office "was rather that of the military dictator, raised on an emergency to the command of the national forces. What his judicial functions coul... ... Read more

Chapters: Wars Involving Nepal, Gurkha War, Nepal During World War Ii. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 22. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Gurkha War (18141816), sometimes called the Gorkha War or the Anglo-Nepalese War, was fought between the Kingdom of Nepal (now Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal) and the British East India Company as a result of border tensions and ambitious expansionism. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816, which ceded around a third of Nepal's territory to the British. The Shah era of Nepal began with the invasion of Kathmandu valley, which consisted of the capitals of Malla confederacy that ruled Nepal during the medieval era of Nepal. In 1767, a request to the British for help by the Nepalese Malla confederacy under threat from Gorkha invasion resulted in an ill-equipped and ill-prepared expedition numbering 2,500 led by Captain Kinloch. The expedition was a disaster; the Gorkha army easily overpowered those who had not succumbed to malaria or desertion. This ineffectual British force provided the Gorkhas with firearms and filled them with suspicion, causing some to underestimate their future opponents. The invasion of Nepal resulted with Gorkha kingdom being renamed as Nepal and the shift of the capital of the kingdom from Gorkha to Kathmandu. Also, the invasion of economically sound medieval Nepal provided the Gurkha army economic support for furthering their martial practices throughout the region. The martial campaign in eastern region was largely a failure. After a number of defeats by the Limbuwan army, the Gurkha army finally made peace treaty with Limbuwan and incorporated the Limbuwan states into Nepal under a mutual pact. In the west, all rulers as far as the Kali River had submitted or been replaced by 1790. Fa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=562348 ... Read more
