Product Description
There is a growing international interest in and concern about natural resource economics and the environment. The economic activities of humans, during the last 200 years in particular, have had a profound impact on the environment. Reckless depletion of the world's forest resources, fish stocks and fossil fuel deposits has raised many moral as well as political questions. Furthermore, environmental problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect of atmospheric pollution and destruction of the earth's ozone layer are causing wide concern internationally. This book looks in detail at the history of economic though on natural resources and the environment, the economics of fisheries, forestry, mining, petroleum, coal and natural gas deposits, there are also chapters devoted to environmental degradation and the economics of the world's natural wonders. A key element in the book's contents is the application of the author's own theory of modified discounting to specific examples of natural resource depletion."Economics of natural resources" and the environment provides information, detailed analyses, projections and theories which are relevant to the work of environmental scientists, agricultural economists, fisheries scientists, marine biologists and managers in the forestry, fishing mining and petroleum industries. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Written by renowned experts in the field, Sampling Strategies for Natural Resources and the Environment covers the sampling techniques used in ecology, forestry, environmental science, and natural resources. The book presents methods to estimate aggregate characteristics on a per unit area basis as well as on an elemental basis. In addition to common sampling designs such as simple random sampling and list sampling, the authors explore more specialized designs for sampling vegetation, including randomized branch sampling and 3P sampling.

One of the book's unique features is the emphasis on areal sampling designs, including plot/quadrat sampling, Bitterlich sampling, line intersect sampling, and several lesser known designs. The book also provides comprehensive solutions to the problem of edge effect. Another distinguishing aspect is the inclusion of sampling designs for continuums, focusing on the methods of Monte Carlo integration.

By presenting a conceptual understanding of each sampling design and estimation procedure as well as mathematical derivations and proofs in the chapter appendices, this text promotes a deep understanding of the underpinnings of sampling theory, estimation, and inference. Moreover, it will help you reliably sample natural populations and continuums. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Time for a New Editor
I used this book for an upper-level environmental economics course. Most of the material in the book was relevant, but tended to be biased towards Kahn's views on the subjects discussed.

Getting through the chapters without cringing was, however, a task in itself. There were more spelling, grammar, and basic syntax errors than I've ever seen in a textbook.Supply and demand graphs (the starting point of all economics) would have mislabeled axes, quotes would be left without close quotation marks, and some of the information presented was just down-right irrelevant. One of my favorites was a review question in one of the later chapters that simply said, "Prove footnote 8."

You would think that this being a THIRD edition, some editors would have found some of the very numerous errors in this book. I'm an undergrad with a weak English background and I was picking them out every few pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Economic Approach to Environmental and Natural Resources
While getting a little long in tooth, this text is an excellent introduction to environmental economics. Unlike many texts in this area, the methodology used in this text is quite similar, although less mathmatically rigorous, to presentations used in graduate studies. ... Read more

Product Description

Reduction of poverty is a tremendous and persistent challenge for the global community. Given that the livelihood of millions is at stake, there is an urgent need to reconsider the causes of and the remedies for poverty. Poverty and its reduction are closely linked to the natural-resources base. The quality and bounty of the local environment certainly affect living conditions of the poor and their poverty is often seen as a contributing factor to the degraded condition of the local environment. Teasing apart the direction of causality in this resource–poverty nexus is a serious empirical challenge.

This book contributes to an improved understanding of the economic dimensions of environmental and natural-resource management and poverty alleviation. The ten chapters of the book offer an overview of the current knowledge concerning the relation between poverty, environment and natural-resource use. Three sides of the debate receive particular attention. First, the relation between resource use and poverty is discussed from a theoretical point of view. Second, it is questioned whether payments for environmental services or considering values of resources can be an effective tool for stimulating both sustainable resource use and poverty alleviation. Third, alternative strategies to break the land degradation–poverty cycle are discussed.

Product Description
The chapters collected here explore a number of differentissues, including the operation of the tariff-rate quotas establishedunder the Uruguay Round Agreement, the implications of sanitary andphytosanitary restrictions on trade, and the growing controversy overgenetically modified organisms. In addition, several chapters analyzethe interaction between agricultural trade and environmental concerns.

The relative prosperity in U.S. agriculture that attended the passageof the Federal Agriculture Improvement and Reform Act of 1996 wasfollowed by a general decline in U.S. agricultural prices from 1998 to2000. This trend in declining prices continues through the year 2001,despite the movement toward more liberalized agricultural trade. Tradeliberalization has been the result of a variety of factors, includingthe implementation of the Uruguay Round Agreement, and theestablishment of a variety of regional trade agreements, such as theNorth America Free Trade Agreement. Needless to say, in the face offalling agricultural prices and increasingly liberalized agriculturaltrade, the agricultural policy scene is an extremely complex one, bothlocally and globally. This volume does not pretend to offer a single, systematicprescription for what the next agricultural policy should be. Rather, the arguments and analyses contained herein are intended to highlightseveral issues that must be considered in the continuing debates onagricultural policy. ... Read more

Product Description
The subject of this volume is the human economy and itscoevolutionary relationship with the natural world. This relationshipis examined in three broad types of societies; hunter--gatherers,agriculturalists, and modern market economies. A growing body ofscientific evidence has made it clear that the current human impact onthe environment is far above the level that can be maintained withoutcausing profound changes in the biophysical world to which we belong. The new fields of ecological economics and evolutionary economics canhelp us understand the relationship between the economy, society andthe environment and may help us to formulate effective policies tomanage these changes.
