Product Description
This comprehensive and popular textbook is a core text for undergraduate students of environmental economics, and also appeals to geographers and environmentalists. The book deals fully with the orthodox theorems of the economics of pollution and optimal depletion rates for natural resources. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pareto optimum
The authors give a very good insight on the economics of the environment and polution. How a pareto optimum is received by the benefits and costs of polution. Also how innovation and tax affects production and polution. I am not a student but just interested in economics. The graphs make it understandable and a good book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Resource models explained
A super helpful book for non-econ, calculus-literate students of environmental science. For environmental econ students, here's an excellence reference book that explains the basic models more thoroughly than most other environmental econ books. Also includes a reasonable amount of bibliographical information to start off research in the discipline. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classical Work on International Regimes and Institutions
Oran Young defines international institutions as special arrangements in response to collective action problems in international cooperation. In regard to regimes, on the other hand, he accepts at first international regimes as social institutions since they are products of human activity. This formulation eventually facilitates the possibility of regime change as independent from power and distribution of capabilities. In his criticism of the realist concepts of institutions, Young follows the argument; hegemon's role in international regimes is an exception not a rule or a general pattern. In this respect, he mentions three types of regime formation unlike to hegemonic stability theory, which accounts only hegemon or coercive power in this process. Regimes can be spontaneous, negotiated or imposed institutions while these three categories of institutions are not mutually exclusive. First two types of regime formation do not necessitate any hegemon.Coercive power or hegemon may be significant for just imposed regimes. Young also argues that hegemon may be important only for the transformation of imposed regimes not for spontaneous or negotiated regimes. In this formulation of international regimes, as mentioned before, power is not sufficient condition for regime change. Both exogenous (international system, distribution of capabilities, power, prevailing technology etc.) and endogenous (domestic politics, inner dynamics or internal contradictions of regimes etc.) factors can lead to regime transformation. It is also distinctive in Young's examination of regimes in contrast to the realist formulation of regimes that he evaluates these institutions are crucial at both domestic and international level. They are not epiphenomena (of power) since they are important as independent variables for international cooperation. In addition to these theoretical arguments International Cooperation has also three case studies. They are in the issue areas of marine fisheries and deep seabed mining, nuclear accidents, and arctic shipping. In all three case studies Young emphasizes the importance of regimes as social institutions for preservation and governance of natural resources and environment. He also considers that regional regime arrangements would be more effective and less costly than international regimes. Overall, Oran Young's work can be considered as a classical work on international regimes. Henceforth, it can be deemed as a must reading in this field. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
"An excellent book. The editors are to be congratulated for assembling an impressive group of contributors, for framing the topic just right, and for making the volume coherent and fluent. Its strength is in giving the historical perspective and showing that the different views have a basis in both fact and theory."—Scott Barrett, Johns Hopkins University
"A popular theme that won't go away. The book includes interesting new topics and reflects the analytical progress that the discipline of economics has made in the last two decades. The variety exhibited by the papers will also make the book useful for an audience extending beyond economics; for example, to public affairs."—Gardner Brown, University of Washington
In this volume, a group of distinguished international scholars provides a fresh investigation of the most fundamental issues involved in our dependence on natural resources. In Scarcity and Growth (1963) and Scarcity and Growth Reconsidered (1979), researchers considered the long-term implications of resource scarcity for economic growth and human well-being. Scarcity and Growth Revisited examines these implications with 25 years of new learning and experience. It finds that concerns about resource scarcity have changed in essential ways.
In contrast with the earlier preoccupation with the adequacy of fuel, mineral, and agricultural resources and the efficiency by which they are allocated, the greatest concern today is about the Earth's limited capacity to handle the environmental consequences of resource extraction and use. Opinion among scholars is divided on the ability of technological innovation to ameliorate this "new scarcity." However, even the book's more optimistic authors agree that the problems will not be successfully overcome without significant advances in the legal, financial and other social institutions that protect the environment and support technical innovation.
Scarcity and Growth Revisited incorporates expert perspectives from the physical and life sciences, as well as economics. It includes issues confronting the developing world as well as advanced industrialized societies.

Product Description

Game Theory has become one of the main analytical tools for addressing strategic issues in the field of economics and is increasing its influence in other fields of social sciences. With the increased level of extraction of natural resources and pollution of environments, game theory gains its place in the literature and it is more and more seen as a tool for policy makers and not only for theoreticians.

The book is structured into four parts dealing with the management of natural resources, the negotiation aspects of water management, water allocation through pricing and markets, and how conflicts and regulation shape the management of the environment. The first part explores game theory concepts applied to fisheries and grazing lands, which are two important natural resources. In the next two parts, several game theory methodologies are considered in the negotiation approach to water management and approaches to water pricing and markets. The last section looks at environmental protection as the end process of the interplay between conflict and regulation.

This book includes chapters by experts from developing and developed countries that apply game theory to actual issues in natural resources and the environment. As such the book is extremely useful for graduate students and technical experts interested in the sustainable management of natural resource and the environment. It is also relevant to all Game Theory and Environmental Economics students.
