Product Description
Navajo saddle blankets are among the most under-appreciated art forms in the American Southwest, the Cinderella of Navajo textiles. Saddle blankets have played a key role in Navajo life both as utilitarian objects and as a force in the economic sustainability of modern Navajo life. They represent a material link between Navajo weavers and traders. This modest textile has found a context in the cattle industry, inside rural cabins, on the floors of eastern bungalows, on the walls of art museums, and even on horseback. It has served countless cultural and utilitarian demands placed on it over the last century and a half, with no sunset in sight. ... Read more

Product Description

The brilliant visionary yarn paintings of the shaman-artist Jose Benitez Sanchez emerge transformed into two-dimensional form from fleeting, sublime visionary experiences triggered by the complex chemistry of the divine peyote cactus. Benitez's visions are of the Huichol universe in Mexico's rugged Sierra Madre Occidental, as that world came into being in the First Times of creation and transformation and in the ongoing magic of a natural environment that is alive and without firm boundaries between the here and now and the ancestral past.

Modern yarn paintings—more than 30 in the University of Pennsylvania Museum's collection are illustrated here—have their roots in the sacred art of communication with numberless male and female ancestors and native deities, related in the two remarkable Huichol origin myths also presented here to shed some light on Native American culture and provide some understanding of the religious experience that informs it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art and Peyote Anthropology
Shamanistic art the world over is punctate (which I think is related to the awareness of the fabric of retinal cell color sensation); thus, the embroidered linen art of the Huichol natives of western Mexico is not suprising, if not unusual. This book is a fascinating account of the mythology, peyote lore, way of life, and art and craft of these Indians. It focuses on the shaman-artist José Benítez Sánchez. Peter T. Furst, the anthropologist and author, provides over 50 colored photographs and full explanations. We learn much about the peyote cactus as sacred sacrament and source of visionary art. Examining the complex, dense, symbolic, and colorful art may suggest similar patterns seen on Tibetan thankas (particularly mandalas), Australian Aboriginal art, and also Fillmore and Avalon Ballroom posters of the LSD-influenced 1960s. The book may be short, merely 106 pages, but it is eye-opening and leaves the reader with much to ponder. ... Read more

Profusely illustrated with stunning photographs of over 500 profile and figural spoons along with historical images, this book is the first to examine the production of silver spoons by Navajo artisans beginning in the 1880s and continuing to World War II. Many of the rare spoons are engraved with dates and names. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for those who enjoy fine silverwork
Navajo Spoons: Indian Artistry And The Souvenir Trade, 1880s-1940s by Native American artifact and antiquities dealer Cindra Kline is an informative and attractive combination history and art that tells and showcases the story of some truly fine silverware created in an era when the railroad helped open up and streamline travel and trade with the American West. The cross-cultural elegance of Navajo silverware is amazingly displayed in the beautiful, full-color photographs of Navajo Spoons, while the "reader friendly" text offers deep insight into these artifacts and the people who created them. A superb artbook especially for those who enjoy fine silverwork, Navajo Spoons is a recommended addition to Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections, as well as an invaluable single volume introduction for collectors and dealers of Navajo silverwork. ... Product Description
Lila O'Neale's Yurok-Karok Basket Weavers, first published in 1932, remains one of the finest and most comprehensive books devoted to American Indian basketry. In contrast to the typical treatment of tribal arts in her day, which saw them as homogeneous, anonymous, and conservative, O'Neale regarded the weavers as individuals, with personal styles and outlooks and a capacity for innovation. A pioneer in the study of Native American art, she presented the art from the weaver's point of view. In addition to an introduction by O'Neale scholar Margot Schevill, this edition includes an appendix listing the identities and tribal affiliations of O'Neale's 43 consultants. ... Read more

Product Description
At the time of its publication in 1908, Pomo Indian Basketry was the most complete and detailed study of a single Native American basketry tradition. The work, prepared as Samuel Barrett's doctoral dissertation, earned the author the first Ph.D. in anthropology at UC Berkeley.Among its contents are sections devoted to materials, techniques, forms, and designs. This edition is supplemented with two early articles, "Basket Designs of the Pomo Indians" by Barrett (1905) and "California Basketry and the Pomo" by his teacher Alfred Kroeber (1909). Sherrie Smith-Ferri's introduction reviews Barrett's early life and research and identifies the human sources of Barrett's collections and information--a community of talented Pomoan basket weavers. ...
