4-0 out of 5 stars A great snapshot of a unique Native American experience
Garrod & Larimore's First Person, First Peoples is a fine collection of personal accounts of leaving home. The stories are at once unique and universal. They are expressive of an experience to which Native Americanscan truly relate, and yet, set on the campus of one of America's mostselective colleges, the stories are from a elite few who may be speaking ofan experience that is virtually impossible to share. This is valuable asan oral history, and perhaps more importantly, as a voice of the NativeAmerican which remains too infrequently captured.Still, we must findthose voices which are seldom heard, rather than continuing the habit ofletting the elite culture speak for us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar, a first class work on Native education
This was a truly wonderful and accessible book about Native American educational achievment. The story of Dartmouth College and its relationship to Native American education is captivating. The honesty of the students isat time heartbreaking and yet is continually inspiring. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, older catalogue, but no color photos. 3.4 stars
This is the catalog of an exhibition held at Claremont College in 1979-80. They have some nice stuff, and the photos are crisply reproduced, but in black and white only (which was typical for small-museum catalogs then). The college's holdings are strong in Western basketry, prehistoric and historic Southwestern pottery, and Plains textiles and bead/quillwork. There's a nice selection of historic photographs to supplement the artifact photos.

Looks like it was a nice exhibit, but the catalog will be of interest mainly to completists, unless you come across an inexpensive used copy (as I did). The pottery and baskets were the attractions for me.

Happy reading--

Book Description
In this collection, Champagne and Stauss demonstrate how the rise of Native studies in American and Canadian universities exists as an extraordinary achievement in higher education. In the face of historically assimilationist agendas and institutional racism, collaborative programs continue to grow and promote the values and goals of sovereign tribal communities. In twelve case studies, the authors provide rich contextual histories of Native programs, discussing successes and failures and battles over curriculum content, funding, student retention, and community collaborations. It will be a valuable resource for Native American leaders, and educators in Native American studies, race and ethnic studies, comparative education, anthropology, higher education administration and educational policy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Need an Updated Version of this Book
This book is very important for minority students.Unfortunately, it is now 2006 and this version was published in 1996.Minority students need to know about colleges and how they can be accepted on campus. They also need to know the groups on a college campus in which they can seek support and help when needed.I hope that a new version comes out at some point so minority students have somewhere to turn.
