Book Description
For the last 50 years, the power of integrated circuits has continued to grow. However, this performance will end up reaching its physical limit. What new ways will then be available to develop even more powerful and up-to-date systems? This book introduces the principles of quantic computing, the use of nano-tubes in molecular transistors and ADN computing. It suggests new fabrication methods for the 21st century and introduces new architecture models, ranging from the most conventional to the most radical. Using a chronological theme, it explains our unavoidable entry in the nano-device world: from the 1948 transistor to the microchip. It concludes by anticipating the changes in daily living: investments, impact on coding activities, nanocomputing systems implementation and IT job mutation. ... Read more

Book Description
One of the grand challenges in the nano-scopic computing era is guarantees of robustness. Robust computing system design is confronted with quantum physical, probabilistic, and even biological phenomena, and guaranteeing high reliability is much more difficult than ever before. Scaling devices down to the level of single electron operation will bring forth new challenges due to probabilistic effects and uncertainty in guaranteeing 'zero-one' based computing. Minuscule devices imply billions of devices on a single chip, which may help mitigate the challenge of uncertainty by replication and redundancy. However, such device densities will create a design and validation nightmare with the shear scale.
The questions that confront computer engineers regarding the current status of nanocomputing material and the reliability of systems built from such miniscule devices, are difficult to articulate and answer. We have found a lack of resources in the confines of a single volume that at least partially attempts to answer these questions.
We believe that this volume contains a large amount of research material as well as new ideas that will be very useful for some one starting research in the arena of nanocomputing, not at the device level, but the problems one would face at system level design and validation when nanoscopic physicality will be present at the device level. ... Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A086913. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research expanded Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) communications analysis in two areas. First, multimode communication was included to account for ground to ground and air to ground links in addition to the standard air to air links traditionally used in LPI analysis. The propagation equations for the three modes of interest were derived and included in LPI analytic models in the form of a mode quality factor to account for multimode LPI scenarios. This new quality factor was used in studying several communication and interception link combinations. Variations due to differences between the communication and interception modes were presented graphically. Second, atmospheric conditions were included to account for atmospheric attenuation. Previously, both links were assumed to be under the same atmospheric conditions. This assumption limits LPI analysis to scenarios where the receiver and interceptor are located close to each other. Therefore, the atmospheric quality factor had to be expanded to include scenarios where the communication link and the interception link are experiencing different and possibly fluctuating atmospheric conditions. The atmospheric propagation losses were accounted for by using the Liebe atmospheric propagation model to estimate atmospheric attenuation in dB/km for any practical atmospheric conditions. The atmospheric quality factor was then applied to the analysis of various scenarios for communication and interception links under similar and different atmospheric conditions. ... Read more

Book Description
Education has traditionally studied the world by bringing itinto the classroom. This can result in situated learning that appearsto students to have no relevance outside the classroom. Studentsacquire inert, decontextualized knowledge that they cannot apply toreal problems. The obvious solution to this shortcoming is to reversethe situation and bring the classroom to the phenomena: to learn in arich, real-world context. The problem with the real world is that itis complex and filled with interactions that are hard to sort out. Theeditors and authors believe that the right tools might help studentswith this sorting process and result in learning in rich contexts. This book is an account of a series of experiments designed to explorethe validity of this insight. ... Book Description
It was once widely believed that quantum computation would never become a reality. However, the discovery of quantum error correction and the proof of the accuracy threshold theorem nearly ten years ago gave rise to extensive development and research aimed at creating a working, scalable quantum computer. Over a decade has passed since this monumental accomplishment yet no book-length pedagogical presentation of this important theory exists.

Quantum Error Correction and Fault Tolerant Quantum Computing offers the first full-length exposition on the realization of a theory once thought impossible. It provides in-depth coverage on the most important class of codes discovered to datequantum stabilizer codes. It brings together the central themes of quantum error correction and fault-tolerant procedures to prove the accuracy threshold theorem for a particular noise error model. The author also includes a derivation of well-known bounds on the parameters of quantum error correcting code.

Packed with over 40 real-world problems, 35 field exercises, and 17 worked-out examples, this book is the essential resource for any researcher interested in entering the quantum field as well as for those who want to understand how the unexpected realization of quantum computing is possible. ... Book Description
One of the first books to thoroughly examine the subject, Quantum Computing Devices: Principles, Designs, and Analysis covers the essential components in the design of a "real" quantum computer. It explores contemporary and important aspects of quantum computation, particularly focusing on the role of quantum electronic devices as quantum gates.Largely self-contained and written in a tutorial style, this reference presents the analysis, design, and modeling of the major types of quantum computing devices: ion traps, cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), linear optics, quantum dots, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID), and neutral atom traps. It begins by explaining the fundamentals and algorithms of quantum computing, followed by the operations and formalisms of quantum systems. For each electronic device, the subsequent chapters discuss physical properties, the setup of qubits, control actions that produce the quantum gates that are universal for quantum computing, relevant measurements, and decoherence properties of the systems. The book also includes tables, diagrams, and figures that illustrate various data, uses, and designs of quantum computing. As nanoelectronics will inevitably replace microelectronics, the development of quantum information science and quantum computing technology is imperative to the future of information science and technology. Quantum Computing Devices: Principles, Designs, and Analysis helps fulfill this need by providing a comprehensive collection of the most promising devices for the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Today's State of the Art
Still in only the most advanced laboratories the future of computing seems to lie in new technologies that will replace the current type of semi-conductors. These technologies, lumped together under the term Quantum Devices. For the first time, the leading reserchers from around the world have gotten together to produce a book containing all of the promising areas that are being worked on, summarizing the work up to date, and giving some indication of the direction of future research.

Up until now the ever increasing speed of computers has been following Moore's law which states that the computing power of a CPU will double every 1.5 years at half the price. But in about nine more doublings there is a brick wall, the devices built into the chip will be one atom wide and you can't get any smaller than that with semi-conductors.

The basic concepts of quantum computing go back to the 80's. But the actual construction of devices that could perform the basic tasks such as quantum logic gates has proven more difficult, There are several schemes that have shown promise, but each has stumbled over roadblocks and difficulties. In turn each has provided spin offs into both computing and other areas as well.

Here in one book is the story of the state of the art. ... Read more

Product Description

In Periodic Nanostructures, the authors demonstrate that structural periodicity in various nanostructures has been proven experimentally. The text covers the coalescence reactions, studied by electronic microscopy, and shows that the nanoworld is continuous, giving rise to zero- (fullerenes), one- (tubules), two-(graphite) and three-(diamond, spongy carbon) dimensional carbon allotropes.

The authors explore foam-like carbon structures, which relate toschwarzites , and which represent infinite periodic minimal surfaces of negative curvature. They show that these structures contain polygons (with dimensions larger than hexagons w.r.t. to graphite) that induce this negative curvature. The units of these structures appear as nanotube junctions (produced via an electron beam) that have wide potential molecular electronics applications. Self-assembled supramolecular structures (of various tessellation) and diamond architectures are also proposed. The authors propose that the periodicity of close repeat units of such structures is most evident not only in these formations but also present in all of the carbon allotropes. It is also shown that depending on the lattice tessellation, heteroatom type, and/or doping, metal nanostructures (nanotubes in particular) can display both metallic and semiconductor characteristics. Therefore, their properties can be manipulated by chemical functionalization. The authors therefore suggest that nanostructures have heralded a new generation of nanoscale biological, chemical, and physical devices.

The text also provides literature and data on the field of nanostructure periodicity and the authorsown results on nanostructure building and energy calculations as well as topological characterization by means of counting polynomials of periodic nanostructures. The aromaticity of various coverings of graphitic structures is also discussed.

This book is aimed at scientists working in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, Ph.D. and MSc. degree students, and others interested in the amazing nanoarchitectures that could inspire the cities of the future.

Book Description

Ultra-low voltage large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs) in nano-scale technologies are needed to:

-Meet the needs of a rapidly growing mobile cell phone market
-Offset a significant increase in the power dissipation of high-end microprocessor units.

Low power large capacity memories are a necessary component of low voltage LSIs. Many challenges arise in the process of achieving such memories as their devices and voltages are scaled down below 100nm and sub-1-V. A high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio design is necessary to deal with small signal voltages from low-voltage memory cells in the presence of large noise sources in a high-density memory-cell array. Moreover, innovative circuits and devices are needed to resolve the increasing problems of leakage currents and variability in both speed and leakage. Since the solutions to these problems lie between different fields, (e.g., digital and analog, SRAM and DRAM) a multidisciplinary approach is needed.

Ultra-Low Voltage Nano-Scale Memories is an authoritative monograph that addresses these challenges. This book is written for memory and circuit designers as well as for researchers and students who are interested in ultra-low voltage nano-scale memory LSIs.
