Extractions: Namibia is a country of rugged scenery that at one time was home only to nomadic San Bushmen. Time and nature have created extreme and diverse landscapes of stark beauty in this part of southwest Africa. Inland from the desolate Atlantic coast are spectacles that include the incredible dunes of the Namib Desert, the vast salt pan and surrounding bush of the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park, and the great chasm of the Fish River Canyon. The Namib Desert The vast Namib Desert in western Namibia is regarded as one of the oldest and driest deserts in Earth. It includes a sand sea that is reputed to contain the worlds most picturesque dunes. The highest dunes are set around an ephemeral clay pan at Sossusvlei. Over time, the Namib dunes have been sculpted by the wind into bizarre and complex shapes. This apparently barren and arid landscape is home to a complex ecosystem supported by precious moisture gleaned from fogs that roll in from the Atlantic. Seen from the air, dunes near Sossusvlei tower over trees in the foreground. Behind, the sand sea of the Namib Desert stretches beyond the horizon.

Just as the culture of the Afrikaners differs significantly from that of the German-speaking community and as both of those cultures differ from that of the more varied technical-assistance community, so do African and Creole cultures differ. The Rehobothers closely resemble the rural Afrikaner culture of the mid-20th century, while the Nama have more in common with the other pastoral black communities, and the Cape Coloured have a distinct urban culture with both black and European elements. The northern black cultureswhile distinctive as to language and forms of music and danceformed out of a mixed farming context unlike that of the Damara and Herero. The San are a tragic case. Their culture was ruined by ranch serfdom and wartime exploitation as trackers, and efforts to rebuild from the fragments have been limited by lack of knowledge, resources, and space as well as by the paternalism of many of their self-appointed guardians. With the exception of the San, Namibian cultures appear to be alive and evolving, not least in the urban areas. However, rising unemployment may lead to the breakdown of neighbourhood and other social groupings and to the anomie and lawlessness that characterize the townships of many southern African cities, notably in both Zambia and South Africa. The black cultures are not well supported by formal institutions or the government, owing both to doubts as to what would enable rather than smother their development and to a lack of fiscal resources.

Between a landing by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 and the creation of German South-West Africa in 1884, most of the few Europeans who visited the territory were explorers, missionaries, and hunters. The next three decades of German rule were marked by bloody suppression of the rebellious black Africans, notably the once dominant Herero, whose revolt in 1904 was not finally crushed until four years later at the cost of perhaps 60,000 lives. Extractions: Namibia is rich in mineral deposits, copper, diamonds, lead, zinc, vanadium, and uranium which, together with cattle and karakul sheep farming accounts for about 90 percent of exports and 40 percent of gross domestic product. The fishing and tourist industries also contribute significantly to the nation's economy. Commercial production of food crops, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, maize, millet and sunflower seed remains limited. Germany held Namibia as a colony from 1885 to 1915. With the outbreak of World War I, South Africa joined the Allied Powers and declared war on Germany. A force of South African troops invaded South West Africa and forced the Germans to surrender on July 9, 1915. After the war ended, Namibia moved from German control to an administration by the South African government. In 1960, the South West Africa People's Organization, or SWAPO, was formed through the combination of two organizations which opposed South Africa's control of the country. Over the next several years SWAPO became the leading opposition political party within Namibia, while simultaneously establishing overseas representation and sending hundreds of its members abroad for military training. SWAPO initially held back from a military confrontation with South Africa, in the hope that independence could still be achieved peacefully.

In the mid-19th century, German missionaries opened up the interior, paving the way for traders who came later. The annexation of the country by Germany in 1884 accounts for the distinctive German architecture and traditions. After a turbulent past, the country at last became independent on 21 March 1990, and is now peacefully approaching the twenty-first century became independent in 1990, when South Africa's control was finally diminished by the United Nations and the guerrilla group known as SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization.) Germany controlled the area until World War I, when South Africa invaded the colony and imposed 75 years of rule. The German influence, their language, architecture, and sense of organization, is still evident, particularly in the country's superior infrastructure, and the restaurants in Windhoek. While the new nation still depends on South Africa for some foodstuff (and wines) the local ranching, fishing industries and mining are productive, along with growing tourism. The desert terrain is good for Precambrian fossils, and scientists from Yale and the American Museum of Natural History explore the limestone deposits of Namibia on an annual basis.

Southern Africa Namibia An enchanted land of shifting desert sand, rolling dunes, bushveld, and mountain peaks, Namibia stretches across the southern Atlantic seaboard. Home to one of Africa's most diverse populations, Namibia has a cultural history that is as impressive as its natural wonders. After being punted from one colonial power to the next, in 1989 it became the last African country to gain independence. Today, Namibia's first president is still in office, and this nation of hard-working, friendly people is shaping its future. Outdoor adventures, from the harmless to the hair-raising, abound here, and the landscapes have something for everyone. You can simply enjoy the enigmatic features of the Etosha Pan, Hoba Meteorite, or the bizarre Giant's Playground, or you can get physical and hike the Fish River Hiking Trail, one of the most challenging trails in Africa. Etosha National Park offers game watching opportunities that rival those of Kruger or the Serengeti. Namibia's impressive big game includes huge elephants (some of the world's largest), lions, giraffes, rhinos, and hartebeests. Namibia's biggest draw, however, is its haunting landscapes: the desiccated lakes of Etosha National Park, the eerie dunes of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert, the deep crevices of the Sesriem and Fish River Canyons, and the great interior sand dunes will amaze travelers with their beautiful solitude.

Ethnic groups When the colonial powers carved up Africa, the divisions between the countries bore virtually no resemblance to the traditional areas of the various ethnic groups, many of which therefore ended up split between two or more countries. As you will see, there are cultural differences between the groups in different parts of Namibia, but they are only a little more pronounced than those between the states of the USA, or the regions of the (relatively tiny) UK. In Namibia, which is typical of any large African country, historians identify over ten ethnic groups. The main ones are detailed below, arranged alphabetically.
