Product Description
Missouri boasts more than six thousand caves in an unbelievable variety of sizes, lengths, and shapes. This grand tour sheds light on the historical significance of caves, corrects misinformation about them, and describes how people have used and abused them. Weaver tells how caves have enriched our knowledge of extinct animals and early Native Americans. Caves were used for burial sites and moonshine stills, as hideouts for Civil War soldiers and outlaws, and even as venues for underground dance parties in the late nineteenth century. Weaver also relates the history of Missouri's show caves and the resulting expansion in tourism. The book covers all counties with recorded caves and includes photos from the author's collection. ... I have not finished the book yet, but I have found it to be very informative about the history surrounding Missouri caves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate this fascinating tour
Former show cave operator H. Dwight Weaver presents Missouri Caves in History and Legend, the concentrated essence of a lifetime of history and research into Missouri's caves created by limestone bedrock slowly dissolved by groundwater. Bringing the reader on a tour underground, Missouri Caves in History and Legend reveals what caves have to tell us about extinct species and early Native Americans; how caves were used to mine saltpeter, onyx, and guano; how caves became hideouts for Civil War soldiers and notorious outlaws such as Jesse James; and much more. A handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate this fascinating tour accessible to readers of all backgrounds - the next best thing to visiting Missouri's caves in person!

Product Description
Do not make the mistake of thinking that you have no Missouri ancestry and that this book therefore has no use for you. In the nineteenth century it was difficult to get from the east side of the United States to the west without going through Missouri. Your direct ancestor may have made a brief appearance in Missouri of which you are unaware. These abstracts are not complete for the county covered, nor does this work cover all the counties in Missouri. The abstracts were selected for their genealogical significance and include: land partitions, deeds of gift, powers of attorney, out-of-state deeds, granting of slaves, slave manumissions, and wills and marriages. The counties covered are: Barry, Bates, Benton, Boone, Callaway, Cedar, Cole, Cooper, Dade, Franklin, Gasconade, Greene, Henry [Rives], Hickory, Howard, Johnson, Laclede, Lafayette, Marion, Miller, Morgan, Pike, Polk, Ralls, St. Clair, St. Francois, Saline, Warren, and Washington. These abstracts are to serve as a guide to researchers to enable them to find deeds they may not have located otherwise. ... Read more

This long-awaited book is the last volume to be published in the five-volume History of Missouri series. Focusing on social, economic, and political life, Volume IV of A History of Missouri provides an in-depth analysis of both rural Missouri and urban development during a time of rapid growth and change in the state.

"This volume of A History of Missouri is a solid piece of scholarship. The coverage is sensible. Indeed, the book is what it purports to be, a thorough-going history of the Show-me State, and it exhibits a good feeling for the state and its people."--Journal of Southern History ... Read more

Product Description

"[Kirkendall] addresses other issues that generally receive inadequate attention in volumes of this type. His treatment of the role of women during the crucial years of his study is admirable. Likewise, his analysis of black life in Missouri during those years is important. Not only does he document and describe the oppression faced by blacks, he also writes at length about their creative response. Kirkendall is at his best when writing about the jazz culture that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s in Kansas City. . . . This book is a valuable addition to the literature on Missouri history."--Journal of Southern History

"Kirkendall has provided a solidly researched and thoroughly written history of Missouri from 1919 to 1953. It will provide an excellent reference for the study of the economic and political affairs that affected Missouri during more than three decades of rapid change. Kirkendall's study should be a part of every library with a collection on the history of the trans-Mississippi West."--Indiana Magazine of History ... Read more

Product Description

Mark Twain's boyhood home of Hannibal, Missouri, often brings to mind romanticized images of Twain's fictional characters Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer exploring caves and fishing from the banks of the Mississippi River. In City of Dust, Gregg Andrews tells another story of the Hannibal area, the very real story of the exploitation and eventual destruction of Ilasco, Missouri, an industrial town created to serve the purposes of the Atlas Portland Cement Company.
In this new edition, Andrews provides an introduction detailing the impact of this book since its initial publication in 1996. He writes of a new twist in the Ilasco saga, one that concerns the Continental Cement Company’s attempt, not unlike Atlas’s one hundred years earlier, to manipulate the sale of a piece of land near its plant in the town. He explores the uneasy relationship between preservationists and the plant’s CEO and officials in St. Louis; the growing movement to preserve Ilasco’s heritage, including the building of a monument to commemorate the early residents of the town; and the grassroots petition drive and letter-writing campaign that stopped the Continental Cement Company’s machinations.

Each state has its own representative symbols--ranging from seals, flags, and buildings to rocks, minerals, plants, and animals--but how did they come to be chosen? In Catfish, Fiddles, Mules, and More, John C. Fisher provides an answer to that question for Missourians with a handy reference on the various official symbols of the state. Fisher explores each of the symbols adopted by the legislature as well as the state nickname and the legislative process in Missouri. Product Description

The epic tale of Missouri's history from ancient times to today is related here in a concise, accessible format--from the Native American cultures to the territorial period; from the agony of the Civil War to the freewheeling era of jazz and Prohibition; and from 20-century labor and Civil Rights struggles to the triumph of the St. Louis Arch.Descriptions of many of these tumultuous times come from Missourians themselves, the reporters, generals, and everyday people who set down their observations of this great state and the events that made it what it is today.

With more than 80 illustrations, photographs, and maps, Missouri: An Illustrated History, examines Missouri's changing economy, geography, industries, and immigrant populations, bringing the past and present vividly to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lively read by a knowledgeable author
Missouri's central geographic location makes it a place where climate, and flora and fauna of the north, south, east, and west overlap. Cultures too come together here in an often overlapped and conflicted way. Not easy to write about. Sean McLachlan's "Missouri: An Illustrated History" is a highly readable account of the complicated human history that has played out here from Paleo Indian times to the present. It's a brisk read that does justice to a state that has a distinct literary and political identity. Non-native readers will get a feel for the authentic place. Natives will find this a fresh account of Missouri's rich past.

The village of Freistatt, Missouri was founded in 1874, and nearly fifty years later Irwin and Margaret Groh represented four families when they married there. Product Description

To begin the preface to the second edition of Lion of the Valley,James Neal Primm quotes the Reverend W. C. Bitting: "A city is morethan an assemblage of buildings with streets between them. It has asoul, and an atmosphere, and a social significance to which all materialthings should be made to minister." If a history book can help definethat atmosphere and significance, Lion of the Valley has done so for St. Louis, telling the story of a vibrant and unusual American city in an engaging yet scholarly manner.

Primm establishes a general historicalnarrative of St. Louis from Pierre Laclede's first step from the bow of abateau to the prototypes of MetroLink. As in most comprehensiveaccounts, Lion of the Valley focuses on the central institutionsand personalities that have shaped the city, as well as the events andcircumstances that brought fame, or fear, to the citizens of St. Louis. The Great Fire of 1849; the 1904 World's Fair; the machinations of the"Big Cinch"; the construction of the Gateway Arch; these and many otherepisodes from the city's colorful past come to life in the pages ofPrimm's book.

This newly designed fourth edition offers anew preface from the author and a revised and expanded index in orderto make the book more reader friendly, while maintaining the integrityof the original text. It will be indispensable to students of St. Louishistory as well as amateurs interested in the development of this greatcity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History Lesson
If you enjoy reading history then you'll enjoy this book.Especially, of course, if your from St. Louis or have a particular interest in the city itself and its surrounding area.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly dense.
Though obviously well written and deeply researched, Lion of the Valley is so incredibly dense it's a challenge to read. Every page is so packed with tiny factoids about people, associations, political developments, bond issues, etc., that only a few topics rise above the clutter to stick with the reader. (I found myself frequently going back a page or two to reestablish the identity of a person, place or thing.) But then again, in covering 200+ years of history, how does one limit the subject matter?

Having read other city-specific histories (namely, Chicago and NYC), I view Lion as more of a textbook than an engaging narrative. Informative, enlightening, yes. But not an easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This is simply one of the best books I have read on the history of a city. Not a simple tour of neighborhoods, architecture or ethnic groups that settled in various enclaves of the city, but rather a comprehensive andintelligent look at a city from its earliest days, placed against thebackdrop of its development in the region and history.the only comparablebook on a city that i have read which is better from an economic andregional development standpoint is nature's metropolis about chicago.onewonders why we do not have more gems like these about all american cities. perhaps we would take better care of our hometowns if we knew more abouttheir past from a thoughtful perspective.anyway, lion of the valley issuperb.

This compilation contains the records of 16,000 marriages from fifty-one Missouricounties formed before 1840. It is now the chief means of identifying settlers who were inMissouri prior to the first and second censuses of 1830 and 1840. All Missouri counties withmarriage records before 1840 are included except St. Louis County and City, which have beenadequately covered elsewhere.

Most of the marriage records came from the original marriage books on file in the variouscounty courthouses, and these are identified in the "List of Sources" at the beginning of the book.Other records came from previously published compilations, some from both. The marriageslisted are arranged alphabetically by grooms' surnames, and each includes the name of the bride, the marriage date, and the name of the county in which the full record is located. Over the past century, three nationally significant histories have vied for space and place in Independence, Missouri. Independence was declared Zion by Joseph Smith, served as a gathering and provisioning point for trails west, and was called home by President Truman for sixty-four years. Taylor has integrated research from newspapers, public documents, oral histories, and private papers to detail how the community has preserved these various legacies. He places the role of preservation in Independence not only within the larger context of preservation in the United States but also within the context of American environmental history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
My first association with Jon E. Taylor was at a book signing we were both attending at Borders in Lee's Summit Mo. about a year ago.I am typically not too interested with history, and especially history books. But after visiting with him, I became curious about his writing.

Much to my surprise, I found his book very hard to put down. It's well written and easy to follow.I must admit that I was born in Independence, so that made it even more appealing. The book covers the RLDS Church (Community of Christ), with headquarters in Independence, MO.; President Truman, who resided in Independence; and the Three Trails: Santa Fe, Oregon, and California, in such a manner that it is all brought to life in a very exciting way. I was made aware of the rich history that was made in Independence, that for years and years seemed not to be cherished and capitalized on. It was truly eye-opening.

The writing is interesting and not boring in any way.The book is expensive, but in my opinion it is well worth reading. ... Read more
