5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoying Math
One of the goals of teaching math is for students to apply and synthesis what they are shown. These problem solving and critical thinking games are so much fun for the students that they want to create their own version of some of these games. A great resource for every classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than seventy 'kid friendly' math games
Featuring more than seventy 'kid friendly' math games, puzzles, and projects from all over the world, "Math Games & Activities From Around The World" by Claudia Zaslavsky is 160 pages of fun, math skill developing exercises that will have enormous appeal for children ages 9 and older. Children will engage in the use of geometry to design game boards, probability to analyze games of chance, logical thinking to devise gaming strategies, and more. From Tic-tac-toe (first played in ancient Egypt), to Nine Men's Morris (once played in England with living pieces), and Mankala - the oldest and most popular game in the world. From building a model pyramid to working maze-like African network puzzles, "Math Games & Activities From Around The World" is a unique and welcome supplemental addition to school math and logic skill development curriculums. Also very highly recommended for classroom and homeschool curriculums is Claudia Zaslavsky's companion book, "More Math Games & Activities From Around The World" featuring seventy more games, puzzlers and projects ranging from Mongolian 'Jirig', to Sudan's 'Little Goat Game', to the game of 'Achi' from Ghana.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little math treasure to keep...
This is a very detailed book for ages 9 and up.It consists of games that correlate with some of today's districts standards. We have Native American patterning, Symmetry from Japan, Geometry from Kenya, Probability games from Mexico and Hawaii, and board games anywhere from China, Korea, and New Zealand.

This is a recomended book for those teacher or parents that want to make math a little more exicitng for children.Mathematics is not only about learning it from a textbook, but also from hands on experiences through games and visual aids. This books touched upon the idea that it's okay to make math fun for you and a child.

One or two games in this collection dates back about 3,300 years ago in Egyptian times.Symmetry is learned from making masks and faces from the U.S. and Native Americans.Islamic "POLYGONS" are also found in this book. You can learn to make "Hopi Flat Baskets" that dates back about 1,500 years ago when baskets were found in the ruins of Anasazi homes. These baskets show children about symmetry and design.Repeated patterns from Alaska show children that we don't only have patterns in designs but, we also have patterns in every day items all around us.

This is an excellent book that lets children view math from the fun and creative perspective.Teachers can have fun while teaching district standards and make sure that our youth isn't bored with the "textbook" syndrome as Harry Wong puts it.We need to show children that mathematics deals with every day life and that it doesn't only appear on the pages of a text every five days.Mathematics is the necessary means for survival in our complex and equative society. This books let's us step outside of the "textbook syndrome" and let children explore the "real-world" experiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good fine fun
9-12 years old is just right for this book. Some of the puzzles seem overly simple, but for the most part they were just challenging enough.Throughout the book there are puzzles that have a surprising twist or are satisfyingly tricky, making this book worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, thought-provokimg

A great summertime activity when it's too hot to go outside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a precocious 7 year old
Great for my seven-year old grandson who loves puzzles, jokes and riddles. While much in this book is above him at the moment, he will grow into it. And what he can do now, is challenging and completely engaging. He especially liked a puzzle that asked him to find the differences between two drawings. Unlike the usual challenge in this type of exercise, the two drawings were mirror images where he had to distinguish between things on the left reflected as things on the right. He loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anno's Math Games II
This is a beautifully designed book, very inviting to the eye.The book translates mathematical concepts into pictures and little stories which are, not incidentally, visually fascinating. The concrete and specific examples illustrated give children a pathway to the abstractions behind them, teaching them to think and use their native curiosity to develop knowledge. But didactic function of the book, as well thought out as it is, is almost secondary to the pleasure of taking in the beautiful designs and drawings.I think this is a book that a child will remember into adulthood. ... Product Description

There's number fun waiting everywhere--it just takes a math detective, armed with these really cool, colorfully illustrated activities, to find it. Budding mathematicians can start the search by going on a cereal count and estimating how many pieces are in the bowl; staying on the lookout for shapes; or even becoming a "human clock." Measure your family and find out who has the smallest head or the biggest fist. Find lucky pennies with your birth year on them, play calculator or dice games, and keep a tally of all the things that happen in your house. Surprise your friends by proving that it is possible to walk right through a piece of paper. Ratios and measurements, probability, units of time and distance, powers of two, and simple geometry have never been so entertaining.

2-0 out of 5 stars errata
The author is clearly struggling with the material
leading to significant mistakes throughout (e.g.
whole numbers are confused with rationals, the four
color "solution" is muddled, history is garbled--
not to mention B.C.E. and A.D. being juxtaposed on
the time line). It's a shame because a diligent
editor could have caught these in time for revision.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it's a great book that can help a lot with math.
I like that it tells the history of math and numbers. It tells a lot of cool math tricks that can really help people. It tells a lot about Pi like how to remember the first 8 decimal places. It also tells quick facts about math, like the boy in Japan who took Pi to 40,000 decimal places.Ittook him 15 hours.I really like the book, and I suggest that other kidsread it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas and well organized
I bought this book for fun ideas to hone my two kids' math skills. This book is wonderfully organized by math topic, and then gives you separate exercises within those topics for different grade levels (K-2 and 3-5).It's very easy to locate exactly what you're looking for without being overwhelmed.I've used it all summer and will continue to use it through the school year because the content is so relevant. This is by far the best book I've read on doing math at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Son Loves This Book!
My son loves this book. We first checked it out of the library but after 3 times checking it out and he still wanted it, I bought it. He never seems to tire of it and it is a lot of practice in counting backwards or subtraction. You have gotta love that!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for younger kids
This book would be OK for kids who are just learning about subtraction (say, in kindergarten or early in first grade). The math is too easy (take away 1 or 2 cookies on each page and count how many are left) for anyone older than that. Sure, it's kind of fun the first time to see how the words that Riding Hood and the different characters say change when you offer them one versus two cookies, but for kids who are used to playing educational computer games that offer many more choices, it quickly becomes boring. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good intentions, poorly done
About me:I helped edit Arthur Engel's Exploring Mathematics With Your Computer and other math books.

I looked forward to seeing a book presenting to the very young simple math ideas which are outside the school curriculum.I leave it to librarians and teachers to say how children react to this book; what I wish to point out are two instances where the mathematical knowledge conveyed by the author, not to mention of the editors and translators, is below par.

On p. 16-17 we see perspective views of two walls of a house which have on them pictures whose true shapes are squares. One needs no expertise to see that something about these views is wrong. The laws of perspective enable one to say what it is.If you hold a camera straight and take a picture of a vertical square on a wall, the images of the horizontal sides can not be longer than the longer vertical side image. In the book they are much longer!

A written discussion of pespective is in fact too difficult for early elementary grades. The proper way to discuss images with young children is by producing images of objects with a camera obscura, a box with a pinhole or lens in the middle of one side and frosted glass on the other. The LCD screen of a digital camera could also be used, except that it is too small and delicate.

------------

A later section of the book is devoted to the following kind of puzzle. Can we walk in one stretch along every block of every street of a village exactly once?Leonhard Euler pointed out, first, that this is impossible if there are more than 2 junctions where an odd number of streets come together, and second, that it is otherwise possible.

The first statement can be derived in a way which even a third grader can understand. Every time we pass through a junction, two more of the blocks which meet at the junction become traversed. Thus, at a junction other than where we start or end our walk, we can finish off all the blocks only if the number meeting at the junction is even.

The author devotes a number of pages to this puzzle but misses the opportunity to present Euler's simple but ingenious argument. Worse than that, he misquotes Euler by saying the walk is impossible if there are more than 3 odd junctions. This is true but does not imply that the walk is impossible on Euler's original example, the figure on the left of p. 66, which has 3 odd junctions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whodunit Math Puzzles
This is an excellent, non-threatening way to introduce math in the real world to children.Cal's adventures are short, and require problem solving skills that everyone needs to practice. This book is not just for the mathematically inclined. It is for children of all ages looking for a riddle to solve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent math puzzles for the middle school child
My son likes math puzzles, so when he saw that this book was available, he purchased it through the scholastic books program at his school. He enjoyed it and so did I. It consists of 22 problems presented in the form of math puzzles. Each puzzle is roughly four pages in length and solutions to all are in the back of the book. The writing is well done and the problems posed are at the middle school level.
Most of the problems involve crimes and what is nice about the stories is that the problems blend so well with the situations. One of the main and valid criticisms of textbook problems is that they are so artificial. There is none of that here. The problems are fresh, interesting and present mathematics in a realistic light. If your children have an interest in math, then you should buy them this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Useful Book
This is a wonderful and useful introduction to math and mathematical reasoning for pre-schoolers. Most importantly, my three-year-old son had fun with it, and found the colorful pictures throughout the book very engaging. Counting, matching, writing numbers one through ten, learning the use of "long" and "short", simple calculations, and other concepts are covered. At the top of each page is a small tag for parents telling them what the page is trying to teach. This is also a great book for helping children learn to follow instructions.
