4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Delivery
I received my textbook in the estimated time frame, and it was in pristine condition. Very happy with the provider and I would purchase from them again in the future when I need more textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible content, poor binder quality
I have not had a chance to really delve into the content. But paging through the book, I am very excited to go deeper. The book seems to touch on almost all mfg processes, even addressing material behavior, metallurgy, tribology, and some other wide ranging subjects that affect manufacturing.

That being said, I bought this book "new" from Amazon and it has several gouges on the front and back cover. Also the back cover hinge looks like someone took a knife to it so that there's only the inside glued paper that's holding the hard cardboard onto the book. Never seen anything like this from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book and great educator
i was privileged enough to have dr. kalpakjian as a teacher in college before he retired. we used his 3rd edition as our textbook. now as i start my career in engineering, i am finding that i need to refer to the book! i borrowed the book in college for his class and am now buying a copy for our office.a great reference.very well thought out book with excellent diagrams.worth every penny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oversimplified
The emphasis of this book seems to be more on the basic mechanics of the different processes it describes. That's fine, and important to understand manufacturing, but...

BUT, he gives very little attention to how the material being processed responds to the processing.Without a better understanding of the microstructural effects -- and ensuing DEfects -- it may be too hard to troubleshoot the processes described in this book.

My professor was flipping through the early chapters of this book (where the materials issues are presented) and declared them "cheesy."

So, to sum up:this good book becomes great by combining it with other books/courses/professors/etc that will interject materials issues into this books discussion of the mechanical issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great engineering book
This book is one of the best in manufacturing engineering, even if there are a few mistakes in some mathematical deductions. I think it is a very didactic and easy to learn book, it shows almost every manufacturing process used by modern industry. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Avoid if possible
Every other engineering and science book I have seen has used "rho" as the standard variable for density. This author uses "D".ALL the formula are like that.He just uses his own variable regardless of what the standard is.This is not only extremely annoying, this is also unacceptably for a scientist or engineer. This index makes the book extremely confusing to read and coupled with a poor index, it's practically useless as a reference.

The book rambles on in a poorly organized fashion with little regard for modern manufacturing practices. For example: He dedicates half a chapter to the economics of shaper machines.Haven't heard of them you say? That's because they stopped using those things in the 1920's in favor of the much faster and more precise milling centers!Or spending 2 chapters talking about how to calculate exactly how long a cutting bit will last when in reality a machinist will only use it until the wear starts to affect production time and them replace it.

The first couple chapters provide an interesting and fairly simple look at basic metallurgy. However the book does not talk about machining plastics, polymers or composites.

Illustration are few, which is sad because thy would really help what he is trying to explain.A lot of the ones that are there look like bad Xerox copies of catalogue pages.Others look like close upsfrom a cad program, complete with the blocky lettering. Then there ones thatlook like they were hand drawn.

Finally, the text in this book looks like it was written on a typewriter, combined with the very limited use of subscripts or superscripts in his seemingly arbitrary variables and equations, the book feels like one of my grandfathers books from the 40's.For a book that was only published in 1999, this is almost painful to look at. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Technical Analysis of Gallium-Based Electronics
By way of introduction to my review, Pearton et al. comment: "Group III-V nitrides offer a valuable combination of electrical, optical, and piezoelectric behavior, and enable the fabrication of LEDs, LDs, detectors, and transistors." (p. 13). GaN technology has a bright future, and enjoys a variety of applications (p. 213), including military ones (p. 166).

This modest-sized volume not only discusses gallium-based devices, but also ones that include germanium, indium, and other elements. The rare earth elements also come into play. For instance, there is mention of Gd-Ga-garnet (p. 318), various gadolinium oxides, etc.

This book requires a strong background in the subject at hand to appreciate fully. It is loaded with graphs and equations.

5-0 out of 5 stars `The only book to deal with Molecules and Devices!'
According to the author, `Intelligent Macromolecules' are large molecules with capability to change their conformational structures and/or properties in response to an external stimulus. In this book, devices constructed from Intelligent Macromolecules are referred to as `Smart Devices'. Recently, many scientists and engineers investigate these devices, for example, Carbon Nanotube transistors, polymer LEDs, and DNA sensors.
Since the size of devises becomes as small as molecule, fundamentals of material science are required as well as engineering of device constructions. There is a gap between science and engineering to develop these devices. The purpose of `Intelligent Macromolecules for Smart Devices' by Liming Dai is to fill the gap by providing up to date summary of the field.
The text is divided into three major parts. The first part deals with fundamentals of macromolecules. The structures and Syntheses of Conducting Polymers, Stimuli-Responsible Polymers, Dendrimer and Fullerenes, and Carbon Nanotubes are described. The second part, which characterizes this book most, deals with Intelligent Macromolecules to Smart Devices. In this part, Oriented and Patterned Macromolecules and Nanostructure are revealed, which is necessary to construct Devices from Molecules. In the final part, a large number of Smart Devices, such as Electronic and Photonic device, Sensor and Sensor Arrays, Actuators and Nanomechanical devices are described.
I am strongly recommend this book all, in particular scientists and researchers interested in device application of polymers and device engineers interested in molecular structure and synthesis. I also recommend to students that begin to study in this field.
