Hurley, Jr. Mr. Hurley’s Our Maryland Heritage series continues with this book, which investigates the Hilton families, primarily of Montgomery County, but also includes family members found in other Maryland counties and elsewhere. This study began with the goal of providing information about the Hilton families generally found in Montgomery County and expanded to include information from a number of other sources. The data contained in this report has been prepared from information found in a variety of sources, including records found at the library of the Montgomery County Historical Society, such as personal family files, obituaries, church and cemetery records, published collections of data, and published genealogies of related families.

I would guess that this book never saw an editor. If I had owned this book, my editor's red pen would have been marking it up.

The book is full of innuendo and opinion, too much information and trivia, and was poorly organized. A chore to read.

Very good book for detailed overview
A very good book for what it is written for.A great Detailed overview of the Eastern Shore.Not too much detail to bore you and a broad enough scope in time and events to allow you to put the book down after reading it and be able to intelligently talk about the SHore.

Yes, a journey...
I bought this book so I could get some fun facts and interesting comments to stimulate conversation at our family get together over the holidays. We hosted an Eastern Shore themed party and I displayed blurbs from the book and the old folks from the native Eastern Shore were able to relate and talk about their memories. If you are a Native Eastern Shoreman/woman, you will enjoy this book.

A Place Lost in Time
As someone born on the Eastern Shore, I can say that this book was a joy to read.It gave me some perspective on the history of the Eastern Shore, although I think sometimes got bogged down in esoteric details of little interest to most readers.The real benefit of this book was the outsider's view of the culture.The author does a fine job of characterizing the people of the Eastern Shore, and for that alone this book is worth reading for the interested insider or outsider. ... This collection of naturalization records originally developed from a search forgenealogical information concerning German settlers in Western Maryland. Although the firsttwo parts of the work contain references to denizations granted by the Council andnaturalizations granted by enactment of private laws, most of which have been extracted fromvarious volumes of the Archives of Maryland, chief interest in the work rests with thenaturalizations in Part III, which have not previously been published. Originally designed toencourage German Protestant emigration to colonial Maryland, a pair of 18th-century Englishstatutes were enacted as a means of effecting bona fide naturalization in the Colony. Thenaturalizations in Part III, compiled from Maryland's Provincial Court documents in the Hall ofRecords, Annapolis, were granted in accordance with these statutes. Heretofore, there has beenno convenient means of ascertaining the names of all naturalized citizens in colonial Maryland.

Between 1742 and 1775 upwards of 1,000 naturalizations were granted in Maryland, 1775 beingthe logical terminal date since naturalizations were originally recorded in compliance withBritish statutes and were therefore only co-extensive with British dominion. Data in thenaturalization records presented here includes the identifying number of the record, date ofnaturalization, date of communion, volume and page of the Provincial Court Judgments, name,county or town of residence, nationality, church membership, location of church, and witnessesto communion. Place names, clergy, and parish locations are identified in the appendix. The Montgomery County Sentinel was first published as a weekly newspaper in 1855 by Matthew Fields and has been continuously published, with brief interruptions until the present. The early focus of the paper was on advertising and politics, with relatively little space devoted to local news. News articles were usually brief and to the point without elaboration. On two occasions, once before and once during the Civil War, the paper suffered brief interruptions while Matthew Fields, a Southern sympathizer, was held by Union military forces. Following the war,publication was continued by Mr. Fields or his family until it was sold in 1932. This compilation of selected Montgomery County Sentinel extracts is taken from available microfilm records. Marriages, deaths, lists of undelivered letters, civil appointments, voters, jurors, road notices, significant events-these records are a goldmine of names and dates, with the added benefit of an index to names, places, and subjects. Unfortunately, many weekly issues are missing and some existing copies are illegible due to damage. Two-thirds of the issues for the years 1860 through 1865 are missing, and there are no issues for the years 1867, 1869, and 1870, with only one issue in the year 1868 and three in 1871.
