5-0 out of 5 stars Great Martial Arts Game Book!
The game was pretty good and we enjoyed it... but the BEST part by far about this book was the information inside! Most games just kind of lay out a system and a few characters. But this one really goes into great depth about the medieval orient and the history of the martial arts. The martial arts info alone makes this a great buy! I HIGHLY recommend it to martial artists and game enthusiasts alike! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste
I would have given this "book" zero stars if I could. It is 25 flimsy pages and really a pamphlet or brochure. It has nothing to offer. I am not sure whose endurance would "double or triple" from this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for endurance athletes...

3-0 out of 5 stars DO OR DIE IS OK
NOTE: I rate this book 2.5 stars.

This brief book is not of the same depth as other "classic" titles of combatives of the era, like "Kill or Get Killed", "Cold Steel" and "Get Tough". Although it is not as good as the before mentioned, it is however somewhat important because it is a historical record of a valuable source of original written instruction by a combatant prodigy that was influential in effecting the way hand-to-hand was taught in the U.S. military of the time. Essentially Biddle's methods became the foundation the military built their close combat programs on.

Like Styers book "Cold Steel" this title also covers bayonet fighting, knife fighting/defense (which is based on the gentlemanly art of fencing which is just absurd, as well the knife section focuses on knife-on-knife fighting which is also impractical and unrealistic), and unarmed combat. Like already said it does not cover these topics in great detail. This book is OK for the untrained or inexperienced, but is mostly recommended for its historical value.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
Biddle is considered something of a joke, nowadays. The knife fighting techniques are adapted directly from fencing with almost no modification to allow for the much shorter blade. However, if you find a 1st edition in good condition, it is worth a lot on the collector's market.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the forefathers of hand to hand combat
Dont get this book if you want to learn fighting techniques get it to own a piece of history and to learn about one of the men who advanced our fighting forces skills. If you own Kill or be Killed ,Get Tough and Cold Steel this would be a good addition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic text
I was fortunate enough to find a 1st edition of the 1937 Do or Die. A 1944 edition also exists with more information added. Topic covered are Bayonet fencing, knife fighting, jiu-jitsu and savate as well as boxing. The photos are interesting as the soldiers depicted are in WW I uniforms with the famous doughboy helmets. This book is really a great find for any student of knife fighting and combatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars James Bishop
After catching the author on the Patrick Phillips talk show speaking about Bruce Lee, I went out and bought the book.I was very impressed with the impact that Bruce Lee has had on the everyday people Bishop has writtenabout.I had no idea that Bruce Lee has made such a profound contributionto culture and civilization and the book has made me look at Bruce Lee inan entirely different light.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I don't normally do these kind of reviews, but I was moved to add my opinion when I saw the review posted by Oliver Sodemann of Germany.Did we read the same book?I thought this was a fantastic book, one of the best I have seen on Bruce Lee in the 30 years I have been collecting.Sodemann's comments sound more like a personal grudge against the author rather than a serious, constructive criticism of the book's faults or merits. While I admit the film credits section could have been more thorough, it was just a couple of pages at the end of what was otherwise a very well-written and inspirational book.Never before have I seen someone get so upset about something in the appendix of a book.I think it is ironic that the other review dated the same day praises the book for not leaning too much toward useless trivia and focusing on the important aspects of Lee's legacy. I'd put this book up there among the best of the bunch on Bruce Lee.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
This book is a really great examination of what it is about Bruce Lee that so inspires millions of people.Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.Too many books on Bruce Lee tend to be heavy on useless facts andlight on substance."Remembering Bruce" doesn't get bogged downby a lot of silly trivia and minutia, but instead focuses on the positiveimpact his philosophy and legacy have had on people.

2-0 out of 5 stars REMEMBERING exact credits
Although most of the book will be rather great for all Bruce Lee fans the credit section is not at all well-researched.After all those years here are no exact credits given for Bruce's movies (although they have been published so often)! CHINESE CONNECTION is here given to be originally entitled FISTS OF FURY (instead of FIST OF FURY)! This printing error(?)(the ending S in FISTS) is very crucial since long for not confusing it with the American release title for BIG BOSS!Furthermore GOODBYE, BRUCE LEE - HIS LAST GAME OF DEATH is not an alternative title for GAME OF DEATH. It is a totally different low budgeted rip-off with Bruce Li (aka Ho Tsung-Tao).There also is no further information on GAME OF DEATH II which is quite well known as a movie by director Ng See-yuen and it's alternative title THE NEW GAME OF DEATH is again a totally different rip-off.Especially Bruce Lee newcomers could be mislead here to look out for the messenger in ENTER THE DRAGON? Never heard (or seen) of that! And something rather the way ENTER THE DRAGON's fight scenes were shot for the reason of not showing continous takes without a cut. I can't see that there is such a photographing style in early seventies kung fu or swordplay movies which audiences are used to. Panoramic shots were only short intercuts in most of the movies and the only kung fu movie director I know avoiding close-ups is Shaw-Brothers' Chu Yuan in the late seventies! And Ying-Chieh is Han Ying-Chieh and not Ying-Chieh Han!Surnames in Chinese may come first and that's all about it. No reason to adapt them to American Inosanto turned down all the offers by movie producers to take a part in a movie (p. 73). He appeared in COUNTER ATTACK (aka CHINESE STUNTMAN) in around 1980 which was starred and directed by Bruce Lee imitator Ho Tsung-Tao (Nevertheless it is one of the better movies!)So I can't recommend this book for the rather superficial way the credits have been researched here.Greetings, Oliver Sodemann

4-0 out of 5 stars A great, concise image of the man!
This book really boils it down to the nuts and bolts of what made Bruce Lee such an amazing man.It looks at each aspect of his personality and shows the reader what made him so unique. Also, the book talks about therecent events in the Bruce Lee world, such as the organizations that havebeen formed to preserve his memory. It also lets the reader know where hecan find the best info on Bruce Lee. ... Product Description
After World War II, training in hand-to-hand combat stopped abruptly, as interest in the Eastern martial arts blossomed. Convinced that these close-quarter techniques, which had been forged in the streets of Shanghai, China, and tempered in the Pacific and European theaters of war, represented the true essence of close combat, and concerned that these skills would be lost forever, a handful of men decided to preserve this knowledge. One of these men was Bob Kasper.

A student of the late Charles Nelson, Bob Kasper wrote these two volumes of individual close-combat techniques for his students but never published them. The first volume is on principles and tactics while the second volume concentrates on stance and movement. By offering these two volumes to the public for the very first time, Paladin is not only helping to preserve the techniques designed and battle-field tested by World War II combatives pioneers - a task that Kasper dedicated much of his life to - it is also preserving the work of another close-combat legend, Bob Kasper. This book contains an exclusive new foreword by Kelly McCann, who trained in combatives and knife fighting with Kasper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic basic guide to Kasper's close quarter combat system.
The author was a student of the famous Charles Nelson, but he trained in various martial art and combative systems. He had also been a Marine and was trained in close quarter techniques. The late Bob Kasper's approach is simple but highly effective. This volume has two parts, volume 1 covers the important principles and tactics of his system. This includes principles of close combat, the importance of having an aggressive attitude in self-defense, modes of attack, Principles of power, circle of defense and primary targets. the second part deals with stance and movement.Though the book is only 65 pages; nevertheless, it contains an enormous amount of valuable material for anyone interested in real life street combat techniques. Rating: 5 stars.Joseph J. Truncale (Pro-Systems Combatives).

5-0 out of 5 stars Historically Significant
Bob Kasper was a tireless, self-critical leader in "real training in combatives" long before this method of personal protection and safety became so mainstream and popular.I believe that Bob Kasper, along with his early years (1979-82) training partner: Carl Cestari (also deceased) remain unequaled in their comprehension of, and in their abilities to instruct what is necessary to survive and prevail in a violent encounter.

Mr. Kasper was one of a handful of individuals who truly grasped and taught the realities of close quarters, hand-to-hand combat--even though he would never admit to such a claim.

This 65 page manual is but a small and significant explication of the fundamentally direct and simple combative methods of personal protection Bob Kasper understood and taught.

The manual consists of two parts: Volume One pertains to Principles and Tactics, which addresses concepts of aggressiveness, simplicity, control, offense, power and effectiveness.

Volume Two of this booklet covers Stance and Movement, and all that these two elements entail.

This manual is as much a book of historical significance, as it is a manual addressing a practical approach to combatives. It is, therefore, worth its weight as a strong reference point in the over all field of combatives in the United States.

I was very fortunate in that I was able to correspond with Mr. Kasper via snail mail during a time prior to e-mail, and speak with him over the telephone prior to the creation of cell-phones. He was one of the most humble, gracious and generous men I have had the opportunity with which to communicate. But then, that seems to be the rule rather than the exception of men who are genuine warriors.

According to Kelly McCann's foreword to this book, Bob Kasper, a year or so prior to his death in October 2006, had written, re-written and finally organized his vast knowledge of combatives into what McCann alludes as becoming this 65 page manual.

My only regret is that Mr. Kasper is not alive in order to discuss this manual and grow even further from our own critical reviews of the text.As fine and concise as this manual is, I could imagine that Bob Kasper would already be working hard on improving it...

5-0 out of 5 stars Potent
This book is part one of Bob Kasper's legacy.Bob and the others in his small community sought to insure a part of our American heritage did not disappear, our combatives.Bob was an avid martial artist and led a rich life.He discovered the school Charles Nelson founded and in it found his home.
This book will introduce the reader to the style of close combat developed for our fighting forces in WWII.Unlike other martial arts, it was meant to be easy to learn, easier to apply and effective. It was close combat distilled to its essentials.I had the privilege to train with Bob on both knife and empty hand techniques. This book is a good representation of the techniques and principles codified by Bob and the group he and others founded.
This book is required reading for anyone serious in their study of combatives or other fighting arts.

Product Description
In this companion volume to his critically acclaimed first book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali, Davis Miller turns his attention to a second iconic figure of the twentieth century--and another of Miller's own seminal influences: film star and martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

Just weeks after completing Enter the Dragon, his first vehicle for a worldwide audience, Bruce Lee--the self-proclaimed world's fittest man--died mysteriously at the age of thirty-two. The film has since grossed over $500 million, making it one of the most profitable in the history of cinema, and Lee has acquired almost mythic status.

Lee was a flawed, complex, yet singular talent. He revolutionized the martial arts and forever changed action moviemaking. But what has his legacy truly meant to the fans he left behind? To author Davis Miller, Lee was a profound mentor and a transformative inspiration. As a troubled young man in rural North Carolina, Miller was on a road to nowhere when he first saw Enter the Dragon, an encounter that would lead him on a physical, emotional, and spiritual journey and would change his life.

As in The Tao of Muhammad Ali, Miller brilliantly combines biography--the fullest, most unflinching and revelatory to date--with his own coming-of-age story. The result is a unique and compelling book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My book was judged a top-ten sports book by BOOKLIST Magazine
I apologize for being this directly self-promotional.I recently learned that TAO OF BRUCE LEE was judged one of the ten best sports books the year that it was published. The following is the mini-review that was published in BOOKLIST at that time.

All best, Davis Miller

"Miller, Davis. The Tao of Bruce Lee: A Martial Arts Memoir

Miller combines a biography of Bruce Lee with his own coming-of-age story as a "karate kid" in the early 1970s. Whether describing how a viewing of Lee's Enter the Dragon changed his life or dispelling many of the myths behind the Lee legend, Miller manages to turn the story of two lives into a fascinating study of the nature of the hero in popular culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce And The Truth
The subtitle, A Martial Arts Memoir, describes what this book is really about. It's not a biography about Bruce Lee - though various "facts" and "myths" about him are detailed or debunked. Rather, it's a tale of how Bruce Lee's movies, athleticism, martial arts prowess, focus and determination, philosophy, and larger-than-life persona awoke the dormant soul of a ninety pound weakling. The Tao of Bruce Lee details Davis Miller's transformation from sad, loner, directionless, teenage failure into an accomplished martial artist, writer and, most importantly, vibrant, purposeful human being. The misery of Miller's life before seeing Bruce Lee explode on the screen in Enter the Dragon is, in places, gut-wrenching. But the sadness and despair are replaced by optimism and an the urge to yell, "`atta-boy!" as the young Miller slowly wriggles out of his cocoon. Miller's is a story of possibilities; if he can discover himself, find meaning and contentment in life, anyone can. Beside the quasi-spiritual autobiographical stuff, Miller touches on Bruce Lee's martial arts skills and reputation, his meteoric rise to superstardom, particularly in Asia, the facts surrounding his death and his enduring worldwide impact. There is a lot about Muhammad Ali and comparisons and contrasts between these two very talented men (and what they gave to the world.) Miller brings up Ali so much, one may wonder why he didn't simply write one book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. This book is better on reflection than when actually reading it. I like it more now - and would rate it higher - than I did when I turned the last page this morning. It has a good aftertaste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Davis Miller
When I first read the Tao of Bruce Lee, I was expecting another biography of Lee (and being a die-hard fan of Lee, that would have been perfectly fine), but this book turned out to be a lot more than that.

The first half of the book deals with the life of Davis Miller himself - growing up as a scrawny, ninety pound kid in North Carolina - and the profound impact Lee had on his life. Inspired by Lee, Miller finds the motivation to try and better his meaningless life by practicing hard to become the greatest Martial Artist alive (or as he puts it: "lightning on limbs"). I am sure the discipline and dedication he learnt while practicing Martial Arts helped him later in his life as a writer.

The second half of the book focuses more on Lee, and tries to remove the "thick mist of money making" that has obscured the true story of Bruce Lee by presenting a very honest and well researched account of Lee's life. Overall, an extremely well written and readable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading
"I desperately need something to read", I suddenly recalled when I was heading for my favourite coffeshop. So, I popped in and started to look for something, and this book sort of beamed at me. I got it under the impression that it was a biography about Bruce Lee, but it turns out that it is more a book about Davis Miller's relation to Bruce Lee and how Lee has influenced him. It is very easy reading and a quite nice book, and at page 97 and onwards a small biography about Bruce Lee (or Li Jun Fan, which was his real name) appears. Apparently it is hard to find any books with true facts, Davis Miller claims that this one shall be rather close to truth, and you will learn that Bruce Lee wasn't the lonely martial arts master that one thinks. If you like martial arts in general, and more specifically Bruce Lee, get this book, you will finish it within a couple of days and it is fun reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but really good applications
I've studied Wing Chun for years, and do agree that this CD strays in some places from the traditional approach. However, I also caution that many Wing Chun practitioners are so tradition / lineage oriented that they miss some really great approaches to the style out of shear ignorance. They think if it is different than they do it, it must be wrong. Well, not necessarily so. As far as this CD goes, it may not be the best instructional tool for a beginner, but I think it should accompany anyone's collection simply because the applications presented for the moves of the Sil Lum Tao form are VERY ADVANCED! You don't often see such advanced applications even in advanced Wing Chun classes, because most people don't know a lot of the ones shown here. Anyway, enough said. I'd buy it if you study or want to study wing Chun.

1-0 out of 5 stars UNBELIEVABLE
What can I say...the title says it all!!! I can not believe how horrible this CD is. It is a good idea that goes terribly wrong. The person on this CD appears to have absolutely no concept of wing chun kung fu. Save your money!!!! The only thing I regret is that I can't give it a LOWER rating.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst
Please...Please...Please...Don't waste your money. This CD-Rom has nothing to do with wing chun. Terrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
I was appalled at the poor quality and poor instruction on this cd! All it shows is a few different techniques from several angles. Unfortunately the technique execution is horrible and completely goes against most principles of wing chun. The presenter obviously has some backround in shoalin kung fu, but next to none in wing chun. If you want some good instruction, I suggest any video from Emin Boztepe and the American Wing Tsun Organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Impressive
I found both the interface and the content VERY informative and helpful. I have studied Wing Chun under a Master, and found the form work on the CD to be excellent, as well as the applications of the techniques. If you are currently studying, this CD can only be of help. If you have studied in the past, it will serve as an excellent reminder of techniques you might be rusty on, as well as showing a few moves you might not be familiar with. If you are looking for a way to learn about Wing Chun for the first time, this CD will be an excellent introduction and exploration of a wonderful system of martial arts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
After paying $50 for this cd-rom and thoroughly absorbing its contents I felt cheated in many ways. The first thing that bothers me is that no person takes credit for authoring it. And, insane and irrelevant as it sounds, the unknown creator claims that the U.S. civil war didn't really happen, it was just a scene from "gone with the wind", and that Americans have been brainwashed. Hmmm... seems like someone's blown a gasket... anyway... the essence of the cd-rom is basically a multi-angle video clip of an unknown unnamed person poorly performing his bastardized version of "crushing step." It is about 45 seconds in length (I didn't time it, maybe it's 20 seconds or possibly a minute), and that is just about all you get. No audio, nothing. The written explanations, stories, etc. are so pathetic and unprofessional, I just couldn't believe it. Very skimpy. I was expecting detailed explanations, decent graphics, in-depth theory... sadly, it failed to deliver. Anyway, I could go into the many details concerning why this product is a total joke but, if you want to buy it go ahead, just remember this: you WILL be disappointed. Let my mistake help you to not make the same mistake. I wish someone had been kind enough to write an intelligent review of this cd-rom before I bought it, then I would never have wasted my money and time. I really feel like a sucker. Consider this review a public service to the serious martial artist.

They are not kidding when they say you need a sifu and this is only a suplemental tool. For $50 I expected a ton more than what was offered. You are better off putting your money into extra class time with a certified instructor.I would not recomend this item unless your sifu has specificly told you to get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Praying Mantis CD review
I found the CD an excellent overview of the northern praying mantis style. There is a wide range of technique, and the applications span the gamut of readily apparent to surprising.

I must disagree with Mr.Ortiz' evaluation of the CD, as I have seen his work as well and can compare the two.The fact that he may not be familiar with some of the applications in the CD does not make them incorrect, merely unknown to him.

While not having a sifu at your arm is a disadvantage, the methodical teaching style in the CD and the multiple angle format make it as close to the real thing as can be obtained.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grain of salt
Please take the one-star review below with a grain of salt. This is the publisher of the Shaolin series here, taking the opportunity to point out that the author of that review is the producer of competing mantis videos.

We apologize for having to respond in this review, but we think it only fair. We agree with the other reviewers that this is quite an excellent learning tool.

Thanks everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mantis CD: Seamless blend of form and function.
The Northern Praying Mantis edition of the "Shaolin Interactive Instructional Series" is an excellent learning tool that should be considered by anyone with a desire to learn the basics of the style. Obviously the CD ROM cannot replace the hawklike eyes of an expertinstructor standing attentively by your side. However, the program provesto be the perfect blend of an ancient art and the brilliant technologicalingenuity of modern times. In other words, the interactive nature of theprogram (including but not limited to, multi angle viewing of techniques,an excellent slow motion feature and in depth investigation of "realworld" applications of the basic techniques) brings this program tothe cutting edge of martial arts instruction.Without access toprofessional instruction, this CD ROM is as close as one can get to themulti faceted, in depth knowlege of a seasoned (in the flesh) teacher. The CD ROM is way ahead of the archaic learning curve of otherinstructional media (with a nervous shudder, I hark back to the days ofrewinding martial arts instructional videos much more than I could unwindthrough the enjoyment of an ancient discipline.)This program's intrinsicadaptability will provide much more quality instuction in that it can beeasily tailored to the specific needs of the student. One needs only toclick on the link to view a technique from multi angle, multi speedobservation points second only to actually being there. In other words, buy it. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1952 the 24-year-old Yves Klein left Paris for Japan, to pursue his first love; not art but judo. Klein spent a year and a half in Tokyo, studying mainly at the Kodokan under the ninth-dan judo master Oda. After becoming one of the first Europeans to receive a coveted fourth-dan black belt, Klein returned to France and opened the Judo Academie de Paris. In 1954 the prestigious publisher Grasset published his book Les Fondements du Judo, illustrated with hundreds of photographs of Klein and leading Japanese teachers demonstrating the six major "Katas" (the movements that form the basis of judo). The Foundations of Judo is the first ever English translation of this historical document. Translated and typeset in a facsimile of the 1954 original by British artist Ian Whittlesea, it expresses the fundaments of the art that was Klein's foremost passion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally in English!
I've wanted Klein's judo book for years, but the French original is a collector's item and very expensive -- Klein is a very important modern artist, and his art is in the world's best museums.I haven't received my copy yet, but am delighted that it was translated by a judoka who is also an artist, and that its design replicates the original.Buy it now before the 1500 copies disappear! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!
This is the second in the series which chronicals Bruce Lee's lifeduring the making of "Way of the Dragon"... Loaded w/ great photos and stories.. Extremely well done.. as was Volume 1 and I can't wait for Vol 3 to come out!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book in my opinion
The pictures are nearly all blurry and of low quality. Looks like most of them came from old magazines. Not worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rare stories and rare photos
Excellent two-part books on a behind-the-scene of Mr. Bruce Lee's directrial debut "The Way of the Dragon (aka Return of the Dragon)".An arthur claims that he is an avid Bruce Lee fan, and he surely proves it on this book. Part 1 covers from the development of the film and the location shooting in Italy.(I haven't read Part 2.)The book is filled with never-before-seen rare pictures of Mr. Lee during the production of the film.Great reading as well. One thing I am not happy about the book is 'printing'.Especially photographs.Majority of them are not treated with justice. The book contains some well-known photos of Mr. Lee, and even those familiar ones are badly printed. It's something to do with a quality of work done by its bookmaker, I imagine.Hopefully a revised version will be published via another bookmaker in the future because this book is too important for all Bruce Lee fans. ...
