Editorial Review Product Description Intarsia—a mosaic of wood fitted and glued into a wooden support and popular in 15th-century Italy for decoration—is the focus of this guide. Scroll sawyers of all skill levels learn the secrets of creating these fascinating wooden inlay projects by using a scroll saw and other common woodworking tools. Fourteen portraits of North American wildlife, including an eagle, a mustang, an owl, and a fox, are provided. Chapters address the necessary steps to get started, including wood choice, pattern use, backing, and sanding, while also covering more complex issues such as adding texture to finished pieces to simulate fur. Editorial Review Product Description Inlay is a wonderful way to create flowers, scenes, figures, and other intricate and colorful designs on wood objects--and a great opportunity to work with small quantities of rare and costly woods (also precious metals, leather, mother-of-pearl, and other materials). Today, since veneers and marquetry have come to substitute for inlay, this book helps to carry on the tradition of an almost forgotten art, and shows modern craftspeople how to use it to make plain objects special. Through detailed instructions, diagrams, and photographs, every step in the inlay process unfolds, including a special section on finishing. The spectacular projects feature everything from a pretty floral tray to Christmas ornaments, from a bookstand to a set of nested bowls--even jewelry! Customer Reviews (5)

Editorial Review Product Description With dozens of creative and easy-to-use patterns, this very last book by the incomparable Patrick Spielman--who died shortly after finishing it--is sure to inspire woodworkers. Intarsia, in which small pieces of wood are joined to create a design and sometimes painted, is already one of the most popular woodworking crafts. And these unique items, which use a combination of readily available softwoods and plywoods, are fast, fun, inexpensive, and far more colorful than intarsia that relies on natural woods. Every woodworker, no matter the level, will find something that's appealing among the diverse choices, which range from wall hangings to tabletops, and include animal gargoyles, a moonscape, wildflowers, a personalized football plaque, and a Cape Cod lighthouse. |

Nonetheless, this book is, to my knowledge, the only dedicated overview of how to make your own banding. Moreover, it does this well. Total beginners may find the lack of information in some areas to be confusing, but my guess would be that anyone ready to make their own banding probably has enough woodworking experience to puzzle it all out. Creating Beautiful Boxes with Inlay Techniques -- by Doug Stowe is a beautiful book that covers some of the same ground, but the emphasis on Stowe's book is more on the box than the banding. Sometimes you can't buy the best book on a subject. You have to settle for buying the only book on the subject. I'm giving it an extra star just for existing.
However - and this is a bighowever! - Mr. Loeffler does not expand into how one would (or could)exactly go about glueing the bandings, such as the types of glues to beconsidered, dry times, hold and set times, etc.He does not cover exactlyhow one would go about cutting the inlay banding from a core panel into theappropriate thicknesses using, for instance, a band saw, the tool herecommends - there is absolutely NO helpful or insightful informaiton onsetting up your bandsaw, or other tool, properly cutting the panels to eventhicknesses, or what blades and guide settings for your bandsaw.Lastly,no exact process is given as to how one would go about sanding the inalybandings to even thicknesses and/or to an acceptable surface finish. As awoodworker, one must rely on your knowledge and experince with the bandsaw, power sander, and other shop tools in order to succesfully make inlaysusing this book. Thus, although I highly recommend this book in order tounderstand how intricate inlay bandings can be designed and constructed inyour own shop, I would highly recommend a good book on bandsaws (oraccurately cutting veneers on bandsaws), and sanding techniques.Beautifulinlay banding designs can definitely be had using the concepts shared inMr. Loeffler's book, but his book in no way guarantees that you will besuccessful at creating the finished product.
Subsequent impression(s): A well thought out and informativemethod book. Although the book is in black and white only, the diagramsand inlay patterns can be clearly followed and understood. It takes youfrom the basics of wood selection, terminology and inlay design andbuilding through to the tools needed. This is a very basic book that everynovice could use in a concise and understandable way to get started ininlay design. Absolutely no prior knowledge is needed or assumed. This isonly to start, but the author make it look so simple that maybe no otherbook would be needed. ... Read more |
