wildlife intarsia book
This is an excellent book for intarsia patterns. I have made many projects using this books patterns. A must have for anyone with a scroll saw.

An excellent introduction to Intarsia
This is an excellent book on intarsia. The introduction is basic and clear, going over wood choices, various tools, pattern preparation and various techniques to shape and sculpt the wood. It also goes over gluing and finishing. One valuable technique they explain is the use of sanding shims which allows multiple pieces of wood to be sanded into one smooth cohesive shape.

There are fourteen animal portraits in the book. They are, bald eagle, mustang, moose, burro, polar bear, red fox, arctic wolf, bobcat, buffalo, white tailed deer, jack rabbit, big horn ram, raccoon, and wolf.

The bald eagle pattern is followed by a step by step photo demonstration on how to make it. The mustang and moose also have demonstrations following them. From there the level of instruction fades quickly to footnotes, but by then everything is explained.

The patterns are extraordinary. I am familiar with the look of various animals and choosy about animal art, but aside from several very minor lines I would tweak (because I am nit-picky) I am satisfied. Each is true to the actual animal and nicely designed.

The book has two minor drawbacks, both related to the patterns. There are no patterns for the sanding shims for each design. Though there are small photos of the shapes of the sanding shims, so a little calculation should be enough to replicate them.

The second drawback is that most of the patterns seem to be on the simpler side of intermediate, or just intermediate. There are no simple beginner patterns, and there are none that would challenge experts. But with the clear instructions, a reasonably determined novice with some experience on a scroll saw (like me, my first pattern from this book nearly finished) should be successful. And experts will probably appreciate the skillfully designed patterns. So I couldn't let this detract from the rating.

Another book is Kathy Wise's Intarsia Woodworking Projects: 21 Original Designs with Full-Size Plans and Expert Instruction for All Skill Levels (A Scroll Saw, Woodworking & Crafts Book) which also has good writing and has good patterns for all skill levels. This is preferable for raw beginners or an advanced scroller looking for a fearsome challenge.

But if you like wild animal portraits and want to make them in Intarsia, this is your book.

Not a Good Wood Inlay Technique
This book has some nice patterns and pictures and for that, I give it 2 stars.But for technique on even the basics of how to inlay, I would have given it a 0.

I have found a lot of needed skills for learning to inlay wood. This book is easy to read, and understand. Good book for someone wanting to learn this art.

The Art of Wood Inlay
A good, common sense way to learn how to use different types of woods and other materials for inlay projects. Inlay is a true art form different from intarsia and marquetry and should be approached as such. I thought the author explained the different techniques such as matching wood grain by dying and scorching very well and gives the reader enough confidence to experiment.

A truly great introductory inlay book!
This is a "how to" book on inlay probably best suited to those learning the art.The first 20 pages cover what you need to know to get started.He starts with a discussion of the workspace, safety, woods to use for inlay material, wood grain and how to use it for effect, tools both power and hand, tool sharpening, and patterns--including how to make full sized patterns from those provided in the book.He then goes into the steps required for basic inlay, techniques for making constructs such as a leaf, how to prepare inlay pieces, and finishes with how to repair inlay.

The author then takes you step by step through 24 projects.Each project starts with a materials list, the inlay pattern, instructions on how to make the base item (the finished product less inlay) and finally extensive, detailed instructions on making the inlay.The inlay directions cover grain orientation and the order for performing the inlay.

As an inlay wannabe, I found the book very interesting and quite useful.It has inspired me to try inlay on my next small box project.I give it a 5-star rating! ... Read more

The best book available on the subject?
This book is a thoroughly amateurish effort. The layout is bad, the typography is ridiculously bad, and the illustrations are not clear or particularly helpful. Much of the book is extraneous to the subject, a folksy writing blend of which I am not particularly fond. The author does seem sincere in trying to be helpful.

Nonetheless, this book is, to my knowledge, the only dedicated overview of how to make your own banding. Moreover, it does this well. Total beginners may find the lack of information in some areas to be confusing, but my guess would be that anyone ready to make their own banding probably has enough woodworking experience to puzzle it all out.

Creating Beautiful Boxes with Inlay Techniques -- by Doug Stowe is a beautiful book that covers some of the same ground, but the emphasis on Stowe's book is more on the box than the banding.

Sometimes you can't buy the best book on a subject. You have to settle for buying the only book on the subject. I'm giving it an extra star just for existing.

Excellent concepts for homemade Inlays; NOT for a Novice.
Mr. Loeffler initially expands on the terminology and concepts of wood and the woodworker's craft.It is very brief and introductory.The meat of the text is in Chpt 3 and 4, and sections of the remaining chapters.Chpts3 & 4 provide the basic concepts to designing an infinite variety ofinlay bandings such as multi-stage inlays, ribbon designs, one unqiue inlayhe calls the "Duck" design.He covers the way the inlay core isassembled and built, the binding veneers used to bind the cores together,as well as how to manipulate the cores, binding veneers in multiple stagesand sawing/cutting techniques to prouce the more elaborate and beautifulmulti-stage designs.In addition, certain tidbits of valuable informationis sprinkled throughout the text on issues one must be aware of whendesigning and constructing an inlay banding.

However - and this is a bighowever! - Mr. Loeffler does not expand into how one would (or could)exactly go about glueing the bandings, such as the types of glues to beconsidered, dry times, hold and set times, etc.He does not cover exactlyhow one would go about cutting the inlay banding from a core panel into theappropriate thicknesses using, for instance, a band saw, the tool herecommends - there is absolutely NO helpful or insightful informaiton onsetting up your bandsaw, or other tool, properly cutting the panels to eventhicknesses, or what blades and guide settings for your bandsaw.Lastly,no exact process is given as to how one would go about sanding the inalybandings to even thicknesses and/or to an acceptable surface finish.As awoodworker, one must rely on your knowledge and experince with the bandsaw,power sander, and other shop tools in order to succesfully make inlaysusing this book.

Thus, although I highly recommend this book in order tounderstand how intricate inlay bandings can be designed and constructed inyour own shop, I would highly recommend a good book on bandsaws (oraccurately cutting veneers on bandsaws), and sanding techniques.Beautifulinlay banding designs can definitely be had using the concepts shared inMr. Loeffler's book, but his book in no way guarantees that you will besuccessful at creating the finished product.

First impression: A cheap, homemade set of thoughts. (presentation/cover could be better) color pictures of the designs would have been better.

Subsequent impression(s): A well thought out and informativemethod book.

Although the book is in black and white only, the diagramsand inlay patterns can be clearly followed and understood. It takes youfrom the basics of wood selection, terminology and inlay design andbuilding through to the tools needed. This is a very basic book that everynovice could use in a concise and understandable way to get started ininlay design. Absolutely no prior knowledge is needed or assumed. Bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. He has gotten a lot of useful tips from the book and some really nice patterns. Nice book for people interested in Intarsia.

Good start for the Newbie
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be.The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required.The patterns included in the book willget you started in fine fashion.

Good, but misleading cover
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.

Wish I would have read this sooner
I'm fairly new to veneering.The pictures are interesting and clearly illustrate what is being talked about.This covers about ever aspect of veneering.The book's tone is informative and interesting.And I finally got a good idea of what hammer veneering is.I didn't realize that PVA glues could be hammered/heated like hide glue.Also, spritzing water on veneer is something I ever thought of to prevent curling, but its so obvious to me now that I've read the book.Pictures showing types of veneer available is a feast for the eyes.

A Different Art Form
This book reveals, in exquisite detail, what must be a relatively new art form.The work is not for beginners. By following Mr. Rannefeld's directions it is possible to produce almost an infinite number of really beautiful patterns in wood to use in tables, platters and most especially, segmented wood vessels.

Precision is required to produce the designs and more than basic tools.Tuning your table saw before you start is very necessary, as is having really precise measuring tools.I started several designs only to find out that I needed to do something differently.It's a real learning process and it increases your general woodworking skills.Remember, your motto should be, measure four times, cut once.

The book is a must have for anyone who is interested in wood work as art.It's out of print now, but Lark Books should consider reprinting.

Spectacular results for ordinary woodworkers
All you need is to be careful and persistent and the results will knock the socks off friends, family and customers. It is absolutely THE most spectacular results in woodworking I've ever seen - with no natural artistic talent is needed to achieve it. Read, follow the book, you will get what it promises. The instructions are so clear and detailed, it is as if the author is right by your side, helping you see the finished piece even when the beginning stages look like an explosion of cutoffs.

Laminated Designs
Great book showing how to create laminated designs.A must have for segmented turning.

Groundbreaking; extraordinary.
This book should have been entitled, "Advanced Laminated Designs in Wood."This is no easy book, but that is not the fault of the author- the subject matter itself is difficult.However, the author spared no effort to convey this method of woodworking, and if the reader is willing to take the time needed to grasp it, he/she will reap considerable rewards.I love the book, and I highly recommend it.

All the methodology is clearly layed out, with numerous pictures and illustrations of how to create these designs.The designs themselves are beautiful and so variable, you could make them for years without ever repeating the same pattern.

I should note that this method results in considerable amounts of wood turned into dust and scrap.You will also have to construct an elaborate (though very useful) cutting sled for your table saw.And at times the book reads like a college text, although the author is a very capable writer.

That being said, I still highly recommend the book to serious artists and woodworkers who use inlay, intarsia, marquetry, or do segmented turning.

Deep, but Thorough
This book is so complete with jigs that are necessary to do the exact cutting required for good results that some woodworkers may not appreciate it.It has all the formulae to calculate the amount of lumber required for a project.If the woodworker has the patience to read this book and follow the design instruction, then experiment with different widths and numbers of the laminates, the possibilities are unending.Clarence Rannefeld, the author, has tried to introduce us to a whole new field in woodworking.Use your scientific calculator for the formulae, then cut and glue, and cut and glue some more and beauty will jump out at you.Above all, be patient.This type of woodworking is an art.Intarsia enthusiasts will love it. ... Techniques from one of the best
Doug Stowe makes some very eye catching woodworking projects. In this book he shows how it's done. Good descriptions and good recommendations on tools and supplies. Emphasis on using what you have, not going out and spending a bunch of money to start. If you have basic woodworking knowledge, this book will have you making detailed inlay boxes and other fine wood projects in no time.

Too much boxes and not enough inlays
As a person who is involved in Marquetry I had hoped to find some new information on inlaying but that was not to be. The boxes described will take a long time to make for most folks.

A box book first, inlay book second
Doug Stowe definitely knows his boxes. He's built thousands over the years. Anytime an expert like this decides to share his secrets, one should take the opportunity to acquire the knowledge.
The focus on "inlay" is a fuzzy one at best. Stowe talks in detail about how to make inlay strips or panels and for that information alone, this book is worth its price. A true artist should know how every little bit of his/her works are put together. Since inlay can be a beautiful enhancer to wood projects, designing and assembling your own inlay can only increase your artisanship.
Once the basics of inlay work has been covered, the book goes into some excellent box designs that I look forward to trying. However, and here is where one star goes away, many of these boxes don't require inlay for them to be successful. As a woodworker I both like and dislike this. I like the freedom to use the designs without being bound to the concept of inlay. I dislike that the title of the book specifically ties it to using inlay when many of the projects don't need to utilize it.
Picky? Maybe. Either way this is a good book and many useful designs and techniques can be drawn from it.

I really like this book and am having a great time with the patterns. I still haven't gotten to work on them yet, but I am planning my project carefully at the moment. The pictures are awesome and I am really looking forward to the finished project.
